Birmingham Hippodrome’s Development Team – Judith Greenburgh, Rosie Milsom and Eve Smith

Dear Supporters Welcome to Supporter Spotlight bringing you, your family and your business the latest updates from Birmingham Hippodrome and Hippodrome Plus - our programme of education, access and community work which takes place beyond the main stage. As an independent, not-for-profit charity receiving no revenue subsidy, Birmingham Hippodrome relies on wide-ranging support to achieve its ambitious aims for Hippodrome Plus. We hope we can count on your continuing support and encourage others to do the same so that these important projects, benefitting thousands of young people, across the city, can thrive and grow. Our warm thanks go to brand new Hippodrome Plus partner, Baker Goodchild, for the printing of this and future issues of Supporter Spotlight. Bravo! See you at a show or a Hippodrome Plus event very soon.

FROM BACKSTAGE TO FRONT OF HOUSE: THEATRE MEANS BUSINESS Our record-breaking 2013-14 year became all the more special when Chief Executive, Stuart Griffiths was crowned The BusinessDesk.com Ambassador of the Year at the West Midlands Business Masters Awards. Presenting the award, TheBusinessDesk.com Editor Andy Coyne said: “Stuart is a very worthy recipient of this award… his theatre has announced a record-breaking 12 months, which saw the venue sell more than 625,000 tickets in the 2013-14 financial year, a rise of 23%.” Much of this success was due to the trio of multi award-winning shows presented by the Hippodrome in 2013: Sir Cameron Mackintosh’s The Phantom of the Opera, Disney’s The Lion King and the National Theatre’s War Horse - all huge box office hits. In recognition of an extraordinary business year a commemorative Hippodrome Performance review is being published.

A ‘WICKED’ MAKE-OVER

NETWORKING WITH A FIZZY TWIST Leading Ladies line-up at Champagne Taittinger Tasting & Tutorial

Leading Ladies first non show-related event, a champagne Tasting & Tutorial with Taittinger’s Kevin McKee went with a fizzy pop! A full room of cross-sector guests participated in a Nez du Vin quiz, were guided on the most important wine tasting principles and put through their tasting paces during the pouring of brut, vintage and nocturne labels. The prize draw proved as popular as ever with new Leading Ladies member, HSBC’s Victoria Emery generously sponsoring the Taittinger prize. The evening raised over £600 for Hippodrome Plus.

NEW SPONSOR GETS INTO THE SWING (AND SINGS IN THE RAIN)

Guests from more than 30 cross-sector companies made for an extra ‘wicked’ atmosphere at the summer show event. Pre-show Leading Ladies enjoyed a stunning make-up for business demonstration from national award winning make-up artist Gemma Richmond. With personal brand and reputation increasingly a buzz word in corporate circles, Gemma created a business look for ‘ordinary’ model Donna Haggerty, a Purser with British Airways. The performance of international hit show Wicked received a standing ovation as did the sumptuous cake supplied by Caffe Chino to accompany the champagne. A selection of innovative and unusual prizes helped to raise nearly £1000 for Hippodrome Plus. We look forward to seeing the results of airbrush make-over winner Helen Curry of Leonard Curtis!

Team FleetMilne step centre stage to sponsor Leading Ladies

Swingin’ branded brollies Nicola Fleet-Milne and the well-known Colmore Row FleetMilne team hopped on stage during Singin’ in the Rain to announce the agency’s new sponsorship of the equally popular business network. They avoided splashes from the technical rain check and enjoyed a sneak-peek backstage of the wet set!

NAME A SEAT For over a decade, the Hippodrome’s Name A Seat programme has been a popular way for theatre lovers to dedicate messages to friends, colleagues and loved ones. The following three stories illustrate the different ways seats have been dedicated in recent months.

Sara and Brenda: A shared love of musical theatre

We Clean: A Polished Performance

A couple of years ago we decided to do a backstage tour. It was really interesting but we hadn't realised that the theatre is a charity and is run with the help of donations. This was what prompted us to buy a joint plaque for one of the seats. Now, when I book seats for a show, I always try and get the seat with our plaque and if we can't get that seat, then we like to go and say “hello” to it during the interval!

We Clean, cleaning custodians of the Hippodrome briefly put down their brooms and buckets to celebrate twenty years of service and retirement of team head, Janet Lynch. As a surprise tribute to Janet, We Clean Directors, Paul Concannon and David Harker have named a seat in the auditorium which is kept in pristine condition daily by a twenty strong team. Brenda and Sara visit their seat in the Circle

Carol & Roger: Celebrating a milestone birthday Carol: I was looking for something a bit different for Roger’s special birthday this year and I stumbled upon the opportunity to Name a Seat whilst looking on the Hippodrome’s website. It instantly struck me as being the kind of unique present I was after and I knew Roger would love it.

We Clean’s Paul Concannon said “Naming a seat in this magnificent theatre where Janet has worked tirelessly with such pride is a perfect way to recognise 20 years of service.” Alongside, a second plaque was placed in memory of We Clean colleague Anton, who sadly passed away but whose mother, Gabriela, remains part of the dedicated team.

Roger and Carol get comfy in their new dedicated seat

Roger: On the morning of my birthday Carol brought me to the Hippodrome without telling me why. Rather than buying tickets at Box Office, we were taken through the foyer and into the auditorium. I was then shown my seat - G14 and the dedicated plaque Carol had arranged for me. It was a complete surprise. Next time we book we’ll make sure we book early enough to secure my seat!

An Accessible Theatre For All On 29 January 2015 the Hippodrome will present its second Relaxed Performance of this year’s pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk specifically tailored for audiences with autism and learning disabilities. The initiative, which began last year, has been universally welcomed by those who find attending a regular performance a difficult or daunting experience. For one afternoon, young people with their schools, carers or families can escape through the magic of pantomime which has been thoughtfully prepared and presented with them in mind. The Relaxed Performance differs from a usual show with reduced sound levels and special effects, dimmed house lights so patrons can easily move in and out of the auditorium and an additional access provision of a captioner and two signers. Working alongside producing company Qdos Pantomimes and the cast it’s an organisation-wide event, from front of house to fundraising, it really is all hands on deck to realise a project of this scale. To add an extra dimension, Hippodrome staff attend specialised training in advance of the performance so that they are ready to respond to any requests that might arise during the course of the show. And several front of house spaces are also transformed into breakout spaces for the young people to go to, should the performance get too much.

With your help hundreds of people with learning disabilities and their families will enjoy pantomime in a supportive environment, specifically adapted and tailored to their needs. As an unsubsidised, registered charity, Hippodrome Plus initiatives like the Relaxed Performance simply cannot happen without the support of local businesses, individual donors and grant-making Trusts. This year, like last, we’ve teamed up with The Big Give to unlock matched funding during the Christmas Challenge which will help make your donation go even further. As part of The Big Give’s Christmas Challenge, any donation made from Thursday 4 December could be doubled, boosting the impact it has on those with learning disabilities and their families.

IMAGINE, CREATE, BELIEVE WITH YOUNG CARERS 2014 This year’s Young Carers project returned this summer, bigger and better than ever before. Over the course of two weeks 60 young people, who in their everyday life have responsibilities for looking after a parent or sibling, came to the theatre to take part in arts activities, including singing, dancing and arts and crafts. The fortnight concluded in high spirits with a sharing performance to friends and families in The Patrick Centre. With thanks to funders Baron Davenport’s Charity, The Eveson Trust, George Fentham Birmingham Charity, Joseph Hopkins Charity, The Bernard Piggott Trust, The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust, The Patrick Trust.

STUDENTS BOURNE TO RAISE THE CURTAIN Plans are taking shape for the presentation of another Hippodrome Plus Curtain Raiser during the run of Matthew Bourne’s Edward Scissorhands. The Curtain Raiser gives local students the opportunity to work alongside Matthew Bourne company members to devise a short piece of dance, inspired by movement and themes from Bourne’s production. February will see the sixth instalment of the Curtain Raiser which in previous years has given students of choreography, dance, musical theatre and drama take part in this once in a lifetime opportunity. Following 2014’s presentation of Swan Lake, Claire Morley, Head of Musical Theatre, Dance & Production Arts at Stratford-upon-Avon College commented that “working with dancers from the Matthew Bourne Company who are at the pinnacle of their profession, has provided the students with an insight and a memory that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.”

We’re passionate about working with young people and the Hippodrome are one of our best partners.

The Curtain Raiser is a unique project that enables young people to work with a world class dance company and perform on the Hippodrome stage in front of a full auditorium. As we finalise the plans for 2015, we’re keen to talk to donors who are interested in supporting this project to help enable local students realise their dreams. Contact Eve on 0121 689 3067 for more information.

THE WOW-FACTOR PART II Now in its second year, the Welcome to our World (WOW) project takes place in Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Birchfield. Hippodrome Plus practitioners used a Commonwealth Games theme to help pupils celebrate and learn more about many cultures, a number of which are represented in the inner-city school. In front of an audience of family, friends and CentreSoft representatives, traditional songs, dances, poetry and stories were performed by all year groups. Attending the WOW performance, CentreSoft’s Shelagh Fisher was able to meet some of the participants and see at first hand the theatrical skills that pupils had developed during the project. During the assembly, Sacred Heart’s Head teacher Lisa Fahy said, “We are very grateful to CentreSoft in helping support all pupils and staff to explore the world-wide heritages that the school shares as a family. Without their support this important project could not take place.” Margaret Pearson, Centresoft’s Commercial Director said “It’s amazing that we can contribute in such a positive way. Our relationship with the Hippodrome is going from strength to strength. We are very proud of this project.” And the Commonwealth baton has been well and truly passed on, from class to class in the Assembly’s finale and looking ahead to next year when WOW Part III plans to connect Sacred Heart with schools in the countries of their rich and diverse heritage.

We’d love to talk to you about how you, your business or grant-making trust can help make a difference in our community. Get in touch at development@birminghamhippodrome.com

PINSENT MASONS’ SILENT COMIC TURN

HIGH SHERIFF’S ISLAND ADVENTURE

Long-standing Hippodrome supporter Pinsent Masons backed this year’s comic turn, the fabulous silent movie Queensbury Capers which had its world premiere at our popular Southside neighbour, The Electric Cinema.

West Midlands High Sheriff, Tim Watts met local dancers and the Hippodrome Young Ambassadors who had helped to select them to perform in Matthew Bourne’s version of Lord of the Flies. This astonishing show captivated audiences during its run as part of the International Dance Festival Birmingham 2014.

The film was the culmination of a term-long project led by Hippodrome partner Richard Hayhow of Open Theatre Co working with participants aged 16-19 years from Queensbury School. All the students have learning disabilities and face the likely prospect of difficulties in securing full-time employment. Drawing on their expertise Hippodrome’s Creative Learning Manager, Liz Leck and Richard Hayhow identified slapstick as the ideal medium to develop personal communication skills, increase selfconfidence and raise self-esteem. Liz Leck said “Silent Laurel and Hardy films formed the research base and inspiration. It was amazing to see how quickly the students connected with the key concepts and were able to devise a storyline around the classic comedy hook.” Directed by Richard Hayhow, every student appears in the funny, fast-paced, black and white film with an authentic sound-track. Filmed in locations across central Birmingham, students also contributed to the decision-making process and artistic planning. Pinsent Masons partner, Peter McHugh who attended the film premiere and admitted to laughing out loud said, “It’s tremendous to see the work the Hippodrome is undertaking with a section of the city’s community who are often overlooked. Pinsent Masons is proud to have supported Queensbury Capers. I congratulate each and every one of the actors. They boast a wealth of talent and great comic timing.” Our grateful thanks go to Lauren Pickering and Birmingham City Council for their support of this project.

Tim Watts generously supported a celebratory project alongside the main production in association with the Princes Trust Birmingham. Theatre fan Tim said, ’I’m delighted that local young people have had the opportunity to develop a range of skills and self-confidence through these workshops. Self-belief goes a long way. Judging from the young people I have met and the levels of performance it is clear they are going a long way too. I wish them every future success.”

AWARD & APPLAUSE FOR WORKING PARTNERSHIPS Birmingham Hippodrome is proud to support young people at the start of their careers. Throughout the year there are placements across the organisation with young people gaining valuable workplace experience and developing multi-disciplinary skills. BMETC hospitality student, Georgina Barbour said “I have completed two sets of work experience at the Hippodrome which was very exciting. I was nervous but with the support of my college tutor and the other staff working there I soon settled in and really enjoyed my time there. I am learning lots of new skills and feeling more confident.” The Development team hosts an annual placement sponsored by Rt Revd David Urquhart, Bishop of Birmingham. This year’s recipient was sixthformer Tian Gasby from St Albans Academy, Highgate. Tian supported the team’s fundraising workload at the Wicked corporate dinner where she picked up a few insider tips from BBC’s Joanne Malin.

A MOMENT IN TIME… As part of the commemorations marking the centenary of WWI, thousands of people gathered on Sat 2 Aug to take part in the UK’s premier of Minimum Monument. The exhibition saw over 5,000 hand crafted ice sculptures being places on the steps of Chamberlain Square by members of the public. The project is the creation of award-winning Brazilian artist Néle Azevedo and featured the largest number of ice sculptures produced to date. In the lead up to the exhibition, assisted by a team of 25 Hippodrome volunteers, Néle carefully created the tiny ice figures by freezing water into male and female form moulds, which were chizzled into shape and re-frozen in one of 12 freezers ahead of being transported to the event in Chamberlain Square. The exhibition saw around 4,000 people attend with many hundreds of images appearing on social media sites. The local and national media took huge interest in the event, which kicked off a weekend of WWI commemorations in the region. The BBC Midlands Today Facebook post was shared over 3,000 times and one image from the exhibition was featured in The Guardian’s ‘The week in Pictures.’ With thanks to Néle Azevedo and her team, as well as funders Arts Council England and William A Cadbury Charitable Trust.
