Autumn Highlights from Hippodrome CREATIVE CREATIVE

X-Ray: The Unknown Quantity 120 years ago Major John-Hall Edwards took the first ever X-Ray for medical use, right here in Birmingham. This autumn we will celebrate this ground-breaking discovery with a new digital and visual arts project entitled X-Ray: The Unknown Quantity. Working closely with Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Birmingham City University, four artists will work to create a new digital dance film to be launched on 8 November to celebrate World Radiography Day. The project will also offer a range of workshops and talks for young people in hospital and schools settings. Check out birminghamhippodrome.com/xray for project updates. This programme is generously supported by the WA Cadbury Trust, the Owen Family Trust and Arts Council England. We are still seeking funders and sponsors to extend this project more widely. If you can help, contact Fundraising Manager Rachael Magson rachaelmagson@birminghamhippodrome.com or on 0121 689 3067

B-Side: Fri 23 Sun 25 Sep Hip-Hop will be taking over Southside’s public places and theatre spaces this September, with a range of workshops, talks, pop-up performances, film, dance competitions, spoken word, D/VJ’s and graffiti artists. B-Side will bring together the city’s many hip-hop talents such as local legends Break Mission, Beat Freaks, Dance Nuvo, Juice Aleem and Mickael ‘Marso’ Riviere. This festival is mostly free, with a few paid-for workshops. Expect performances, battles and beats check out our full programme at birminghamhippodrome.com/bside We hope to see you there! Thanks to our partners at The Old Rep and funders Arts Council England.

EvEn MorE rElAxEd We are pleased to announce that in 2017 we will be expanding our popular Relaxed Performances. These specially adapted performances are aimed at creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for audiences with autism, Aspergers and complex disabilities, ensuring all their needs are catered for. Demand for these special performances just keeps on growing – from 800 audience members taking part in 2013 to over 1,300 joining us at last year’s pantomime. We plan to offer four Relaxed Performances in 2017 at a range of top quality shows, reaching up to 5,000 people. Check birminghamhippodrome.com/relaxed for updates.

Your team made a sterling effort which was greatly appreciated. I do hope the target is reached for the evening and look forward to taking part in more of the same.

Major outdoor events attract 15,000 people

Furious Folly & Summer in Southside

Furious Folly took place at night fall on Fri 8 & Sat 9 July, in Sutton Park, in a no-man’s land on the battle front between the two lines. Patrons, project funders and supporters of the Hippodrome joined the 1,200 members of the public that came on each night to experience this powerful free performance. Patrons, project funders and Hippodrome supporters joined thousands of people for this powerful free performance.

Ten Not Out Alongside Furious Folly, a supporting event was held in remembrance of members of the Sutton Coldfield Cricket Club, 50 men went out to fight in WWI, but only 10 returned... An afternoon of cricket, music, games, and bracelet-making workshops was staged by the Hippodrome CREATIVE team and enjoyed by an audience of 350, who came together to commemorate and remember with tea and cake from Birmingham baker Cake Moda (pictured below with the cricket team).

It was very heart warming and just a touch emotional, that from my family’s somewhat shaky start, the Hippodrome has flourished to where it is today.

John Draysey, descendant of the Draysey brothers, on the Heritage launch

Created by Mark Anderson, this remarkable and moving experience formed part of 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary. Audiences told us they found the performance ‘shell-shocking’, ‘poignant’, ‘moving’ and ‘visually stunning’. With special thanks to the funders who made staging this show possible, particularly the Sutton Coldfield Charitable Trust, Birmingham City Council and supporters Sutton Coldfield Business Improvement District and Sutton Coldfield Chamber of Commerce. Look out for details of future exciting outdoor projects in 2017.

John Hemming, Sutton Coldfield Charitable Trust

Thank you for the opportunity, I’ve loved every moment, meeting the team and my fellow volunteers. It has been an absolute joy. once again, thank you, it’s been brilliant and I won’t ever forget ‘Furious Folly’, what an experience!

I would like to thank you for the truly memorable and evocative ‘Furious Folly’ performance. It was a very professional delivery and all the way through the process you have been a pleasure to work with.

SUMMER IN SOUTHSIDE S Our annual FREE summer festival was back with a bang when Southside met the Seaside this July. The area around the theatre was transformed with seaside sights, sounds and silliness. Visitors enjoyed a vibrant carnival atmosphere with much to enjoy, such as water zorbing, wooden street games, a marching band and our very own back dock transformed into a beach with beautiful sculptures. Over 13,000 audiences joined us over the weekend for this summer spectacular - we hope you were one of them. Being able to provide free opportunities for families and people of the city to experience the arts in different formats is important to us, and we're proud to present Summer in Southside each year as part of this programme. Our thanks go to funders at Arts Council England and sponsors Lookers Vauxhall. We hope to see you next year!

I thought the scratch performance of Hansel and Gretel was incredibly impressive and fun. And the way the performers engaged with the audience was excellent!

Ann Tonks, Hippodrome Board Member

Gala Nights Raise Nearly £70,000

‘does Your Mamma Know?’ at Mamma Mia and our 2016 Gala dinner raised a whopping £70,000 in support of Hippodrome CrEATIvE and our wider artistic plans – thank you!

Evening auctioneer, SDL Bigwood’s Rory Daly raising funds for Hippodrome CREATIVE

At the 2016 Gala Dinner in May, sponsored by Genting Hotel and Laurent-Perrier Champagne, the wowfactor soared with close to 300 guests seated on the stage for an evening of fine-dining, speciallycommissioned entertainment and a very special view of our magnificent auditorium. Speeches from Chairman John Crabtree OBE and Chief Executive Fiona Allan outlined some of the exciting future plans for the ‘old lady of Hurst Street’. These include ensuring that the Hippodrome remains at the forefront of city cultural life and reaches out to the widest communities the city’s young people and those ‘born digital’. The quick-fire live auction conducted by SDL Bigwood’s Rory Daly and the sealed bids auction raised a record-breaking total, bringing the final figure from the evening close to a fantastic £60,000. Just a few weeks later, the Patrick Centre was transformed into a Greek wedding banquet scene, to complement the summer show Mamma Mia! Evening hosts Heart FM’s Ed James and BBC presenter and Hippodrome Trustee Joanne Malin whipped up the atmosphere among the 160 guests and evening sponsor Park Regis Birmingham, helping to raise a further £10,000.

We’re delighted with the fundraising outcome. The night was a huge success. Park Regis Birmingham, Mamma Mia Gala Sponsor

A wonderful night and a fantastic sum raised. I’m all Abba’d out!

The fundraising photo-booth complete with props and post-show pop-up bar serving cocktails from The Edgbaston Boutique Hotel and Cocktail Lounge went down a treat with guests. And a surprise appearance from the stars of the show meant the party kept going beyond midnight. A huge Hippodrome shout-out to our sponsors, table hosts, guests and prize partners.

Mixing Business With Show Business

Leading Ladies

Leading Ladies network offers first class networking and client entertaining. With over 100 participating companies it’s also one of the most popular (and glamorous!)networks of its kind in the city.

Carlos Acosta Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta wowed our guests in his ‘Farewell Tour’. Leading Ladies enjoyed a Cuban themed supper, and post-show were invited to join the cast for drinks. Their patience paid off when Carlos joined the reception – what a charismatic star!

Anyone for Tennis? We teamed up with Edgbaston Priory Club during the Aegon Tennis Classic for one of our on-the-move events which attracted a sporty crowd of Leading Ladies members and their guests. Top 20 ranked player Barbara Strcyova shared insight about life on the women’s tour and playing in the grand slams. She was adamanant about the resilience required in setting and chasing targets in order to succeed – how true!

The Vintages Our first private dining event with Laurent-Perrier champagne was a huge success. Guests were seated under an exquisite canopy of flowers designed by AVA Events Styling. They were put through their vintage tasting paces by the luxury brand’s national account manager, Tony Carter. To accompany the vintage bubbles, Head Chef Stephen Christopher created a complementary menu – simply divine!

Mamma Mia A highlight of the year was the bumper turn-out for our summer hit show Mamma Mia! Guests embraced the spirit of the relaxed evening with impromptu visits to the photo booth complete with props. A seated Greekstyle supper completed the evening with macaroons supplied by Park Regis Birmingham. The perfect finale to our 2015-2016 calendar of events – woop woop! Combined these events raised over £2,000 for Hippodrome CREATIVE – thank you to ALL our sponsors, members and their generous guests who supported the prize draw at each reception. Our prize partners have included: Bridge Street Global Hospitality, Glee Club, Highfield Wellness and Beauty, Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill, Park Regis Birmingham.

The most exciting thing about my work experience was just how much energy I felt throughout the theatre.

Heritage Project launched! over the past 18 months 50 volunteers have delved into our past, with the aim of bringing our heritage to life.

Fiona Allan, Birmingham Hippodrome’s Artistic Director and Chief Executive said:

After months of hard work cataloguing all we can find, including many donations of otherwise lost materials from our patrons, it is fantastic to see our Hippodrome Heritage project come to life. I would like to thank everyone who so kindly donated or volunteered to help bring our shared heritage to life.

From show programmes and photographs to archive media footage, the foyer touch tables feature over 100 archive items taking audiences on a journey from the first performances in 1899 to shows performing on our stage today. The new archive website, BirminghamHippodromeHeritage.com, includes over 1,000 items including programmes, photographs, tickets, building plans and oral histories from staff, performers and audiences. There is also a database of every show which has graced the stage since 1899.
