Hippodrome CREATIVE Highlights As the Director of Creative Programmes here at Birmingham Hippodrome I get the wonderful job of designing a programme of exciting events to engage young people and families from all over the West Midlands. From our work in school and community settings to fun-filled festivals, to outdoor spectaculars, we hope there is something for everyone. This summer we have two flagship Hippodrome CREATIVE projects. In early July you can experience a phenomenal theatrical event in Sutton Coldfield – an outdoor night-time experience to commemorate the Battle of the Somme with Furious Folly. At the end of July our popular family friendly festival Summer in Southside returns with a seaside theme. We hope you can join us for one of these free events. Heritage Quiz volunteers Sophie Lewis, Rowena Fisher and Ivan Heard take a well-deserved ice-cream break

Or if you would like to tell us your ideas, email creative@ birminghamhippodrome.com

Dear Supporters We’re delighted to share the latest edition of Supporter Spotlight with news and updates about our recent Hippodrome CREATIVE projects and the part you have played in bringing them to life. We continue to celebrate and raise funds for our Heritage project. Our Touch Tables will shortly be in our foyers for the first time and do keep an eye open for the launch of our Heritage website. Please join us with family and friends for our next HERITAGE OPEN DAY on 24 Jul. It’s a chance to see the progress we’ve made digitising our fascinating archive and explore backstage. You are also warmly invited to two other special Hippodrome CREATIVE outdoor arts events in July. First we are proud to present Furious Folly, a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme in Sutton Park. Commissioned by 14-18 NOW, Furious Folly is part of a national programme of extraordinary arts experiences connecting people with the First World War. Late July also sees the return of our outdoor festival Summer in Southside with a theme of Southside meets Seaside. Think large-scale sand sculptures, street performances, themed workshops and ice-cream! Join in the family fun for FREE... and do something different and see something new. These projects, along with our commitment to working with disadvantaged young people, many with learning disabilities and other community groups living and learning in the city’s most deprived wards, simply couldn’t happen without your help. Whether you Name a Seat in our auditorium, take out a Patron membership, book a table at an event, hold a client entertaining reception or make a donation during our campaigns – THANK YOU – every contribution is helping to make a difference. See you in the theatre or at a Hippodrome CREATIVE project soon.

Furious Folly 8 & 9 Jul

Business Opportunities at Furious Folly

In July 2016 Hippodrome CREATIVE will present Furious Folly in Sutton Park - a large-scale outdoor production that commemorates the Battle of the Somme during World War One, where over one million men were wounded or killed.

There are a range of business partnership opportunities in connection with our major outdoor project, Furious Folly, taking place in Sutton Park on Fri 8 and Sat 9 Jul 2016.

Furious Folly will take place as night falls, in a no-man’s land on the battle front between the two lines. Disoriented, audiences will find themselves immersed within an open-air collage of sound, light, pyrotechnics and performance. Furious Folly challenges the inhumanity of conflicts past and present. Commissioned by 14-18 NOW, we are thrilled that Sutton Coldfield Charitable Trust has gifted a significant grant to support the presentation of this work in Birmingham. Hippodrome CREATIVE will also engage up to 1,000 young people in a creative learning project, working in tandem with Sutton Coldfield Cricket Club and local schools and community groups.

The opportunities offer excellent brand alignment with the UK’s most popular theatre. The capacity audience for the event totals 4,000 over two nights and will be promoted in all Hippodrome printed and digital materials and across social media channels. Partnerships will be tailored to offer attractive, wide-reaching benefits in line with a company’s business objectives and budget. We also welcome in-kind support. For more details about how your business can get involved with Furious Folly please contact Judith on 0121 689 3082 or judithgreenburgh@ birminghamhippodrome.com

Furious Folly will take place on Fri 8 & Sat 9 Jul at 10pm and will be completely FREE for audiences. Tickets need to be booked in advance via Birmingham Hippodrome on 0844 338 5000 or birminghamhippodrome.com

SUMMER IN SOUTHSIDE 23 & 24 Jul SUMMER IN SOUTHSIDE S

Our annual FREE summer festival is back - and this year get ready for Southside to meet Seaside! Over the weekend, experience a vibrant carnival atmosphere where Hurst Street will be transformed with seaside sights, sounds and smells. Be swept away by nautical encounters from a cod choir, deep-sea divers and even pirates!

Dee Allen from Lookers Vauxhall, sponsor of Summer in Southside 2016

There is something for everyone – play on wooden street games, dive into the mouth of an enormous whale, enjoy street acrobatics, a marching band with a difference and much, much more. A Summer in Southside shout-out to Lookers Vauxhall, our festival sponsor, for their support.

We are extremely proud to sponsor Summer in Southside, but the partnership will go much further than just the festival.

Volunteering is a very rewarding part of our partnership. At the Relaxed Performance the team met children, parents and carers. They came away feeling humbled yet elated to have participated.

The Beauties Awake

Our Hippodrome CREATIVE Curtain Raiser saw a group of talented choreographers and dancers aged 12-19 create and perform an original dance piece on our main stage to a full-house before a performance of Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty. New Adventures & Re:Bourne worked again in partnership with Hippodrome CREATIVE to create the 7th annual Curtain Raiser with students brought together from Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA), Stratford Upon Avon College (SUAC), Elmhurst School for Dance and Walsall College. The piece was created in just five intensive sessions and choreographed by six young local dancers, all of whom are previous Curtain Raiser performers from BOA and SUAC. They were supported by professional dance teachers Joe Walkling (New Adventures & Re:Bourne) and Clare Palethorpe (Hippodrome CREATIVE) and used the Sleeping Beauty story as inspiration for the piece. The dancers wowed the audience, and generous bucket collections on the night raised over £1,600 shared between Hippodrome CREATIVE and New Adventures & Re:Bourne to help fund further creative projects with young people. The Curtain Raiser project gives young dancers a fantastic opportunity to work alongside professionals and get a taste of what it’s like to perform on stage at a large scale theatre.

Gianni Baldi, a year 13 SUAC student, danced in last year’s Curtain Raiser and said how

As a dancer you focus on just your role in the piece. But choreographing this year I had to constantly think about everyone in the Curtain Raiser, which comes with such a sense of responsibility.

I’m delighted. The feedback was positive on all aspects from the meeting and greeting to the final bows!

Tilney Bestinvest, sponsor of Curtain Raiser 2016

A huge Hippodrome shout-out to Tilney Bestinvest, sponsor of the Curtain Raiser at Sleeping Beauty. The Tilney Bestinvest team joined the participants at rehearsals and met the Re:Bourne team to learn more about the creative process. Account Manager Helen Rees said “We all thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to see the work in progress and were amazed at the ingenuity of the students”. An extract from the Tilney Bestinvest guest blog summed up the thrill of the night, “the atmosphere was electric, especially the enthusiastic cheers that came from their respective colleges. The curtain was raised and, voilà, the live performance went off spectacularly! A huge well done to everybody involved; it was a wonderful performance and something to be really proud of. We are looking forward to hearing more about the futures of these wonderful young dancers, as we’re sure that each one will be very bright!”

We are immensely grateful to Tilney Bestinvest for their support of this flagship Hippodrome CREATIVE project. If you would like your business name linked to one of our projects, contact Judith on 0121 689 3082 or judithgreenburgh@birminghamhippodrome.com to start a conversation.

Relaxed Performance and Acorns Children’s Hospice

Insight into Access:

Relaxed Performance – most successful year yet!

All of the children at Dame Ellen Pinsent School...

Thank you to all of the staff in the sparkly hats.

This January we delivered the third Relaxed Performance of our annual pantomime working in partnership with Qdos Productions. An audience of over 1,350, the majority with autism, special needs or complex disabilities attended our most popular pantomime yet – Aladdin – starring Julian Clary, Lee Mead and Marti Pellow. This is an increase of almost 40% since our first Relaxed Performance in 2014. For this special performance we make alterations to the theatre environment and to the production itself to make it a relaxing and inclusive atmosphere for all. This year we offered a playroom and a sensory room, easy to understand signage and additional wheelchair spaces. Before their visit all theatregoers received a welcome pack and a specially made film. During the show itself our house lights stayed up and the doors remained open so that the audience could come and go as they pleased. The production was also signed, captioned and audio described. This year we were thrilled that Pantomime Dame Andrew Ryan introduced the show and all the special effects to the audience – allaying any fears and getting everyone into the panto spirit!

IMI’s John O’Shea and Elaine Morgan catch-up with Hippodrome Chairman John Crabtree during his volunteer stint at the Relaxed Performance with daughter Jessie

IMI plc

IMI plc takes pride in its corporate responsibility activities and it is particularly satisfying to know that our donation towards the Relaxed Performance has helped to create an opportunity for local young people to experience the fun of pantomime and a anxiety-free visit to the theatre.

We have a special thank you to make to Mr & Mrs Varney (pictured above) Patrons of the theatre who this year enabled us to purchase additional sensory toys for the relaxed performance. These toys will now be used in all our work with children, young people and adults with access needs. Also a big thank you to our friends at Irwin Mitchell (pictured right) and Calthorpe Estates who have yet again volunteered at the Relaxed Performance.

Everything was executed to perfection. All my colleagues are converted to panto, they have found their inner child.

Acorns Family Panto Treat We are thrilled to have been part of a pilot programme working with Midlands-based Acorns Children’s Hospice. 10 families with children with life-limiting conditions visited Birmingham Hippodrome to take part in family days, making magic memories here at the theatre.

Pictured clockwise are Acorns families meeting panto stars, Matt Slack, Marti Pellow and Lee Mead

Supported by specialist training from Acorns staff, Birmingham Hippodrome welcomed Acorns children, their siblings and parents to enjoy time together. At this year’s pantomime, these special families enjoyed craft and singing workshops, a backstage tour and relaxation in a sensory room before watching a performance of Aladdin and meeting the cast. We’re looking forward to welcoming more Acorns families to the next day in April at Mary Poppins. Thanks to our funders, Children & the Arts and Acorns donors.

It’s been the best day ever – some amazing memories have been made.

Mixing Business With Show Business

Leading Ladies:

Leading From The Front Our final event of 2015 ended in style with an inspiring conversation between two new business leaders: the Hippodrome’s Chief Executive Fiona Allan and Jan Teo, Chief Executive of Birmingham Royal Ballet. Guests took away tips about making your own opportunities, the role of lady luck and a can-do attitude. The reception was followed by a performance of BRB’s The Nutcracker, the quintessential festive production.

Behind The Curtain with Panto Star Lee Mead The 2016 calendar opened with a Behind the Curtain meet-up with panto star Lee Mead hosted by Hippodrome Trustee and BBC presenter Joanne Malin. Guests were treated to an up-close experience of the Aladdin panto set by Hippodrome Head of Technical Services, Barry Hope. And Lee Mead shared moments from his career spanning Any Dream Will Do to major musical star, prime-time TV and the UK’s most popular pantomime.

Curtain Raiser Casts a Spell at Sleeping Beauty New Adventures’ Principal dancer, Dominic North joined guests before a performance of Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty and revealed a fascinating insight into the different paths that can lead to an accomplished dance career. The night also featured our Curtain Raiser, a flagship Hippodrome CREATIVE project. Dance students from four local schools and colleges worked alongside young local choreographers and professional dancers from New Adventure’s dance company to create and perform an original piece inspired by Sleeping Beauty. They performed on the main stage to a sell-out audience prior to curtain up. An unforgettable experience for the participants. Bravo! Combined, these three events raised over £3,000 for Hippodrome CREATIVE projects – thank you to ALL our sponsors, members and their guests.

Local Dance School Make Their Mark Students at Jaide’s Stage Studios danced down the aisles to visit a seat named in honour of the 15th anniversary of the performing arts school. A seat naming certificate was presented to the school’s principal, Jaide Ellery-Martin at their 15th annual dance show and an engraved plaque will now appear on their chosen seat in the historical Hippodrome auditorium for the next 10 years.

I can’t believe what the students Jaide said: organised for me and I was completely overwhelmed and very emotional when the plaque was presented to me on the last night of my show.

The Rugby-based school enjoys many visits to the Hippodrome and a number of the young dancers take part in the holiday workshops run by our Creative Learning team. Students surprised principal Jaide Ellery-Martin with an engraved plaque, which will now appear on their chosen seat in our historical auditorium for a decade. YOU TOO can name a seat! From £250 - to begin your seat naming story call us on 0121 689 3068 or email rosannamilsom@birminghamhippodrome.com
