Birmingham Hippodrome is on a mission to enrich the cultural life of the region. Our vision is to create a distinctive, world-class Birmingham cultural scene with the Hippodrome at its heart. We reach over one million people a year through on and off stage programmes of work, digital presence, and performances in Birmingham and beyond; providing that “goosebumps” feeling through memorable and extraordinary experiences.

We are an independent charity, run by a board of voluntary trustees with no regular revenue funding from public sources. We frequently invest in projects alongside Arts Council England and with Birmingham City Council. Generous support is received from the business community through sponsorship and other partnerships; from individuals through donations and memberships; and from grant-making trusts for special programming and infrastructure projects. As a major employer in the region, we play a leading role in the Southside Business Improvement District.

This role reports to the Head of Fundraising and Development within the Fundraising and Development department. The salary for this role is £32 - £34k (full time rate) plus lots of staff perks!

We offer different ways to work flexibly, so please feel free to contact us as we are open to part-time working and/or job sharing. This role also benefits from hybrid working.

The Role

As we embark upon an ambitious and exciting new five-year business plan the Fundraising Manager will take a lead role in transforming our philanthropy and membership programmes for individuals, to generate income that helps the organisation achieve its aspirations and targets for its inspiring Artistic, Producing, Learning & Participation and Festivals programmes. They will also play a pivotal role in our Capital Fundraising Campaign.

You will be an experienced Fundraising professional, with a track record in developing and securing individual support from Major Donors to Micro-Philanthropy, as well as delivering successful fundraising campaigns and events.

You will be expected to work closely with the Creative Director, Executive team, Fundraising colleagues and other departments across the organisation while building productive relationships with the Board of Trustees that maximise our fundraising potential across wider networks.

What does success look like in this role

Takes a lead role in transforming our philanthropy and membership programmes for individual fundraising to deliver on the aspirations and targets for our inspiring Artistic, Festivals and Learning and Participation programme.

Plays a pivotal role in our Capital Fundraising Campaign over the next 5 years.

Strategy & Reporting

In conjunction with the Head of Development, play a robust role to develop and support the delivery of a compelling Fundraising Strategy.

Take lead responsibility for managing the development, increase of and reporting on Individual Giving streams and public campaigns in line with the business plan aims and financial targets

Manage finance reporting and financial analysis of individual giving income streams, forecasting and remodelling as required.

Build productive relationships with the Executive team and Trustees to maximise the fundraising potential of wider networks.

Track industry and donor trends, analyse data and create income profiling models.

Regularly contribute to the Gift Aid process and annual claim to boost total revenue generated through individual support.

Support the Head of Fundraising and Development with Fundraising Regulation and Compliance, with a lead role on GDPR compliance, updating departmental policies and procedures where relevant

Major Gifts and Individual Giving

Work closely with the Head of Fundraising and Development to further develop and implement successful strategies for increasing major gifts (at least five figures) and legacies.

Manage the strategy for mid-size gifts and micro-philanthropy, working closely with the Development Administrator, Information & Sales Team and Visitor Services teams on delivery and implementation.

Deliver and manage successful individual giving initiatives including: 1899 Club, Name a Seat, Fundraising Lotteries, Public Campaigns, and other giving channels

Manage a portfolio of donor pipelines, including prospecting, cultivation and conversion drawing on a critical set of carefully recorded plans in our business CRM.

Undertake detailed donor research, pipelining and profile building to inform the Major Giving and Mid-range Gifts strategy.

Individual Membership and Regular Giving Schemes

Manage the Patrons membership scheme working closely with the team Administrator. This will include a strategy for growth, a timely renewals process and highquality stewardship while actively contributing to the wider organisational review of all memberships.

Manage the 1899 Club, our regular giving scheme, ensuring appropriate communications and excellent stewardship leading to growth in revenue from this channel

Ensure that schemes have an appropriate price structure, attractive benefits, underpinned by high-quality assets, are relevant and in line with business plan objectives.

Cultivate and steward current donors through a considered creative donor engagement programme, including volunteering opportunities, relevant communications, cultivation and thanking events, in a timely manner.

Funding Applications

In conjunction with Head of Department and relevant Artistic, Learning & Participation and Festivals colleagues, help shape bids and projects to become ‘fundraising ready’ in line with the strategy for fundraising through Trusts and grant-making bodies.

Undertake broader Trust and Grant research to support the creation and evolution of a pipeline of potential funding.

Support the Head of Department in drafting and proofing high-quality impact reports submitted in a timely manner to meet the terms set out by funding bodies.

Devise strategic step plans for Trust and grant making bodies and work closely with the team Administrator to ensure accurate input and updating of plans, application and reporting deadlines, award documentation in relevant Tessitura records.

Events

Work closely with the Head of Department and relevant teams to conceptualise, promote, sell and deliver a varied programme of fundraising events.

Develop relationships with external partners that lead to sourcing attractive prizes and auction items for a range of fundraising events

Devise and implement a refreshed strategy for cultivation events, advising on target names and appropriate format and linking closely with identified areas of the business plan and fundraising targets.

Represent the Hippodrome at internal and external networking events in person or online on a regular basis, to promote the values of Birmingham Hippodrome, its charitable status and its fundraising goals.

Marketing and Communications

Work closely with Marketing and Communication Colleagues to produce key marketing and communications materials in support of our fundraising aims and optimise external coverage of our progress and successes.

Creative copywriting suitable for publication in a range of digital/printed fundraising and development assets, including campaigns, webpages, department newsletter.

Write compelling ‘ cases for support’ varying the tone, register and content to suit the target audience/donor.

Manage and update relevant webpages and web developments with lively content, useful links, triggered emails intended to increase fundraising support

Business Systems and Sector Knowledge

A Tessitura (CRM) super user, you will progress the IT capabilities of the system to best support the fundraising strategy and act as a champion for its use by following webinars and disseminating learnings as appropriate.

Data analysis and data driven decision-making will be key to the role - segmenting data in order to profile and target donors as part of an intelligent fundraising strategy.

Maintain active engagement with the Tessitura Development Forum, develop a peer network and attend meetings to optimise knowledge about the system and how it can drive fundraising success.

Comply with all statutory and Hippodrome requirements in the areas of compliance such as safeguarding, GDPR, health and safety. Complete all compulsory E-learning training requirements as directed by HR to ensure relevant knowledge in these areas

Keep actively up to date with new fundraising practices and technologies –researching opportunities through to implementation.

This role will deputise for the Head of Department where required. The role will be expected to perform other reasonable duties as assigned by the Head of Development.

Comfortable having difficult conversations as required.

Proven track-record and 2-3 years’ experience in a similar role managing successful philanthropy and membership programmes for individuals

Direct personal experience of successful solicitation of gifts and donations from individuals

Direct experience of developing and securing major gifts (ideally 5-figure upwards)

Relevant Experience

Experience of working with a target driven environment

Experience of researching and writing high-quality, well-structured and persuasive communication assets, and delivering convincing verbal presentations

Experience of organising significant fundraising events

Experience of balancing different projects simultaneously to meet targets and deadlines

Confidence in presenting, pitching and public speaking

Experience of working in an arts or cultural charity

Experience of securing and managing legacies

Demonstrable high-level copywriting, proofing and editing skills, marketing design and website editing in a creative environment

Excellent literacy, numeracy and communication skills

Scans the philanthropy environment, keeps abreast of new developments, trends and social changes that may affect or improve successful fundraising

Relevant Qualifications

Demonstrable level of industry experience and professional development, training or equivalent in the philanthropy sector
