“With the centenary of the World War One armistice, we’ve programmed a number of commemorative experiences around War Horse.” Ever since arriving at Birmingham Hippodrome nearly three years ago, I’ve been looking forward to welcoming this outstanding National Theatre production back to our stage. It’s one of my favourites, and I was thrilled to meet Joey himself (pictured below) at our recent Season Taster, with Hippodrome Friends and group bookers. On 11 November itself, we will present Homecomings, a free series of poignant performances on the concourse at New Street Station with our Musical Theatre Youth Company. Throughout October, do try the immersive Virtual Reality experience Empire Soldiers in our foyers, highlighting the stories of many forgotten Caribbean and South Asian soldiers, and described in the New Scientist as “short, poetic and moving”. In our Patrick Studio, ex-service personnel perform in Bravo 22 Company’s Unspoken alongside other thought-provoking pieces that examine contemporary themes around conflict. Christmas is coming around again with Birmingham Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker followed by the swashbuckling adventure, magic and fairy dust of our panto Peter Pan. For smaller children, our Christmas offer Emily Brown and the Thing, in the Patrick Studio, is a wonderful musical adventure.

In this brochure you’ll also find a terrific line up for 2019. One of the highlights of our 120th birthday year will surely be our first major co-production of a musical, The Color Purple. Others not to miss include Kinky Boots, Les Misérables, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, and the return of Mark Morris Dance Group with Pepperland, a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the classic Beatles album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Did you know we are now open from 10am Mon Sat? Visit our new Coffee Bar for the best flat white in Southside, check out our new foyer galleries, or see a free performance on alternate Fridays. For special occasions (or just a convenient bite before the show), sample our seasonal menus in our award-winning Circle Restaurant, or give a loved one the VIP treatment in our private Qdos Lounge. Enjoy reading through this brochure and planning your next trips to Birmingham Hippodrome. And keep your eyes open for announcements relating to our special 120th anniversary plans. More soon!

Fire & Fury A dramatic mixed bill of two ballets that evoke the politics and power of the past to explore the present. When young King Louis XIV of France danced the role of the Sun God in a spectacular court entertainment he earned himself the soubriquet The Sun King. War and Peace Prokofiev Based on Leo Tolstoy’s novel, the narrative of War and Peace follows the tribulations of Russian society as Napoleon edges closer to the country’s borders. The spirited Natasha and her betrothed Andrei find their young love is challenged by temptation, while Pierre, an idealistic nobleman, wants to change Russian life for the better. As their fates intertwine during the 1812 invasion they find their stories unfold during a time when Russian lives would change forever.

David Pountney’s new production will be as ambitious and epic in scale as the novel itself. The huge set, video projections and stunning costumes by Marie-Jeanne Lecca portray the grandeur of Russian society in the 1800s. WNO Music Director Tomáš Hanus will conduct a unique performing version of the score, based on Katya Emrolaeva and Rita McAllister’s new critical edition of Prokofiev’s original, complete with opulent dances and arias, and stirring melodies.

La traviata

La Cenerentola (Cinderella)

Verdi

Rossini

Alfredo has fallen head over heels in love with the courtesan Violetta, but his father Germont disapproves of the fallen woman.

Rossini’s delightful retelling of Cinderella but with a few twists along the way.

Penniless and fearing she will soon die, Violetta agrees to leave Alfredo believing it is in his best interest. It is only when Germont hears that she is on her deathbed that he realises the error of his ways, and confesses all to Alfredo. But is it too late? The conflict of duty and thwarted love has made La traviata a favourite with opera audiences across the world. This classic production with sumptuous mid 19th-century costumes features some of Verdi’s most evocative music, including the Brindisi (the drinking song) - one of the best known melodies in opera.

The kind-hearted Angelina (Cinderella) is forced to scrub the floors by her wicked stepfather, while her ugly sisters prepare to go to the Prince’s grand ball at the palace. As she dreams of a better life she is visited by a mysterious old beggar man. He tells her she will go to the ball, and will also be rewarded for her kind heart. Will she live happily ever after? WNO transports you into a candy-coloured world of fairytale full of wit, larger than life characters, delightful mice and vibrant costumes. Tomáš Hanus conducts Rossini’s sparkling score, as we watch La Cenerentola transform from rags to riches through the power of music.

The Magic Flute Mozart

Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball) Verdi Love, power and politics collide in Un ballo in maschera - based on the real life assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden who was shot at a masked ball in 1792. Riccardo (Gustav) adores Amelia, but when her husband discovers their love affair, he plots against the king, leading to murder on the dancefloor. Gwyn Hughes Jones and Mary Elizabeth Williams lead the cast in this tale of deception, intrigue, love and revenge. The score is one of Verdi’s most intense, providing the musical passion that drives this thrilling new production. WNO Artistic Director David Pountney reunites with WNO Conductor Laureate Carlo Rizzi and the same creative team behind La forza del destino for the second part of our Verdi Trilogy.

Welsh National Opera’s irresistible production of The Magic Flute transports you to a dream world where you’ll meet colourful characters including a newspaper-reading lion and a fish doubling as a bicycle. Combined with a witty story, moments of enchantment and Mozart’s sublime music, including the magnificent Queen of the Night aria, it adds up to an unforgettable opera experience for all ages. Roberto Devereux has been accused of treason. In order to gain his freedom he simply has to present the ring his lover, Queen Elizabeth I, has bestowed upon him. But Devereux is secretly in love with Sara, who he refuses to renounce, leaving Elizabeth heartbroken and compelled to sign his death warrant. Roberto Devereux contains some of Donizetti’s most spine-tingling melodies including the emotional Vivi, in grato, a lei accanto performed by Elizabeth I as her world falls apart around her in a heart wrenching finale. WNO’s criticallyacclaimed production has a dramatic intensity and a striking design guaranteed to leave your heart racing.

Jill Murphy’s

Rosie Kay Dance Company In association with The British Army

The Worst Witch

A thrilling portrait of army life telling the stories of men and women serving on the front line.

The much-loved characters come to life on stage.

In 2008, choreographer Rosie Kay joined the 4th Battalion The Rifles, participating in full battle exercises and visiting the National Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre. What came of these observations was the award-winning, five-star work 5 Soldiers.

Long before Harry Potter there was Mildred Hubble, an ordinary girl who found herself at a school for witches.

Ten years on, Rosie Kay expands the work for the large stage with 10 Soldiers. Now a full Army squad, 10 Soldiers looks at life in 2019’s British Army including issues of equality and diversity. Charged with Kay’s trademark intense athletic dance theatre, 10 Soldiers explores how the human body - with both fragility and incredible inner strength - remains on the frontline of war. “War from a female perspective packs a punch... taut, visceral, compassionate”

Jealous Ethel Hallow is always out to spoil Mildred’s fun. Miss Hardbroom is opposed to all fun in general. And just as Mildred sparks some inevitable mayhem certain to upset them both, an old enemy returns with a plan for revenge that could threaten not just the Academy, but the whole world. Jill Murphy’s The Worst Witch stories have sold more than five million copies worldwide. This major new story written by Emma Reeves and directed by Theresa Heskins, features original songs, music, magic and a dose of Mildred’s unique brand of utter pandemonium! Age Guidance 7+

Direct from the West End, Annie returns to Birmingham Hippodrome in 2019. This “glorious revival” (The Times) comes to Birmingham for three weeks only! Set in 1930s New York during The Great Depression, brave young Annie is forced to live a life of misery at Miss Hannigan’s orphanage. Her luck soon changes when she’s chosen to spend a fairytale Christmas with famous billionaire, Oliver Warbucks. Meanwhile, spiteful Miss Hannigan has other ideas and hatches a plan to spoil Annie’s search for her true family...

With its Tony® Award-winning book and score, including the unforgettable songs It’s the Hard-Knock Life, Easy Street, I Don’t Need Anything But You and Tomorrow, you can bet your bottom dollar that you’ll love it!

Conditions of sale Full terms and conditions are available at birminghamhippodrome.com or you can call us on 0844 338 5000* and just ask one of our friendly team. Children We want our productions to be enjoyed by everyone. And, as much as we love young children, they can sometimes be noisy or disruptive; they can also get bored or easily upset by special effects, and nobody wants that. Unless otherwise stated, we do not admit children under 3 to our main house performances. We advise 5+ for performances such as ballet and pantomime, and other age guidance is occasionally offered (check when booking). For specific family shows in our Patrick Studio, we will always indicate age guidance and any terms or prices regarding babes-in-arms. Everyone admitted to the theatre needs to be in possession of a ticket, and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult at all times so we know they are safe. Access • Assisted Performances: for dates of relaxed, audiodescribed, captioned or BSL interpreted performances, please see the show pages or refer to the diary on pages 48/49. Visit birminghamhippodrome.com or call our Access phone line on 0121 689 1060 for further details. • Visually-impaired: Guide dogs are very welcome in the theatre and can be looked after by staff during performances. Should you require a seat close to entrances, please ask when booking. Please let us know when booking if you need any help. Please book your guide dog in with Ticket Sales in advance of your visit. • Deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing: if you’d like a receiver, just ask at our cloakroom. Signed performances, with seats close to the signer, are arranged. • Impaired mobility: Automatic doors and lifts are available for wheelchair users and we have wheelchair positions both in our main auditorium and Patrick Studio. We have accessible unisex and ambulant disabled toilets on all levels, plus low-level counter service. Circle Restaurant is also fully accessible. We kindly request that only food and drink purchased from us is consumed on the premises (see inside front cover for some tasty options). Please do not bring your own food and drink items into the venue. Enjoy your next visit! Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of this information, changes may occur.
