“Now more than ever cultural organisations need to bring people together”

Photo: Simon Hadley

Fiona welcomes Robert Battle - Artistic Director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater who performed with us in Sep 2016 to over 5300 people, including a free open rehearsal for schools.

I’ve long been a great believer in the power that arts and culture have to bring communities together, to create a more coherent society, and to help people view the world around them differently. And whatever your personal views on Brexit, Europe, US politics or even the Birmingham Christmas Markets, I am sure we can all agree on one thing: we are running the risk of becoming a dis-United Kingdom. Now more than ever, cultural organisations need to reach out across income, age, education and ethnic divides, to bring people together. Through 2017, we will be expanding our schools network, increasing our range of free and low cost activity, and opening our doors during the daytime to engage with the broadest community possible. Everyone’s welcome.

Fiona Allan Artistic Director & Chief Executive chiefexecutive@birminghamhippodrome.com

Although best known of course for the brilliant musicals, pantomime, opera and dance we present, that together make us the UK’s most popular single theatre, the Hippodrome is an unsubsidised charity, and needs your support. Any surplus from ticket sales, the bars, the restaurant and your donations goes directly to supporting the valuable work we do in bringing communities together through arts and culture. Overleaf, I’ve highlighted a few of my own personal favourites for the months ahead. I’d love to hear about yours too, so do share using #MyHippodrome or email me at the address below. Please help us to spread the word, and next time you come, perhaps bring someone who hasn’t been here before. There is nothing quite like sharing the experience of live theatre. Thank you for your continuing support.

The Red Shoes “Matthew Bourne has long been one of my favourite artists and I can’t wait to see his latest show always so magical. We are in for a treat.” Dance: Sampled “We had so much fantastic feedback after our first Sampled in 2016, I’ve brought it back with new acts! Don’t miss FREE activity in the foyers (and a chance to have a go yourself), before sampling ballet, contemporary, Hip-Hop, tango and more.” Billy Elliot “This story is so inspirational - I’m so pleased we have it coming to Birmingham for the first time. I’m one of many who believe Billy Elliot to be one of the greatest British musicals of all time.” B-SIDE Hip-Hop Festival “Even if, like me, you struggle to tell your locking from your popping, the energy of our second Hip-Hop festival will be just contagious. Impress the teenagers in your life or bring the whole family for FREE entertainment in and around the Hippodrome.” Funny Girl “I grew up listening to Barbra Streisand singing this soundtrack - but seeing this show live is just so much better. Sheridan Smith’s performance was a smash in the West End if you can get a ticket, come and see why.”

Artistic Director’s Highlights

“With so much Hippodrome variety to look forward to in an exciting 2017, here are some of my personal selections.

The Addams Family “A UK premiere for this musical comedy, and, as a fan of the original TV show, I can’t wait to see how it is staged. Creepy and kooky works for me!” BRB Three Short Story Ballets “Much as I love the big full-length classics, I am always more keen to see the triple bills. Three very different works rolled into one great evening, including Le Baiser de la fée (The Fairy’s Kiss) which is one of my favourite short ballets.” Madam Butterfly and Miss Saigon “Not everyone will know that the tragic story of Miss Saigon is drawn from the opera Madam Butterfly. Do you prefer Puccini’s Un bel di or Boublil & Schonberg’s Last Night of the World? I’m going to make sure I see both.” The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time “I can’t see this play enough. Birmingham audiences adored it last time, so we are bringing it back. Look at the world through a different gaze, and experience a night in the theatre you’ll be talking about for a long time.”

Autumn

Share your favourites online using #MyHippodrome.”

Hairspray “When I grow up, I want to be a bit more like Tracy Turnblad. She fights for equality, stands up for what she believes in, and snags the good-looking fella. Good Morning, Birmingham!” Acosta Danza - Debut “Cuba punches above its weight when it comes to producing incredible dancers. Nowhere is this better seen than in Carlos Acosta’s new dance company, here on their first ever UK tour. The programme will feature a mix of ballet and contemporary dance, and a guest appearance from Carlos himself.” Beautiful “I’ve always loved Carole King’s music, but I never knew her story until I saw this musical. I came out of the theatre wanting to see it again straight away.” 03

The Red Shoes “Britain’s most successful choreographer will blow your mind with his sheer imagination, wit and brio” The Times

“Bourne is a masterly storyteller” New York Times

A beloved fairytale and Academy Award-winning movie, The Red Shoes has seduced audiences and inspired generations of dancers with its tale of obsession, possession and one girl’s dream to be the greatest dancer in the world. Victoria Page lives to dance but her ambitions become a battleground between the two men who inspire her passion.

The Red Shoes is set to a new score arranged by Terry Davies using the mesmerising music of golden-age Hollywood composer, Bernard Herrmann. Most famous for his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles and Martin Scorsese, Hermann’s music ranges from the witty and playfully robust to the achingly romantic and bittersweet.

Matthew Bourne’s magical new adaptation of the legendary Powell and Pressburger film reunites the team who brought you New Adventures’ world-wide hit, Sleeping Beauty, with sumptuous designs by Lez Brotherston (set and costumes), Paule Constable (lighting) and Paul Groothuis (sound).

An intoxicating drama where life imitates art with fateful consequences, The Red Shoes will dazzle your senses and break your heart. Curtain Raiser Wed 8 Feb A special short performance ahead of the main show displaying the talents of local young dancers. In collaboration with Re:Bourne.

Sean Lock Keep It Light

Jon Richardson The Old Man

Every three years the comedian Sean Lock writes and tours a new stand-up show. Well he’s only gone and done it again!

The British Comedy Award nominee and star of Live At The Apollo and 8 Out Of 10 Cats is embarking on a nationwide tour to complain about the state of the world and offer no solutions. Since his last show he has become a husband and father, seen the UK vote to leave the EU and watched the rise of Donald Trump, all of which leaves him asking one question, why does it seem that no one else alive can correctly load a dishwasher?

What’s he like? Come and see what he’s blithering on about this time. “He just lets the brilliance of his material dominate the room” The Guardian

“Lock at his best is gloriously intelligent, deliciously unlikely and hilariously funny” The Times

Come and see what Jon Richardson can do with words when he has more than thirty seconds to work with. Or should that be “with which to work”?

Fri 19 - Sun 21 May 2017

Material Men redux features a newly commissioned score by acclaimed Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin including sound design by Leafcutter John. It is played live on stage by The Smith Quartet.

For m¡longa, internationally celebrated choreographer and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, collaborates with an incredibly talented cast of 17 performers, uniting Argentinean tango dancers, contemporary dancers and live musicians to create a show that brings his own unique style to tango.

Milonga is the term for a tango dance party. Inspired by the late night milonga scene held in the intimate bars of Buenos Aires, Cherkaoui draws on traditional influences and adds a contemporary twist. The result is a seductive and fascinating exploration of tango for the 21st century.

Coppélia “Vivid and mischievous... outstanding” Daily Express

Birmingham Post

When eccentric toymaker Dr Coppélius leaves his greatest creation, the doll Coppélia, on his workshop balcony she’s soon causing quite a stir in the village. Lovers Franz and Swanilda both want to find out what is going on; but things are even stranger than they seem. With a wild mix of abracadabra, comic chaos is unleashed as Dr Coppélius tries to bring Coppélia to life and Swanilda tries to stop him. A timeless classic from the golden age of classical ballet, Coppélia, with its tuneful, romantic music, stands alongside such classics as Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty as one of the great works of the 19th century.

Madam Butterfly

Puccini

Joachim Herz’s iconic production of Madam Butterfly returns to Birmingham for three performances. Each scene in this classic staging looks like a sepia photograph through which we glimpse a vanished world. The story of Butterfly and her American naval officer sees Eastern and Western cultures collide with tragic consequences, delivered through Puccini’s irresistible score featuring the Flower Duet and Humming Chorus, and the beautifully moving aria Un bel dì.

Johann Strauss II

Richard Strauss

Centred around a magnificent masquerade ball, Die Fledermaus is set to a rich, romantic score by Johann Strauss featuring some of the most irresistible melodies ever written for stage.

Richard Strauss’ sumptuous opera offers comedy and poignant drama in equal measure. This bittersweet narrative focuses on the emotions of the characters, as we see the aristocratic Marschallin learn to accept the passing of time and give up her young lover to the beautiful, youthful Sophie.

As the characters are brought together in various guises, we set the scene for a hilarious story of mistaken identity. Featuring WNO favourite, Mary Elizabeth Williams in the leading role of Rosalinde, it’s full of splendour, posh frocks and masks, and warm comedy.

This new production will see lavish costumes, entwined with beautiful music as Rebecca Evans debuts in the iconic role of the Marschallin.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you…

It’s easy to find us Main entrance address Hurst St, Southside, Birmingham, B5 4TB. We also have a public entrance on Thorp St. We are easy to find and have great connections to public transport and nearby car parks. The Arcadian Car Park (Bromsgrove St, B5 6NU) opposite our main entrance has disabled parking with access to street level. Check networkwestmidlands.com for details on public transport routes, or call Traveline on 0871 200 2233. Both New Street and Moor Street train stations are very close and well signposted. Many bus routes pass very nearby, and we are well-served by taxi ranks. Please note Temporary re-routing of traffic means that there is no access to Hill Street or Smallbrook Queensway via Ladywell Walk and Hurst Street. Please leave plenty of time for your journey, especially if travelling to us from the north or west. For more information, see birminghamhippodrome.com/yourvisit

Conditions of sale Full terms and conditions are available at birminghamhippodrome.com or you can call us on 0844 338 5000 and just ask one of our friendly team. Children We want our productions to be enjoyed by everyone. And, as much as we love young children, they can sometimes be noisy or disruptive; they can also get bored or easily upset by special effects, and nobody wants that. Unless otherwise stated, we do not admit children under 3 to our regular performances. We advise 5+ for performances such as ballet, and other age guidance is occasionally offered (check when booking). Everyone admitted to the theatre needs to be in possession of a ticket, and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult at all times so we know they are safe. Pantomime is intended to entertain audiences of all ages with something for everyone. It includes lots of traditional laughs, slapstick fun, some scary moments and impressive effects, plus some cheeky innuendo which most audiences find goes over the heads of children. This production features a short 3D film with some ‘mild peril’. Parents should judge whether younger or more sensitive children would find this upsetting. Age guidance 5+, no under 3s admitted, and no babes in arms. Access • Assisted Performances: for dates of relaxed, audiodescribed, captioned or signed performances, please see pages 6, 44 & 45. Concessions vary. Visit birminghamhippodrome.com or call 0844 338 5000 for further details. • Visually-impaired: Guide dogs are very welcome in the theatre and can be looked after by staff during performances. Should you require a seat close to entrances, please ask when booking. Please let us know when booking if you need any help. • Deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing: if you’d like a receiver, just ask at our cloakroom. Signed performances, with seats close to the signer, are arranged - see p6. • Impaired mobility: Automatic doors and lifts are available for wheelchair users and we have wheelchair positions both in our main auditorium and Patrick Centre studio. We have accessible unisex and ambulant disabled toilets on all levels, plus low-level counter service. Circle Restaurant is also fully accessible. A note on food and drink We run all our catering services in-house, so when you eat or drink with us you are helping assist our artistic aims as an unsubsidised charitable trust. We kindly request that only food and drink purchased from us is consumed on the premises (see pages 22/23 for some tasty options). Please do not bring your own food and drink items into the venue. Enjoy your next visit! Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of this information, changes may occur.
