Over the last few months we’ve seen attendance records broken and huge numbers of newcomers enjoying their first visit to the Hippodrome. Thanks for all your positive feedback and support. Our claim to being ‘The West End in the West Midlands’ is further reinforced as we enter an extraordinary 18 month period. We’ll be proudly presenting the very best of the big award-winning shows: from Funny Girl (returns only!) to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, from Miss Saigon to Acosta Danza, from Beautiful and Sunset Boulevard to Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella. And next year will be even bigger as both Wicked and War Horse return either side of a summer season of the RSC’s Matilda. There’s really never been a better time to become a Hippodrome Friend for priority booking and great discounts. But it’s not all about the main stage.

Outdoors, in our neighbourhood streets and squares, we’ll be having some countryside fun with Summer in Southside in June, and welcoming the return of the Weekender Festival in September. If you’ve never been in our 200-seat Patrick Centre studio, see it brought to life with a fantastic new performance season (see central blue pages). With our focus firmly on dance, alongside our partners Birmingham Royal Ballet and DanceXchange, we’re presenting some jaw-dropping hip-hop, graceful

ballet and South Asian styles, plus some contemporary work in progress and introductions to the process of creating new dance. There’s also some risqué cabaret, interactive drama, and some magical family shows including a new Christmas production, The Snow Dragon. Part of the thrill of live smaller-scale performances is the up-close impact where you can see the intensity right there in the eyes of the performers – it’s an experience like no other.

It’s been the movie all children (and parents) have been singing along to and now you can join us for a full Sing-a-Long-a screening of Disney’s Frozen. Follow Anna on her journey to find her sister Elsa, the Snow Queen and put an end to her icy spell. With two ‘Singalonga’ Princesses on hand to guide you through the film, they will show you how to use your free props bag as you interact with the story as it unfolds on screen. Dress up as your favourite character and experience Disney’s most popular animation film again in a whole new light. With lyrics on the screen throughout the film, there’s no excuse not to sing along!

Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music For over 50 years, the iconic film The Sound of Music has told the story of the Von Trapp family during WW2 and their escape across the Alps. Join us for a screening of the classic Julie Andrews musical film in full-screen technicolour, complete with lyric subtitles so you can sing along. The film is brought to life with your host, leading a vocal warm-up and teaching you how to interact with the story with your special free props bag for key moments in the film. There will be a fancy dress contest too. Dressing up is not compulsory but it is your chance to experience the film as never before and dress up as your favourite thing!

B-SIDE Hip-Hop Festival It’s back! Our annual FREE Hip-Hop festival returns in May for its second year. Enjoy pop-up performances, spoken word, graffiti, workshops, dance battles and much, much more. See national and international artists and some of the city’s finest local Hip-Hop talents do their thing and take over our local Southside district. Deeply rooted in Argentinean culture, tango has fascinated and captivated the world with its sexuality, power and beauty. For m¡longa, internationally celebrated choreographer and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, collaborates with an incredibly talented cast of 17 performers, uniting Argentinean tango dancers, contemporary dancers and live musicians to create a show that brings his own unique style to tango.

Milonga is the term for a tango dance party. Inspired by the late night milonga scene held in the intimate bars of Buenos Aires, Cherkaoui draws on traditional influences and adds a contemporary twist. The result is a seductive and fascinating exploration of tango for the 21st century.

Summer in Southside Escape to the Countryside, on the streets of Southside this Summer! This year, our annual neighbourhood festival celebrates the great outdoors where wildlife roams, folk dance and live music fills the air.

Watch maypole garlands weave in the air to the sights and sounds of street-dance and beatboxing, or become part of the scenery and create your own cardboard country-scape. You might even bump into a farmer, a friendly fox and a brass band!

Over the weekend, enjoy the familiar to the peculiar and unearth the hidden delights of our city. We’ll be closing down the roads around the theatre to find an alternative sports days on the Village Green, tranquillity in The Arcadian, see a giant tree grow and listen to magical stories and enchanting music.

Come and explore all that this country fayre has to offer and delight in the transformation of Southside to a place of escapism and adventure. Be sure to bring your wellies we’re off to the Countryside!

Richard Strauss’ sumptuous opera offers comedy and poignant drama in equal measure. This bittersweet narrative focuses on the emotions of the characters, as we see the aristocratic Marschallin learn to accept the passing of time and give up her young lover to the beautiful, youthful Sophie.

As the characters are brought together in various guises, we set the scene for a hilarious story of mistaken identity. Featuring WNO favourite, Mary Elizabeth Williams in the leading role of Rosalinde, it’s full of splendour, posh frocks and masks, and warm comedy.

Jungle Book

Navadal (meaning ‘new shoots’) is Akademi’s national South Asian youth dance competition, run this year in partnership with One Dance UK, ISTD and Sampad.

Spectacular street-dance and breathtaking circus combine to bring Kipling’s classic tale crashing into the 21st Century. Fresh from its international tour, award winning Metta Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of Jungle Book will delight the whole family.

The National South Asian Youth Dance Competition

The performance will showcase shortlisted applicants for solo and group dances in a range of classical Indian styles; last year the line-up included BBC Young Dancer finalist and hugely talented dancer Vidya Patel. A panel of esteemed judges will select winners and runners up across four categories and the awards will be presented at the end of the performance. Navadal is part of U.Dance 2017 (see p33).

Dracula: The Bloody Truth

Landscapes is an intimate, magical theatre presentation for children set inside a beautiful white dome.

“You must have heard by now of the recent novel, ‘Dracula’ that was released three years ago in 1897 by that dreadful man Bram Stoker, yes? I gave that money grabber all my research notes, letters and diary entries... It wasn’t a fictional story at all, no! It was fact, true, real, I was there! I saw the madness, the supernatural. I saw the vampire.

Audiences are taken on a journey to four lovingly realised landscapes from the desert to the rainforest from under the sea to Antarctica. Using no words, Mimika combine ingeniously crafted puppets with an original musical score and stunning visual effects to create a theatre which wonderfully captures the atmosphere, rhythms, sounds and movements of the natural world. “Landscapes is by far one of the most mesmerising children’s theatre pieces I’ve ever seen” Calgary Sun, Canada

Something Then, Something Now

Dance companies and individual dance artists from across the region, including our home company Birmingham Royal Ballet, come together to celebrate the talent within their ranks.

UK born and raised dance artist Seeta Patel has been championing the Indian classical dance style of Bharatanatyam for many years under the guidance of Mavin Khoo.

Groove on Down the Road ZooNation

UK leading hip-hop dance company ZooNation, are proud to present this new adaptation of their critically-acclaimed production Groove on Down the Road. The company behind Into the Hoods, Some Like It Hip Hop and The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party give their unique twist to the classic story of The Wizard of Oz. Set in a fantastical urban world, ZooNation’s Groove On Down The Road tells the story of Dorothy and her adventures with Toto, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion on their journey to Oz. The audience join Dorothy, complete with ruby sneakers, and friends in this hip-hop dance production as they follow the yellow brick road in a quest to find happiness and family. This unique project will see ZooNation creatives working with a select group of local young people from Wolverhampton and Birmingham to recreate and re-imagine this well-loved story.

Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company: Inter_rupted

Out of nowhere, drummers march towards each other from street to street, their drumsticks twirl and their colourful faces sizing each other up for a confrontation of rhythm and light. The wild parade leads to the stage with a clash of drums. Light and fire fill the skies as the explosion of sound brings everyone together in this exciting spectacle.

In the past few years, Aditi Mangaldas’ creations have garnered her international attention as the key contemporary Kathak creator in India. With a cast of eight dancers and four musicians, Inter_rupted is a high octane new work based on disintegration, fragility, vulnerability, age and transience. It also follows the trajectory of modern Kathak, for which Aditi Mangaldas is becoming best known. Mangaldas has been working with the best collaborators in dance for Inter_rupted including: Morag Deyes (Artistic Director of Dancebase, Edinburgh) as mentor, who has known and promoted Aditi’s work for a long time, Farooq Chaudhry as dramaturge, the man who masterminded Akram Khan’s stellar rise, and lighting designer Fabiana Piccioli, winner of the Knight of the Illumination Award in 2013.

Die Fledermaus

Based on true events, Khovanshchina takes us back to 17th-century Russia where the country is in turmoil. The noble Khovansky, joins forces with the Old Believers, as they rebel against modern reform being imposed by the Tsar. As personal and political ambitions combine and clash with both constitutional and religious forces, the struggle for power will result in grave consequences.

Rosalinde is looking forward to a few days’ carefree time with her lover, while her husband is facing time in prison. Her maid asks to be excused in order to care for a sick aunt. In truth all four characters are planning to spend the evening at a magnificent masquerade ball given by the prince. As the characters are brought together in various guises, we set the scene for a hilarious story of mistaken identity full of splendour, posh frocks and masks.

A glimmer of hope takes the form of a great eagle that prisoners painstakingly nurse back to health, a symbol of Russia but also of freedom itself. Janácek š based both the music and the libretto on the recollections of Russian writer Dostoyevsky. On stage we’re following the story of a number of characters through an ensemble cast and chorus, but the true protagonist is the WNO Orchestra, conducted by WNO’s new Music Director Tomáš Hanus.

Tchaikovsky’s best loved opera, is based on the Alexander Pushkin novel of the same name. Simple and classic countryside settings are contrasted with beautiful ballroom scenes and rich costumes reflecting high society at the time. This poignant story showcases the battle between the yearnings of the heart and social convention, all through a score of wonderfully romantic choruses and evocative arias.

Following the sold-out and critical success of The Red Shoes and Sleeping Beauty, New Adventures return to Birmingham Hippodrome with one of their most popular and beloved productions, Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella – a thrilling and evocative love story, set in London during the Second World War, which forms part of the company’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Matthew Bourne’s interpretation of the classic fairy tale has, at its heart, a true war-time romance. A chance meeting results in a magical night for Cinderella and her dashing young RAF pilot, together just long enough to fall in love before being parted by the horrors of the Blitz.

We also have a public entrance on Thorp St. We are easy to find and have great connections to public transport and nearby car parks. The Arcadian Car Park (Bromsgrove St, B5 6NU) opposite our main entrance has disabled parking with access to street level. Check networkwestmidlands.com for details on public transport routes, or call Traveline on 0871 200 2233. Both New Street and Moor Street train stations are very close and well signposted. Many bus routes pass very nearby, and we are well-served by taxi ranks. Please note Temporary re-routing of traffic means that there is no access to Hill Street or Smallbrook Queensway via Ladywell Walk and Hurst Street. NB: For staff training, from time to time we may change our opening hours, and occasionally we monitor calls. Payment • We accept most major credit and debit cards. After payment, we’ll post tickets to your registered card address. • We also take cheques payable to ‘Birmingham Hippodrome’. • Unfortunately we don’t accept SOLT Theatre Tokens, but you can buy and redeem our own Birmingham Hippodrome Gift Vouchers. A note on charges • We’re an unsubsidised charity, so if you pay by card, cheque or redeem our Gift Vouchers, we add a 5% transaction charge. This covers administration costs and enables us to continue offering a dedicated booking service. • We won’t add this charge if you pay with cash in person for non-group bookings. • As a benefit of membership, we also waive the transaction charge for Birmingham Hippodrome Friends tickets when a Friends discount applies. • Most discounted groups and schools prices quoted already include a transaction charge. • Charges vary with other agents selling on our behalf. Our official agent is Ticketmaster, with other agencies taking allocations of tickets from time to time. • For purchases eight days or more before a performance, we’ll add a postage charge from £1. • We have several 0844 telephone numbers. Calls cost 4.5p per min plus your phone company’s access charge. • From time to time we reserve the right to waive fees for selected performances.

Children We want our productions to be enjoyed by everyone. And, as much as we love young children, they can sometimes be noisy or disruptive; they can also get bored or easily upset by special effects, and nobody wants that. Unless otherwise stated, we do not admit children under 3 to our regular performances. We advise 5+ for performances such as ballet, and other age guidance is occasionally offered (check when booking). Everyone admitted to the theatre needs to be in possession of a ticket, and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult at all times so we know they are safe. Pantomime is intended to entertain audiences of all ages with something for everyone. It includes lots of traditional laughs, slapstick fun, some scary moments and impressive effects, plus some cheeky innuendo which most audiences find goes over the heads of children. This production features a short 3D film with some ‘mild peril’. Parents should judge whether younger or more sensitive children would find this upsetting. Age guidance 5+, no under 3s admitted, and no babes in arms. Access • Assisted Performances: for dates of relaxed, audiodescribed, captioned or signed performances, please see the foot of show pages or refer to the diary on pages 56/57. Should you require a seat close to entrances, please ask when booking. Please let us know when booking if you need any help. • Deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing: if you’d like a receiver, just ask at our cloakroom. Signed performances, with seats close to the signer, are arranged. • Impaired mobility: Automatic doors and lifts are available for wheelchair users and we have wheelchair positions both in our main auditorium and Patrick Centre studio. We have accessible unisex and ambulant disabled toilets on all levels, plus low-level counter service. Circle Restaurant is also fully accessible. A note on food and drink We run all our catering services in-house, so when you eat or drink with us you are helping assist our artistic aims as an unsubsidised charitable trust. We kindly request that only food and drink purchased from us is consumed on the premises (see pages inside cover for some tasty options).
