A Stage for the Best in the World

Spring 2015 I 0844 338 5000 I birminghamhippodrome.com

WELCOME I hope you will find this forthcoming programme has a feel of familiarity in the very best sense. We’re very pleased to have a season of terrific shows that are new productions of classic titles, blockbuster films reimagined into the best live theatre and bestselling books presented on stage with compelling theatricality. I’d like to highlight Oklahoma! as it is produced by a consortium of twenty of the foremost regional theatres (including the Hippodrome), who have come together to create new musical theatre. “Utter bliss” said the Daily Telegraph on opening night and I hope you will agree! It wears its age lightly and has truly earned the title “classic”. Dance is as always to the fore with wonderful productions of the highest artistry from Birmingham Royal Ballet, alongside the campest boys in town, The Trocks, with their hugely affectionate and hilarious pastiche – ballet as you may never have seen it before! Universally acknowledged as one of the world’s greatest dancers, Sylvie Guillem has only ever performed at Birmingham Hippodrome in the UK outside London. We are therefore honoured and delighted that as part of her farewell year of performances she has chosen the Hippodrome as the venue to perform in for the very last time in the UK.

The King Dances supported (2015) by Jennifer Rowe and Birmingham Royal Ballet’s New Work Syndicate (2014-15) and Director’s Appeal (2014-15)

Wed 17 - Sat 20 Jun Marking Director David Bintley’s 20th year with Birmingham Royal Ballet, this programme contrasts his acclaimed Carmina burana from 1995 with his latest work, The King Dances. In 1653 the 14-year-old Louis XIV of France danced the role of Apollo the sun god in Le Ballet de la nuit, and earned himself forever the soubriquet the Sun King. In The King Dances, David Bintley re-imagines the very beginnings of ballet, when men were quite literally, the kings of dance. Carmina burana, the first ballet Bintley created for the Company as Director, an encounter with the mind-blowing Goddess Fortuna deals three seminarians a major lesson in the fickle nature of fate. Carmina burana is a thrilling, large-scale production, danced to Carl Orff’s dramatic and emotionally charged choral music, for which the Royal Ballet Sinfonia are joined by Birmingham’s Ex Cathedra. 8

Music Léo Delibes Choreography David Bintley Designs Sue Blane Lighting Mark Jonathan

Wed 24 - Sat 27 Jun A humorous trip through time to learn valuable lessons in love. Count Guiccioli’s infidelities cause marital strife between him and his wife and threaten both their anniversary celebration and the burgeoning love between Amynta and Sylvia, their servants. It is left to the God of Love, Eros (in disguise as a gardener), to reconcile their differences as he takes them, and us, back to the age of mythical Rome in order to teach them all a lesson about Love. David Bintley’s time-hopping comedy features music by Léo Delibes, the composer of Coppélia (see p7), and a colourful cast of Gods and Goddesses, slave girls and pirates. Tchaikovsky wrote of Delibes’ score, that his own music for Swan Lake was ‘poor stuff’ in comparison.

Hailed as one of the greatest dancers of her generation, Sylvie Guillem performs for the final time in the UK here at Birmingham Hippodrome. Her last two visits here in 2012 and 2014, both part of International Dance Festival Birmingham, have been acclaimed as some of the finest dance performances ever seen. Guillem began training at the Paris Opera Ballet School in 1977, and in 1981 joined the company’s corps de ballet, being promoted to the rank of ‘Etoile’ by Rudolf Nureyev at the age of 19. As a Principal Guest Artist at the Royal Ballet and Tokyo Ballet, Guillem has played some iconic roles in ballets by Kenneth MacMillan, Maurice Béjart, Frederick Ashton, William Forsythe and Mats Ek. She has also performed with the world’s most famous companies including the Mariinsky, American Ballet Theatre and La Scala, Milan. Since 2006 she has been an Associate Artist at Sadler’s Wells, and has forged a second, hugely successful career as a dancer in new and contemporary works.

For this very special programme titled Life in Progress, she will dance two new works including a solo with live musicians on stage, choreographed by Sacred Monsters choreographer Akram Khan. The second will be a pas de deux with Italian dancer Emanuela Montanari from La Scala, choreographed by Russell Maliphant who created the award-winning PUSH. This last opportunity to see her dance on stage in the UK will also include Mats Ek’s touching and poignant Bye (which was made especially for her and performed as part of the 6000 miles away programme), and William Forsythe’s Duo performed by Brigel Gjoka and Riley Watts. A Sadler’s Wells Production, co-produced with Les Nuits de Fourvière and Sylvie Guillem.

Hurtling through the classical ballet repertoire with their inimitable blend of skill, grace and with a wit as sharp as scissors en pointe, The Trocks have been a global phenomenon since they formed in the late-late shows in Off-Off Broadway lofts in New York, 1974. Dancers, including Ida Nevasyneva and Olga Supphozova, present two programmes which effortlessly display their startling technical prowess and their no less extraordinary make-up skills. Enjoy show-stopping Swan Lake (Act II), Merce Cunningham-inspired Patterns in Space, Go For Barocco, a satire on Balanchine’s choreography and the UK premiere of Don Quixote. As the darlings of the ballet world, The Trocks combine a genuine love of ballet with parody and preening in their laugh-a-minute shows that will delight both The Trocks initiated and ballet novices.

Bellini’s English Civil War drama is the most purely entertaining of all bel canto operas. There are vocal fireworks aplenty. But they are never at the cost of character, story and emotional depth. I puritani contains a cavalcade of great opera moments. The cast includes Barry Banks, one of today’s great tenors and if you haven’t joined WNO for the bel canto series so far, now is the time. Out of time, out of mind

Sweeney Todd fills a void with a bloody quest for vengeance. Those who enter his shop get more than a close shave. The unlucky ones ending up in Mrs Lovett’s rather unsavoury pies, proving you are what you eat.

Full of ravishing music and poignant drama, Orlando is one of Handel’s greatest works and the perfect place to begin a love affair with his operas. Handel explores the destructive side of love as our hero descends into madness when he is rejected by Princess Angelica. Harry Fehr’s acclaimed staging stylishly updates this tale of inner turmoil to the outset of the Second World War. WNO have assembled a world-class cast of Handel performers for this production. The cast, conducted by acclaimed Baroque interpreter Rinaldo Alessandrini, includes international counter-tenor Lawrence Zazzo in the title role. Rebecca Evans, one of the country’s finest sopranos, sings the role of Angelica. Sung in Italian with surtitles in English.

FREE PRE-PERFORMANCE TALK 5.45pm

Sondheim’s masterpiece is by turns hugely funny, terrifying and deeply sad. It is complex but always engaging. See Sweeney Todd and you’ll find that it buries itself in your consciousness and refuses to leave. With all the emotional impact of the greatest operas, it deserves to be performed by the forces of WNO’s Chorus and Orchestra. Sung in English with no surtitles. Amplification will be used in line with music theatre practice. Originally produced on Broadway by Richard Barr, Charles Woodward, Robert Fryer, Mary Lea Johnson, Martin Richards in association witih Dean and Judy Manos Presented by arrangement with JOSEF WEINBERGER LIMITED on behalf of MUSIC THEATRE INTERNATIONAL of New York FREE PRE-PERFORMANCE TALK Thu 19 Nov 5.45pm

There’s no better sign that Christmas approaches than the arrival of BRB’s evergreen production of The Nutcracker. Brimming with festive energy, this ballet charms young and old alike. When a young girl sneaks downstairs on Christmas eve to play with her new nutcracker doll, she is swept up in a fantastic journey, filled with toy soldiers, sugar plum fairies, and of course her handsome prince. This world-famous production by Sir Peter Wright, with exquisite designs by John Macfarlane, is acclaimed as the best in Britain.
