“Birmingham Hippodrome is one of our undoubted jewels - a stand out tourist attraction” Hippodrome perception survey

“I’ve been visiting this venue for over 23 years. One of the best theatres in the country in my opinion. First class productions, great scripts, casts, scenery and props. I highly recommend this venue!” Trip Advisor review

Annual Review Midway through our 2017-18 year we added some professional gallery hanging fixtures to our foyer corridors. We exhibited beautiful archive posters, some dating before World War One, when we were known principally as a ‘variety house and music hall’. Today that word ‘variety’ is something we still hold dear, even now as ‘lyric theatre’ rapidly becoming a wider ‘performing arts centre’ where everyone is welcome. In fact our commitment to variety, appealing to such a wide range of audiences, is still for me one of the most magical and satisfying aspects of being part of Birmingham Hippodrome’s success. In 2017/18 we demonstrated variety in spades across a record 572 performances for over 570,000 people thanks for coming! Half the time, our historic main stage was packed with popular West End and Broadway successes from the monumental Billy Elliot and Miss Saigon, to reworked classics such as Funny Girl and Sunset Boulevard. And alongside yet another barn-storming Pantomime, headed by Beverley Knight, we welcomed many sublime moments from our friends at Birmingham Royal Ballet and Welsh National Opera. Our commitment to dance delivered two visits from Sir Matthew Bourne, the return of Ballet British Columbia and Sidi Larbi, plus first visits from Carlos Acosta’s new company and from one of our new Associate Companies, Motionhouse. But further widening our appeal, and attracting big numbers of new first-time bookers, we were honoured to host the enormous U-Dance Festival, the popular TEDxBrum (and TEDxYouth) conference, Spirit of India, and leading Pakistani singer Atif Aslam.

We injected a new lease of life into our rebranded Patrick Studio (now complemented by our enhanced Thorp Street Atrium), where over 17,000 people enjoyed dance, cabaret, some astonishing Hip-Hop, spoken word events, dinners and conferences. Family shows were also added to the menu and for the first time we presented a festive offering in this underacknowledged space from the Tall Stories company, who will be returning in December 2018. One of the most encouraging things for me is that many more people are coming into contact with the Hippodrome beyond the venue itself. On our doorstep here in the city’s diverse Southside neighbourhood, Chinese New Year has grown considerably with our technical and event management. B-Side, our own Hip-Hop celebration, now has international appeal delivering flair, talent and attitude; and a blisteringly hot Summer in Southside festival brought the countryside to our pavements for some memorable family fun. For the third time, we produced key elements of the Birmingham Weekender, working with Culture Central and other partners as acknowledged experts in city-wide, collaborative festival delivery, culminating in the almighty fireworks of Clash of Drums. Our Hippodrome Education Network has expanded, along with more Curtain Raisers, free or low-cost foyer activity for families, and more Relaxed Performances all largely enabled by our many generous donors and sponsors. Earnings from conferences (including Arts Council England’s largest ever briefing event) and from our award-winning catering underpin our sustainability and independence.

I am so grateful for the hard work and support of the entire Hippodrome team - staff, Trustees and Board Members, volunteers and our many producer and artistic partners. But most of all I want to thank our audiences for believing in us, joining us on our transformational journey, and for ensuring that variety remains at the core of what we represent.

Beverley Knight, Fairy Godmother in Cinderella

“I had such a wonderful experience performing at Birmingham Hippodrome in the pantomime Cinderella last Christmas. To have a space like the Hippodrome slap bang in the middle of Brum is just brilliant, I absolutely loved every night I was on that stage. Even though it’s a gorgeous building, it doesn’t feel overbearing. It really feels like anybody, from any background, can go to Birmingham Hippodrome, and that’s really important for theatre. “For me it was a home crowd and the warm reception I got was just so lovely. It was just amazing to see that recognition from my own folk, and the appreciation they had for the show right from the very first note was amazing. “The reputation of the staff at Birmingham Hippodrome really precedes them. I’ve worked in a lot of different theatres around the country, but Birmingham Hippodrome is one of the warmest welcomes you will find anywhere.”

Rosie Kay, Choreographer and Hippodrome Associate Company (Rosie Kay Dance Company) “Over the past year, the relationship with the Hippodrome has deepened for me as an artist and as a company. We created Modern Warrior for Birmingham Weekender, and then with support from the Chinese Community Centre and the Hippodrome we developed the piece and presented it as part of Chinese New Year, which was really thrilling. Now we are looking forward to bringing MK ULTRA to the Patrick Studio, as well as developing our award-winning work, 5 SOLDIERS with Hippodrome support and mentoring. “Working on the Birmingham Commonwealth Games Handover with Birmingham Hippodrome was truly incredible. What we had to plan, organise and rehearse in such little time was quite a feat, we were ecstatic afterwards, especially as we’d pulled off the longest ever single shot live broadcast ever. Our relationship with the Hippodrome shows that local companies can achieve great things and be seen in a larger and more ambitious way. The Hippodrome is a world-class stage in the heart of the city and I’m thrilled and proud to call ourselves an Associate Company.”

Melissa Menns, Head Chef, Birmingham Hippodrome “We want to ensure everyone has the best possible experience here, whether that’s in our Circle Restaurant, at a hospitality event or something a bit special like a Champagne dinner! It’s very important to me that we offer something different than people might expect from a theatre restaurant and make sure they get a proper dining experience. The quality of the food and seasonality of products we offer is crucial, and it’s fun to play around with themed menus for the amazing variety of shows we have. “For me a memorable Hippodrome moment was running the hospitality and catering for a really busy night here when we had a gala dinner and a number of other events for The Red Shoes. Everyone stepped up and we pulled off two back-to-back galas with no hitches! Not long after that I got the job of Head Chef so that was a proud moment for me. As a ballet fan it’s also great to work on shows like that. “Recently we won the Sports and Leisure Catering award for Heritage and Arts Establishment of the Year. This involved the judges coming to sample my food so it was amazing to win. I’m, truly passionate about food, and it’s great to share that with all the thousands of Hippodrome visitors.”

Since the first festival, it has just grown and grown and it’s great to continue to welcome everyone to Birmingham for a great celebration of the culture.” B-SIDE Hip-Hop festival partner 13

Gary Topp, CEO Culture Central “Birmingham Hippodrome has been key in the development of Culture Central and is an advocate for the new sector leadership voice in the city. As a founder member the Hippodrome plays a crucial part in all of our programmes, especially our engagement with them as producers and supporters of the Weekender Festival and Commonwealth Games handover event. It was great to work with such enthusiastic and talented colleagues who were able to see both the detail of the delivery and the bigger strategic intent. “As one of the main anchor institutions in the city, their business model mixes strong commerciality with charity purpose, community engagement and a progressive approach to contemporary delivery. It is a particularly powerful model for cultural development in the city at this point. “The Hippodrome is clearly on a very important transition journey at the moment from being a very well regarded and successful commercial receiving house, to being a cultural production hub. By opening up the building and making city-wide partnerships, they are really contributing to a positive journey of change.”

Thank you for making it all appear so effortless. I know it wasn’t.” Sir Nick Serota, Chair Arts Council England 15

Marc and Michelle Messer, Birmingham Hippodrome Patrons “We have always liked the theatre and wanted to support a local charity that impacted our local area in such a positive manner. So it was very rewarding to come and see the Relaxed Performance of the pantomime and see how our donations, along with all those of other Friends and Patrons, make a difference to children’s lives. For just one day they could leave their illnesses and worries at the door and enjoy themselves. I will admit it did bring a tear to my eye - we take for granted what is so far away for some people, but you make it reachable during that performance. “The new fundraising Artistic Circle Lunches are a brilliant thing, it’s great to meet Directors who explain the future vision for the theatre and how our continued support is so important in making this happen. Although our own donation isn’t massive, combined with everyone else we CAN make a difference. In fact we all can as surplus from ticket sales, bars, the Circle Restaurant, and events like Gala Evenings, helps fund the incredible Hippodrome Projects.”

“It was fantastic, it really was! I was expecting it to be good, but it was far better than I could have hoped for. Absolutely awesome. I have seen plenty of good concerts (paid for) and this was up there with the very best of them and surpassed the vast majority. All who arranged this as a ‘free event’ should be commended. Nice one Birmingham Hippodrome and Birmingham Weekender!!!” Audience member
