FLEXIBLE SPACES CENTRAL LOCATION COMPETITIVE PRICES FIRST-RATE, BESPOKE, PERSONALISED SERVICE EXPERIENCED EVENTS, TECHNICAL AND FRONT OF HOUSE TEAMS

VENUE HIRE IN THE HEART OF BIRMINGHAM

Available to hire from one hour upwards, our facilities include a 154 seater, acoustically enhanced hall, a range of lecture theatres, and over sixty other practice, rehearsal, meeting rooms and break out spaces. We offer high quality equipment and instruments, technical support, excellent catering and in-house musicians making Birmingham Conservatoire an ideal choice for your event.

Welcome Welcome to our Autumn Concert Diary. As we count down towards our arrival at the new Conservatoire in less than a year’s time, things are undoubtedly different this year. But, although we have lost our beloved Adrian Boult Hall, we have taken this as an opportunity to get ‘out and about’ in the city and we will be performing at Symphony Hall, Town Hall, the cathedrals of St Philip’s and St Chad’s, the CBSO Centre and St Paul’s Church in the Jewellery Quarter to name but a few. At the Conservatoire itself we continue to offer world renowned artists at less than half the price you can hear them anywhere else! Singers are particularly well represented this autumn with concerts and masterclasses from charismatic soprano Danielle de Niese and distinguished tenor Christoph Prégardien (will you EVER get the chance to hear such artists at such close quarters again?) And our exciting Max Reger Festival includes recitals by organist Thomas Trotter and cellist Johannes Goritzki, who will be partnered by our own Head of Keyboard Studies, John Thwaites.

CONCERTS RECITALS REHEARSALS WORKSHOPS

So, as always, much to discover, learn and enjoy this autumn at the Conservatoire and once again. I urge you to ‘comb through’ this diary’s pages very carefully so that you don’t miss out! Julian Lloyd Webber Principal, Birmingham Conservatoire

Music is often referred to as a universal language. How much of a language and how universal it is remains subject to investigation. In this paper David Baltuch (Director, Académie de Farciennes, Belgium, and recent PhD graduate of the Conservatoire) will deal with music as performed.

Since graduating she has been employed by Diva Opera, Buxton Festival Opera, Kentish Opera and Graham Vick’s Birmingham Opera Company.

1.05pm Recital Hall Free admission

Jing Yi Zhu piano

3.30pm New Lecture Theatre £4

Suzie Purkis began her vocal training at Birmingham Conservatoire where she won a scholarship and many prizes. After completing her studies there she was awarded a Silver Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians for Excellence in Performance.

Operatic roles and scenes performed include Juno (Semele), Ottavia (L’incoronazione di Poppea), Carmen (Carmen), Mother (Amahl and the Night Visitors). Her performance of Michael Wolters’s short opera, The Voyage, was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. 'Purkis’ poised delivery conveying a wonderfully lyrical sense of line through wide-spanning intervals.' Christopher Morley, Birmingham Post

In the first part, Dr Baltuch will summarise his doctoral dissertation, analysing practitioners’ testimonies about orchestral conducting. In the second part, he will address the issue of musical meaning as it appears, notably, through the history of musical performance. Finally, he will play and discuss part of Mahler’s Second Symphony, conducted respectively by Bernstein and Boulez, in the quest of possible variations of meaning induced by each interpretation. How universally understood these variations are could be the subject of the final discussion with the audience.

This concert opens with George Enescu's Concert Piece. Although a violinist, he shows a sincere understanding of the viola, taking the listener through a variety of emotions and sound colours. Followed by Brahms's romantic F minor Sonata and concluded by the wonderfully diverse and robust Solo Sonata by Paul Hindemith, this programme promises an exciting mixture of core repertoire for the viola, performed by Elsabé Raath, who is studying Conservatoire's flagship Professional Performance programme.

SOLO SUITES AND CHAMBER MUSIC

"Sir: I am seated in the smallest room in the house. Your review is before me. Shortly it will be behind me." Max Reger, in response to a critic.

Bavarian-born composer, pianist and organist, Max Reger died one hundred years ago at the age of only 43 in Leipzig, the city at the centre of his professional life. His Leipzig Conservatoire class included Jaroslav Kvapil, George Szell and Rudolf Serkin. Reger's output of choral, keyboard and chamber music is enormous and the exuberant chromaticism of his mature style, complemented with polyphonic complexity but framed in the classical models of the central Austro-German tradition make his music amongst the finest of the late flowerings of romanticism whilst also forming a bridge to the Second Viennese School.

The importance of America in the life and music of Frederick Delius (1862–1934) has been widely recognised. Delius spent a formative year in Florida as young man in 1884–5, managing a citrus plantation leased by his father. Many scholars have since pointed to the impact of African-American music upon his later compositional development. In this talk Professor Grimley (Fellow and Tutor in Music at Merton College, Oxford) will reassess the quality and significance of such influence in the context of the deeply racialised landscapes of the American south, and ask what it might mean for a more critically engaged response to Delius’s work.

TUE 1 NOV PUBLIC RESEARCH SEMINAR

PROFESSOR RONALD WOODLEY (PIANO) AND JAMES GEER (TENOR) LECTURE-RECITAL: EXPLORING SCHUMANN’S DICHTERLIEBE ON THE WIECK PIANO 3.30pm New Lecture Theatre £4 Earlier this year the Conservatoire was privileged to acquire on loan a remarkable piano, dating from the mid-19th century and made by Clara Schumann’s cousin, Wilhelm Wieck, in Dresden. The instrument, still in a good state of preservation, provides a wonderful opportunity to investigate how the performance of lieder from this period might be influenced by the characteristics of sound, articulation and colour of this kind of piano, along with other documentary evidence of historical keyboard and vocal performance practice. Ronald Woodley, Professor in the Conservatoire’s Research Department, with his long-standing duo partner, the tenor James Geer, explore these issues through extracts from Robert Schumann’s song cycle Dichterliebe, in the company of this unique instrument, which may have belonged to Clara Schumann herself.

PUBLIC RESEARCH SEMINAR

SARAH PRICE: MUSIC, PEOPLE AND PLACE: UNDERSTANDING ATTITUDES TOWARDS ART AND EDUCATION IN CLASSICAL MUSIC AUDIENCES TODAY 3.30pm New Lecture Theatre £4 Why do people attend classical music concerts? This question has puzzled academic and commercial researchers for many years. With classical music organisations across the country struggling to attract the next generation of audiences, understanding how attenders decide to go to a concert is of urgent concern. In this paper, Sarah Price (AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award Student at the University of Sheffield and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra) presents findings from her doctoral research with audiences at the CBSO. This study was concerned with how ideas of ‘light’ and ‘serious’ classical music influence concert attendance, and how arts organisations negotiate entertaining and educating their audiences. Birmingham Conservatoire Association is a voluntary organisation supporting the work of Conservatoire students. Our international membership consists of alumni, past and present members of staff, parents, friends who support our objectives and distinguished Honorary Members including Sir Simon Rattle. As an independent Registered Charity, our work includes giving financial support to students and the CBSO Learning and Participation Programme, the production of Fanfare magazine in conjunction with the Conservatoire, hosting the annual Undergraduate Welcome and assisting with Alumni and Staff Reunions. Membership is open to anyone wishing to support our work for the students, who increasingly need your help in these days of global financial hardship.
