Jersey Boys

T.S Spivet

Having previously brought jazz, country ’n’ western and the blues to the screen, Eastwood now takes on 1960s pop. Distinguished by the tingling falsetto of Frankie Valli (Lloyd Young, reprising his Broadway role), The Four Seasons had a string of international hits. This vibrant biopic is based squarely on the hit stage musical, with Christopher Walken playing the mobster who tries to muscle in on the act’s success.

When ten-year-old science prodigy T. S. Spivet wins an award from the Smithsonian for his perpetual motion machine, he leaves his eccentric Montana family behind and absconds to Washington aboard a freight train. His adventures en route, and his celebrity status once there, shed alternately comical, touching and revealing light on human frailties. Writer-director Jeunet (MICMACS, AMELIE) invests this delightful film with his hallmark idiosyncrasies and visual panache.

Director: Clint Eastwood. Starring: John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Christopher Walken. USA 2014. 134 mins. Cert 15

IDirector: Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Starring: Kyle Catlett, Helena Bonham Carter, Judy Davis. France/Canada 2013. 105 mins. 2014 109 mins Cert 12A

Abundant adventures ensue with many of the original cast back on board, plus new character Valka (Blanchett), and Kit Harington (POMPEII, Game of Thrones) as a dragon trapper. It’s a blast for kids and parents alike. Director: Dean DeBlois. Voices: Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler. USA 2014. 102 mins. Cert PG

Mrs brown’s boys-d movie

begin again

When Moore Street market-trader Agnes Brown finds her livelihood under threat from a ruthless developer, she and her family embark on a campaign to save her stall, aided as only the Browns will be by a motley troop of blind trainee Ninjas, an alcoholic solicitor, and a barrister with Tourettes Syndrome.

In this uplifting tale from the director of ONCE, Ruffalo is Dan, a New York recordlabel boss who is flailing in both his personal and professional life, and Knightley plays Greta, a songwriter whose career has derailed since her partner hit the big time. When Dan hears her performance at an open-mic night, he suspects that she might just be the real deal. Resisting predictable plot turns, Carney keeps us guessing the trajectory of our two lost souls in this crowdpleaser.

Million ways to die in the west

fri 11 July - Thu 17 July Paranoid anti-hero Albert (MacFarlane) is completely out of place in the 1880s Wild West. But when the mysterious, glamorous Anna (Theron) drifts into town, the pair fall in love – even though she’s betrothed to a notorious outlaw (Neeson) – and their comic misadventures result in a drug-fuelled shoot-out. Based on the novel by multitalented writer-director Seth MacFarlane (TED, Family Guy), this is easily the funniest comedy western since Mel Brooks’ BLAZING SADDLES. Director: Seth MacFarlane. Starring: Seth MacFarlane, Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson. USA 2014. 116 mins. Cert 15

fri 25 July - Thu 31 July 2D & 3D

fri 18 July - Wed 30 July

This sequel to 2011’s game-changing RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES finds the majestic Caesar (reprised by Andy Serkis) leading his fellow highly evolved simians against a band of survivors of a virus that all but wiped out humankind 15 years earlier. Following her divorce, their mother Gail (Jessica Hynes) moves the family to the quiet and sleepy village of Chuffington-onSea, where Pudsey discovers that there’s an evil plot afoot. Can Pudsey foil the evil plans and save the village?
