Academic Departments

 Year 7 explored various mediums on the theme of ‘The Seaside’. 

 

 

They also studied Impressionism and created their own pieces from photographs from around the Wirral Year 8 created 3-D forms inspired by observational studies of insects. They have recently investigated Cubism and created pieces based on musical instruments. Year 9 looked at graphic art and produced magazine covers based on their personal interests and created abstract oil pastel pieces based on observational drawings of ‘fastenings’ Year 10 visited the National Boat Museum in Ellesmere Port to gather information to work on a mechanical form theme. They finished the year producing a project based on the work of Joseph Cornell Year 11 completed their Personal Identity project in January and then focused on the 10 hour exam Lower 6th visited The Tate and the Walker galleries in Liverpool to see a variety of work to inspire their own creations. They also visited the Lady Lever Gallery later in the year Parents were invited to the art department on the 20th of May to see an exhibition of all the exam groups work. On the 17th of June a joint exhibition of art and technology students work was mounted in the Bushell Hall which was open to the general public.

Classics:  As part of their Beyond the Curriculum programme, our Year 7

students enjoyed an Ancient Roman cookery lesson. They prepared a menu consisting of asparagus frittata, roasted fish with broccoli and couscous, and rustic bread. When the dishes were ready, the chefs ate their banquet in Roman attire!  A Latin fun day was held on Tuesday, 15th October at Deva (Roman Chester) for our boys and girls in Year 7. During their visit to the Grosvenor Museum, students had the chance to handle real Roman artefacts from the Roman period found at Chester. They also took part in an archaeological discovery and a hands-on session at the Dewa Experience. The day finished with a guided tour around the Roman Walls and the amphitheatre.  On Monday, 11th November, Year 9 Classical Greek students and those studying Latin in Year 8 took part in a workshop on Greek and Roman civilisation. Not only did they have the experience of discovering artefacts on the ground as archaeologists, but they also dressed up as hoplites and tried their skills as monster-slayers!  Following previous visits to Rome and Pompeii in October 2011 and to Greece during half-term in Michaelmas Term 2012, the Classics Department organised another visit to Italy during Easter 2014. The eleven students and two members of staff who made up the party commenced their visit in Rome, exploring not only the major Classical sites, but also St Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museum. They then transferred to Sorrento, via the abbey at Monte Cassino. Excursions were made from Sorrento to Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius and Herculaneum, and also to the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.

Classics (cont…):  As part of our Outreach programme, the Classics Department has

offered a Latin course to G&T Year 5 students from local Primary Schools. The course has been very popular and has run both in the Autumn and the Summer Terms. We have followed Minimus, a unique Latin course for younger children, based on a real family who lived at Vindolanda in 100AD. Some of our aims are to foster an enjoyment of academic learning and independent research, as well as to provide an insight into the structure of English and to lay a foundation for the study of Modern Foreign Languages.  On 12th March, nine students from across the School took part in the Manchester Classical Association’s Ancient Greek and Latin reading Competition. In the beginners’ section, four Year 8 students acted out a dramatic piece from the Cambridge Latin Course. In the GCSE division, two competitors read a piece from Homer’s Odyssey, Book 21; whereas our Latin candidate tackled a few verses from Virgil’s Aeneid XII. Sián Round from the L6 read a dramatic monologue from Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus. Finally, Sam Berkson, studying A2 Latin, came away with a commendation on his reading of Cicero’s In Verrem. Design and Technology:  The Design and Technology mounted a display of GCSE, AS and

 

A2 level coursework in an exhibition held jointly with the Art department in the Bushell Hall. The Hall was transformed into a gallery space for a week and pupils, parents and staff were given the opportunity to view the range of art and products that had been created. The GCSE Product Design pupils were able to produce an array of products ranging from a three level fish tank to a wooden bike frame. This year we had a number of Year 11 pupils apply for the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship. Pupils have to fill in a detailed application form, sit a two hour aptitude test, and then attend an interview day at a top University. Three pupils reached the interview shortlist (Ben Corlett, Joshua Gibson and Edward George). The panel’s decision will be announced by the end of July. AS Product Design pupils had to design an i-Pod dock for a local company. This year our 4 A2 students produced very complex projects. Oliver Gilding designed a storage device for his hockey kit which was for a local company called Barrington Sports. Rebecca Davies designed a retro gaming inspired coffee table. It took the form of a set of Tetris blocks with acrylic uprights to create a feeling of floating surfaces. Ben Pearson used his love of design to come up with a wine storage unit that was influenced in aesthetic appearance by the Rietveldt chair. Rob Chapman designed a USB powered desk lamp that fitted in with the style of several modern design houses. Rob and Ben are both aspiring to study Product Design at University. AS systems projects this year included an ultrasonic distance calibration unit, a remote servo operated camera tripod attachment, an electronic metronome with text display, a guitar tuner aimed at children with a text display, an electronic reaction game and a PC tower automatic auxiliary cooling system.

Extra-curricular Combined Cadet Force:  The CCF continue to operate jointly with Upton Hall School FCJ.  This year started and ended with Contingent Annual Camps.

Summer 2013 found us taking salt in a heatwave at Warcop in Cumbria, and similarly, Summer 2014 will see us at Warcop at the same time as The Tour de France gets underway a few miles south. RAF cadets attended annual camp at RAF Cranwell. As well as visiting College Hall, the spitritual home of the RAF, cadets enjoyed the 25m range, clay pigeon shooting, laser encounters, The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the Dambusters Museum, and an afternoon out in Lincoln. The highlight of the visit was the sight of the BBMF Lancaster undergoing engine trials, and sitting in Guy Gibson’s desk at RAF Scampton. The RAF fleet of Tutors are getting back into action, but as yet the programme of Air Experience Flying is patchy. Duke of Edinburgh Award:  The Duke of Edinburgh Award is not just about expeditions. Most of the 

activity goes on throughout the year, as participants participate in their other chosen activities. Many activities take place outside the compulsory school programme enabling students to complete their Physical Activity, Volunteering and Skills sections. Many are also members of clubs and societies in the local area which facilitate this process. The range of options in all three sections is almost limitless and Birkenhead School pupils typically cover their requirements by playing in the School netball, hockey or rugby teams, although one Gold participant is a member of a local trampoline club. Some fulfil their volunteering commitments by listening to children read in Prep or by working in local charity shops. Those who play musical instruments have a ready-made skill to pursue although there many other possibilities. Those doing Gold have the additional challenge of the Residential Project, which requires them to go away from home for five days, to participate in a shared activity with people they are not accustomed to working with. The expeditions are three days for Silver and four days for Gold. First there is the training, consisting of three days over the course of the Michaelmas and Lent terms. This programme is followed by the practice expeditions at Easter, which took place, as usual this year, in the northern and southern parts of the Snowdonia National Park. The Silver qualifying expeditions returned to the Yorkshire Dales, whilst the two Gold qualifying teams visited the Peak District. This was a new area for us and the inspiration came as a direct result of a request from a Gold participant to visit pastures new. Participants have until their 25th birthday to complete the Award, with two undergraduate Old Birkonians finally completing their Gold awards shortly prior to graduation. 36 students signed up for Silver in September and 16 for Gold. In reality, some never complete their Award, but the benefits and experience that they gain from the sections that they do finish can be considerable.

Quizzes:  Sam Berkson, Anas Ahmed, Ben Appleby and Finlay Gordon took part

Scouts:  20th Birkenhead have taken part in a range of competitions. These have

included the Geoffrey Beavan, Lord Derby and Equinox Challenge. The major high points were in the Birkenhead District Challenge Hike, where the combination of accurate navigation and good Scouting skills led to a Second place finish, the Gadget-scale Pioneering where an expandable kitchen dresser and wash stand earned first place, and the Fishing, where Amber Matthews defended her title successfully. Un the first ever North West Shelter Box Scavenger Hunt, the team of Amber and Bradley Matthews and Clara Hernan-Gomez found various clues about the hidden details of Liverpool as well as solving other mental physical challenges. Unicycle Club:  Unicycle Club has seen good numbers of pupils involved this year.

Pupils learn the basic skills needed to ride with just one wheel, and then we have some fun, playing unicycle hockey, basketball and even a spot of medieval unicycle jousting!  We have also attended various weekend events such as the Santa Dash in Liverpool, the Ride the Lights event in Blackpool and most recently the Wirral Bikeathon (we even made it on to the front page of the Wirral news!) This year we say farewell to Oliver George who has been a committed member of the club for a number of years. He will, however, be taking his Unicycle with him to Bristol University, where he hopes to join the UK Unicycle Hockey league.
