NANTUCKET

Frozen in Time

FEBRUARY 20, 2015, NANTUCKET’S FISHERMAN’S BEACH. PHOTO BY JONATHAN NIMERFROH

Nantucket’s frozen wave in the shot seen around the world I know most of us in Massachusetts do not want to think about the history making winter of 2015, but the Bird’s Eye View feels compelled to share a right place, right shot taken by Nantucket photographer and surfer Jonathan Nimerfroh. “I was making my daily surf check,” says Nimerfroh, “and I could see the horizon looked strange. When I got to the top of the dunes I saw that about 300 yards away from the shoreline the ocean was starting to freeze. The high temp that day was around 19 degrees. The wind was howling from the southwest which would typically make rough or choppy conditions but since the surface of the sea was frozen slush the wind did not change the shape. What resulted was perfect, dreamy, slush waves. The fishermen and surfers I know say this is a first and probably the result of it being the coldest winter we’ve had in 81 years.” To see more of Nimerfroh’s frozen wave shots along with his other work check out jdnphotography.com 26

James Bond Luxury without the Drama

A true story…you and a few friends are sunbathing on a raft floating aimlessly in crystal clear water under a cloudless blue sky and someone casually mentions, “All that’s missing is a glass of champagne.” Minutes later a small inflatable floats towards you with glasses and a bottle of Veuve Clicquot. Welcome to life on board the luxury yacht Rhino, a 154-foot, five stateroom paradise that will have you looking around for Robin Leach. Veuve delivered via an inflatable palm tree. BOSTON

A Boston tradition since 1877 Vibrant and hip Boston also keeps a firm hold on the city’s rich history and we see that combination this spring with a number of fun events in Cape Air’s hub city. Make an overnight to Boston part of your spring escape and head for the historic Boston Public Garden for a ride in the swan boats, in the nation’s first public botanical garden. This is old fashioned lazing. Bring a picnic and take in some of the extraordinary floral displays. Park entrance is free and a swan boat ride scores high on the affordable list at $3.50 for adults and $2 for kids. swanboats.com 52

One of the newer Boston traditions is the 12th Annual Party in the Park – heaven for those of us who LOVE hats. Keep Downton spirit alive and don your fanciest hat at this elegant event happening May 13th alongside historic Jamaica Pond. The fundraiser for the city’s parks attracts some 700 women and a few brave gents. In addition to the millenary show there is a three-course catered lunch and few other special surprises. like the town’s slogan proudly proclaims, Like Nowhere Else, Provincetown’s homage to ‘spring has sprung’ is the pounding pulsating rhythms signaling the first Tea Dance of the season. Beginning the first day of May, the legendary seaside resort, located in the center of town, opens its doors for what is known worldwide in gay and gay friendly destinations, as Tea. From 4 pm to 7 pm it is one big dance party happening everyday. With cocktails on the deck and a dance floor that welcomes everyone, even straight people, this is an abandon all inhibitions dance party and a glorious way to enjoy the sunset over picturesque Provincetown Harbor. Come high season there is an entrance fee of around $10 but trust me, it is worth every penny. This is great

WHITEWATER IN THE ADIRONDACKS

“One phenomenal river ride with rapids anywhere from 8 to 10 feet” – Gary Staab, owner of Adirondack River Outfitters. Looking for an adrenaline rush? Hop on a Cape Air flight to Saranac Lake and join the adventure of whitewater rafting on the churning waters of the upper Hudson River. “Spring brings high intensity to the river along with the hardy souls looking for a true rafting adventure and, despite what can be a cold day, these folks want to be out there,” says Adirondack River Outfitters owner Gary Staab. Gary knows what he is talking about for his company has been New York State’s leading whitewater rafting company for over thirty years. “We discovered the whitewater of the Black River Gorge, and led the successful effort to preserve the river’s environment and whitewater for future generations,” says Staab. The company has an impeccable safety record and no one enters a boat without an extensive safety briefing and even a trial run down the river. Until Memorial Day trips are around $85, then the river turns family-friendly and perfect for kids. Full line-up at aroadventures.com

“This is the true west with wide open spaces, miles of unspoiled nature, great fishing, museums that keep our wild west culture alive, and when it comes to dinosaur digs it is said we have more fossils here than anywhere else in the country,” says Carla Hunsley, Executive Director for Montana’s Missouri River Country. CARIBBEAN - VIEQUES “Global citizenship, ecotourism, and sustainability on the Puerto Rican Island of Vieques – this past winter twelve high school students from the New Hampton School in New Hampshire learned what happens when we come together with open eyes, minds, hearts and hands. It was a week that gave us a powerful snapshot of all that is possible when walls are torn down, boundaries crossed and bridges built connecting people all around the world. These kids demonstrated that there is reason to have hope; our future is in good hands. And they had fun doing it. We humans have the power to create a world that is truly just, and a sustainable future has never been more possible. Like these young people we can open our eyes, our minds, our hearts and hands. We might just be surprised by what following their example can teach us.” – Tim Little, chaperone for New Hampton School, New Hampshire

When the Bird’s Eye View makes a mistake it is usually a doozy. We misidentified St. Croix’s luxurious Buccaneer resort. This family owned waterfront jewel is a St. Croix landmark. Golf, tennis, water sports and for your wedding or honeymoon romance rules at the Buccaneer, once featured on the popular television show, The Bachelor. thebuccaneer.com PHOTO BY KELLY GREER
