Travis Luckhurst in the flesh by LaRae Wilson

I am a self taught artist from San Diego, California. Drawing, painting, and art projects of all sorts have always been my primary passion in life. Graffiti, comic book, and tattoo art are the art styles I dig the most. But I enjoy all other styles of art and consider myself a versatile artist; adapting to whatever the task at hand may require. I started out living the 'starving artist' lifestyle, in other words, humble beginnings. Getting every kind of job that you can imagine from pushin' pencils to buildin' houses has given me a good sense of what I don't want to do for a living. Although I've been drawing since I can remember, I had somewhat of a late start

pursuing art as a profession. Through dealing with life's little hurdles, I pushed myself into college and eventually came out with a Associates Degree in Graphic Design. This is all stuff that makes me the adaptable, charismatic person that I am. I have been in the industry my whole life really, but focusing on art as a career for at least 12 years. When did you know that you wanted to be in the Arts? The most meaningful primary memory I have was at a very young age a group of my friends and I would have art contests together and I won

among the group of friends. One of my friends in particular thoroughly loved the superhero drawing I created. I remember his excited reaction to the drawing of the superhero – that reaction stoked a fire within me. The whole idea of creating art to please people and see their positive reactions inspired me to pursue art as a career. What is your biggest accomplishment in the industry? My biggest accomplishment thus far has been conquering the versatile art assignments while balancing my style with the exact needs of the project. This idea of being able to adapt myself to any challenge while keeping the integrity of the art and maintaining my own style has aloud me to take on any projects successfully.

Greed and focusing on the money diminishes the whole idea of being an artists. Everything you learned through the years are out the window just to make a buck – so caught up about making money and paying bills artists start sacrificing their beliefs. What impact do you want to have in the Arts? The greatest impact that I can produce is for people to appreciate me as an artists and the more people I can get to appreciate art in general. I also hope to be acknowledged for the fun and heart I put into anything I create.

THE UNITED STATES OF GOD VS. MARY

BY MARLIN BARNES

One of the benefits of the Affordable Care Act is contraceptive care with no co-pay. While this is a triumph for all women, Theopolitical forces chose to use this as a political football. The Catholic Bishops and other Judeo-Christian figureheads have thrown the “moral flag onto the field in an effort to penalize Women liberations down in their own proverbial red zone. Despite the fact that contraceptives are a great deterrent of abortion and are used mostly for controlling menstrual pain and frequency, Pro-Lifers and the Catholic bishops remain up in arms about religious freedom infringement. So what is religious freedom and which takes precedent when religious freedom and personal freedom collide? Religious freedom says that religious institutions can exercise their faith without the interference of the State. But what happens when religious

12

BIPOLAR NAKED March Issue

THE UNITED STATES OF GOD VS. MARY BY MARLIN BARNES beliefs break secular law? In the past history of the Mormon church, men could marry several women. But polygamy is against the law and they had to alter their practice. Now is Jesus disappointed in the Mormon church for compromising their beliefs? I pray not. The State should never be more compassionate than the Church in regard to civil matters particularly when the Gospel teaches us to “judge not” (Matt. 7:1) and “for each man to work out his own salvation” (Phil. 2:12). But here we are with religious leaders who refuse to “give unto Caesars what is Caesars” (Mark 12:17, tax exemptions), yet take from State treasure (subsidies for church institutions) to further their causes. Yet, they cry foul when a federal mandate runs contrary to a debatable belief or the practice of members of their own churches. This is why religious freedom should never take precedent over Federal law. The Church can’t live without the Fed. It’s not about “war on religion”, but as President Obama said, when referring to “class warfare”, its “just good math”. Many bishops and church leaders need be careful to not make a mockery of God’s word. God’s word has been misinterpreted and is still disputed amongst several sects of the Judeo-Christian faith. The Word of God has been used to justify slavery and wars and the oppression of social minorities like women and homosexuals. Being that it is merely “faith” based on no substantiated fact, it is foolhardy to justify Christian doctrine as the final word of secular Law. Christ is not of the world and exploits his followers to “be not conformed to the world, but transformed through the renewal of your mind”. Not the renewal of the ballot or donations to a super PAC.

13

When it comes to women’s rights the church is making a mockery of Christ. Christ is a God of freewill. We Christians call this “agape love”unconditional love. We all have the free will to do what we chose understanding God is a God is of consequence. He is the Judge and Jury of our faith. We are not the judge and legislation of this world. If we were, we would be no better than the Taliban. With so much radical religious thinking, we would find a repressed society run by the theological interpretations of a few. I believe this to be a scary proposition. Imagine being a Catholic, and a Protestant becomes president and does away with sacrament? It would be a holy riot in the streets. Don’t believe me? Ask the Arabs uprising in the streets against radical theocratic rule.

BIPOLAR NAKED March Issue

14

THE UNITED STATES OF GOD VS. MARY BY MARLIN BARNES This is why the Constitution is the finest man made document in world history. It gives all men the “unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. The Bible implores us Christians to “obey the laws of the land”. Even if contraceptives go against Church doctrine, it does not diminish Church doctrine, because no matter what the preacher says, we all have to live out our faith personally. NO MAN SAVES A SOUL. It is the God in him that draws man to Christ and it is Christ who “adds to the Church as he sees fit” (I Cor. 12:18). The mostly male panel that testified on this issue of religious liberty in regards to paying for contraceptives reminds me of another of Christ warnings. Christ gave firm warning to those Pharisees (religious leaders) who love to “sit in the best seats at the synagogues and greetings in the

marketplace” (Luke 11:43). Basically, THEY OUGHT NOT TO HAVE BEEN THERE. I cringe to think of how many women were turned off from or the Church when they saw that. Catholic bishops can’t even protect their children from felony sex acts by their priest. And where is the outrage against condoms and Viagra? In a word this is HYPOCRISY! Do they truly have the interest of their flock at heart or the power they yield over the political landscape? As a man, I wouldn’t bet against the former. Furthermore, under the Law, President Obama didn’t have to compromise, but the Law gave him the flexibility to protect religious freedom and women’s rights. Something the religious right and the Republican party are incapable of doing. Thank God our citizens are protected by the Constitution. And thank God we have a true, decerning Christian for a president.

PAYING TRIBUTE TO THE ARTISTS WHO PAYS THE PRICE by Marlin Barnes Marvin Gaye’s “Life is for Learning” is song about the price an artist pays for his talent and the ways in which he uses it. It is also so a cautionary tale for the fans, too. Imploring them to be guarded of the music and the life the artist portrays. Whitney is the epitome of ‘artist paying the price so we don’t have to pay”. She was an American angel on screen who could claim responsibility for millions of people world-wide

falling in love to “I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU” or celebrating victory to “One Moment in Time”. But at heart she was a street kid from Newark, who parents raised in the church. Sound familiar? I’m sure. Now add 100million and an enabler or two to the equations and you know the story. Yet, the tragedy of Whitney Houston is not so much her addictions, but rather the addiction of us- the fans. We all felt a tremendous lose upon

her death, but many of us felt an equal amount of guilt. Artist like Jimi Hendrix, Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson and Whitney are inspirations in life and sometimes even more in death. We reward and revere them when they exceed out gaudy expectations. Many of us will go to such extremes as camp out overnight for concert tickets or autograph sessions. A few even go so far as stalking them. That’s illegal. Period.

And what’s right is to thank Whitney Houston for being the Voice. She was the voice that, on many occasions, became our Voice. A fiveoctave star so bright it ignited the stars of Hudson and Knowles and Carrey. What many fail to realize is WHO these 80’s pop stars are in the annuals of television/social media. Whitney was the first, Black female megastar. She and the likes of Madonna, Jacko and McCarthy are the parents of the video. This makes it all the more But when the humanity of these man-made ironic how these entertainment media pioneers immortals pierces thru the glamorous exterior of MTV are so decimated with scrutiny from and reality deflated the fantasy we take offense the off-springs of this marketing method like and satirized them and marginalize there MediaTakeOut or E!NEWS. I believe that for all she gave to our hearts through her music far outweighs anything she could or did do to herself. We needed Whitney ‘s music. “Good songs are sent to man from God/To help us pass the test”. Her demons didn’t affect or lives but the angels in her smile, music and persona transcend the globe. If we can repay Whitney for the professional beauty and grace she exhibited, it is through our love. And through that love we will show respect for her private life and empathy for the pain of giving ones soul to the world. “Your love, darling/This is all we require/ And a little understanding”. And when it is all said and done, the music will always speak for Whitney so in her honor lets “groove to the LIGHT….DANCE WITH SOMEBODY”!

Some of become more acceptable, and by the time the the original denim jeans were made by Jacob 70's hit, jeans were a standard for casual wear in Davis, Calvin Rogers, and the incomparable America. Case in point, your historic American denim brands are Levi, Lee, favorite pair of jeans that were probably worn at and Wrangler, all of which are still making new least 100 days out of the year actually look and trendy styles. "DENIMby:NEVER DIES" Deon Lucas No other city embodies the staying power of Jeans more than the entertainment capital of the world, Los Angeles. Â Â LA is a city that is very diverse, widespread, and offers something for everyone, no matter who you are. Well the same can be said about jeans because they can literally be paired with anything and look great. Whether worn with a button up shirt, a polo, a tee, a vest, a leather jacket, a vintage tank, a cardigan, or a blazer, the jeans need to stand alone and make a statement. There are several various washes and cuts that will set one pair of jeans apart form another pair. Some example of washes are dark, light, medium, distressed, whiskers, acid, and tinted. Whiles cuts vary from standard, straight leg, skinny, tapered, bootcut, low rise, and baggy. Though style is somewhat subjective, the washes and cuts that designers today seem to favor are the dark/distressed, low rise, skinny or straight leg jeans. There is an art in constructing fine denim that will not only look good, but will last a lifetime. Some of the best denim is handmade in Italy. If the label says "made in Italy", then it is made with impeccable craftsmanship. Designers such as Replay, Diesel, True Religion, A.P.C., Edwin, D&G, and PRPs have some of the most distinguished crafted denim that sets them apart from "all the other jeans" on the market. Of course, the old adage "you get what you pay for" is applicable to clothes. With prices for good denim starting at $100.00 and going upward of $500.00, it's understandable how the average guy can feel limited to jeans from the Gap or whatever store has a sale at the local mall. However, do not over look department stores such as J. Crew, Abercrombie, and Zara. These labels are much less expensive yet modern and pays attention to detail while catering to the younger crowd. One doesn't have to pay the

suggested retail value for a nice pair of jeans. Second hand stores such as Z. Loft Boutique, Wasteland, and Crossroads specialize in slightly worn designer clothing for a mere fraction of the price. Looking good should also feel good.

A Letter from Fashion Week Dear Fashionistas and Dappers,

Fashion week is a fashion industry event, thats lasts approximately one week or so, which allows fashion designers, brands to display their latest collections in runway shows and buyers and the media to take a look at the latest trends and we bloggers to have something more interesting to write about. In the major fashion capitals, fashion weeks are semiannual events. January through March designers showcase their spring and winter collections and September through November the fall/summer collections are shown. I have been following fashion week for over six years and this has been the most interesting thus far. From NYFW to Paris to the recently wrapped up Milan fashion week has brought so many new trends. The most prevalent ones are as follow: Ladylike Lame Shiny gold lame-like fabric is poised to become a standout for fall, with designers such as Nanette Lepore, J. Mendel and Prabal Gurung using the flashy material on sleeve accents, trousers, skirts and gowns. Jumpsuits One-piece pantsuits - both solid and printed - were a noticeable force for fall, with designers such as Diane von Furstenberg, Jenny Packham and Peter Som presenting striking yet decidedly easy-to-wear versions. Wide Belts Just when we thought skinny belts were sticking around, designers shook up the waist accessory by reintroducing thick belts on everything from low-slung jeans to overcoats. As proof that the accessory is back, we noticed more than one heavy-hitting blogger and street style star rocking a super-wide belt. Cropped jackets/vests Super-short jackets and vests in varying colors and textures were literally all over NYFW, often layered with longer, loose garments underneath for an interesting, effortless silhouette. STATEMENT COLLARS were shown by designers such as Preen, Oscar de la Renta and Rodarte. The mixture of DARK BLUE AND BLACK was a combo seen on runways from Carolina Herrera to Prabal Gurung. Modern SUITING was huge, with designers showing thoughtful, chic ways to wear trousers or skirts and matching blazers. Los Angeles Fashion Week is right around the corner, runs from mid-march to late march. With so much excitement in the air and we angelos kill for fashion. I'm expecting to see the same trends but a lot more colors. If you would like to attend the shows, visit LAFW.com. See you there!!!!

AN INTIMATE NIGHT OUT WITH MAJOR WILLIAMS

BIPOLAR NAKED March Issue

‘So when the road to success seem miles away or the finish line isn't in sight just hold tight to your faith and know that when you put in the work, results somehow shall follow.’ Words to live by.- Major Williams

Major Williams, a Dallas, Texas native is a hip hop recording artist who first began his musical career at a local friends house, as a pastime hobby; a hobby that would spiral into something far beyond the expectations of anyone bearing witness to what was yet to come. Major Williams had his single release party, where he performed his hits "Leggo", "Dangerously Kool" & "I Do It Big" that are currently are available on iTunes or Huzo.com. The crowd was hot and the music was even hotter. The Charismatic Foxx ArtistMajor Williams hit the stage dressed in a simple but sexy long sleeved fitted shirt, with a pair a AMAZING jeans. His style is really laid back,

but ultra- sexy and his music matches his style. They crowd couldn’t get enough of his ADULT lyrics that had all the ladies screaming his name. I have to admit that I had a couple of MAJOR MOMENTS that night as well!!! Major Williams brought out his close friends to experience the MAJOR way his puts it down. How do you feel the event went? I feel like the event went great and was a huge success. There were so many people that came out to support and I got the opportunity to interact with new people who had probably never heard of me or my music but ended up appreciating my music. So if I was to rate the event on a scale of 1 to 10 I'd say it was a 10.

BIPOLAR NAKED March Issue

Job well done. Thanks for allowing me to do my ting Darren Matthews.

Any last words.... I'd just like to leave words of encouragement for What was it like to perform your any and everyone that's doing something positive music in front of your fans? to stick with your passion, goals & dreams because performing my music in front of old and once the mind is set on something all things are new fans was a dope experience considering possible. So when the road to success seem miles this is the first time I had so many people in away or the finish line isn't in sight just hold tight attendance who actually knew my music to your faith and know that when you put in the and was able to participate and sing along work, results somehow shall follow. Words to live the words as I performed. Great time! by.- Major Williams Do you still get nervous? I'm human so yes I do get nervous before hand, but when your sure of yourself or have been doing something for quite sometime like I have it becomes very natural. So my nervousness is a bit different, it's more so anxious and excited on my part because I love performing and feeling the feedback and energy of the crowd. Do you have any rituals or superstitions you have, before you perform? My ritual is pretty simple, I say a personal prayer to myself and also in vision my son Kahlo Williams's face which put's me in a calm place and then I just go for it. But my ritual does vary at times depending on the type of event and the magnitude of it. Where can we buy your new single? All three of my singles "Leggo", "Dangerously Kool" & "I Do It Big" are available on iTunes or Huzo.com, if you subscribe on my Huzo page you get a discount and earn money back from buying my single or any other music so be sure to check it out. www.huzo.com/ MajorWilliamsÂ

SHADES OF ELEGANCE GOSPEL BRUNCH BY LARAE WILSON

The event was fabulous! Honestly, I had to continually fight tears of happiness. It was so wonderful to see so many people of African descent at the Claremont Colleges. The work that Mesha, Simone, Myisha, and I put in came back triple fold. It was really more than I had expected. The gospel singers and the fashion show were exceptional, and having Rain recognize Antoinette Myers (the scholarship recipient) for her accomplishments warmed my

heart! This will definitely be an annual collaboration, says Kim Gadlin. Kim began working with OBSA in 2004 as the Program Coordinator of Programs and Leadership Development, and presently, She is the Acting Assistant Dean/Director. The Office of Black Student Affairs (OBSA), established in 1969, is not a college, but is a resource for the seven institutions at the Claremont Colleges, and we are a department within the Claremont

University Consortium (CUC). Our mission is to enhance and enrich students of African descent college experiences by offering events, programs, and one-on-one consulting that focuses on academic advancement, cultural understanding, social and emotional development. .OBSA has hosted the Annual Gospel Brunch for the past ten years, and is a staple event for Black History Month. It is a cultural event that gives contextual meaning and understanding of how gospel music and soul food have enriched American culture, and it is a great way to feed the body, mind and soul. This year was the first time that we have collaborated with an outside entity (Rain Boutique). And it was a great idea! This collaboration brought the community out. People from Los Angeles, Temecula, and surrounding cities such as Rancho Cucamonga and Pomona were present. This event has helped to put OBSA on the map as resource for people of the African Diaspora and other ethnicities. This event also brought out designers Bipolar Gear, Konstantly Iklektik, Garcee Clothing and Dhakmani. How did you come up with what you were presenting? “ I am presenting is a variety and an array of colors, I am designing as I go along getting inspired by the material, that is basically how my designs come out. I have something in my head and end up changing it by the time I lay the material down,”says Quyvonne Perry (Designer for Konstantly Iklektik). Needless, to say her looks were one-of-a -kind bangers. If you missed it this soul stirring event, you missed a great one!!!
