Cycling Jerseys

Fashion & Style

The Importance of Cycling Jerseys Cycling jerseys aren’t a requirement for riding a bike, but it’ll help make for a more comfortable ride. So, what’s so special about these jerseys? The Ride answer is in its material. With Me Fabric and Other Features Cycling jerseys are made of moisture moving fabrics that pull perspiration off your body and move it to the outside of the garment where it evaporates quickly. Additionally, cycling jerseys are cut to follow the natural lines of your body while riding. They use grippers to stay in place as you move around the bicycle, and many options also have pockets to help you carry things like food, phones, or tools. A lot of options also include some reflective features making you more visible while out on the road. All together these features make you more comfortable and safer on your bike. Finding the Right Size and Fit Some may be wary of wearing a cycling jersey, because they’ve only seen the ones that look as though they were made out of spandex. Well, times have changed, and there are now many styles and materials to choose from. When trying on a jersey, consider a few things: • When standing bolt upright, the jersey will feel short in the front and long in the back. It’s important to lean over a bit and try to replicate your cycling position. If the jersey still feels too short or long, then look for a new size or fit. • Costs will vary widely based on the material and complexity of the construction. From synthetic fibers to natural ones with every combination in between, jerseys use different materials to create something that is both functional and comfortable. Keeping these facts in mind you’ll find the jersey that’s right for you.

Before you ride, setup your bike to fit you. I encourage you to find a friend to help look at you on your bicycle and adjust your fit. If no one is available, use your phone and take video of you sitting and riding your bicycle. Look at the two riders Above. The rider on the right is in for some sore days. The excessive amount of bend to his legs is making his knee support all his effort at a very acute angle, which puts excess strain on the joint. His leaning over means his upper body weight is supported only by his lower back and arms, which results in a sore back, shoulder, arms, and painful hands. His low saddle overworks his quadriceps and doesn’t engage his gluteus or calf muscles, and his head is positioned so low he must crane his neck up aggressively just to see. This will result in a sore neck. The rider on the left is bending his leg at a wider angle which results in proper leg extension while pedaling, and incorporates all his muscles (helps with efficiency). To set saddle height: sit on your bike, place your heel on your pedal, and rotate the pedals backward. You want your leg completely extended while keeping your hips level (at the bottom of the pedal stroke your leg should be just barely locked out with your heel touching the pedal). If you find you aren’t getting complete extension raise your saddle, but lower it if you’re tilting your hip to reach the bottom of the pedal stroke. The rider on the left has more support as well. He is using his bone structure to support himself by adjusting his bar so his back is at an angle over 45 degrees from the ground. His arms extend at a 90-degree angle from his back with a very small bend to the elbow. He has adjusted his grips and controls to be in place when he reaches out to take the bar. He does not need to turn his wrist up or down to shift or brake. The rider on the left also has a very comfortable position for his head. He can see around and in front naturally without needing to stretch. Once you have a comfortable setup, you should experience hours upon hours of painless riding. If discomfort continues, then consult with your local bike shop. They are trained in advanced personal fitting techniques and can offer insights into potential causes of discomfort.

Finding the Right Saddle

Accessorize Your Bike

A comfortable saddle is essential to enjoying your next bike ride and finding the right one can be easy with these few tips!

Bigger isn’t Always Better A bigger saddle is not always more comfortable, its shape that determines how comfortable a saddle is. Your ideal saddle shape depends on your riding position, so be sure to figure that out before you make a purchase.

Two Riding Positions Riders either ride on their pubic arch (see figure) or their sit bones (technically called Ischial Tuberosity). Pubic arch riders lean forward toward the bars and rotate their hips forward. Those who rest on their sit bones are positioned more upright with their hips rotating backward.

How do You Tell the Difference??

Curved Seat

Pubic Arch

Ischial tuberosity

Flat Seat

The easiest way to figure out which saddle might work for you is to view the saddle from behind (if it were on the bike you could look down the length of the saddle and see the handlebar). Is the saddle shaped in a constant curve from right to left, with no flat sections? This saddle is probably best for those who rest on their pubic arch. If the saddle has a flat section, it is more geared to riders who rest on their sit bones.

Time for a Test Drive Once you find a few saddles that match your riding position try them out (Most local bike shops offer some sort of service for saddle fitting). Install the saddle on your bike for a short test ride, and remember it will feel unfamiliar at first. Focus on how you are resting on the saddle. It’s a good sign if you can rest in one spot comfortably. You should feel supported evenly without any one localized point of pressure. If you find yourself shifting around frequently to find a good spot, that saddle probably doesn’t fit too well.

Follow these tips and you’ll be riding comfortably in no time.

The Comfort Gel saddle uses a full cutout to eliminate soft tissue pressure while adding gel padding to maximize soothing comfort. Add in a weather resistant coating and you have the perfect saddle for relaxing rides on your town and leisure bike.

Bontrager Commuter Gel Saddle

The Comuter Gel saddle provides efficient support and comfort to ensure every commute is smooth and pressure-free. A full cutout eliminates soft tissue pressure while a layer of forgiving gel padding adds everyday comfort.

Preparing for Your First Trip

Top Off Your Game

Congratulations, you have decided to take the leap and sign up for a bike event. It could be a small charity ride, your first triathlon, or a multi-day bike tour. Regardless of the kind of ride, there are a few things you should know before leaving your front door.

Pack Heavy I’m not encouraging you to bring everything you own, but be sure to pack for all kinds of situations. Bring a jacket, arm warmers, knee warmers, and rain gear for changing weather conditions. Be sure to bring extra tubes, chain lube, hex keys, rags, and a floor pump to keep your bike running. Don’t forget food (for pre-, during, and post-ride), water, and bottles to keep you going strong.

Know Your Route Most events will share a map of the route in advance. Print a paper version of it, just in case your digital solution fails. If you are making your own route create a cue sheet, which lists each turn of the ride by street and distance for quick reference.

Random Goods Even if you plan and pack well, unexpected things happen. Be sure to bring a zip lock bag (preferably big enough to house you phone to keep it dry), a small bit of Duct tape, travel tissues, 4 quarters, and a $10 bill. With those items, you can protect things from the elements, repair the unrepairable, buy ice cream, and do a host of other things.

Take Care of Your Baby A mechanical problem on a long trip is a huge buzzkill. Avoid any issues by first cleaning your bike thoroughly, and then take it in for service. Having your bike running in tip-top shape makes the ride that much more enjoyable.

Enjoy the Experience Of all the “things” you bring with you, be sure to leave your stress at home. No ride has ever gone according to plan. In fact, some of the most enjoyable rides are the ones full of the unexpected! Enjoy the journey and stay positive.

Keep Your Bike Ready-to-Ride

Helpful Bike Tools & Supplies

Like any other mechanical device , your bicycle needs routine maintenance to ensure it’s safe to ride when you need it. Here are a few tips to put you on the right track!

Tip 1: Stay Away from the Hose Every moving part on your bicycle needs lubrication to function properly. A hose forces water in and lubricant out, leaving your bicycle susceptible to corrosion and excess wear. Instead, fill a bucket with warm, soapy water (Dawn dish detergent works well) and use a large sponge or washcloth to clean all the parts of your bicycle. From top to bottom rinse it all off with fresh water, and let the bicycle air dry.

Tip 2: Focusing on the Drivetrain If you have a particularly dirty drivetrain (the gears, chain, and the little pulley wheels on your derailleur) and want to get it sparkling you will need the following: • Degreaser • A stiff bristled brush • Rubber gloves • Protective eyewear

Tip 3: Reapply Lubricant Now that the bicycle is clean, reapply lubricant. The only places that need lube are the chain and possibly cables. Step 1: To lube the chain, prop your bicycle up so you can freely backpedal. While backpedaling, coat the chain evenly with lubricant. Step 2: Once the chain is well lubricated, fold a rag around the chain, backpedal, and remove all the excess lubricant you can (the chain will feel almost dry to the touch). Note: If you feel you need to lube the cables, apply lubricant in small doses, where the cable enters the housing. Cycle the gears, or squeeze the brakes until capillary action transports the lube into the cable housing.

Making sure your bicycle is clean and properly lubricated is essential to making sure your bike is ready to go when you’re ready to ride.

Riding with a Theme Song

Digital Gadgets

There’s nothing like your favorite playlist to keep you pedaling in high spirits even through the toughest rides. But space is limited while riding a bike, so here a few of the most portable options.

Earbuds It all comes down to personal preference, but the most common ways people listen is through earbuds. They do a great job because they fit snugly into your ear (eliminating a lot of wind noise), are light and collapsible, and don’t need an additional power source. The downside of earbuds is they can limit your ability to hear your surroundings. We take for granted how much our auditory sense contributes to our perception of the world. If you want to use earbuds it’s best you use just one. Most media devices will allow you to shift all sound to one earbud, leaving your other ear open and keeping you safe.

Speakers Another simple option is to use the speakers in your phone and an on-bike mount. This option works okay, but sound quality and battery life end up being an issue. Another popular choice is to use a portable speaker. Lots of riders are find it easy to mount a speaker to their bike or person. This option maintains good sound quality, while allowing you to hear the world around you. The volume can also be adjusted so that those out of your immediate vicinity won’t hear your choice in boyband.

Rock Out Responsibly Whatever you choose, remember to be responsible. Be responsible to yourself by not eliminating your ability to hear the world around you, and responsible to others who want to enjoy all the sights and sounds uninterrupted.

What Bike Is Right for Me?

Next Bike

Like everything else in the world today, there are no shortages of choices when it comes to bikes. So how do you figure out what is right for you?

Step one, determine where you want to ride. Typical choices are on the road, path/trail, and off road with many subdivisions of each.

Step two, how frequently do you plan on riding? Bicycle costs range from around $300 up into the tens of thousands. The most basic models use less durable materials like plastics in the shifting components and mild steel rather than stronger alloys. As the prices increase, stronger metals replace less durable materials, lending to a bicycle that will hold up better to frequent use.

Step three, why are you riding? Fun and fitness, speed and adrenaline, or competition all put different strains on a bicycle. Be sure to match your riding style with the bike you get.

Educate Yourself Now it’s time for some research. What kind of bike do you need? There are three main categories of bicycles, but each one has its own subcategories as well. For those, it’s best to visit your local bike shop.

Mountain Bikes Mountain bikes are designed for off road use. They sport the largest tires of any category and are equipped with suspension designed to keep the rider in control on rough trails. Mountain bikes have low gearing so riders can pedal up steep grades of loose ground. A lot of riders enjoy the stability and position of a mountain bike for path/trail riding as well as true off road riding.

Road Bicycles Designed with speed and efficiency in mind, road bikes are best suited on roads due to the small tire size. These bicycles are the lightest of the three categories. Some road bikes are equipped with flat handlebars, but most come with a drop bar. Many riders love the speed and lightweight of these bicycles.

Path/Trail Path/trail bikes are the largest volume of bicycles sold. These bicycles use an upright handlebar and a more comfortable seating position. The tires range from something narrow (like a road bike) to as wide as a mountain bike. Some are also fitted with suspension designed for comfort rather than control. While not as quick as a road bike, these bikes offer great efficiency on longer bike tours.

Drive Your Bike

Minnesota has dozens of League Cycling Instructors (LCI) who teach classes across the state. From short lunch sessions to the nine hour Traffic Skills 101, the core message is the same. Drive your bike. Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles. FOLLOW THE LAW Your safety and the image of bicyclists depend on you. You have the same rights and duties as drivers. Obey traffic signals and stop signs, ride with traffic; use the rightmost lane that serves your destination. BE PREDICTABLE Make your intentions clear to motorists and other road users. Ride in a straight line and don’t swerve between parked cars. Signal turns, and check behind you well before turning or changing lanes. BE VISIBLE Ride where drivers can see you; wear bright clothing. Use a front white light, red Photo courtesy of John Hardy rear light and reflectors at night or when visibility is poor. Make eye contact with drivers. Don’t ride on sidewalks. THINK AHEAD Anticipate what drivers, pedestrians, and other bicyclists will do next watch for turning vehicles and ride outside the door zone of parked cars. Look out for debris, potholes, and utility covers. Cross railroad tracks at right angles. RIDE READY Check: tires for sufficient air, brakes are working, chain runs smoothly, and quick release wheel levers are closed. Carry repair and emergency supplies. Always wear a helmet.

Buying A Bicycle . . . . .at a Big Box Store, . . . . . . . . . on the Internet, . . . . . . . . . . . . . . or a Bike Shop?

No matter how you purchase a new bicycle, all bikes arrive boxed and have to be assembled and tuned before they are ready to ride. Normally at a discount store the bikes on display are assembled by a person who has little or no knowledge of the mechanics of a bicyclewhat happens many times, basic adjustments are overlooked and the lifecycle of your purchase decreases. This is due to bearings sometimes not seated properly at the factory or crank and wheel alignment that need to be fine tuned are ignored. Still, the most inexpensive bike can give you enjoyable service if adjusted properly and maintained. Then, purchasing a bike over the web may be another way to shave the cost of that bike you want to purchase. Except here, shipping charges are usually an added cost and you are on your own for assembly and adjustments. At a bicycle store you will find a wide selection of bicycles to fit your riding style and comfort level with adjustments made by the bike shop’s knowledgeable staff. So, before buying, compare your options by visiting your neighborhood bike dealer. Here are five reasons to stop in to a shop in your community before purchasing a bike in a box: Knowledgeable Advice From People Who Know Bikes. Each bicycle shop has trained staff who know the bikes you are interested in. Because of their product knowledge they can give you valuable advice. Finding The Proper Frame Size Will Give You The Right Fit. Bicycles come in many sizes to help fit riders of all ages and sizes. To assure that the investment you are planning on making gives you years of comfort and enjoyment, a bike dealer will go beyond the wheel size to recommend the right fit for your individual needs. Test Rides Are Always Available at a Bicycle Store. The best way to know if a bike is for you, is to try it! Just ask for a test ride before you buy. A Good Selection of Models To Fit Your Cycling Needs. Most bicycle stores carry several brands offering models for: juvenile riders including BMX use; comfort/cross-train styles for recreational riding; electric assist, special needs options; many selections for the juvenile rider; and a wide selection for mountain biking, racing, road/tour riding, triathlons and more. A Free Bike Tune-up With Your Purchase. Once you have purchase a bike at a shop they will offer you a complimentary tune-up and do final check so the bike lasts a long time.

Healthy Eating

• Eat a variety of vitamin-packed foods, especially whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat or fat-free milk or foods high in calcium, leaner meats and other proteins. • Reduce your risk of cancer and other chronic diseases by eating as many fruits and vegetables as you want. It is the best way for your body to get the nutrients it needs. • Drink less pop and other sweet drinks — a can of pop has the same amount of sugar as a six-inch Snickers candy bar. • Limit saturated and trans fats, salt, added sugars and alcohol. • Eat moderately at meals and limit excessive caloric intake. • Limit the portion size of low-nutrient foods. Each portion should be no bigger than your fist. • Pay attention to how much you are eating. Grazing is a common reason people overeat. • Eat within two hours of waking up so your body’s metabolism will increase slightly throughout the day and help you burn calories. IMBA developed the “Rules of the Trail” to promote responsible and courteous conduct on shared-use trails. Keep in mind that conventions for yielding and passing may vary in different locations, or with traffic conditions. 1. Ride Open Trails: Respect trail and road closures — ask a land manager for clarification if you are uncertain about the status of a trail. Do not trespass on private land. Obtain permits or other authorization as required. Be aware that bicycles are not permitted in areas protected as state or federal Wilderness.

2. Leave No Trace: Be sensitive to the dirt beneath you. Wet and muddy trails are more vulnerable to damage than dry ones. When the trail is soft, consider other riding options. This also means staying on existing trails and not creating new ones. Don't cut switchbacks. Be sure to pack out at least as much as you pack in. 3. Control Your Bicycle: Inattention for even a moment could put yourself and others at risk. Obey all bicycle speed regulations and recommendations, and ride within your limits.

4. Yield Appropriately: Do your utmost to let your

fellow trail users know you're coming — a friendly greeting or bell ring are good methods. Try to anticipate other trail users as you ride around corners. Bicyclists should yield to other non-motorized trail users, unless the trail is clearly signed for bike-only travel. Bicyclists traveling downhill should yield to ones headed uphill, unless the trail is clearly signed for one-way or downhill-only traffic. In general, strive to make each pass a safe and courteous one.

5. Never Scare Animals: Animals are easily startled by an unannounced approach, a sudden movement or a loud noise. Give animals enough room and time to adjust to you. When passing horses, use special care and follow directions from the horseback riders (ask if uncertain). Running cattle and disturbing wildlife are serious offenses.

6. Plan Ahead: Know your equipment, your ability and the area in which you are riding and prepare accordingly. Strive to be self-sufficient: keep your equipment in good repair and carry necessary supplies for changes in weather or other conditions. Always wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear.
