Choose an electric bike for your style of bicycle riding You have probably read or heard about electric bikes or e-bikes and the improvements that have been made over the past couple of years. If you are curious and would like to check them out, you need to ask a couple of questions before purchasing one and having some fun.
First, how will you use an electric bike • commuting to work, running errands and/or hauling cargo • bike touring and/or recreational riding • spending more time on off-road trails • assist with rehabbing after a sports injury?
Then ask yourself • will an e-bike make it easier to stay active • make it more enjoyable, especially when dealing with hills and headwinds • help so I can keep up with friends who ride faster? Because electric bike technology is progressing quickly with batteries that are lighter and allow you a better range between charges, the options are endless. Today there are bikes for every conceivable application from hauling cargo to making a climb on a mountain bike trails a breeze. Geared to accommodate different kinds of activities (cargo hauling; relaxed cruising; trail riding; mountain biking; child transportation; road biking; fat bike riding; touring; and urban commuting). With so many e-bikes on the market today, design options vary to fit different people and their preference of use. It’s up to you to decide what is most important. Is the ease of riding; the cost; maintenance, dependability, and range - all the above? With so many models on the market to choose from, first, figure out where you are going to be riding, and then how often. Now that you have answered some of the questions, visit a few bike shops to see all the latest brands and models available to test ride.

Tips From
Easy Steps to Properly Fit a Bicycle Helmet
It’s not enough to simply buy a bicycle helmet – it should be properly fitted, adjusted, and worn each time you ride.
The Proper Helmet Fit
Helmets come in various sizes, just like hats. Size can vary between manufacturers. For the most comprehensive list of helmet sizes according to manufacturers, go to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute (BHSI) site. To select and properly fit a bicycle helmet, follow the helmet fitting instructions in this flyer. It may take some time to ensure a proper fit. It is easier if you have someone help you adjust the straps.
Step 1 Size:
Measure your head for approximate size. Try the helmet on to ensure it fits snuggly. While it is sitting flat on top of your head, make sure the helmet doesn’t rock side to side. Sizing pads come with new helmets; use the pads to securely fit to your head. Mix or match the sizing pads for the greatest comfort. In your child’s helmet, remove the padding when your child’s head grows.
Step 2 Position:
The helmet should sit level on your head and low on your forehead—one or two finger-widths above your eyebrow.
Step 3 Buckles:
Center the left buckle under the chin. On most helmets, the straps can be pulled from the back of the helmet to lengthen or shorten the chin straps. This task is easier if you take the helmet off to make these adjustments.
Step 4 Side Straps:
Adjust the slider on both straps to form a “V” shape under, and slightly in front of, the ears. Lock the slider if possible.
Step 5 Chin Strap:
Buckle your chin strap. Tighten the strap until it is snug, so that no more than one or two fingers fit under the strap.
Step 6 Final Fitting:
A. Does your helmet fit right? Open your mouth wide…big yawn! The helmet should pull down on the head. If not, refer back to step 5 and tighten the chin strap. B. Does your helmet rock back more than two fingers above the eyebrows? If so, unbuckle, shorten the front strap by moving the slider forward. Buckle, retighten the chin strap, and test again. C. Does your helmet rock forward into your eyes? If so, unbuckle, tighten the back strap by moving the slider back toward the ear. Buckle, retighten the chin strap, and test again. D. Roll the rubber band down to the buckle. All four straps must go through the rubber band and be close to the buckle to prevent the buckle from slipping.

Drive your bike. Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles. FOLLOW THE LAW Your safety and the image of bicyclists depend on you. You have the same rights and duties as drivers. Obey traffic signals and stop signs, ride with traffic and use the rightmost lane that serves your destination. BE PREDICTABLE Make your intentions clear to motorists and other road users. Ride in a straight line and don’t swerve between parked cars. Test riding an electric bike before purchasing One of the most important, and yet fun parts of buying an electric bike is taking the models you are most interested in out for a test ride. Just like buying a car, once you have narrowed the selection down a test ride will help you finalize your decision. Visiting several bicycle shops that carry the e-bike brands you are most interested in will allow you to put aside skeptics, reviews, and research. Helping you answer the most basic question, which e-bike do I love the most? So put on your bike shorts and helmet and go for a ride. Check your list and get a feel for which electric bike is best for you. Also, don’t forget to bring your driver’s license and a credit card along. Some shops may require you to leave your identification card with them. Or, they may want to swipe your credit card in case some damage happens on your test ride.
While test riding an e-bike: • does the bike climb hills the way you need it to • will the e-bike fit you the way you would like it to • and finally, while riding, is the quality and functionality what you expected? Now that you are back from your test ride, does the e-bike you like the best fit into your budget and is there a warranty? Buying an electric bike is a big investment, regardless if it is $1,500 or $10,000. With a warranty, you can rest assured that your investment is somewhat covered. A two-year warranty on parts, motor, and battery (with no exclusions for normal use) is reasonable to expect from most electric bike manufacturers with bikes selling for over $1,500. Most of the questions above can be answered at a bike shop that carries the model you are most interested in. So, make your list of questions and come prepared to test ride some of the best e-bikes available in the market.

Maximizing the distance your electric bike can go on a charge The distance an electric bike will go on one charge of the battery is called range. This is an important specification to pay attention to when comparing e-bikes, to your desired riding style. If your commute involves big hills, for example, you don’t want to run out of juice halfway up. Without power, an e-bike becomes a heavy mode of transportation that demands more energy on your part to pedal. So the range of an electric bike depends on the following:
The electric bikes battery capacity Conservatively, lithium-ion batteries are typically said to last for 1,000 full charge cycles. Now think of a volt as the “force” pushing an amp through the system. The higher the voltage the more energy can be moved, or the faster it can be moved. So, a higher voltage system can send more energy through the circuits to the motor.
The voltage output of the motor Because most e-bike systems are standardized; what you want to look for, to maximize your total range, is the time it takes before you need to recharge the battery. To do that, look for an e-bike battery with a high WattHour rating.
Plan your ride to extend your range If you are able to define a specific route you want to commute will help you better predict the distance you will be able to safely travel between charges. Then, knowing how many hills there are to climb will further help you define the workload you will put on the motor.
If you’re only going to do six to ten miles of daily commuting you don’t need a battery or motor set for a 50 to 70-mile range. What’s an e-Bike Motor?

Selecting the right type of electric bike motor for your style of riding Electric bike motors have technically come a long way in the last few years. Typically these motors are located in three different areas of an e-bike. The first two locations are found in either the front or rear wheel, called hub motors. In recent years the center mount motor, in the crank area has gained in popularity.
Electric bikes with hub motors The hub motor is in the center of either bicycle wheel, and for many years was the most common. This e-bike power source was known to be quieter. The biggest negative, if you are off-road, the hub motor doesn’t handle hills like a motor that’s directly connected to the crank.
E-bikes motors in the center crank area Becoming more standard, the motor in the center crank/pedal area is at the bottom of the frame. It transfers the motor’s power to the rear wheel via the bicycle’s chain or belt. That means the electronic controls can include a sensor that detects how hard you’re pedaling. It can also measure the electric assistance needs, accordingly. Generally, a crank/drive motor will take advantage of your gears. Helping you to keep your weight distribution low and near the center of your bike, especially when climbing steep hills.
The voltage output of the electric bike motor you choose When it comes to voltage output and power of the motor, here again, you need to assess your style of riding to figure out what is best. To meet government regulations, as a legal pedal-assist bike, the top speed is generally capped at 28 mph depending on the system. If you are riding relatively flat areas around town lower power motors may be enough when you only need a boost, from fatigue or headwinds. More power is best if you plan to tow a load or are a larger rider. So first define your riding style to select the right motor for an electric bike. Tips on charging your electric bike battery to maximize its life The most expensive component of your new electric bike is the battery. Most of the price involved in buying a ready to go e-bike is the size of the bikes storage unit, the lithium-ion battery pack. These batteries are now used in all types of applications. So it’s no surprise to find them powering electric bikes. What you will discover, more expensive e-bikes have higher-tech batteries that are lighter, charge quickly, and last longer. What you will also find, batteries degrade over time holding less charge as they age?
The quality of an electric bike battery makes a difference The better the battery is will help you maximize the distance (range) you expect to achieve, so look for a reputable named manufacturer. Then make sure the warranty covers the battery for at least two years. Conservatively lithium-ion batteries are typically said to last for 1,000 full charge cycles. That’s about three years of daily use five to seven times a week. With careful use, the battery can survive longer, so you should get at least 2,000 half-charge cycles. IIn practice, gaining several years out of a battery is quite easy to achieve. This will depend on the quality of the battery, how often its charged and how it is stored.

Keep Your Bike Ready-to-Ride

Like any other mechanical device, your bicycle needs routine maintenance to ensure it’s safe to ride when you need it. Here are a few tips to put you on the right track!
Tip 1: Stay Away from the Hose Every moving part on your bicycle needs lubrication to function properly. A hose forces water in and lubricant out, leaving your bicycle susceptible to corrosion and excess wear. Instead, fill a bucket with warm, soapy water (Dawn dish detergent works well) and use a large sponge or washcloth to clean all the parts of your bicycle. From top to bottom rinse it all off with fresh water, and let the bicycle air dry.
Tip 2: Focusing on the Drivetrain If you have a particularly dirty drivetrain (the gears, chain and the little pulley wheels on your derailleur) and want to get it sparkling you will need the following: • Degreaser • A stiff bristled brush • Rubber gloves • Protective eyewear
Tip 3: Reapply Lubricant Now that the bicycle is clean, reapply lubricant. The only places that need lube are the chain and possibly cables. Step 1: To lube the chain, prop your bicycle up so you can freely backpedal. While backpedaling, coat the chain evenly with lubricant. Step 2: Once the chain is well lubricated, fold a rag around the chain, backpedal, and remove all the excess lubricant you can (the chain will feel almost dry to the touch). Note: If you feel you need to lube the cables, apply lubricant in small doses, where the cable enters the housing. Cycle the gears, or squeeze the brakes until capillary action transports the lube into the cable housing.
Having a clean and properly lubricated bicycle is essential to making sure your bike is ready to go when you’re ready to ride.

What Bike Is Right for Me?

Like everything else in the world today, there are no shortages of choices when it comes to bikes. So how do you figure out what is right for you? Step one, determine where you want to ride. Typical choices are on the road, path/trail and off road with many subdivisions of each. Step two, how frequently do you plan on riding? Bicycle costs range from around $300 up into the tens of thousands. The most basic models use less durable materials like plastics in the shifting components and mild steel rather than stronger alloys. As the prices increase, stronger metals replace less durable materials, lending to a bicycle that will hold up better to frequent use. Step three, why are you riding? Fun and fitness, speed and adrenaline or competition all put different strains on a bicycle. Be sure to match your riding style with the bike you get. Now it’s time for some research. What kind of bike do you need? There are three main categories of bicycles, but each one has its own subcategories as well. For those, it’s best to visit your local bike shop. Mountain Bikes Mountain bikes are designed for off road use. They sport the largest tires of any category and are equipped with suspension designed to keep the rider in control on rough trails. Mountain bikes have low gearing so riders can pedal up steep grades of loose ground. A lot of riders enjoy the stability and position of a mountain bike for path/trail riding as well as true off road riding. Road Bicycles Designed with speed and efficiency in mind, road bikes are best suited on roads due to the small tire size. These bicycles are the lightest of the three categories. Some road bikes are equipped with flat handlebars, but most come with a drop bar. Many riders love the speed and lightweight of these bicycles. Path/Trail Bikes Path/trail bikes are the largest volume of bicycles sold. These bicycles use an upright handlebar and a more comfortable seating position. The tires range from something narrow (like road bikes) to as wide as mountain bikes. Some are also fitted with suspension designed for comfort rather than control. While not as quick as road bikes, these bikes offer great efficiency on longer bike tours.

IMBA developed the “Rules of the Trail” to promote responsible and courteous conduct on shared-use trails. Keep in mind that conventions for yielding and passing may vary in different locations or with traffic conditions.
1. Ride Open Trails: Respect trail and road closures — ask a land manager for clarification if you are uncertain about the status of a trail. Do not trespass on private land. Obtain permits or other authorization as required. Be aware that bicycles are not permitted in areas protected as state or federal wilderness. 2. Leave No Trace: Be sensitive to the dirt beneath you. Wet and muddy trails are more vulnerable to damage than dry ones. When the trail is soft, consider other riding options. This also means staying on existing trails and not creating new ones. Don't cut switchbacks. Be sure to pack out at least as much as you pack in. 3. Control Your Bicycle: Inattention for even a moment could put yourself and others at risk. Obey all bicycle speed regulations and recommendations, and ride within your limits.
4. Yield Appropriately: Do your utmost to let your fellow trail users know you're coming — a friendly greeting or bell ring are good methods. Try to anticipate other trail users as you ride around corners. Bicyclists should yield to other non-motorized trail users unless the trail is clearly signed for bike-only travel. Bicyclists traveling downhill should yield to ones headed uphill unless the trail is clearly signed for one-way or downhill-only traffic. In general, strive to make each pass a safe and courteous one.
5. Never Scare Animals: Animals are easily startled by an unannounced approach, a sudden movement or a loud noise. Give animals enough room and time to adjust to you. When passing horses, use special care and follow directions from the horseback riders (ask if uncertain). Running cattle and disturbing wildlife are serious offenses.
6. Plan Ahead: Know your equipment, your ability and the area in which you are riding then prepare accordingly. Strive to be self-sufficient: keep your equipment in good repair and carry necessary supplies for changes in weather or other conditions. Always wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear.
