I am, and have always been, and shall now always be, a revolutionary writer, because our Laws make Law Impossible; our Liberties destroy all Freedom; our Property is organized Robbery; our Morality is an Impudent Hypocrisy; our Wisdom administer by inexperienced or mal experienced Dupes, our Power wielded by Cowards and Weaklings, and our Honour False in all its points. Editorial WE THE[ selfish] MUSLIMS Assalamualaikum, Last month a young cousin of mine passed away. Oral cancer took his life. That whole week we spent anxious time sitting on the wooden chairs stone steps, the railings….wherever we found a place…all waiting praying and no need to mention it was too painful to think about our brother and his pain. Each of his organs failing with each passing day and then slowly with each passing hour, his pulses began diminishing. His two year old son kept asking his, mother, when his Abbu will be taken home, he was bored sitting in the hospital he said, missing his Tom and Jerry re runs . His a little girl insisted to be taken to the ICU for a glimpse of her father, and then the moment came and their Abbu was taken home, at last. Motionless.

Silent victims in Iraq UK-based Iraqi writer Hussein Al-Alak wrote on the upcoming tenth anniversary of the Iraq invasion with a tribute to the country’s “silent victims,” the children. According to Iraqi Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, he reported, there is an estimated 4.5 million children who are now orphans, with a “shocking 70 percent” of them having lost their parents since the 2003 invasion. “From that total number, around 600,000 children are living on the streets, without either shelter or food to survive,” Al-Alak wrote. Those living in the few state-run orphanages “are currently lacking in their most essential needs.”

They say not to grieve after three days. And it was four months and ten days for my sister in law. Soon after, the women of the home began instructing her. She was not to venture out of the home and no makeup and the stuff. These , they all said and rightly so, were instructions from our Prophet Muhammad saws. So far so good. But to ask her not to venture out of her tiny room? Not to talk to even women? Cut to the scenario post four months ten days. She is still found in that tiny room, though frail and fragile and yes alone. I began wondering, all those who asked the widow to stick to Islam and Prophetic injunctions, …. Would they have the same attitude, same adherence to Islamic rules , post iddat? If she decides to remarry , to begin her life anew? Won’ they begin criticizing her, for sticking to Islam? Would they still have the courage to say yes to our Prophet Muhammad saws ‘s kindest ruling about widow remarriage? Our Islam begins where our selfishness ends. Ms.Asma Anjum Khan

Praveen Togadia of VHP proudly flaunts about the achievements of Sangh Parivar in killing thousands of Muslims in Assam, UP, Gujarat, and other places. He tells this challenging Akbar Owaisi that Police was aside (passive) and did not get involved, still no one could dare to stand against Sangh Parivar in riots and in all these places no one belonging to Sangh Parivar was killed. (It’s a kind of pride to him). At one side, Akbar Owaisi throws a challenge, but did nothing. On the other side, Praveen Togadia has thrown challenges and threats for the last 10 years, and takes pride in Muslim Genocide as well.

others. We saw 26/11 of Mumbai and the whole Media attention was diverted. Now, in 2013, when Media was all set to expose fake encounter of ISHRAT JAHAN, Hyderabad blasts took place and the whole Media attention is diverted. Don't know how the things go, but lives of innocents and the fellow citizens of my country who may be Ram, John or Ahmed, have to be slain for the disgusting politics. Some say, these are the preparations of 2014 elections. Some say it was retaliation of death of Afzal Guru. Some say, it was to divert Andhra-Telangana issue. Still, under-privileged people of my county suffer and innocent youths who have nothing to do with these acts get arrested and are released after 6-7 years. WHY THERE'S ALWAYS TROUBLE FOR THE COMMON PEOPLE?

Went through majority of the News reports about the r e c e n t Hyderabad blasts. Some of those are putting us to serious doubts: No sooner blasts took place, Saffron groups arrived on the spot and started disturbing Forensic evidences though Police at the site repeatedly asked them to move away. Soon after disturbing the Forensic evidences, they started making slogans and even stopped Chief Minister from arriving. Why did it have to happen? Why couldn't they help Police and Forensic by listening to them as they repeatedly asked to move away? Why did they disturb the place and made the proofs disorganised?

This is just an observation: In 2007 when the Media was all set on Vanjara the police officer of Gujarat for the fake encounters, Macca Masjid blast happened and suddenly Media attention took diversion. In 2008 when Media took attention on Brave Hemant Karkare's investigations on Pragya Thakur, Col. Purohit, and Bakhabar

Media houses say that they got information from the 'Khufiya Sootr' - their secret sources that they already knew about the Hyderabad blasts. I wonder, what were they doing even after knowing. I wish real culprits will be behind the bars not those on whom just a suspicion goes and Media hold them responsible based on doubts.

I saw 2 different persons at my office, one who looks short, paunchy, dark complexioned, long ears and weird looks. At first instance, no one likes talking to him; befriending him, far from it. But the way he speaks to people is wonderful. If he starts talking to people and getting engaged with them through his manners. People love to talk to him, listen to him carefully and are impressed by his manners. On the other hand is person with Italian looks, tall, fair complexioned with proper physique, but the way he talks to people by disdaining them is very bad. People talk him just to get their work done. What I observed is, no matter how you look and what you are,

We often hear people like Narender Modi, Praveen Togadia, Ashok Singhal and other Sangh foul-mouthed activists calling M u s l i m community to be 'OUT-SIDERS' or 'INVADERS'. Moreover, Sangh backed Media too portray Muslims as those who have nothing to do with India. Here is a simple question; if Muslims are Outsiders or Invaders in India, then bigger and bloody Invaders and Outsiders were ARYANS. Whose lineage continues till date. Interestingly, these villains deny Aryan invasion. As per Khuswant Sinha, indigenous Indians are Dravidians and Adivasi communities. If Outsiders have to go out, then let's follow FIFO - First In, First Out.

Where is the happiness? One day, the young lion asked his mom: "Mom, where is the happiness?" Mom replied: "It's on your tail." So the young lion keeps on chasing after his tail. But after a whole day of trying, he failed to get the happiness that was on his tail. Then he told his mom about this, his mom smiled and said: "Son, you don't really need to chase after your happiness, as long as you keep going and moving forward, your happiness will always be with you.." Wish everyone of you find your happiness. You can't decide the length of life, but you can control how you want to live it. You can't control the weather, but you can control your mood. You can't change your look, but you can smile. You can't control others, but you can control yourself. You can't foresee tomorrow, but you can utilize today wisely. Understanding Moderation and Extremism, Part-1 … Shakeel Ashraf <sashraf1966@yahoo.com> Moderation is to avoid excessiveness or extremes and to remain within reasonable limits. In recent past when the world witnessed the damages of extremism, the tag of ‘moderate’ became the best seller among intellectuals. As stated above moderates are the one who remain within reasonable limits. What are the limits and who is the authority to draw them? What happens when limits are violated? First example of violation of limits: The first violation of limits in human history can probably be traced in the episode depicted in Quran. [And narrate to them with truth the story of the two sons of Adam they made an offering. It was accepted of one of them and not accepted of the other. He threatened, ‘I will surely kill you.’ The other replied, ‘Allah accepts only of the godfearing. If you stretch your hand against me to kill me, I shall not lift mine to kill you. I fear Allah Lord of the worlds. Rather, I wish that you add on my sin to your other sin and end up a companion of the Fire. And that is the recompense of the transgressors.’ Thereupon his (evil) self drove him to the murder of his brother. He murdered him and became of the losers. That was why We prescribed this for the children of Israel: "He who killed any person, unless it be a person guilty of manslaughter, or of spreading chaos in the land, should be looked upon as though he had slain all mankind, and he who saved one life should be regarded as though he had saved the lives of all mankind." But the majority of them went on committing excesses in the land even after Our Messengers came to them one after the other with clear directions. 5:27-32] Let us rely on scholarly traditions to find out the reason of the subject conflict. It is said that with every pregnancy Hawwa’ gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl. Adam married off the girl of one birth to the boy of another, and vice versa. Habil was to marry Qabil’s sister and Qabil to the sister of Habil. But, because the girl born along with Qabil was prettier, he refused to marry Habil’s sister, rather wanted to marry the girl that was with him in the womb. Adam told him that she, having been in the same womb with him, was not lawful to him. But he insisted. The two decided to present an offering each to Allah to check whose would be accepted. Habil was a shepherd and he presented the best of sheep he had. Qabil tended farms and presented the worst kind of vegetables he could lay his hands on. The result did not matter to him, because he was bent upon marrying his sister. The fire descended and consumed the sheep but left the vegetables untouched. Qabil ultimately murdered Habil by dropping a stone on his head as he slept. Cause of first conflict: The lesson to learn here is that first conflict between the two brothers that resulted in murder happened because one of them didn’t want to obey the law given by their father who was a messenger of Allah. Extremism and moderation: If I were asked to define the subject terminologies, I would say that the violation of Allah’s law is extremism and moderation is simply obedience to His laws. Right way for mankind: [Quran 5:12 …… But after this whoever from among you adopted the way of disbelief, has indeed gone astray from the Right Way (sawa-assabil).]

Quranic term ‘sawa-as-sabil’ translated as right way is the way of life which enables a man to d e v e l o p harmoniously all his powers, faculties, and abilities: which satisfies all his cravings, urges and feelings an d t h e demands of his body and soul in a congenial manner: which guides him rightly to keep balanced the multi fold c o m p l e x relations with other human beings: which leads him individually and collectively to exploit and use equitably the natural resources for his own good and that of humanity. In short, it is that way of life which enables the individual and the society to solve spiritual, moral, social, physical, economic, political and international problems in a straight, smooth, even and just manner. It is obvious that man with his limited powers and intellect cannot by himself solve these problems, as he is simply incapable of comprehending at one and the same time all the aspects of human problems so as to weigh and estimate their relative importance and judge between the different courses before him. That is why, whenever he has tried to plan a way of life for himself, he has utterly failed to do justice to his own self or tiffs society, and made a mess of all his affairs and problems, and created a state of chaos everywhere. This is because with his narrow vision he becomes so absorbed in one basic need out of many and one problem out of many that he loses sight of all others and neglects them intentionally or un-intentionally. As a result of this, life loses its balance and begins to rush towards one extreme. When this state of affairs becomes unbearable, one of the neglected needs or problems takes hold of man and life begins to rush towards another extreme with the same destructive result. In this way, life goes on running from one extreme to the other and man never finds the balanced middle way which is "The Right Way", because all the ways planned by him keep him running in wrong directions from one extreme to the other. As has been pointed out, man cannot plan that right way which may lead him clear of the pitfalls of the myriad wrong and crooked ways; so Allah has very graciously made arrangements for showing the Right Way to mankind. He sent His Messengers with Guidance to lead mankind to the Right Way to real success in this world and in the Hereafter; and the one who loses this way will go wrong here and act wrongly, and inevitably go to Hell in the next world, for all the wrong ways lead to Hell.

Understanding Moderation and Extremism, Part-1 In this connection it will be pertinent to point out the blunder that has been committed by some so-called philosophers. When they noticed that human life was continually running between two extremes, they came to the wrong conclusion that the Dialectical process was the natural way of the evolution of human progress. According to them, internal contradictions are inherent in all things and the struggle between these opposites and their synthesis constitutes the contents of the process of development. They apply the Dialectical methods to the study of social life and come to the wrong conclusion that the same is the right way of evolution. Accordingly they start with a thesis of an extreme nature for the solution of a problem and go on rushing away from the Right Way towards one extreme till they discover, to their dismay, that in this process gross injustice has been done to some other equally important problems. Then they turn back with the antithesis of the first theory and presume that the synthesis of the two will help evolve its right

solution. Though it is true that the struggle between the two opposite theories helps them approach the Right Way, yet they cross it rapidly towards the other extreme because they do not believe in Divine Guidance which alone can make one firmly adhere to it. Then they do gross justice to some other problems and the same process is repeated over and over again. If such short sighted philosophers had not rejected God and religion and trade an impartial study of the Qur'an, they would have discovered to their joy that the Right Way is the straight path, leading to the human evolution, and not the myriad crooked and curved paths. Thus they would have saved mankind from continually rushing aimlessly between extremes. (Source: Tafheemulquran)

New Dawn is waiting for you Indian Muslim becomes speechless when someone points shortcoming of them. Muslim community living in India, ruled more than 700 years over India? The percentage of population which started with less than 20 percent remained that throughout the rule of this community. No planning for future, no planning for converting the Indian people into faith of Islam. There were numerous ways to convert the whole India into an Islamic nation. With sword, the whole of Northern India would be Muslim dominated. Who stopped the Muslim rulers to do so? Was there UNO? Was there Amnesty International? Was there European Union? Was there America? But this did not happen because Indian Muslim rulers never thought on that line. They were the God fearing people. They were the people who knew how to care for their subjects irrespective of caste, creed, colour, region etc. For them all the people were their subjects. And thus the entire history of 900 years of Muslim rules remained witness of no change in demographic domination of Muslims in India. With the mass level of conversion as it happened when ever Islam reached into Arab world( Syria, Iraq etc),Central Asia(Afghanistan, Azarbyzan, Turkmenistan etc) and Africa(Egypt, Libya etc). The reasons were the honesty of the rulers of India and the liberal tradition of Indian people. As a result, the peninsula of India did not witness the mass conversion of the people in Islamic faith. The relation of mutual respect and love for the religion with fear of God from both sides melted two communities different in culture, social set up, different political set up into a single community of diversity. This gave new strength to India. In spite of different political regions, cultural trends, sects, language etc the country emerged into a single entity known as India. This notion of India remained more or less till coming of the British. The British played a destructive role for the communities of India in general and Muslims in particular. They destroyed the very secular fabric of India in 1857, parted the paths of Muslims and other communities in post-1857 period. The community which was a ruler of all, turned into evil for all in 1947.History has never seen the largest migration of human beings, never seen the killing and destruction. After more than sixty years of discrimination, destruction of society, economy and religion in numerous riots all over India, the morale of Indian Muslims remains high. The reason was the attitude of all those people who remained secular like their forefather and the provisions of the constitution based on the call for welfare of all the people of India. The Indian Muslims were speechless due to their shortcomings. A large number of people of Muslim community are illiterate, a large number of people are unemployed, a large number of people living below poverty line, a large number of people are deprived from power gallery, and a large number of people are living under fear of tag of terror. And rest of the community is marginalized. In spite of all these short comings, the forefather of young Indian Muslims, worked as a labor in Middle East and played an important role in reconstruction of Arab world. They strengthened the relationship between India and Arab world. They are sending Billions of Dollars to India. Their sons and daughters are getting respected positions after educating themselves. The boon of education for Indian Muslims are manifesting in different forms. The time has come when new generation of youth must enter in the great field of central Asia and reconstruct this region for the welfare of humanity, for the start of new age. The time has come to prove the prediction of swami Vivekananda to put India in the service of humanity. The youth of Indian Muslims should move to the region of central Asia, settled down there and start serving the people of this region by expanding the trade and commerce, culture and people to people contact. They could help in expanding of Indian reach and benefit to the people of this region with growing economic power of India. Now let see what the youth of Indian Muslims do? Would they be ambassadors of peace and of India or would be mute spectators?

"A cup of yoghurt a day... is a way of keeping the doctor away." Research proves that yoghurt is not just a food Accompaniment, a dessert, or merely a diet food. There is growing Evidence to show that it is packed with microscopic warriors Beneficial bacteria that are essential for good health. It is also a nutritional goldmine. According to the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, a cup of yoghurt (250 mg) contains 370 mg of calcium (compare that with 300 mg in 250 ml of milk). This is 30-40 per cent of most adults' daily needs. Besides, at eight grams of protein per cup, yoghurt meets 20-25 per cent of an adult's average daily needs. It is also a good source of Vitamin B (including folacin) and phosphorus. And, a cup of yoghurt contains 250 mg of potassium - almost as much as a banana does. "If you want to have your own stockpile of B vitamins without having to buy them, eat yoghurt. By a strange chemistry, it sets up an efficient little factory in the intestinal tract and manufactures B vitamins for you," says Pratima Kaushik, chief dietician at the Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Delhi. Besides, yoghurt also provides lactic acid, which aids protein, calcium, and iron assimilation. For those on a low-calorie diet, yoghurt is a boon in any case. "Easily available anywhere, it is a snack that tastes great at any time of the day; it is low in calories and can be sufficiently filling when combined with a high-fibre vegetable or fruit," says Dr Shikha Sharma of Clinic de Rejuvenation, Delhi. The benefits of yoghurt go beyond its nutritional value and lowcalorie appeal. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, in an article published in 2000, says, "Increased yoghurt consumption may enhance the Bakhabar

fold. "A particular feature of vaginal infection is the reduction or absence of lactobacilli in the vaginal flora. Yoghurt is full of lactobacilli, hence the logic in its use," explains Dr Mridula.

immune response, which would in turn increase resistance to immune-related diseases." In addition, yoghurt plays an important role in restoring the digestive tract to its normal condition after a course of antibiotics. "The drugs often wipe out every bacterium in their path, good and bad, altering the natural balance of the digestive tract. When harmful bacteria dominate the intestine, essential nutrients are not produced and the levels of damaging substances like carcinogens and toxins rise. By killing the harmful `bugs', Yoghurt helps maintain a healthy balance of intestinal bacteria," Says Dr Mridula Chichra, a Delhi-based gynaecologist. In the Indian context particularly, doctors and practitioners of alternative medicine often recommend yoghurt to patients recovering from diarrhea, and help ease other intestinal tract ailments. Elixir for women Women stand to benefit immensely from yoghurt. For instance, women are often prone to vaginal candidosis, which causes itching and possibly a thick, white discharge. The risk of this infection increases during pregnancy, diabetes or when a woman is on birth control pills. "Eating yoghurt that contains natural bacteria and yeasts helps re-establish the Equilibrium," says Pratima. A study conducted by E. Hilton et al (Annals of Internal Medicine) in 1992 found that yoghurt consumption decreased vaginal infections three-

Then of course, there is osteoporosis, especially in women. Studies have shown that most people consume far less calcium than the recommended daily levels, which could cause osteoporosis. While there are many calcium supplements that are not readily or effectively absorbed, yoghurt provides an excellent source of easily absorbed calcium. That's not all. Daily consumption of yoghurt also helps improve complexion, making it more radiant. A word of caution, though. The fruited varieties of yoghurt are high in calories, even though it has a low-fat profile. "The jams and fruit concoctions added for flavour can dump in as much as seven teaspoons of sugar per cup and more than double the calories. So go easy on these, particularly when calories are a concern," says Dr Shikha. If you want a fruit flavour but do not want to lose out on calcium or gain calories, mix chopped fruit with yoghurt. You'll get all the calcium, and also the extra vitamins and fibre from the fruit. However, to be effective, yoghurt must contain sufficient amount of`live' lactic cultures, meaning it must be `fresh'. Make it at home, is Dr Shikha's advice. Or, when buying it, look for packing as close to the date of manufacture as possible to get maximum beneficial bacteria. She adds, "Always keep it cold, as the helpful bacteria in yoghurt cannot withstand high temperatures.

Dhule Violence: Changing Anatomy of Communal Violence Ram Puniyani The violence in Dhule Maharashtra seems to be the new face of communal violence in India. As per the report of a major national daily (Jan 26, 2013), the evidence with the newspaper shows the evidence of police looting and destroying the property. The video clips in possession of the civil society groups

also show one police official exhorting the rioting mob to move on. So far even if it was there it was not so blatantly clear. One sensed the partisan nature of police as discerned through different inquiry commission reports, but this type of role of police is a new and downhill chapter in the history of communal violence in India. Communal violence has been a major menace to our nation, from last more than a century, and more particularly from last three decades. Rise in communal violence can be correlated with the British policy of ‘divide and rule’. This policy was achieved by them by introducing the communal view of history through different books by British authorities. The communal version of history was taken up by the Muslim and Hindu communalists to suit their political agenda of opposing the political, social and economic changes which aimed at Liberty Equality and Fraternity. The communal forces spread hatred against the ‘other’ community, the result being that the communal perceptions started being Bakhabar

11

part of the ‘social common sense’, hatred for ‘other’ community became the foundation on which the communal violence took place or was orchestrated. This in turn strengthened the communal forces in different areas, and increased the levels of misconception for the ‘other community’. This parallel and opposite process went on till the tragedy of Partition, which was the biggest act of communal politics, the outcome of British policy of ‘divide and rule’. During British rule the communal violence was a communal riot. In this both Hindus and Muslims were pitched against each other in an i n h u m a n w a y, regarding; perceiving as if they are doing something for their religion. The political agenda of retrograde forces wore the cloak of religion. While communal forces made merry, the innocents suffered and the police took a neutral stance. They were trying to balance out without taking any sides while controlling these acts of violence. This neutrality of police started changing after Independence, when gradually the communalization of section of police force started taking place and its overall neutrality started getting eroded by the day, to the extent that later a section of police started helping violence in a pro active way. And over a period of time, those who are supposed and are duty bound to protect the innocent citizens, became partisan. Shooting the minority community members and throwing them in canals (Meerut Malyana 1987), or burying them in the field and growing cabbage over them (Bhagalpur 1989) was painfully observed. A whole ‘Riot mechanism’ gradually came up in which the communal forces

instigated, the so called secular forces looked on or subtly helped and the police took sides with majority community. At the same time the political leadership, bureaucracy, and police who are supposed to protect the innocent citizens, failed to do their assigned job and still got away without getting any punishment. This impunity gave a signal to them all that they can carry on with this game of marginalizing the minority community and reap the harvest of communal politics on the electoral arena. This ghastly situation is taking a further turn for the worst. And now it seems the communal forces and the communal foot soldiers are having an easy time as sections of police force are blatantly communalized. Police not only has become the active player in the game, police is shamelessly providing a cover to those indulging in violence. This painful fact comes to surface in the recent violence in Dhule, 6 January 2013, where over 40 people from the minority were shot above knee, in abdomen chest, neck face and back, out of which six died, three had to undergo amputation and remaining one’s are recuperating with serious injuries. The citizen’s inquiry committee which went to Dhule for fact finding was shocked out of its wits to find as to how the event which required a simple intervention from the police grew into the tragic incident. The mater was too trivial; the victim came to police chowkie to complain and with a request to intervene. Police constables on duty, apparently told the victim to go and settle the issue himself. The victim a Muslim auto rickshaw driver came with few more youth, the youth from other side also collected and stone throwing began. The clips, taken on video; show that the police acted as a cover for the Hindu mob which charged towards the Muslims. The police force also seemed to have begun to violate the police manual in letter and spirit. The mandatory loud speaker announcement, use of tear gas, lathi charge to be resorted before firing was done away with and a straight firing was

Dhule Violence: resorted to. The police training says the firing should be to disperse the mob, begin with firing in the air and then below the knee. In Dhulia the police thought it is a redundant exercise, so the firing was a targeted one, above the knee, above the waist, in abdomen, chest, face, neck and back. The victims who fell to the police bullet were left to be taken to hospital by friends and relatives. Police claims they were attacked seriously, acid was thrown on them. The civil hospital record shows that all the injuries suffered by police were minor. Some of them were admitted to hospital wards to show that they have been attacked seriously. No case of serious acid attack on the police, no case of serious injury, which requires hospitalization! The mob burns the houses; mostly those of Muslims, few Hindu households are also burnt. Police did not entertain any FIR of the victims. Next day morning the area is washed clean to wipe out some remaining evidence. Those wanting the FIRs to be filed were told that since they are themselves culprits of violence, filing FIR will go against them. A rumor was floated that combing operation will be done in Muslim areas. The victims in Hospitals take early discharge fearing that they will be charged as being the rioters in the violence. The civic administration did not set up any relief camp for those whose houses are burnt. Ration was distributed knowing fully-well that those whose houses are burnt cannot cook as all cooking vessels and utensils are burnt. The political leadership, Chief Minster and co. is apathetic and it takes them 10 days before driving down a distance of few hours to assess the situation, to address the woes of victims and to announce the much needed compensation. The compensation announced is meager for reasons best known to the Chief Minster. What trust the victims will have in such state machinery? A feeling of utter neglect and helplessness is prevailing amongst the victims. Some relief has been provided by the community organizations. That does not help the matters beyond a point. The violence in Dhulia comes in the backdrop of violence in Akot, Raver and other places in the region, over a short span of time. There is an urgent need for better relief, setting up of Police-Civic society Mohalla committee, sensitization of police in communal matters and to counter the misconceptions widely prevalent about the minority community. Who will undertake all these? Can Government think out of the box and take initiative in this direction? Who will get justice to the victims? And will the Central Government muster courage to bring in the Communal Violence Prevention Bill, which was presented in National Integration council. The draft bill can be modified by standing committee before finalizing. This bill should at least ensure that the section of political leadership, bureaucracy and police will not be spared for their acts of commission and omission due to which violence occurs and keeps simmering. -Response only to ram.puniyani@gmail.com

The relationship between the Book and its Reading! Dear brothers/sisters, Assalamu Alaikum. This is not a new post. As this is taken from a long article I wrote some years ago, alhamdulillah. The purpose of this post is to request all my dear readers to go through the points mentioned below, and share your thoughts about it or supplement it with other related points. Your participation, Inshaa’Allah, will help in the process of understanding and presenting things in a better way. I want to write more on this topic. Thought of doing it differently, and so I expect new ideas fromYOU. Jazakallahu Khayra. Vassalam. The very word with which the Last and Final Divine Book relates itself to inspires one to exclaim: Subhanallah! This undoubtedly is the Word of Almighty Allah! When we try to understand the meaning of the word “Qur’aan”, its richness tends to weave a tapestry in the canvas of one’s mind. The word “Qur’an” comes from the Arabic root Qa ra’a which means ‘he read, he recited’. It also means ‘the reading, the recitation’. The word is used in infinitive verbal form – and, quite obviously verb is nothing but action! The relationship between reading and the Book is quite interesting. Let us understand with the help of one example. The scripture of Judaism and Christianity is called the ‘Bible’ which means ‘Book’. The scripture of Islam is called the ‘Qur’an’ which means the ‘Reading’. Book is a product. Reading is a process. The utility of a book can be realized only when somebody reads it. Otherwise it will be a dead thing on a shelf. It comes to life or animation only when its meaning begin to work in readers’ mind. The book is a nonentity, meaningless, lifeless. Our Book has a name which lays emphasis on the process. The book comes to life only because it is read. What is to be read is the Qur’an! So in that way it establishes relationship with the Book. Subhanallaah! ———————NOW IT IS YOUR TURN TO SEND YOUR INPUTS, DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS. You can send your ideas/inputs/references etc. through comments section by 27th February, Inshaa’Allah. Send your inputs here, Inshaa'Allah Baarakallahu Lakum.

Vassalam. MuQeet Bakhabar

Falling in Love By Amatullah Kareem Just like in the movies, a hero would be assigned the mission to save the world and would go to a planet on a mission to destroy the enemies and retrieve a precious life-saving potion. But the enemies have a deadly weapon – an illusion. They show him a beautiful place with the woman of his dreams and he goes into a stupor completely forgetting his mission.

I was a typical teenager and believed in everything my friends did. I grew up reading magical fairy tales that always had a handsome prince falling in love with a princess and carrying her off into the sunset to live happily ever after. I watched Snow White and Cinderella that all focused on “falling in love” and “having a good life.” And I too grew up believing this is what life is all about. This is why we are here – to find the perfect soul mate and live happily ever after. Valentines Day would see all our friends discussing clandestine stories, gifts or cards or flowers from a secret admirer, declarations of long hidden love. Those who had no one would hope and wait for the next year. We all felt the compulsion to fall in love at least once – or face the prospect of having experienced nothing “exciting” in life. Most of us succumbed to this compulsion. Well all this was until one day I woke up. Yes, I woke up and came out of the fake world around me to realize that reality was much more vivid and lasting than its celluloid version. The culture of romanticism that had captured our hearts and brains was a ploy to keep us away from reality. Ironically, that too happened through a book. But it wasnt like any book I had read before. It spoke in a way that made shivers run down my spine, made me cry as if my heart would break, as if the words were coming not from a book because they struck so deep within my soul. It was the Book of Allah, my Creator. It was more powerful than all the fantasies I had been fettered with. I broke free at last. Today I dislike Valentines Day not just because it is an unIslamic, innovated celebration – and a lewd one at that. But because it is part of the culture of lust that has betrayed us all. That created in our impressionable minds a false image, that drugged us with the sweetest drug of romanticism, and made us forget the real reason why we are here in this world.

The planet is full of temptations and illusions that are projected according to his most coveted desires. He loses all track of time, even the fact that the world will be blown up any second and all that matters to him now will not exist anymore. Lost in an imaginary, transient world, he forgets his purpose and hence loses everything. Thats exactly what our greatest enemy has done. He has duped our minds into thinking that the images we see on TV are real, the glamorous lifestyles of superstars are achievable, the Valentines Day hotspots are desirable, the romance in tearjerker movies is the greatest and that we must have a huge amount of fun in this world because that is what will make us happy. While the clock ticks, Shaytan takes away our life before we can do anything productive with it. He has made us forget why we are here in this world and that our mission is like that of a space hero. What could be worse than that because it means we are losing the battle. We have laid down our arms and chose to watch “the reality show” while reality is passing us by. That is why we are told of a future scenario in the Quran: (The hypocrites) will call the believers: “Were we not with you?” The believers will reply: “Yes! But you led yourself into temptations, you looked forward for our destruction; you doubted (in Faith); and you were deceived by false desires, till the Command of Allah came to pass. And the chief deceiver (Satan) deceived you in respect of Allah. (Quran, 57:14) I thank Allah that He gave me a husband who taught me the true meaning of love and caring for the sake of Allah. This kind of love transcends all boundaries of space and time and is truly everlasting as it continues even after death into the next life. There is no happily ever after yet, because we are still in this world of test and deception.

OUR JOURNEY TO THE DAY OF RESURRECTION PART-XIX Gheyas S Mahfoz Hashmi, Jeddah (hgheyas@albatool.com.sa) … Continued from Jan 2013 issue The next stage is “Qantarah”. It is situated at the end of the Sirat (Bridge) connected to Jannah (Mazhari). Believers will be stopped here before entering Jannah in order to settle their personal issues. Since Paradise is a place where illfeelings and misunderstandings have no meaning, the people of Jannah will be purified here. These may not be actual enmity or hatred but due to differences of opinion on issues. According to some narrations, they will reach a stream of water, and will drink from it. By drinking, all malice and ill-feelings of their hearts will go off forever. So, they will enter Jannah as brothers. Its brief description is mentioned in Quran (Al-Hijr/47 & AlAraf/43). After reciting these verses Ali bin Talib (R) said, “I hope that we - Uthman, Talha and Zuba and me – shall be among those whose hearts will be cleaned of malice before entry into Paradise”. (Ibn Kathir). The Prophet (S) said, “When the believers cross the Hellfire, they will be stopped at a small arched bridge (Qantarah) before entering the paradise and will be given retribution for injustices between them until they become purified. (Then) they will be permitted to enter Jannah. So, by the One in Whose Hands is my soul, they will know their way to their homes in Jannah, better than they know their ways to their homes in Dunya.” [Bukhari at the authority of Abu Sa’eed Al Khudree). The Prophet (S) said ,”There will be two men from this Ummah that will come before Allah (ST). One man will say, “so and so has transgressed against me and I want from his good deeds.” Allah will tell him, “do you see this great palace in paradise?” And the man will look at the palace, and Allah will say to him, “it will belong to you if you forgive your brother today.” And the man will forgive him. Rasulullah (S) said at the end of this hadith “Safeguard yourselves from Allah, and reform and reconcile amongst yourselves, indeed Allah will reconcile between the believers (Hakim). … to be continued, Allah willing.

My friend’s* Question: What about the millions of animals that are needlessly slaughtered in the name of God during Bakri-Id? When God permitted Abraham to sacrifice a ram instead of his son, he did not ask all people to do this every year. Why can it not be changed in more civilized times? Explanation, that I forwarded: First of all using the word “needlessly” is not correct. It is not that the animals are sacrificed just for fun. The meat is consumed. So it cannot be called needlessly? Everyday so many animals are slaughtered or killed for use as food. Is there any difference between daily slaughter/killing and slaughter on Idul Azha (Baqraeid in India)? There is no difference. But there is a big difference in purpose. On normal days the animals are slaughtered/killed for profit. On Baqraeid there is no motive of profit. Only those who nurture the animals get profit. Thousands of families survive on the income they get by selling the animals and remember they get much higher price during Baqraeid as compared to normal time. In the market mutton is about Rs 250 to 300 per kg. Even if one wants to buy 200 g, the cost will be Rs 50/60. A family which earns Rs 100 a day cannot afford by any means. On the occasion of Baqraeid they get the meat as charity and they enjoy the same for at least three four days. Now let us come to the purpose. There are several verses in the Qur’an on this subject. I am quoting only one. ٰ‫ﻟَﻦ ﻳَﻨَﺎﻝَ اﻟـــﻠﱠﻪَ ُﻟﺤُﻮﻣُﻬَﺎ ﻭَﻟَﺎ دِﻣَﺎؤُﻫَﺎ َﻭﻟَـٰﻜِﻦ ﻳَﻨَﺎُﻟﻪُ اﻟـــ ﱠﺘﻘْﻮَﻯ‬ ۗ ْ‫ﺨﺮَﻫَﺎ ﻟَ ُﻜﻢْ ﻟِﺘُﻜَ ّﺒِﺮُﻭا اﻟـــﻠﱠﻪَ ﻋَﻠَﻰٰ ﻣَﺎ ﻫَﺪَا ُﻛﻢ‬ ‫ﺳﱠ‬ َ َ‫ﻣِﻨــ ُﻜﻢْ ۚ ﻛَ ٰﺬَِﻟﻚ‬ َ‫ﺤﺴِﻨِﻴﻦ‬ ْ ‫ﺸِﺮِ اﻟْ ُﻤ‬ ّ ‫ﻭَ َﺑ‬ It is not their meat nor their blood that reaches God. It is your piety that reaches Him. He has thus made them subject to you, that ye may glorify God for His guidance to you. And proclaim the good news to all who do right. Qur’an 22:37 Undoubtedly, Allah is interested in only testing the piety of people. In another verse (22: 36), it is clear that the meat of the sacrificed animal is not only for

those who perform the sacrifice. It is also for the poor. In fact the suggested and preferred practice is that the meat be divided into three parts. One part is kept for the consumption of the family, which performs the sacrifice. One part is for relatives and friends, especially those who are not in a position to do the sacrifice. The purpose is that they too get opportunity to enjoy the delicacy. The third part is strictly for poor but not for professional beggars. That is how the poor get the meat at least on those days. In the second and third parts i.e. for friends/relatives and for poor there is no restriction that it can be given to only Muslims. Now the question is why only on the occasion of Baqraeid there is so much talk about the sacrifice and ‘animal welfare’. Reason is our media. Also, some irresponsible Muslims contribute to that. Everyday so many animals are killed/slaughtered. But media do not pay any attention. On the occasion of Baqraeid they never miss the opportunity just because it is fanciful and more so because it is connected to Muslims. On Dussehra, Sarhul, Holi and so many other occasions and also, in so many temples on normal days, large numbers of animals are killed by nonMuslims. But there is no news. Also, there are some ‘Muslims’ who are interested in showing off their wealth. They purchase goats at exorbitant price and then they stand with them, get photographed and give interviews for newspapers and TV channels. It becomes fanciful news for the media. In fact it is totally against the teachings of Islam. Islam totally prohibits showing off in anything, including prayers.

Sacrifice on the occasion of Baqraeid is a kind of prayer. Hence, it should not be made a matter of show. Also, in case of charity it is best that it should not be made public, until there is some special need. The suggested course is that if the right hand gives, the left hand should not know. Obviously, people who indulge in show of wealth are not performing their duty. They want name and fame. As a result, the purpose is defeated. (*The friend is a non-Muslim and she is Professor of History in Chennai) At times, non-Muslims pose a question related to Baqraeid (Eid-ul-Azhaa). Why not give money to poor people in lieu of sacrificing animals and giving meat? The answer is simple. First, Allah has clearly ordered for sacrifice and there is a reason behind the same. Moreover, if money is given, there will be various problems. First, there will be difficulty in determining the exact amount. Second, there is strong possibility of mismanagement. All of us are aware of the mismanagement of funds in drought relief, flood relief, tsunami/cyclone relief etc. If money is given, there is no guarantee that the same will be used for food. I shall narrate one incidence from my own experience. About a year back on one of the Fridays I found a person outside the mosque. He was begging and for that he was using his child, about a year or so old. The child had a large wound on his head and he had few empty bottles and ointment tubes beside the child who was lying on the ground. Obviously, people were giving him alms freely for treatment of the child. He asked me as well and explained that he was not having money for treatment of the child. I asked him to accompany me. About 20 m from the mosque there is a medicine shop. I took them there and asked the shopkeeper to give the best possible medicines for the wound. He gave. I deliberately asked the shopkeeper to

7 steps to great relationships 1. Respect People Always talk to people with respect; speaking to them like you want to be spoken to. Be kind in your words and actions. Think before you speak, because once the words leave your mouth, they can't ever be taken back. Your words may be forgiven, but they will never be forgotten. When you speak harshly to someone, you put a small crack in that relationship. Too many small cracks and the relationship will crumble.

2. Be Loyal and Trustworthy Be the kind of person that can always be counted on to do the right thing. Never do anything to betray that trust. Always be honest, and always temper your honesty with kindness. Let them know that they can always lean on you, and even their deepest secrets are safe. If you don't have trust in a relationship, you don't have anything to build on. "A friend is one who walks in when others walk out" ~~ Walter Winchell

3. Put Others First – Be a Friend I know it's not easy, but you need to put the needs of others first. By that very act you show how much you care, and how important that relationship is to you. When you enter a relationship with a heart that puts others first, you are blessed by the fruits that are grown from such an act. By showing a genuine interest in others, you show yourself a friend, and gain loyal, lifelong friends to yourself. As Dale Carnegie said, "You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you. "The only reward of virtue is virtue; the only way to have a friend is to be one." ~~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

4. Don't Try and Be Someone You're not Always strive to be your best self, but never try and be someone you're not. Relationships built upon lies and distortions will never stand. Real friends are honest and upfront with each other. If you want to have a real friend, then be a real friend. Part of being a real friend is being yourself. If you want to impress someone, impress them with your kindness and friendship.

5. Don't Take People For Granted I think this act probably causes more hurt, resentment, or weakening of friendships than any other. We go from enjoying someone's company, really appreciating all the things they do for us, and thinking about how great they are for the things they do. Then, let a little time go by, and we stop acknowledging the good things about them. We come to expect certain things that we considered special at one time. Don't do it, it's a relationship breaker. No one wants to be taken for granted.

6. Be Forgiving What if the one being taken for granted is you? It hurts to feel like you're not appreciated. If we aren't vigilant in caring for our relationships, these things can easily happen. That's why it is important for us to look at others like Christ looks at us, with compassion and forgiveness. Be sure to talk to the person taking you for granted. Don't let it build inside until the relationship is destroyed and irreparable. If they're a true friend they should apologize and be willing to change that. Another trick to great relationships is good communications, and not holding grudges. Be forgiving as Christ is forgiving.

7. Be Positive and Encouraging I love being around people who are positive and encouraging. It brings out the best in me and causes me to want to be positive and encourage to others. Can you think of a better emotional boost than to help put a smile on someone's face? Dwelling on and being discouraged over problems will do nothing to make them better. We need to acknowledge the problem, tell that problem it's not going to define us, and then get to working finding a solution. When someone you care about is down and hurting, you getting depressed with them will do nothing to help. What you need to do is show them compassion, be empathetic, and let them know you're there for them. Then you need to lift them up. Help them to see some of the wonderful things about themselves and their life. Sometimes people just need to be reminded that they're special, and we believe in them even when they quit believing in themselves.

Question about... open the bottles, tubes. My purpose was that the person should not be in a position to resell the medicines. I told him to apply the medicines regularly. I know that I could have got rid of the person by giving him one or two rupee coin. But I knew that would not help the child. For about six months or so I did not find the person again in our locality. Few months back I found him again with the same child. It was a surprise that the wound was as before and he was begging again by showing the wound to the people coming out of the mosque. I found one person taking out his wallet to give him money. I immediately stopped him and narrated to him about the earlier incidence. I suspect that the person did not apply the medicine. The wound on the head of the child could bring sympathy and consequently worked as a money spinner. Obviously, he was not interested in getting the child cured. I am confident that the money that he collected was used for everything else than treatment. We are aware of the fact that people visit various Dargaahs to feed the poor. There are specialized food outlets which ‘feed’ the ‘beggars’ and the beggars are readily available there. ‘Devotees’ have to pay to the outlets and instruct how many beggars are to be fed. Those outlets provide tokens, which the devotees distribute and leave the place happy that they arranged food for so many ‘poor persons’. But no sooner the devotees leave, the ‘beggars’ return the tokens to the outlets and collect money. No doubt they get the money after some cut. But they are happy as they make quite substantial money every day. In Delhi, Nizamuddin Dargaah is known for it. The beggars there are totally professionals and permanent. Further, most of them are drug/alcohol addict. Suppose if someone provides food item/s which cannot be sold, they will have to consume the same. In the process others in the family will also get some share. But we want to trade on easiest path. That is why this kind of practice is thriving. If we distribute cash on Baqraeid, the money will be misused. When meat is given, the same has to be consumed and more importantly the entire family has the opportunity to enjoy the meat. ***********

Media “institutional bias” USA, Russia, Japan, against the Muslim Europe including community France and Germany “If I was the mastermind, then why are the others still in jail?” A day after his release from jail, 26-year-old journalist Muthi-urRahman Siddiqui has accused the police of harbouring an “institutional bias” against the Muslim community. “If I wasn’t Muslim, they would never have held me [on charges of being part of a terror module],” he said at a packed press conference here on Tuesday. Barely able to conceal his resentment toward law enforcement agencies and sections of the media that branded him as the “mastermind” of a terror module, Mr. Siddiqui said: “The media and the police need to be more sensitive toward the downtrodden, Dalits and Muslims. The way the media and the police behaved raises basic questions about their attitude toward Muslims. Muslims are often cast by them in stereotypes. There is an institutional bias which manifests in such cases. This is not just about me; it is about hundreds like me who are in jails [across the country] on terror charges. Muslims are not terrorists.” He said, “The media forgot the ‘A’ in the ABC of Journalism [Accuracy-Brevity-Clarity].” Mr. Siddiqui was arrested by the Crime Branch of the Bangalore Police, along with 14 others, in August 2012 on charges of plotting to assassinate prominent Hindutva leaders as well as some journalists. The National Investigation Agency, which later took over the case, found no evidence against either Mr. Siddiqui or Yusuf Nalband in their charge sheet. Pleading the case of the other 13 still in jail, Mr. Siddiqui said, “According to the [Bangalore] police and the media, I am the mastermind. If I am the mastermind, why are the others still in jail? I hope they too will get justice.” He said journalism was his passion and he wanted to continue. Asked if he would sue the police, he said, “I haven’t thought about that. I want to spend time with my family first.” He also alleged that the police did not follow protocol during his arrest. “They did not inform our families. They did not tell us what we were being arrested for. They made us sign 30-40 blank sheets of paper. One of these papers was used to create fake, back-dated arrest intimation.” Mr. Nalband (28), the technician who was released along with Mr. Siddiqui, was reticent during the press conference. He later told The Hindu, “I could not sleep the whole of last [Monday] night. I had all kinds of thoughts. I am not sure if life will be normal again. I am hoping I can get back to my life, God willing.” He also alleged that the Hyderabad police, who assisted the Bangalore police during the arrests, forced the accused to wear Islamic skull caps before taking them out of the house where they were arrested. “I don’t know why they did that,” he said. http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/karnataka/mediapolice-should-be-more-sensitive-toward-dalits-muslimssiddiqui/article4456305.ece

Sir Syed of modern India By Syed Zubair Ahmad,

to cherish his dream at his own.

lucky like him. So he is fighting alone.

When I heard about the achievements of Mahbubul Hoque I wanted to meet him at the earliest opportunity. Recently

With his old computer which he brought from Aligarh he started a batch of 4 students who were enrolled at Sikkim Manipal University in 2001. At the same time he started assembling computers and selling them in extra time. The same year he sold over 100 computers. The number of students kept increasing every year. In 2002, 28 students, in 2003, 128 students, in 2004, 236 students, in 2005, 450 students, in 2006, 1300 students, in 2007, 2200 students, and in 2008, 3500 students took admission in his Central IT College.

Last year when the Bodoland violence left lakhs of Muslims homeless Mahbubul came in new Avatar. He started working tirelessly for the educational rehabilitation of the homeless children who were living in relief camps. More than 35,000 students were affected by the violence of which 13,000 were school going children. Under the educational rehabilitation programme organizations and philanthropists were invited to support those children through sponsorship, financial aid, adoption, establishing residential schools for girls, establishing industrial training institute, and coaching and guidance centers.

he was in Delhi to receive an award. When I reached his hotel room to meet him I got elated and surprised. He is the real heir of Sir Syed in look and deed. A true Aligarian literally and virtually. He had a dream like Sir Syed and got that dream materialized. After finishing his study at Aligarh Muslim University, he reached Guwahati with his old computer and within ten years he established University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya. Born on December 1, 1973 in village Purbogool under Patharkandi of Karimganj district of Assam, Mahbubul Hoque did his matriculation from Karimganj with star marks, HS (Science) from G.C. College, Silchar, B.Sc. (Hons) & MCA from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) securing first class 2nd rank in the year 2000. Although he had lucrative job offers in multinationals & IT industry, but he started his career as an Educational Entrepreneur. He started Central IT College with one computer & 4 students in the year 2001. He managed finance by assembling computers which was sold in the market to establish a computer lab which is now the 2nd largest center in India under SMU having enrollment strength 3000+. After completing his MCA from AMU he wanted to start an Engineering College and went with his proposal to many community entrepreneurs but Mahbubul didn’t get positive response. Then he changed his mind and decided Bakhabar

His dream of establishing an IT college was materialized. But he had the dream of Sir Syed. In those years he kept on striving to establish a university. Meghalaya was more suitable for him to materialize his dream. Eleven km away from Guwahati he acquired the land for the university and in 2008 Meghalaya government approved his university and he became the founder of University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) and nominated as Chancellor of the University by the Governor of Meghalaya, the Visitor of USTM. The USTM has been established in 350 acres of picturesque landscape which is situated about 85 km from the capital of Meghalaya, Shillong and about 11 km from capital of Assam, Dispur. Mahbubul Hoque The university was approved but Mahbubul had not enough money to start the academic session. He had to take loan of Rs 10 crore from the bank for the construction of the building. Who’s who of the community visited his university but no one offered him any kind of help. Like Sir Syed he has also developed many ailments due to mental strain. But he is quite hopeful that after 5-6 years he will overcome his financial problems. Sir Syed got support from lots of Muslim Nawabs and Muslim masses in general. Unfortunately Sir Syed of our time is not

For Mahbubul Hoque 'Life and wealth are gifted to us by the Almighty for doing good deeds and to serve the society for which we are answerable on the Day of Judgement'. Being the true heir of visionary Sir Syed, Mahbubul says we the Aligarians can establish one university every year at our own. Can’t 50000 of us donate 10000 annually? Can’t we establish a university in 500 crore? Is it impossible for us? But the problem is we have no vision. In my last article 'I am proud of Sir Syed but not a proud Aligarian' I had said I do not find pride in being Aligarian. But after meeting with Mahbubul I can say I am not a proud Aligarian but I am proud of this Aligarian. I hope that day will come when I would say I am proud of Sir Syed and I am a proud Aligarian too. Achievements of Mahbubul Hoque in brief He is the Founder Chairman of ERD FOUNDATION (Education, Research & Development Foundation) established in the year 2005. Founder & Chairman of Regional College of Higher Education, Guwahati, a professional College affiliated to North eastern Hill University, Shillong Founder & Chairman of Regional

Addressing the students, Br. Ahmadullah Falahi told that enjoyment is also necessary along with education, but entertainment should be helpful in education; wandering here and there without any aim and objective is of no benefit. In these activities we lose precious time as well as money, which is a great loss to students. There is a great significant of entertainment form Islamic point of view. Quran gives us an instruction that we should search the signs of Allah on earth, by visiting places, like these – rivers and mountains. Different people take entertainment for different aims and objectives. But, we should search the signs of Allah in rocks and mountains, and wonder how Allah did make them; and how Allah arranged the plants and trees for us! This picnic program is held on the remote and river side, away from habitation. The program has been concluded at 5:30 pm with dua.

Importance of the verses of Qur’an in “Khutba” recited at the time of AQD (NIKAH) We frequently attend Aqd (Nikah) ceremony of our relatives, friends, neighbours etc. Generally, we consider the attendance a formality and on several occasions I have seen people talking to each other when the Khutba is recited. Many of the relatives and friends are busy in taking photographs or making video etc. People wait for the Dua to finish so that they may congratulate the groom, the parents and relatives of the groom and the bride for the accomplishment. Also, the groom and parents of the bride and the groom are not careful to listen to the Khutba. Even if they listen, not many understand the meaning of the words recited in Arabic. After all Arabic is not our language and even if we learn Arabic, we learn only to read. The purpose is reciting the Qur’an. Most of the time, we do not bother about the meaning of the verses of Qur’an that we read. As a result, we rarely understand what we read. No doubt, reciting Qur’an brings “sawaab”. But the purpose of Qur’an is not to earn only “sawaab”. Qur’an provides us the knowledge and guidance needed to lead a successful life. In the absence of understanding the meaning, we are unable to utilize the lessons given in Qur’an. Anyway I started with the Aqd ceremony. I should come back to that. We rarely realize that the Khutba includes two verses of Qur’an. The verses are from the Surah “Al-Ahzab”. The verses are: 70 and 71. The verses and their English translation are copied below: ۰۰۷۰ ‫ﺳَﺪِﻳْ ًﺪاۙﻗَ ْﻮﻟًﺎ ﻗُﻮْﻟُﻮْا ﻭَ اﻟــّٰﻠﻪَ ا ﱠﺗﻘُﻮا‬ ‫اٰﻣَﻨُﻮا اﻟﱠﺬِ ْﻳﻦَ ﻳٰۤﺎَﻳﱡﻬَﺎ‬ O ye who believe! Fear Allah, and make your utterance straight forward. That He may make your conduct whole and sound and forgive you your sins: he Bakhabar

that obeys Allah and His Messenger, has already attained the great victory. The first verse says that the Muslims must fear Allah and they must be careful while making any utterance. As such Muslims are always expected to be careful while saying anything. But inclusion of the verse in the Khutba has its own significance. When the groom and also the bride give their consent for Nikah, they must be careful and they must not take it lightly. The matter involves the future of two families. It is a promise which they make considering Allah’s presence there. They are supposed to keep the promise and fulfill the obligations whole life. Only if there is divorce, that too according to the Qur’an, they become free of the responsibilities but only after fulfilling their responsibilities related to divorce as directed by Allah and the Prophet (SAW). The second verse assures that Allah will forgive the sins of Muslims who obey Allah and the Prophet (SAW) and make their life easy by way of right conduct. Also, they are being assured of “Great victory” i.e. salvation. The question is why this verse is included in the Khutba? I understand that it was done to relate to their conduct in married life. Muslims are supposed to behave in responsible manner in their married life and they are not permitted to go astray in any way. Qur’an and the Prophet (SAW) give complete guidance about the same. They must understand the

responsibilities attached with the marriage and fulfill the same always and in all possible manners. If we understand these two verses and follow them, many of the problems which we experience in the society will not be there. For example, the question of “Jahez” (dowry) is not at all permissible in Islam. In fact the groom is to pay the bride the “Mehar”. But Muslim grooms and their parents are indulging in dowry demand in one way or the other. Different types of excuses are invented for the same. Similarly, the wives are not serious towards their partners. They argue unnecessarily, haggle on petty issues and create problems in the family. Many a times they are not ready to live with their inlaws. They want to have separate establishments. They are not bothered about who will take care of the old parents of the husbands. If the two partners and their family members realize the value of these two verses included in the Khutba, these and similar other problems will never be there. I have one suggestion for the Khateebs. They may explain the meaning of the Khutba in the language people present there can easily understand. Then the actual purpose of the Khutba will be served and it will not be a mere formality. Our Ulema may consider this point.

Hanging of Conscience: Case of Afzal Guru The semi secretive hanging of Afzal Guru (Feb 2013) has come as a shock to some and as a feeling of triumphalism for many. Afzal Guru was hanged in early hours of morning and was buried in the prison yard. His mercy petition, which was pending with the President for long was finally rejected and even before the family of Afzal Guru could get a chance to appeal against the turning down of plea for clemency, Guru was hanged. While the ethical questions pertaining to death penalty are heavy on the conscience of many in the society, this is not regarded as the part of ‘collective conscience’ which has guided the judgment of Supreme Court and later the President turning down his petition for clemency. The section of society which thought that Guru’s sentence itself needs to be questioned also does not seem to form the’ conscience’ of the nation! Kashmir valley was totally insulated from the news and TV c h a n n e l s gagged. The restive mood of the people led to the death of some. In the absence of the p r o p e r information, rumours are doing rounds and what disastrous consequences it can have needs a serious thought from the rulers in the corridors of power. Many a questions have been raised due to this hanging. Why hanging and why at this time? Guru was one of the accused in the case of assault on the Parliament on 13 December 2001, in which, eight security personnel and one gardener were killed. Guru was not found to be part of any terrorist outfit, nor did he play any direct role in this attack. Supreme Court noted that there is no direct evidence of Guru’s involvement. The evidence was mainly circumstantial. All three courts including Supreme Court had acquitted him of the charges under POTA of belonging to either a terrorist organization or a terrorist gang. Court also noted that the evidence was fabricated. At worst Guru was facilitator in the crime and not a part of directly perpetrating the crime, and the evidence against him was mere circumstantial and that the police lied about the time and place of arrest, fabricated evidence including arrest memos and extracted false confessions. Court noted that Guru was not a member of any banned organization, Court ruled "The conviction under section 3 (2) of POTA is set aside. The conviction under section 3 (5) of POTA is also set aside because there is no evidence that he is a member of a terrorist organization, once the confessional statement is excluded. Incidentally, we may mention that even going by confessional statement, it is doubtful whether the membership of a terrorist gang or organization is established." Further that since "The incident, which resulted in heavy casualties, had shaken the entire nation and the collective conscience of the society will only be satisfied if capital punishment is awarded to the offender." So does it mean that the punishment is being given to assuage the collective national conscience? One must add what is presented as this conscience is the consciousness of the section of dominant sections of society, the assertive social-political groups in particular. The conscience manufactured by the likes of VHP, Bajrang Dal and company, have come to be labelled and accepted as national ‘collective conscience’ by many, It is these groups who are who are celebrating the death of Guru, exhibiting their triumphalism.

Ram Puniyani

In their petition to the President of India, many social activists and academics point out “The fact that the Court appointed as amicus curiae (friend of the court) a lawyer in whom Afzal had expressed no faith; the fact that he went legally unrepresented from the time of his arrest till his so-called confession, the fact that the court asked him to either accept the lawyer appointed by the Court or cross examine the witness himself should surely have concerned you while considering his mercy petition.” His personal history of being a surrendered militant, victim of harassment and torture at the hands of STF, as well as his statement in open court that he had indeed helped Mohammad, one of the attackers on the Parliament, find a house and obtain a car, the same car used in the attack, but at the orders of his STF handlers, should have spurred a full-scale investigation into the allegations. The citizens of this country do not know if one was ordered at all.” The base on which Supreme Court gave the judgment was built by the police with methods which are questionable, which have also been reprimanded by the court in this case. The argument on the other side was that if Guru is not hanged it will be an insult to those who have laid their lives for defending the parliament While Supreme Court deserves all the respect, one has to see that the primary investigation done by the police, with all its flaws formed the base of the judgment. When that investigation itself had holes in it, should it be accepted as it is presented? When the primary culprits are either dead are some of them absconding, can 'the whole truth be out'? Or is it that somebody has anyway to be punished to quench the thirst for revenge, and who better than the one who has a Muslim name and happens to be from Kashmir. The whole trial of Afzal needed to be relooked; the flaws of the investigation, the weakness of and deliberate violation of norms by police authorities in particular. The question which comes is why the other assassins, the one’s of Rajiv Gandhi and the Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh are being given a different treatment? The assemblies of Punjab and Tamil Nadu have passed resolutions against death penalties for these people, who were directly involved with the acts of assassination. The whole issue boils down to as to how Indian state has treated the Kashmir issue and how terrorism and Muslims have been associated in the popular thinking. This thinking has been deliberately promoted by the communal forces in the country. A section of media has played a very negative role in promoting the divisive thinking in the society. Section of media has acted as spokespersons for the police versions of investigation. So the ‘collective conscience’ is the common sense asserted by communal forces and imbibed by the others. It does reflect the state of our democracy overall. Can we call ourselves as a democracy and indulge in minority bashing; being high handed in matters of justice and citizenship rights in cases of the vulnerable minorities. Kashmir had been limping towards better situation during last few years. While alienation amongst large section of Kashmiris remains deep set, there have been indications that people may reconcile to new situation, if democratization process in Kashmir is strengthened by and by. This hanging of Afzal Guru reminds one of the hanging of Maqbul Butt in 1984, which set the trail for a phase of enhanced militancy. One hopes that such an adverse thing should not happen this time. But still we need to take the issue of protest in Kashmir in a more balanced way. Congress should not join the game of aggressive jingoism launched by BJP and its affiliates. Such cases of yielding to the religious nationalism, promoted by BJP and company will surely be a recipe for disaster for the process of normalization and democratization in Kashmir. The communal mind set should not be allowed to rule the roost.

Maulana Azad Foundation gets only Rs 1 lakh Maulana Azad Foundation gets only Rs 1 lakh out of Rs 100 Cr allocated in 2012 Email | Print | Created on Friday, 01 March 2013 22:45 0 Comments and 0 Reactions By Muslim Mirror News, New Delhi, March 1: The announcement of Rs 160 crore for Maulana Azad Education Foundation in the Budget 2013-14 presented in Parliament yesterday must have pleased many in the minority community but the expenditure document of the Finance Ministry tells that the community should not be much happy. Not many budgetary announcements are implemented in full, and when it comes to announcements about minority welfare, hardly any of those announcements are implemented. The latest Expenditure Budget published by the Ministry of Finance shows that in the Budget 201213, the government had announced Rs 100 crore as grants-in-aid to Maulana Azad Education Foundation, but, hold your breath, just Rs 1 lakh – that is 0.1% of the allocated fund—was released. What will be the fate of the allocation made in the Budget 2013 for the Azad Foundation can be guessed.
