Measuring the environment performance of our products throughout their life cycles In 2004, products emblematiic of BIC, which also accounted for the highest sales (BIC® Cristal® ballpoint pens, BIC® Classic shavers, and BIC® Maxi lighters), were evaluated by outside experts from the agency, O2 France. In order to better anticipate emerging market trends, BIC also had some of its new products assessed. In 2005, BIC decided to “in-source” its approach, to measure the environmental impact of existing products and of new pens and shavers. Principal steps in the production and quality control of BIC速 lighters
1 Base and Body
These are plastic; ultrasonically welded together. They comprise the fuel tank.
Valve
The subassembly that releases a constant level of fuel, permitting a constant flame of predetermined height.

3 Jet, Fork and Fork Spring
These components control the opening and closing of gas coming from the valve. Releasing the fork automatically stops the flow of gas from the valve. The jet/globe seal subassembly is quality checked using a sophisticated camera vision system.
4 Ball
Seals the fuel tank after it is filled.
5 Flint and Flint Spring
The flint spring applies pressure to the flint to generate sparks.
6 Sparkwheel
When the sparkwheel, which is made of serrated hardened steel wire, is rotated with sufficient speed and force, it creates a spark.
7 Hood

What is ISO 9994 standard? ISO 9994 is an international safety standard for manufacturing a lighter. The requirements stated is intended to ensure a reasonable degree of safety for normal use. Lighters which do not comply with this safety specifications will posed a danger to the public and the environment. ISO 9994 standard is intended to reduce these potential hazards to lighters users. The safety specification applies to all flame-producing products such as cigarette lighters, cigar lighters and pipe lighters.
Importance of a safe lighter that complies with ISO 9994 standard: • Preventing the risk of burning the face or hair from a excessive flame height extinguished from a lighter • Able to extinguish effectively without the risk of causing fire • Preventing the risk of a lighter bursting into flame resulting from an overfilled lighter when temperature increases

At least 85% of children under 51 months of age should not be able to operate these lighters.

Major steps in production and quality control of BICÂŽ shavers
1 The blade 1. The steel strip is first perforated to determine the form of the blade. 2. The steel strip then goes through a hardening process. 3. Then the strip is ground to a razor’s thin edge. 4. First surface treatment: Platinum/ chromium coating is applied to the shaver blade. 5. Second surface treatment : a PTFE (poly tetra ethylene) coating is then deposited onto the shaver blade to enhance its performance.
2 Molding the plastic parts Handle, guard, cover and blade protector. 1. Colored plastic materials are blended together in
preparation for injection mold.
2. After injection, the plastic parts are cooled, ejected
and ready for assembly.
3. Handle can also be manufactured through
coextrusion process.

ASSEMBLY
The shaver’s head is made up of two plastic components. For heads with fixed blades, the blades are placed between spacers.

For heads with moveable blades, the blades are independently placed on individual springs. All the components are automatically assembled. The lubricating strips are placed on the cover. The head is then affixed to the shaver’s handle.
4 Quality The blade, molded component parts and finished product are all visually and dimensionally checked throughout the entire manufacturing process.
