Introduction to the subject

PRESENTATION Inglés Turístico II is a 6 credit basic subject, and it is taught in the second semester of the first year. It is part of the programme of the Degree in Tourism. Inglés Turístico II follows on from Inglés Turístico I. The conception of this subject is based on the consolidation and broadening of the skills and knowledge acquired in Inglés Turístico I. Just like Inglés Turístico I and Inglés Turístico III, this course is part of what is known as English for Specific Purposes, in particular, English for Tourism. This is why every unit deals with an area or topic related to the tourism world presenting different situations in which the language used is analysed and practised. This subject is based on a pragmatic approach to the language, so it is an essentially practical course. The theory, whether it be grammar, lexis or phonetics, is dealt with through clear explanations together with numerous examples. On some occasions, the theory might even be reached through the practice, which means that some exercises are devised to help the student observe a certain feature in a segment of language so that a specific use of the language can be deduced (‘consciousness-raising activities’). The practical nature of this course is also shown by the large number of exercises included in every unit, whose aim is, both to check the full understanding of the previous explanation and to practise that aspect of the language in order to facilitate its acquisition and assimilation. Besides, the activities presented at the end of each unit also insist on this last point, as they allow both the teacher and the student to check the level of understanding and acquisition of the content in question. All the units include several exercises to practise listening comprehension and pronunciation. This is why this book comes with an audio CD containing all the recordings necessary for those exercises. Besides, one of the compulsory activities under assessment is a listening comprehension while another is an activity of oral expression. The general goal of this subject is that students should acquire the capacity to use the English language correctly and appropriately according to the context in different communicative situations. That is to say that they should achieve the adequate communicative competence to be able to manage specific situations similar to those dealt with in the units without difficulty. These situations belong to the areas and topics studied, namely the hotel –its facilities and

services–, some tourist services, tour operators, travel agencies, different cultures of the world and handling complaints in all these sectors. OBJECTIVES OF THE SUBJECT Within the didactic framework described above, the development of the theoretical and practical contents of this subject pursues the following formative objectives: • Basic objectives – To use the language correctly and appropriately in different communicative situations. – To master English grammar at an upper-intermediate level (B2). – To correctly use the vocabulary and most frequent expressions in some sectors of Tourism: travel agencies, hotels and tour operators. – To be able to communicate correctly in specific situations belonging to the sectors of travel agencies, hotels and tour operators (B2). – To understand and write letters and other documents related to those sectors (B2). The content of the subject is divided into six units. Each one revolves around a specific sector of Tourism and deals with the grammatical, textual, cultural, lexical and phonetical content related to it. At the same time the language skills are practised, especially written expression and interaction, listening comprehension and reading comprehension. These contents tackle the following generic descriptors stated in the guidelines of the degree (memoria del título): – Hotel facilities: describing and comparing different types of accommodation; the adjective and types of adjectives, prepositions of place and comparative patterns (Unit 1). – Hotel services: car hire, foreign exchange, giving information, use of the passive voice (Units 1 and 2). – Tour operators: their role, the tasks and differences between them and travel agents; fam trips; modal verbs (use and grammatical rules) (Unit 3). – Difficult situations: handling oral and written complaints; should have done; intensifying adverbs (Unit 4). – Cultures of the world: British and American cultures and linguistic differences; linking expressions that express contrast and similarity; relative sentences; description of the weather (Unit 5). – Travel agencies: booking, selling and changing tickets, selling package holidays; documents and letters used at travel agencies; organising itineraries; tag questions, so and such; adjectives ending in –ing and –ed (Unit 6).
