Favorites

Dreamspinner Press knows that there is more than one LGBT narrative. Their books are varied in genre, language and age of the protagonist. The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered characters in their books are complex and lovable, and they stick with the reader long after reading. Here are some of my favorite LGBT books from Dreamspinner Press.

1. Little Boy Lost Series

Brian McAllister is the boy next door. In Crayford, Alabama, he is known as a responsible, good kid, but Brian loves his best friend, Jamie, in a more-than-friends kind of way. Their forbidden relationship goes against everything their Southern town believes. Brian and Jamie quickly became favorite characters of mine. I was captivated by their complex love affair, and I devoured all six books.

2. Suspense and Supernatural

I escaped into the world of LGBT suspense and the supernatural novels. Some of the books in this collection took me to new realms, while others reimagined the world we live in today. One of my favorites was Peter’s Chair, about a new pope who approves birth control and demands equal rights for gays. The Pope’s decisions cause much controversy, and not just on earth— the Devil himself is in Saint Peter’s Basilica.

3. In Sickness and In Health

Critical injuries, challenging disabilities, crippling addictions, fatal diseases and even death itself are key components of these books. These stories do not shy away from difficult topics, and I loved the vulnerability of the characters. Whether the protagonist was the sick one or whether it was their love interest who was not well, their struggles were relatable, realistic and captivating.

Nikki Palazzo, the Training Manager at BiblioLabs, much enjoys chatting with librarians during her online training sessions and basking in the abundance of quirky eyeglass frames at conferences. In her free time, she writes and reads YA lit and waits, ever-patiently, for her Hogwarts acceptance letter.
