Whole Love BLUEWATER PRODUCTIONS’ MUSICIANS GRAPHIC NOVELS

I’ve grown up surrounded by music and books for as long as I can remember. There’s nothing more relaxing than crankin’ up some tunes at the house or unwinding as your favorite song comes on the radio after a long day at work (“Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” comes to mind). And who doesn’t love a good read? So what could be better, then, than a combination of the two? Recently, I had the pleasure of discovering Bluewater Productions’ musical comics series, which is based on the stars of ours and recent generations. Although their publications range far and wide and cover many musicians, any comics or graphics novel fan is sure to enjoy their selection of artwork and stories based on the lives and experiences of a varied group of entertainers. Bluewater has full-feature comics covering hit bands and performers such as One Direction, Justin Bieber, 50 Cent, Drake, Psy, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Cher, Madonna, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Briteny Spears, Demi Lovato, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, The Beatles, James Dean, Whitney Houston, and many more, including some of my personal favorites, like Prince, Keith Richards and The Pink Floyd Experience. Tonight, I’m going home, putting on some “Travelling Riverside Blues” and paying homage to one of my all-time favorite bands and musical influences: Led Zeppelin. At 158 pages, their biographical comic is no joke; my evening will be long. But when faced with such good tunes and engaging reading, “Hey, Hey, What Can I Do?”

: s e x o B h t i Mad Men W MEET DOCTORS ONE THROUGH ELEVEN By Nikki Palazzo

“You want weapons? We’re in a library! Books! The best weapons in the world!”

So said Ten, a.k.a “The Doc-tuh.” So it is only fitting that Bluewater Productions wrote a weapon—I mean book—about Doctor Who. The Cast of Doctor Who is great for fans wishing to relive their favorite moments from the world of Doctor Who. Just like the TARDIS, the book takes you back in time (or should I say through the big ball of wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff) all the way to the series’ beginning in 1963. For fans like me, who first picked up their Sonic Screwdriver with the ninth doctor, it’s great to get to know the earlier doctors through quick biographies of the actors’ careers up to the moment they took on the famous role. This book addresses the fandom at large, even incorporating fun facts about the (admittedly not canonical) movies.

Nikki Palazzo, the Training Manager at BiblioLabs, much enjoys chatting with librarians during her online training sessions and basking in the abundance of quirky eyeglass frames at conferences. In her free time, she writes and reads YA lit and waits, ever-patiently, for her Hogwarts acceptance letter.

BLUEWATER Favorites

Bluewater Productions is dedicated to pairing high-quality art with innovative storytelling. Bluewater provides a wide variety of intellectual properties that engage a growing readership and bridge the gap between comic books and the diverse multimedia marketplace. Bluewater’s smash hits include 10th Muse, Misadventures of Adam West and The Legend of Isis, among others. Read below for a short list of comics Darren Davis, the head of Bluewater Productions, personally recommends from the Bluewater canon.

1. Bluewater Biographies

Growing up, I was a very reluctant reader. We hope to reach kids in similar situations that may be more apt to read when a comic book is placed in front of them. The Bluewater informative biographies are the perfect thing for these situations. I’ve taught in schools myself and have found comic books an excellent way to reach children.

2. Wrath of the Titans

As a kid, I loved the classic film Clash of the Titans. It was a dream come true to get to work side-by-side with the creator of the film, Ray Harryhausen, on this comic. We developed a new storyline for what happens after Perseus saved Andromeda. Ray Harryhausen is still an inspiration to people like George Lucas and Peter Jackson today.

3. S.E. Hinton’s The Puppy Sister

I ask people all the time if they know who S.E. Hinton is. I am still shocked when people do not get who she is right away. After creating my favorite YA novels—The Outsiders, Tex, That Was Then This is Now— she also developed a line of kids’ books. We have turned these literary gems into graphic novels for a new generation.

Zombie Comics are Alive (...Again):

ALTERNA COMICS’ NY TIMES BEST-SELLING COMIC SERIES

By Jessica Duggan To me, there’s nothing better than sitting in my favorite reading spot on a quiet evening, sipping some hot chocolate, petting my dog and cracking open a few comics about the grisly undead wrecking havoc on the unsuspecting living. I most recently discovered Alterna Comics’ FUBAR, a New York Times best-selling comic series set during the WWII as we know it, where “the only thing we have to fear, is fear itself...and zombies.” Readers follow soldiers through various historic battles, the ways of the new zombie world and how different characters are coping with the dead rising. It’s alternate history meets ZomCom,

meets classic comic books. What’s more, if you’re not careful, you might just learn a little something about WWII history while you’re at it. All thrills, chills, zombie Nazis and brrraaaiiiinnnnssss aside, FUBAR offers comics and zombie lit lovers what we’re always after: the terrifying, repulsive, flesh-hungry characters who embody that deep, dark something that everyone fears. All in all, a great one to curl up   with and sink your teeth into. Jessica Duggan is the Editorial Manager at BiblioLabs in Charleston, SC. She has over 5 years of experience in the publishing industry. She enjoys grilled cheese, reading and all things science fiction. Comics & Graphic Novels 7

Ancient Japan, Animé Eyes and Toba Sojo: A BRIEF MANGA EXPERIENCE By Lynn Yib The tradition of narrative art through sequential images has been a part of Japanese culture centuries before Superman creators even dreamed of putting the Man of Steel in a cape. Primitive (or “pre-manga”) Japanese artwork dates back to the 11th century with a series of depictive scrolls attributed to a one Toba Sojo. Toba’s influence became so wide spread that a style of visual humor and storytelling that gained immense popularity in the 18th century came to be known as Toba-e or “Toba pictures.” Early manga would not stop there. Gaining steady popularity through children’s stories, political satire and more, manga began to take on Western influences towards the start of the 20th century. The characteristic wide animé eyes we all know and love became a staple during this time. Today, it’s amazing how prevalent this ancient art form is, both in Asia and in other parts of the world. eigoMANGA is a publishing company based in San Francisco, California. Their Japanese-influenced comic

books embody everything that English speakers love about the ancient storytelling method, from the wide eyes and playful plots to the right-to-left reading style of the Japanese. One of my favorites I’ve recently discovered is The Frog Princess, where marine biologist Larissa Talcott (the eponymous “Frog Princess”) works to protect a small pond and its amphibious inhabitants. But her moral lines are blurred when she falls in love with Brian, an attorney who works for a law firm that wants to build a commercial building over Larissa’s precious pond. Will Larissa compromise her beliefs for her relationship? Find out with this and other manga comics over 1,000 years in the making. Lynn Yib is on the Publisher Relations team at Bibliolabs. She has over 8 years of experience in the publishing industry. Lynn enjoys traveling, Crossfit, the beach, wine and a good book—not all in that order. Comics & Graphic Novels 11
