THE LARGEST JSM CRUSADE: RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL CLASSIC CRUSADE: SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1987

THE JIMMY SWAGGART CRUSADE that drew the largest audience was held at the Maracana soccer stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in October 1987. Although modest estimates counted the crowd the last day of the three-day crusade at 125,000, photos show a full Maracana stadium which at that time seated nearly 200,000. In a message titled “The Last Days,” Brother Swaggart preached from Matthew 24:3: “And as He sat upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples came unto Him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?” Holding his Bible high in the air with one hand and a microphone in the other, Brother Swaggart told the massive crowd that the most dangerous hour the church had ever known was at hand. He said, “You must stay anchored in the Word. If the preacher preaches something that is not in this Bible, don’t listen to him. Don’t follow him. Do not heed him. The Word must be paramount. The Word is the foundation. Hallelujah. He said, ‘On this rock, I’ll build My church.’ The Rock is Jesus, and Jesus is the Word. ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God.’ This will stand. Communism may go down, but this will stand. Democracy may go down, but this will stand. It is the Word of Almighty God. Preach the Word. Preach the Word. Preach the Word. Preach the Word. Preach the Word! Your only anchor today is this Bible.” A few months later, in his “From Me To You” column in The Evangelist, Brother Swaggart wrote this about the crusade in Brazil:

Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart preaching to a full Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1987.

Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I walked into the stadium Friday night for the opening of service in the midst of a torrential rain. It had rained all day, and I’m talking about hard rain. The Spirit of God more than compensated for Satan’s efforts to hinder. Because of a soccer game, the Sunday service had to be moved from its regular 2:30 p.m. starting time to 9 a.m. When I gave the altar call that Sunday morning, the people literally ran to the front. An electrifying move of the Holy Spirit swept through that stadium as multiple thousands came to Jesus Christ. The New York Times ran a picture of Brother Swaggart preaching this Rio de Janeiro crusade as part of an article titled, “In Brazil, Evangelicals Are On Rise.” The article centered on a spiritual shift that was taking place in Brazil during the 1980s. Reporter Alan Riding wrote: With 140 million inhabitants, Brazil is the world’s most populous Catholic nation. Yet the number of evangelical communicants here has almost dou-

bled to about 12 million since 1980, while another 12 or 13 million people regularly attend evangelical services. About 2,800 American Protestant missionaries work in Brazil today, and dozens of different United Statesbased churches and missions are represented here. American preachers frequently come through; earlier this month, the Rev. Jimmy Swaggart drew a huge crowd at Maracana soccer stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The engine behind the growth has been the aggressive proselytizing of fundamentalist sects that spread their message of salvation on special radio and television broadcasts, in booklets on street corners, in markets, on buses and at soccer stadiums. Their emphasis on personal religious experiences, such as receiving the Holy Spirit, prophecies, miracles and speaking in tongues, has proven particularly appealing to the innate spirituality of millions of poor urban Brazilians. In many barrios, Pentecostal churches now routinely draw larger congregations than nearby Catholic churches.

ONE MINISTRY. ONE MESSAGE. 60 YEARS.

THE GREAT CONTEST

By Jimmy Swaggart

I Kings 18:33-35 — “And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood. “And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time. “And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.”

This states to us that everything about the Cross was and is according to the Word of God. This tells us that the Word of God is the foundation and the criterion for all that we do.

6 SEPTEMBER 2015 THE EVANGELIST

THE WATER WAS A type of the Word of God.

THE TIME OF THE EVENING SACRIFICE

I hope it is obvious here that everything was saturated with water. In fact, even the trench that had been dug around the altar was filled.

“And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice” (I Ki. 18:36).

This states to us that everything about the Cross was and is according to the Word of God. This tells us that the Word of God is the foundation and the criterion for all that we do. Again it states that what Jesus did at the Cross was all according to the Word of God, and according to the Word of God entirely. Pouring the water three times over the sacrifice signifies to us that the Word of God is backed up by the entirety of the triune Godhead. It also tells us that the Word is incumbent upon each member of the Godhead, even as each member of the Godhead is incumbent upon the Word. Jesus said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Mat. 4:4).

Two sacrifices were to be offered at the temple each day, the first at 9 a.m., and the second at 3 p.m., with the latter referred to as the evening sacrifice. This was to be done seven days a week. Actually, on the Sabbath, which was Saturday, instead of one lamb being offered in the morning and one lamb in the afternoon, the number was doubled. Jesus was put on the Cross at about 9 a.m. He died at 3 p.m., the time of the evening sacrifice. So, all of this tells us that what the Lord did here was a portrayal, a picture if you will, of that which would be carried out by His Son when He died on the Cross. Of course, Elijah would have had no knowledge concerning a Cross, nor would he have known that Jesus would die on the Cross at the time of the evening sacrifice, but, of course, God most definitely did know all of this.

THE

JIMMY SWAGGART

PRICELESS CORNER We have set aside this corner of The Evangelist to show God’s Plan of Salvation. If you are unsure where you will go when you die, please listen to what God has said in His Word:

The idea is, the Lord was trying to bring Israel back to the altar, i.e., back to the Cross. In effect, He has always been doing this, even as He is doing such presently.

GOD OF ABRAHAM, ISAAC, AND ISRAEL Elijah said, “Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel” (I Ki. 18:36). Why were these three individuals so special that their names would be linked with Jehovah?

FIRST: GOD LOVES YOU! “For God so loved the world that he gave His only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have Everlasting Life” (Jn. 3:16).

SECOND: MAN IS A SINNER, AND SIN HAS SEPARATED HIM FROM GOD “For there is not a just man upon Earth, that doeth good and sinneth not” (Eccl. 7:20). “For all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God” (Rom. 3:23).

THIRD: JESUS CHRIST IS THE ONLY REMEDY FOR SIN

One word explains it: faith. At the time of these individuals, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Israel and Jacob are one and the same), other than these three families at their respective times, the whole world lay in spiritual darkness. They alone knew God, and they alone believed God.

“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God ...” (I Pet. 3:18). “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under Heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

FOURTH: YOU MUST RECEIVE JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR PERSONAL LORD AND SAVIOUR

First of all, the Lord revealed Himself to Abraham. As to how this was done, the Scripture is silent. At that time, Shem, one of Noah’s sons, was still alive and may very well have been serving God. Some believe that Shem was actually Melchizedek; however, there is no proof of that. At any rate, at that time, the only ones in the world who knew God were Abraham and Sarah, very probably some of Abraham’s servants, which definitely included Eliezer of Damascus (Gen. 14:17-20; 15:2), and a few others such as Melchizedek.

Jesus calls this experience the new birth. He told Nicodemus: “... Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God” (Jn. 3:3).

As the revelation had been given to Abraham, it was handed down to Isaac, the son of Abraham and Sarah, and then to Jacob, the son of Isaac and Rebekah.

»»In the Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His Virgin Birth, in His Sinless Life, in His Miracles, in His Vicarious and atoning Death, in His Bodily Resurrection, in His Ascension to the Right Hand of the Father, in His personal future return to this Earth in Power and Glory to rule a thousand years (Jn. 1:1-4; Eph. 2:13-18; Rev., Chpts. 19-20).

At that time, they were the only people in the world who were monotheistic, meaning they worshipped one God, i.e., Jehovah. The balance of the world was polytheistic, meaning they worshipped many gods, in actuality, demon spirits. So, it was faith that caused these individuals to stand out, and to be certain, faith is the same principle presently (Rom. 5:1-2).

We invite you now to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour. “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name” (Jn. 1:12).

WE BELIEVE: »»The Bible is the inspired and only infallible and authoritative written Word of God (Ps. 119; Mat. 4:4; Lk. 24:27). »»There is one God, eternally existent in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (I Jn. 5:7).

»»In the Blessed Hope — the Rapture of the Church at Christ’s Coming (I Thess. 4:13-18). »»The only means of being cleansed from sin is through Repentance and Faith in the Precious Blood of Christ (Rom. 5:1; Eph. 2:8-9, 13-18). »»Regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for personal Salvation (Jn. 3:5-8; Titus 3:5). »»The Redemptive Work of Christ on the Cross provides Healing of the human body in answer to believing prayer (Ex. 15:25-26; James 5:14-15; I Pet. 2:24).

THE FIRE OF THE LORD FELL At the beginning of this contest, Elijah had said to Ahab, plus all of the false prophets of Baal, plus the entirety of Israel that was gathered at Mount Carmel that day, “Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: “And you call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord: and the God who answers by fire, let Him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken” (I Ki. 18:23-24). The fire was a type of the judgment of God that was poured out on the sacrifice instead of that judgment being poured out on Israel. This typified Christ and what He would suffer at the Cross. As we’ve already stated, the only thing that stands between mankind and the judgment of God is the Cross of Christ. I Kings 18:38 says, “Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.” [CONTINUED ON PAGE 8]

»»The Baptism with the Holy Spirit according to Acts 2:4 is given to Believers who ask for it (Acts 2:4; 10:44-46; 19:1-7). »»In the Sanctifying Power of the Holy Spirit by Whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a holy life (Rom. 6:3-14; 8:1-2, 11). »»In the Resurrection of both the saved and the lost: the one to Everlasting Life and the other to everlasting damnation (Rev. 20:5-6, 11-15).

Pray this prayer and mean it with all of your heart: “Dear “ Lord Jesus, I now realize that I am a sinner. I accept the fact that You died for me on the rugged Cross of Calvary. I now open my heart’s door and receive You as Saviour and Lord of my life. Please take full control of me and help me to be the kind of Christian You want me to be. Amen.” If you prayed this prayer in all sincerity, you are now a Child of God. So that we might rejoice with you, we invite you to fill out this coupon and mail it to Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, P.O. JIMMY SWAGGART [CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7]

When the fire fell, it consumed everything, in effect, leaving nothing. This tells us that Calvary paid it all. No sin was left owing. The judgment was total, meaning that Christ paid it all.

is in anything other than Christ and the Cross, then, in essence, what they have is another Jesus, which fosters another spirit, and which plays out to another gospel (II Cor. 11:4).

Unfortunately, far too many in the modern church hypocritically seek to punish those who have failed, seemingly never realizing that Jesus has already suffered such punishment. For such to be enacted, in essence, says that what Jesus did at the Cross was insufficient. This is a gross sin! We must never forget that the “fire of the Lord” consumed everything — the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and even the dust, and “licked up the water that was in the trench.”

This episode with Elijah and the people of Israel tells us that God could be understood only in the sense of the Cross, i.e., the altar. It is no different presently (Jn. 3:16)!

Seven is God’s number of perfection; in other words, the rain that was coming would be in proportion to God who was sending it. Even though the Lord had promised this, we find that Elijah had to persevere. This should be a lesson to us; if we ask and we do not receive, we ought to keep asking (Lk. 11:6-13).

THE LORD, HE IS THE GOD

Of course, these Israelites, who had been worshipping Baal for some years, were now made to realize in stark reality that Baal was not God, but rather “the Lord, He is the God.” The fact that the name God has the definite article preceding it, making it read “the God,” tells us that, in essence, they were saying that there was no other god. Jehovah alone was God! However, it must be understood that God, i.e., Jehovah, could only be recognized by and through the means of the Cross, i.e., the altar. The Apostle Paul addressed this very thing, but in the New Testament sense, by stating that if the faith of believers

THE RAIN OF THE SPIRIT The people had been directed back to the Cross, of which the altar was a type, and now the rain of the Spirit could fall. Before the Holy Spirit can work, the church must come back to the Cross; there is no other way!

With all the water being licked up, this portrays the fact that the Word of God was fulfilled in totality. As stated, absolutely nothing was left owing. Such was and is the Cross of Christ!

When the fire fell, the Scripture says, “And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The Lord, He is the God; the Lord, He is the God” (I Ki. 18:39).

especially considering that the majority of the modern church is apostate. The light always exposes what the darkness covers. That which the light exposes must be exterminated, which the Holy Spirit in one way or the other will definitely do, at least for those who truly want to follow the Lord.

If the faith of believers is in anything other than Christ and the Cross, then, in essence, what they have is another Jesus, which fosters another spirit, and which plays out to another gospel. — The Apostle Paul

THE PROPHETS OF BAAL “And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there” (I Ki. 18:40). This is one of the reasons that the Cross is so despised. It exposes false prophets, and not only exposes them, but puts them out of business. When the Cross of Christ is held up as it should be held up, all false doctrine goes out the window; all false apostles will stop short; all error is laid aside; and the Cross exposes it all. That’s the greatest reason that the Message of the Cross is not so very much appreciated,

THE SOUND OF AN ABUNDANCE OF RAIN When the Word of God becomes preeminent, with Calvary once again becoming the center point of all that is done, then the spiritual drought will end, and there will be an “abundance of rain.” As we have stated, the great drought in Israel, which had lasted now for some three and a half years, was meant to be a portrayal of the spiritual condition of the nation. The rain falling in copious amounts was a type of the Spirit of God being poured out, which brought the thirsty land back to life again, as only the Spirit of God can do. There was not merely rain that fell, but an abundance of rain. This meant that the earth soaked up the rain, which could then once again grow grass, with the trees doing the same regarding their leaves. The [CONTINUED ON PAGE 10]

10 SEPTEMBER 2015 THE EVANGELIST

What blasphemy is brought forth when men say that the church needs a new way, a new message, and a new presentation! No, the church needs to go back to the old paths. It needs to come back to the Cross. The church that is truly of God does not function according to the ways of the world. That which makes the world go has no bearing whatsoever on the church, and actually, if employed, will destroy the church, which is happening presently. The church functions solely upon the moving and operation of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit works totally and completely within the confines of the finished work of Christ. So, this means that the believer must place his faith exclusively in the Cross of Christ and not allow it to be moved. With that being the case, the rain will fall in abundant amounts. As well, this that the Lord did portrays to us the fact that if some few people will go God’s way, which is the way of the Cross, beyond the shadow of a doubt, there will be an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. In fact, this experience with Elijah and the fire falling from heaven should give hope to any and every individual, irrespective of the difficulties or the problems.

HUMILITY The Scripture says of Elijah, “And he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees” (I Ki. 18:42). Elijah had just seen one of the greatest demonstrations of power that the world had known up to that time, and it had humbled him. It was now time for the rain. The Lord had promised it. He had said some months earlier, “Go, show yourself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth” (I Ki. 18:1).

JIMMY SWAGGART

The answer of Elijah was actually the answer to every pulpit, every church, every home, and every problem that plagues our lives. Why is it so hard for us to do this? Why do we seek everyone’s opinion and not God’s knowledge? If we do seek His face, too often it is with a haughty attitude, denying all humility. God will not accept our pompous attitude. The church desperately needs revival. This verse (I Ki. 18:42) tells us how to have it. In essence, we need to cast ourselves down upon the earth and put our face between our knees. While the posture is not that important, what it represents is most definitely very important — it represents humility.

FAITH EXCLUSIVELY IN CHRIST AND THE CROSS The Holy Spirit through Simon Peter said, “For God resists the proud (He sets Himself in array against the proud person), and gives grace to the humble (one who places his faith exclusively in Christ and the Cross)” (I Pet. 5:5). As the rain was dependent upon the Cross being held up as the only solution for mankind, likewise, humility is addressed in the same capacity. It is impossible for anyone to know humility unless he properly understands the Cross. The Cross of Christ is the very epitome of humility. In fact, there could be no greater example. So, when the believer begins to place his faith exclusively in Christ and the Cross, he will begin to understand a little bit about humility. Otherwise, such isn’t possible!

SEVEN TIMES “And (Elijah) said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times” (I Ki. 18:43). This verse portrays faith. It says, “Go again seven times.” Regrettably, about the greatest admittance of the modern church is the admittance of the servant when he states, “There is nothing.” We have been compromised in our faith, being led to believe that if we snap our fingers, God is to do it immediately. If it’s not done, we quit, being taught that it’s not faith to continue. That is unbiblical. No, it doesn’t take the Lord long to do anything, but it takes us awhile to be brought to the place and position desired by the Holy Spirit. Elijah was one of the greatest men of God who ever lived, but the Lord would teach even Elijah something in this episode. He would be taught a valuable lesson on the grace of God.

SEVEN TIMES SPEAKS OF A PERFECT WORK “Seven times” speaks of God’s fulfillment and completion. It speaks of a perfect work, a work that He desires to do within our lives. In other words, if we ask and the answer is not immediately forthcoming, we must not quit. In fact, faith, that is, if it’s true, will not quit. What did Jesus say? “Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves (a meager request); “For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? (We as believers must give the message of eternal life to all of mankind, but the truth is, within ourselves, we have nothing to give). “And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you (an obvious denial). “I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needs (the argument of this parable is that if a sufficiency for daily need can by importunity, i.e., persistence, be obtained from an unwilling source, how much more from a willing giver, which and who is the Lord).

EVERYONE “And I say unto you (telling us how to approach the Lord for whatever we need), Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you (all of this speaks of persistence and guarantees a positive answer, at least if it’s in the will of God). “For every one who asks receives; and he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks it shall be opened (he says ‘everyone,’ and that includes you!). “If a son shall ask bread of any of you who is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? “Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him (an egg containing) a scorpion? “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children (means that an earthly parent certainly would not give a child a stone who has asked for bread, etc.): how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them who ask Him?” (Lk. 11:5-13). This refers to God’s goodness and the fact that everything from the Godhead comes to us through the person and

agency of the Holy Spirit; and all that He does for us is based upon the Cross of Christ and our faith in that finished work.

A CLOUD THE SIZE OF A MAN’S HAND “And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there arises a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand” (I Ki. 18:44). It must ever be said that what looks like only a “little cloud” to the unbeliever, the doubter, and the skeptic is, in fact, that which with faith can mean a coming deluge. My grandmother taught me a most valuable lesson. I can see the twinkle in her eyes even yet. She said to me, not once but many times, “Jimmy, God is a big God, so ask big!” I have never forgotten that. It has helped me touch this world for Christ. However, we must remember that that which concludes “big” many times, if not most of the time, starts out small. It is only at the beginning, “a cloud the size of a man’s hand.” True faith knows that it is only the beginning, which, if God has His way, will ultimately conclude with something great. The Lord, in fact, does nothing but that which is great. Don’t quit asking, don’t quit seeking, and don’t quit knocking.

A GREAT RAIN “And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain” (I Ki. 18:45). One can sense the presence of God even as one reads these words, “a great rain!” Spiritually speaking, our nation desperately needs this great rain. As well, spiritually speaking, untold millions of believers, myself included, need this great rain.

A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE When the Lord began to open up to me the Message of the Cross back in 1997, it was like a dream come true. The freedom that this great truth brought to me was unexcelled. And yet, it’s not something new but that which was given to the Apostle Paul, which he gave to us in his 14 epistles. However, after a little bit, negative thoughts began to come into my mind about the necessity of the message. The Devil said to me that while some few may need this message, virtually the entirety of the church is doing pretty well. Looking back, it is so easy to recognize the Evil One, but at the time, dressed as an angel of light, he seemed to be plausible.

SEPTEMBER 2015 THE EVANGELIST

I did not reveal to anyone what I was feeling in my spirit, but the Lord was very soon to address it. Donnie was preaching. It was Sunday night at Family Worship Center. He wasn’t preaching about Moses and the deliverance of the children of Israel from Egypt, but in the course of his message, he made the statement uttered by Moses to Pharaoh, “Let My people go.”

LET MY PEOPLE GO When he said that word, “Let My people go,” the Spirit of God came all over me. I began to weep, actually sobbing, and the Lord spoke to my heart, and what He told me was not very pleasant to hear. “My people,” the Lord said, “are in the same condition presently as the children of Israel were in Egyptian bondage.” To be sure, that’s a powerful statement. To think that the modern church is in the same shape as Israel of old, respecting Egyptian bondage, is beyond our comprehension. In other words, it’s about as bad as it could ever be. The Devil had almost made me believe that while the Cross was definitely necessary, still, the situation was not so desperate among God’s people. However, that night, the Holy Spirit let me know that the church world is in the same condition, spiritually speaking, as Israel of old as it regards her terrible condition of so long, long ago. In other words, they were slaves to an evil taskmaster, and the Lord demanded, “Let My people go.” For a few minutes that night, I saw the entirety of the church world. I saw the bondage, and I saw untold millions who are being held captive by Satan in one way or the other, and I’m speaking of God’s people. In other words, as the situation was dire in Egypt at that time, at least as it regarded the people of God, likewise, it is dire at this time. In fact, the situation is far worse than even I know. The only answer is the Cross of Christ. There is no other! The church desperately needs a great rain of the Spirit.

VAIN IMAGINATIONS by frances swaggart II Timothy 3:1-5 – “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”

Transgenders are quickly growing in number and acceptance as they take their places in the newly defined 'civil rights' movement in America, emboldened by that power of example the president mentioned.

TWO DAYS BEFORE THE U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states, President Obama made this statement in the East Room of the White House at a reception honoring Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month: “In just the past year, America has come far in its acceptance of transgender Americans. And we’ve got brave folks coming out at the highest levels of business and government, and in sports and in Hollywood. We’re seeing television shows portray transgender characters and families. And the power of example is slowly but surely changing people’s hearts.”1 Sadly, the president is right. Acceptance of the transgender lifestyle — and the LGBT agenda — is accelerating in America.

POWER OF EXAMPLE Transgenders (people who live out a gender identity different from the one they were born with) are quickly growing in number and acceptance as they take their places in the newly defined “civil rights” movement in America, emboldened by that power of example the president mentioned. In April, more than half of the nation applauded Bruce Jenner’s public admission as a transgender — a lifelong transformation, he said, from

14

a male U.S. Olympic champion to the physical appearance of a woman. His decision to share this experience on prime time television was hailed in the media as courageous and heroic. According to Nielsen ratings, nearly 17 million viewers tuned in2 to watch Jenner’s exclusive interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC's 20/20. “I would say I have always been confused by my gender identity since I was this big,” Jenner said, lowering his hand a few feet from the floor. Then he gave Sawyer the same explanation that he gave to his own children regarding the struggle with his gender. He said, “God’s looking down, making little Bruce, okay? He’s looking down and He says, ‘Okay, what are we gonna do with this one? Make him a smart kid, very determined,’ and He gave me all of these wonderful qualities. And then at the end, when He’s just finishing, He goes, ‘Wait a second, we gotta give him something; everybody has stuff in their life they have to deal with, you know? What are we gonna give him?’ And God looks down and chuckles a little bit and goes, ‘Hey, let’s give him the soul of a female, and let’s see how he deals with that.’”3 Jenner’s perception of Almighty God is sad and sarcastic, but, more importantly, it is untrue. God is not confused or spiteful, and neither does He put wrong souls into wrong bodies.

The Bible says, “God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.” (Gen. 1:27) Still, Jenner’s celebrity status empowered countless others in the transgender community to step out and use the media to tell the positive sides of their stories. One of the most shocking stories I found in different news sources was about a 7-year-old child who was born a boy, but has been living as a transgender girl since the age of 4. Think of that. The following is an excerpt of this story told in this child's own words on a YouTube video: When I was born, doctors said I was a boy, but I knew in my heart I was a girl. So I may have some boy body parts, but that’s not wrong; that is okay. When I was in preschool, I could play dress-up and I loved it because it made me feel really happy because I got to wear girl dresses so I could just be happy. Sometimes I play like I’m an animal or a ninja or a princess, but that doesn’t mean my mom and dad should treat me like it; like it’s just make believe. Even though I was a girl, I was afraid to tell my mom and dad because I thought they would not love me anymore and they would throw me out and stop giving me any food or anything. Finally, I had to tell my mom and dad I was a girl because it was just really frustrating that I could not hold it in, and it was so hard to not be who I really was and have them treating me like a boy when I really was a girl. My mom and dad brought me to doctors and the doctor said it would be all okay as long as they let me be a girl. When I started to dress like a girl in preschool, my friends were cool with it, but their parents weren’t, and they thought it was contagious like ‘transgender pox’ or something. I decided to quit preschool because it was better to be myself and lose all my friends than keep pretending. I got to pick new clothes and grow my hair long and my new friends know me as the girl I am in my heart and brain. I did trampoline, gymnastics, dance, 4-H, tae kwon do, Girl Scouts, and more. I’m just a normal girl and I got to dye my hair—three times. There’s still some people that don’t understand and are scared because I’m a little bit different, but we want to fix that! Some people say that I don’t get to go in the right bathroom or go to the right restaurants, but who

cares about my body parts? I don’t ask what’s in your underwear! Being transgender is a hard thing, but you can be who you want to be. I’m proud of who I am because I’m transgender and I am a girl. I’m just a normal girl — your average everyday normal transgender girl. The words of this confused child — and his determination to “fix” the attitudes of those who don’t understand his decision to live as a girl — show just how deeply the sin of transgenderism is rooted in this country, ensnaring even our youngest generation. Yet however positive the confessions of those who defend this gender confusion may be, their stories are in direct conflict with the Word of God. In Romans 1:21 we read: “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”

Yet however positive the confessions of those who defend this gender

A DIFFERENT STORY So from a 7-year-old’s point of view, living as a transgender may seem elementary, harmless, and easily solved — at that age — by hair dye and girl clothes. But national statistics on transgender life tell a different story. A national survey4 of more than 6,000 transgenders from all 50 states revealed these facts:

confusion may be, their stories are in direct conflict with the Word of God.

»» Seventy percent of transgenders misuse drugs and alcohol to cope with mistreatment. »» Transgenders are twice as likely to be unemployed. »» Transgenders are twice as likely to be homeless. »» Transgenders live in extreme poverty and are more likely to have incomes under $10,000. »» Forty-one percent of transgenders reported attempting suicide. Author and public speaker Walt Heyer confirmed these statistics as a recent guest of mine on Frances & Friends. Walt spent a good part of his life struggling as a transgender before he came to know Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour. On the program, Walt relayed how, as a very small boy, his grandmother would secretly dress him in girl’s clothing. For agreeing to wear girl clothes, his grandmother rewarded him with affection and praise. After more than two years of his grandmother www.jsm.org THE EVANGELIST SEPTEMBER 2015

cross-dressing him, Walt began to enjoy it and didn’t want to lose the love and adoration he received from his grandmother while pretending to be a girl. But the long-term actions of his grandmother, followed by negative reactions from his family once the secret got out, threw Walt into a tailspin of gender identity issues that lasted for years to come. He continued to cross-dress in secret and “feed this desire that Grandma started.” Walt went on to marry and have two children, but continued to struggle with his sexual identity and with alcohol abuse. In his late 30s, he found a doctor who specialized in gender issues and diagnosed Walt with gender dysphoria. The doctor recommended ongoing hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery. That same doctor told Walt, “All the stress and confusion will go away. You’ll finally be happy in your own skin and you’ll be who you really are.” This proved to be a lie. When Walt did have gender reassignment surger y, he experienced temporary euphoria and relief. But within seven years of his operation, Walt regretted his decision and began to seek ways to change back to his original gender. “You really don’t change,” Walt said. “They leave you with a mutilated body. You never became a female. You acted out as though you were when you really weren’t. So the change back isn’t as dramatic as people think. I’d been living a false gender role like anyone who changes gender.” During his journey back to his original gender, Walt discovered a church that received him in love and a pastor who told him, “My job is to love you. It’s God’s job to change you.” Praise the Lord, He is able! The Bible says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (II Cor. 5:17).

FRANCES & FRIENDS GUEST, AUTHOR, AND PUBLIC SPEAKER WALT HEYER: TODAY, AS A CHILD, AND AS A WOMAN

After a personal encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ, Walt said the Lord redeemed and restored him. Today, he celebrates a stable marriage, has a great relationship with his children, and heads a ministry helping others who struggle with gender identity issues.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord” (Luke 4:18-19).

SENT TO HEAL THE BROKENHEARTED

Brother Smith went on to say that the whole idea of identity comes from God. He said, “There is an answer in Jesus Christ and we can become who He created us to be.”

There are lot of hurting people out there and I thank God that Walt Heyer shared his story with our SBN viewers and again here for our readers to let people know that there is forgiveness and that you can make the Lord Jesus Christ your personal Saviour and heaven your home. Precious Jesus. During that show with Walt, I liked what Dave Smith said about God being the healer of broken hearts. He said, “Whether our hearts are broken because of sins we’ve committed or because of sins others have committed against us; God is the healer of broken hearts.” We see the Lord Jesus confirming this Himself in the fourth chapter of Luke:

Consider these verses from Psalm 139: “For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Last year, Walt posted a video on YouTube where he said this: “What I am really troubled by is the universities now are teaching the LGBT multiple gender thing — that gender is fluid. You know, the LGBT is not going to redeem your life; Jesus Christ will. He can redeem yours if you struggle with gender identity issues just like He did mine, and you need to know that.”5

UNLESS AMERICA REPENTS I would like to close this article with a message for the church and for this country. It’s a few paragraphs taken from a book, Rape of a Nation, which my husband wrote in the mid-1980s but is even more relevant today. In fact, we will be rereleasing this book shortly. My husband writes: Satan has always endeavored to take God’s most cherished creation, mankind, and pervert him to nothing more than the soulless condition of the animal kingdom. Because of their great wickedness, God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. If necessary, He will destroy our nation if men refuse to repent and turn from their wicked ways. But, in a greater sense, Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of the shortfall in the number of righteous people. If there had been just 10 righteous people, God would have spared these cities.

We, the people of God, can’t ignore the cascade of filth being poured out upon us from the pit of hell. Sexual immorality, pornography, sexual abuse of children, and homosexuality all reflect the depths of depravity to which America has sunk. Alexis de Toqueville’s famous words ring with profound truth: “America is great because she is good. When America ceases to be good, she will cease to be great.” America is being weighed in the balance and found wanting. The sexual revolution drains its poisonous consequences across the land like a pustulant sore. Unless America repents, the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah will surely overtake us.6 In the book of Malachi, the Lord says that if we will return to Him, He will return to us. Let this promise be our prayer for the United States of America.

TO KNOW, TO RECEIVE, TO GIVE by donnie swaggart Proverbs 1:2-6 – “To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.”

The book of Proverbs is the wisdom of God... The entirety of the book was from

THE BOOK OF PROVERBS is the wisdom of God. Though written by Solomon, who was the wisest man in the world, not one proverb was derived from his wisdom. The entirety of the book was from the Holy Spirit. The Hebrew word proverb is formed from the verb to rule or to govern. This means that the book of Proverbs is a wisdom-holder and its purpose is to rule man’s conduct on earth. George Williams says of Proverbs:

the Holy Spirit.

The wisdom in this book is not human sagacity or cleverness or ability, but the application to the smallest details of human life of the wisdom which build the heavens and earth, and maintains them in beings. This is grace indeed that God should place His wisdom at the disposition of man for happiness, and to his walking a safe road in the midst of confusion and evil and danger. The book contrasts the fear of Jehovah and the follow of self will. The former is declared to be the foundation of wisdom and prosperity; the latter denounced as the cause of suffering and death. This book deals with God’s moral government in the earth, and is a sure guide amidst life’s perplexities. It undertakes to lead men to

18 SEPTEMBER 2015 THE EVANGELIST

safety whether they be princes or peasants; and to direct them to aright in all their concerns whether public and private. Pulpit Commentary says: We gather from various indications in the book that wisdom is regarded in a three-fold respect: 1. First, as an essential attribute of Almighty God; 2. Second, as revealed in creation; and 3. Third, as communicated to man. It is the mind or thought of God; it is that by which He created the world; it is that which regulates and informs the moral being of man. Man’s wisdom is earthly and sinuous and at its root selfish. Man’s wisdom is rooted in the fall; therefore, man’s wisdom has given this world famine, genocide, racism, suffering, and war. God’s wisdom is revealed in His Son, Jesus Christ, and the greatest example of God’s wisdom is Calvary.

TO KNOW Proverbs 1:2 says: “To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding.” To know wisdom is to know the Bible, for the Bible is wisdom. Everything God desires us to know Visit my website at www.donnieswaggart.org

DONNIE SWAGGART

is found in the pages of God’s Word. The Bible is the story of Jesus Christ and Him crucified. There is no wisdom outside of the Cross. The Word of God brings freedom and liberty, not only to the individual but to the nation as well. No Bible — no freedom; little Bible — little freedom; much Bible — much freedom. Here in America, we have the freedom we have because of the Bible. Our nation was founded upon the precept of God’s Word. You must know the Bible, and the only way to know the Bible is to read the Bible and to ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand what you are reading. John 14:26 says: “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” This is a great promise; however, what the Holy Spirit can bring to one’s remembrance is directly tied to how much Bible he or she knows. The more

you know, the more He can bring to remembrance in your time of need. Believers should also avail themselves of good study aids to help them understand the Bible. I strongly suggest to readers to get an Expositor’s Study Bible and our Bible commentaries.

TO RECEIVE Proverbs 1:3 says: “To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity.” If you really know God’s Word, then your heart’s desire will be to receive the instruction of the Bible. You have many today who want to receive the instruction of the Bible. The meaning of “to receive” is to “obey” the Word of God. It means that we desire the Bible to be our guide for life and living. It means we don’t try to force Scripture to fit our belief system, but instead we let Scripture establish our belief system. If we receive God’s Word correctly, then justice, righteous judgment, and equity — that which is correct and fair — will follow.

TO GIVE Proverbs 1:4 says: “To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.” This tells us that if you know the Bible and if you receive its instruction, then you will “give,” which refers to the benefit of giving biblical knowledge to others. The word give implies not only our ability to share God’s Word with others, but it also refers to giving of our time and our funds to spread the gospel to others. When we learn to give to those in need, they in turn receive knowledge and discretion, which, as it is used here, means “wisdom.”

CONCLUSION If we know; if we receive; if we give; then according to Proverbs 1:5, the Lord considers us “wise” and He promises us to increase “learning” through “the wise counsel of the Lord.”

THE FRUIT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS by gabriel swaggart THIS ARTICLE IS A PART II OF “THE FRUIT OF SIN” FROM LAST MONTH'S ISSUE OF THE EVANGELIST.

Romans 6:22 – “But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, you have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.” IN LAST MONTH’S ARTICLE, we began to look into what happens to the believer when they are being controlled by the sin nature — the nature that is completely contrary to God — and it never ends well for anyone who is being dominated by the sin nature. For the unbeliever, that life leads to misery, shame, heartache, and ultimately death — both spiritually and physically. For the believer, it doesn’t mean that the individual in question will lose their soul, but it does mean that they will not enjoy all of the benefits that Christ paid for on Calvary’s Cross. Many in the Christian world only know what it is to be controlled by something that causes them to do things that they do not want to do, and they do not understand how to stop it. They struggle to live a holy life, a life pleasing to the Lord, but they do not know exactly how that can be done. Today I have good news: you as a believer can live a life of complete and total victory over sin! Once the believer understands God’s prescribed order of victory, he or she can experience fruit unto righteousness instead of having fruit unto death.

20 SEPTEMBER 2015 THE EVANGELIST

GOD’S PRESCRIBED ORDER OF VICTORY Before we get into what Paul is saying in verse 22 of Romans, Chapter 6, I want to briefly explain what God’s prescribed order of victory is and what it means. The first thing that we need to know about God’s prescribed order of victory is that Jesus Christ is the source of all blessings. He is the source from whence all blessings flow, and there is no other avenue that can bring about blessings. No other person, no other ideology, no other man-made religion or philosophy can bring about any blessings to its followers. Every good thing that happens to the believer comes from Jesus Christ; every one of us would shout over that, and rightly so. But we need to take it one step further, for as Christ is the very source of all blessings, the question remains as to how we receive these blessings. Christ is the source and the Cross of Christ is the means by which we receive all blessings. In fact, the Cross is the greatest blessing that could happen to anyone, for it was at the Cross that all sin, past, present, and future was atoned.

It was through the Cross of Christ that I am able to experience salvation, healing, deliverance, and so forth. The blessings of God could not be poured out on mankind if it were not for the Cross, for this is the way that man was brought back into right relationship with God. Some may get a little uneasy about this statement, but the fact is that the Cross of Christ is the greatest display of the grace of God that man has ever known. It is because of the Cross that all — at least those who are born again — can experience blessings unparalleled from their heavenly Father. Christ is the source of all blessing, and the Cross is the means by which we receive all blessings. The third step to this little formula is faith. We appropriate these blessings through the avenue of faith, but more importantly, faith in Christ and Him crucified. Without faith, Paul would say in Hebrews, it is impossible to please God (Heb. 11:6). He didn’t say that it was improbable; he said it is impossible. God operates on the basis of faith, but our faith must be anchored and rooted in Christ and the Cross. Lastly, once our faith is anchored in Christ and the Cross, the Holy Spirit will begin to oversee ever y thing,

meaning that He will begin to work in our lives to take out the bad and put in the good. Just because the Holy Spirit is God does not mean that His help is automatic, it’s quite the opposite really. The Holy Spirit, even though He is God, will only properly work in our lives if our faith is anchored in Christ and the Cross (Rom. 8:2) and will not work outside of those parameters. This is how the believer can live a life pleasing to the Lord — by faith in Christ and the Him crucified, which gives the Holy Spirit the ability to work in our lives in the way that He sees fit, and will bring about the victory that is needed.

BUT NOW As Paul brought about what the former life brought about, he concludes his statements by saying, “But now…” meaning that before you accepted Christ, the path that all were heading on was leading toward destruction, but now, since you came to Christ, things are going to be different! I love these two words — but now — because we all, at least all who are saved, can relate to them. We can remember the life we used to live, but now things are different, we are no longer heading in that direction and we are no longer experiencing fruit unto death, but since we have accepted Christ, we are now experiencing fruit unto righteousness.

HOLINESS Holiness is simply living a holy life, and is the total opposite of iniquity. This direction Paul gives is the same principle as before in the previous verses, but now it’s going in the opposite direction. Instead of iniquity leading to iniquity, which is dragging someone down, now, due to the Cross of Christ, they are now going upward. I want you to understand that. Instead of going downward, which is where sin will lead you, you are now heading ever upward.

»» Upward because of Christ. »» Upward because of the Cross. »» Upward because of faith. And as a result of this change, the power of the indwelling sin nature has been broken, and we no longer yield our members towards unrighteousness, but now we can yield them to righteousness unto holiness, and the only requirement is that we follow Christ.

BEING A SERVANT OF GOD Another aspect of living for the Lord is that the individual becomes a servant of God. I know that most would look at this term in a negative way, but when it comes to being a Christian, it becomes such a privilege to be known as a servant of God. A servant speaks of being a slave but not in a negative way. In the Old Testament, you will find that a slave who was given his freedom would decline that freedom to stay where he was. He did it for a specific reason; he did it because he loved his master. In turn, the slave was granted protection, safety, security, and was treated so well that he felt he would have more freedom in serving his master than he would by living on his own outside of the master’s home. To demonstrate commitment to his master, the freed slave would take an awl and pierce his ear. If it was like that then, how much better we have it now because, as Paul would say, we have a better covenant based on better promises. We have protection, safety, and security in Christ. We will experience more freedom living for Christ than not, and we do it because of His love for us and because of our love for Him. I would much rather be known as a servant of God than a servant of the Devil. As they say, our worst day serving the Lord is 10,000 times better than an entire lifetime with the Devil.

BEING MADE FREE FROM SIN This is something that we need to understand, and I speak of living a victorious life in Christ. Every believer has the potential

This means that if we look to the Cross daily, meaning that we place our faith in Christ and Him crucified, we can be continually made free from the sin nature. to live this more abundant life, yet so many fail to avail themselves of experiencing this more abundant life, and the reason is a lack of knowledge of the Cross. There is only one cure for the sinner and the saint — Christ and Him crucified — and what He did for us was for the entirety of the world, for with His death on Calvary’s Cross, the sin debt was removed. But thank the Lord that this great blessing did not stop there, for not only did it remove the sin debt from those would simply believe, it also broke the grip of sin in the life of the believer. This means that if we look to the Cross daily, meaning that we place our faith in Christ and Him crucified, we can be continually made free from the sin nature. Paul said it in verse 14 of this same chapter, that “sin shall not have dominion over you,” which means exactly what it says — you can be free now, and you can daily be made free from the grip of sin that has plagued your life. However, we can experience this only if we take advantage of God’s prescribed order of victory, which is the Cross.

EVERLASTING LIFE Last, but not least, living for the Lord will lead to everlasting life. Paul would conclude this chapter by saying, “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.” The answer for the sin problem in the world and in the church is the same, Jesus Christ and Him crucified. We must begin this salvation life at the Cross, and we must never leave the Cross; it brings life and life ever more abundant.

VIEWER DELIVERED FROM ALCOHOL CHOOSES GOD TO STAY SOBER OVER AA DEAR EVANGELIST: I am writing you to let you know I am 29 years old, and I was addicted to alcohol for 10 years. I have been sober now for 18 months. I was flipping through the TV on October 18, 2013, and a man who I didn’t know at the time was preaching. I had my rum on the rocks in my hand, and he looked at the TV screen and said, “There’s someone watching who is in bondage of alcohol and said it’s time to give it to God.” That man was Brother Loren Larson, and that day — October 18, 2013 — I got saved and I haven’t drank since. My doctor told me that I needed AA to stay sober, and I looked at her and said, “I have something better; it’s called G-O-D!” Praise the Lord above and thank you for having this network on TV. Because of SBN, I am now a sober child of God and I serve Him each and every day. I owe my life to you for spreading the Word of God because it saved a no-good drunk to a God-fearing, God-loving Christian, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. – Maryland

BORN IN BAGHDAD; BORN AGAIN, FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT WATCHING SBN DEAR EVANGELIST: I was watching a prerecorded Christmas 2010 service, and I must say it was powerful. As I was watching, I noticed my two granddaughters were sitting, glued on the couch next to me. As time came for the altar call, I raised my hands and repeated the prayer. All of sudden, I started speaking in tongues. It happened just like you say: it started welling up and I couldn’t stop. I started speaking loud, arms up in the air, walking in circles, and saying, “Praise God, Hallelujah.” It went on for a few minutes and all of a sudden, I noticed my two little granddaughters walking in circles right behind me, arms up in the air saying, “Praise God, Hallelujah.” I stopped and I started crying, yet smiling at the sight, overwhelmed with the power of the Holy Spirit. I looked at the girls and I said, “Lord, I know I have planted seeds in their hearts, and they will never forget this.” I purposely tune in on your 30

RECIPIENT OF LADIES’ EXPOSITOR’S BIBLE SAYS IT’S SUCH A LOVELY GIFT DEAR EVANGELIST: I’m including a thank you note I received today when I sent the Ladies’ Edition Bible I purchased on June 1: “I am beside myself! Thank you for this thoughtful gift! Did you know that I’ve been in a women’s Bible study for about a year? Our group is small, but we love it! We are currently doing Ruth, so I just opened to this chapter! The way this Bible is done is going to give me (us) such insights!!! This is such a lovely gift and very kind of you — sending you hugs! The maps in the back! Love! I have been using the Bible that I had in 8th grade for my Lutheran confirmation classes, and it is so fragile. Part of me liked being able to see the old notes and underlinings from the past, but I am really going to use my new one going forward!” – Florida

BIBLE STUDY MORE MEANINGFUL USING THE EXPOSITOR’S STUDY BIBLE DEAR EVANGELIST: This past Christmas I purchased an Expositor’s Study Bible for my son. He is going to college and lives with me which is a blessing as I am elderly and need his help, so it is a win-win situation. We are reading through the Bible, and we each take turns in picking a book to read. We read one chapter per day aloud and then discuss it, followed with a reading from Pastor Swaggart’s The Expositors Word For Everyday. We then pray for a while. We recently finished the Song of Solomon which I chose as our book to study. As we began reading it, I was reading it aloud when I looked up at my son and said, “I do not get this at all! Why is it here in the Bible? I was frustrated to not understand it. It has been the only book in the entire Bible that has totally frustrated

me for many years. I had previously known also that it is an allegory of Christ’s love for His church, but I could not see it! So we decided to read Pastor Swaggart’s comments first, straight through, one chapter at a time. Upon completing his expositor notes on one chapter, we would then go back and read the chapter aloud as well. One chapter a day; I needed to go slow. The result? I have never been so blessed by any book after proceeding with this process! It was like opening the door of a dark room that all of a sudden became lit up very, very brightly with intense light! At some points, I found myself crying it was so beautiful as the love that God has for His chosen, how He sees them, and how He died for them is made so clear by Pastor Swaggart’s comments. For the first time in all these years, I totally understood this beautiful book. I told my son that this is probably the most beautiful book in the entire Bible (at least in my opinion)! Upon completion, I asked to heap blessings on your ministry as I was moved by the power of God’s plan for His people, as it became clear through the expositor comments. Thank you so much for this work. It is a blessing and now I will be ordering an Expositor’s Bible for myself!

WORD FOR EVERY DAY DEVOTIONAL POINTS BELIEVER TO THE CROSS DEAR EVANGELIST: I received the The Expositor’s Word for Every day devotional as a gift from my mother-in-law, and I need to testify that it has been a great blessing to my life. It arrived at the right time, just as God’s manna to His people in the wilderness. It is amazing how every day I’m drawn closer and closer to my Lord, by understanding and acknowledging what He did for me at that Cross. All I want to do now is to look at that Cross everyday all day, and try to honor with my life what He did. Thanks, Brother Jimmy Swaggart, for obeying God’s Word. – California

BAPTISM INTO CHRIST by loren larson II Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away behold, all things are become new.” THREE BAPTISMS AS I STUDY THE New Testament, I see three baptisms that were encountered by the New Testament believer. First and foremost, there is a baptism into the body of Christ. This is accomplished as the Holy Spirit unites and plants the believing sinner into Christ at salvation. I Corinthians 12:13 says, “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body.” This baptism is what is being referred to in Romans 6:3-5. After this truly “born again” experience, either one of the next two baptisms are legitimate. There is a baptism with water that witnesses to all that the believer has accepted Jesus Christ as their Saviour and dedicated his or her heart and life to Him. This baptism is seen in Matthew 28:19. Then there is the baptism with the Holy Spirit, where Jesus Himself baptizes the born-again believer into the person of the Holy Spirit. The initial physical evidence of this baptism is speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives the believer supernatural power. Its purpose is not to save, but to empower the believer

32

SEPTEMBER 2015 THE EVANGELIST

for service and enhance the relationship that believer has already established with the indwelling Spirit of God. Only the first baptism — a baptism into Christ — is necessary for salvation, but according to the record of the New Testament, all three baptisms are normal Christian experiences and should be pursued and experienced by all who are saved. In this article we want to begin looking at the miracle and benefits of the first baptism, being “baptized into Christ.”

DEFINING THE NEW CREATION First, let’s establish that the supernatural construction that is carried out in the human heart at salvation is done solely by the Holy Spirit. In Colossians 2:11 the Bible says, “In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands….” The surgery that is performed by the Holy Spirit at the moment of redemption is not done with human hands. The circumcision is one of the heart, the soul, and the spirit as described by Paul in Romans 2:28-29 which says “For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is

outward in the flesh: but he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.” The heart is made up of two separate entities: the soul (the part of man that feels) and the spirit (the part of man that knows). The Holy Spirit reconstructs the soul causing the believer to have an inner love for God and the desire to get to know Him better. The reconstructed spirit becomes the receiving center of revelation and understanding. The Holy Spirit brings the information from God, relaying it to and through the newly installed “receiver” of the born-again spirit. The Holy Spirit moves into this newly constructed heart and immediately begins the process of teaching, leading, revealing, rebuking, instructing, guiding, etc. The Holy Spirit is God dwelling in man. The Holy Spirit did not come to be a silent partner. Therefore, we must learn not to grieve or quench Him. These miraculous changes were prophesied in Ezekiel 36:25-27. As another supernatural benefit, the moral code

LOREN LARSON

of God is written into the very heart of the believer at redemption. Hebrews 10:16 verifies this truth. If we then add a growing knowledge of the Word with the presence of the Holy Spirit dwelling inside the new creation, true life can now begin. All of this is available only because of what Christ Jesus did for us on the Cross.

THE DEFEAT OF SIN At the core of man’s “sin problem” lies the sin nature. This nature was received at the fall of man and passed on to all human beings born thereafter. The sin nature, also known as the sin principle or the Adamic nature, bends the heart of man toward ungodliness and sin until the conscience of man is so seared that sin becomes the norm and not the exception. This “source” of sin is continually corrupting the heart (soul and spirit) working and weaving evil desires, ungodly thoughts, and self-

ish designs into the framework of the heart. Romans 6:1-11 teaches us what every Christian must know — that our baptism into Christ breaks the power of the sin nature and separates the new believer from the impacting influence of the sin nature. So our salvation experience frees us from both the penalty of sin and from the very source of sinful bents in us. Next the clean up work commences, being headed up by the Holy Spirit. He immediately goes to work to rid us of every evil desire and design that has been painted in our souls by the active sin nature. Ever y parent will understand this illustration. A child finds a crayon and connects that crayon to the walls of their bedroom creating a masterpiece of disaster on the wall. If you don’t remove the crayon from the child’s hand there is no way to effectively clean that wall. But after the crayon has

been eliminated and the child “taught” that that action is unacceptable, then and only then can the cleanup process begin. Even so, our salvation frees us from the “coloring” influences of the sin nature and the Holy Spirit instantly descends upon the mess inside us. With all of His power, He begins to eliminate the strongholds and sets out to establish the new man. Thus, progressive sanctification has begun (once again, all because of our simple faith in Christ and the Cross) and the Holy Spirit is the sanctifier. Romans 8:2 has become a reality: “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” All of this and more is ours because of simple faith in Christ. All of this and more is maintained as we come to understand what Christ did for us on Calvary and as we fight to maintain our faith in what it means to be “baptized into Christ.”

MIKE

MUZZER ALL TAKE AWAY THE FILTHY GARMENTS by mike muzzerall ZECHARIAH 3:4 – “And He answered and spoke unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.”

THREE BAPTISMS ONE OF THE GREATEST examples of justification in the Old Testament is found in Zechariah, Chapter 3. Let me set the scene: the prophet Zechariah had a vision of a divine court room. Joshua, the high priest (not to be confused with Joshua who led Israel into the promised land), stood as the accused. Satan stood as the prosecutor. Both stood before the angel of the Lord. The evidence was self-evident as Joshua stood clothed in “filthy garments.” Whereas the verdict should clearly have been guilty as charged, the command given was, “Take away the filthy garments.”

JOSHUA THE HIGH PRIEST The high priest wore a “bonnet” with “holiness unto the Lord” inscribed on the front. In contradiction, Joshua stood before God dressed in filthy garments. The garment represented his spiritual condition. And yet, it went further than that. As the high priest, Joshua also represented the people he ministered to, on their behalf. Therefore, his garment also represented the sinful condition of Judah that warranted the Babylonian captivity in the first place.

as charged. It is interesting that Satan, who was present before the throne of God, was not given the opportunity to accuse Joshua. In reality, his words were not necessary. Joshua stood wearing the exact evidence necessary to prove his guilt. Joshua as well as Judah was incapable of dealing with the effect of sin. Man cannot wash away the filth of sin. Joshua stood guilty as charged.

THE LORD REBUKE THEE The decision of the court was one I’m sure both Joshua, the accused; and Satan, the silent accuser, did not expect. Seated as the Judge was the Angel of the Lord, who is actually the second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ. “And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. And the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?” (Zec 3:2). This was no ordinary angel. Only Jesus could say, “I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee.” Only Jesus could say, “I will clothe thee with change of raiment.”

GUILTY AS CHARGED

JUSTIFICATION

Joshua could not defend himself. Judah also had no defense. They were guilty

The doctrine of justification by faith is foundational to the Christian life and yet

so often ignored and misunderstood. Justification does not disregard the true condition of man. “For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Justification by faith realizes that although clearly guilty of sin, we are declared righteous by the heavenly Judge through placing our faith in the atoning work of Christ at Calvary.

UNWORTHY, YET DECLARED RIGHTEOUS The commonly used definition of grace is “unmerited favor.” The basis of the Message of the Cross is that unwor thy man can be acceptable to God through what Jesus Christ accomplished through His atoning sacrifice at Calvary. Unless we can admit we are dressed in “filthy garments,” how can we truly repent and have God remove our filthy garments? On Thursday, July 7, 1977, I cried out to God for mercy and grace. That day, God said, “Take away the filthy garments...behold I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.” As in the example of Joshua I was likewise justified. Justification by faith! Dear friend, has God said of you, “Take away the filthy garment”?

Also, as many of you as can, don’t fail to be with us in the campmeetings at Family Worship Center. You talk about church, that’s church! The next one is our Thanksgiving Campmeeting and the dates are November 25-29. It’s going to be a little bit of heaven on earth.

OUR LEADERS AND ISLAM As I think is fairly obvious, it seems like our political leaders in America don’t understand the religion of Islam. They look at it as any other religion, which it isn’t. As a result of their erroneous conclusion, they have surmised that only a few Muslims fall into the category of being radicals. They conclude all the balance to be a peace-loving people, etc. Nothing could be further from the truth. While all Muslims aren’t murderers, the truth is, all Muslims are in sympathy with the murderers. And to be frank, they hate Israel, and they hate us. All Muslims go by the Koran. And when the opportunity presents itself, they enforce the Koran, which means that every one who does not convert to Islam, will be made a slave or killed — and killed on the spot. The following should be understood: The Muslim world does not lack the will, they only lack the way. What do I mean by that? If they had their way, the streets of America would run red with blood. As stated, every one in this nation would instantly convert to Islam or be beheaded. The only reason they don’t do it is simply because they can’t do it. And here is the rub: Sooner or later one of these radicals is going to get their hands on a small atomic bomb. They’re

going to detonate it in one of our cities, killing tens of thousands of people. I once thought if that horrible thing happened that we might wake up. However, we are so blind to the truth, that I’m not sure even that would wake us up. Our nation desperately needs revival. The church desperately needs to come back to the Cross. That’s the only hope for America, and the world for that matter.

THANK YOU… I’m speaking to those of you who pray for us, and who support this work financially, without which we could not do what we are doing. I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that we have the message. I also know what it will do in the hearts and lives of both the redeemed and the unredeemed. Thank you for helping to make it possible. A few weeks ago, the Holy Spirit spoke at Family Worship Center with a message in tongues and interpretation. In essence it said: “I am going to hold back judgment for a period of time, and during that time I’m going to pour out My Spirit,” or words to that effect. To be sure, America is due judgment, but thank God if in fact He is going to hold that judgment back. Whatever the Lord is going to do, I want Family Worship Center, in effect the entirety of this ministry, to be a part of it. I believe we will!

Jimmy Swaggart

1987 [ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5] ”Until recently, we didn’t take them too seriously,” said Bishop Silesio Bohn of Santa Cruz do Sul, who is responsible for ecumenism in the Brazilian Conference of Catholic Bishops. ”We saw them as an almost inevitable product of a society experiencing deep and chaotic change. But we are now undertaking an honest review of what we should do.” Twenty-seven years after the Rio de Janiero crusade, Evangelist Donnie Swaggart returned to Brazil to preach meetings at the Assemblies of God Canaan — a church in Fortaleza that was greatly influenced by Jimmy Swaggart Ministries in the 1980s. In an article about this trip, Brother Donnie offered some church history on Brazil. He wrote: Unknown to most, Brazil is the most Pentecostal country in the world. It is estimated that 42.3 million people — 23 percent of the population of the country — call themselves Pentecostal. The message of Pentecost first came to Brazil in 1911 through two Swedish missionaries — Gunnar Vingrer and Daniel Berg. Though it was slow going at first in 1930, there was a Pentecostal explosion resulting in many miracles of divine healings, which led to rapid expansion of Pentecostal churches being established. In the 1980s, there was another great wave of growth across the nation as our telecast began to air across that land. Literally, multiple thousands of people were saved and filled with the Holy Spirit. Churches were built that would hold 5,000–10,000 individuals in order to handle the great influx of people. Many churches had to have service every single night of the week to handle all of the new people coming into the Pentecostal experience. We held two great crusades in Brazil during the 1980s — Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Of those great crusades, Brother Swaggart wrote, “I have never seen more opposition. Despite this, I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed meetings any more than I did these in Brazil, nor do I believe we have ever experienced a more consistent anointing.” The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil crusade is part of the Jimmy Swaggart Classic Crusades DVD series and is available for purchase at shopjsm.org for $20 (17-1190).
