EDITORIAL On December were found 3 more puppies in the trash inside of a plastic bag. . . Another sad story that proves that human cruelty has no limits. . . Sadly one of the puppies died and the other 2 are now being loved and treated by our volunteers. Besides that we also had to say goodbye to two of our elderly dogs, which is always sad. But not everything is bad. Nino was adopted after so many years at the shelter. And Pepe, the super sweet blind dog, has also found his family. December ended and so has the year of 2012. Our balance is clearly negative. The number of animals who entered is higher than the number of animals adopted. It is never too much to reinforce the importance of neutering and spaying. It is urgent to change society’s mentality about this issu, in order to decrease the number unwanted puppies, many of those will be abandoned or left to die. We wish 2013 to be a better and happier year for humans and animals.

Help us to help them!

DID YOU KNOW. . . It is advised that puppies play and interact with other puppies until they are 3 months of age? This way they are learning social dog rules and the utmost important bite inhibition.

MAKING ANIMALS HAPPY This month we selected the 10 book set of “Grandfather Stories” (books are written in portuguese). Timeless and classic stories written in 10 books in great condition. An excellent opportunity. See other items and utilities at the blog and know that by buying something you are directly and actively helping Association Bianca. http://fazendoanimaisfelizes.blogspot.com

WE WERE ABANDONED... Bianca was formed 10 years ago and (unfortunately) we know by heart all the excuses people come up with to give their animals: health problems, job transfers, new houses, divorces, etc. But in fact, for those who love animals, there is no reason in the world that could lead them to abandon their animal. Our shelter is not the perfect home for any animal. We bring them to the shelter (hopefully) temporarily, give them a safe place to heal and be cared for, while trying to promote a responsible adoption for each and every animal. A responsible adoption because, if someone lacks the conditions to adopt, they shouldn’t do it. The animal may become stressed, psychologically damaged and his future life may be impaired. If you want to join our cause, you may visit us on Saturdays and ďŹ nd out more about us and our work. All help is welcome. If you can and want to adopt, please send an email to sesimbra.bianca@gmail.com. If you cannot adopt but want to help, know that you may sponsor. This way you will be providing an extra welfare to an animal. Know more at http://bianca.pt/english or send us an email.

TIPS Did you know that lilies kill cats? Every part of this plant is toxic. Actually lilies are so poisonous to cats that merely biting a petal, licking the pollen or drinking water from a jar with lilies may end up in a potentially fatal kidney failure. If you have cats don't have lilies! http://bianca.pt/english | http://bianca-pet-rescue-adoption.blogspot.com .

FEATURED ANIMAL COVER ISSUE Two f e m a l e p u pp i e s f o u n d o n t h e t r a s h For those who do not care about animals, finding them inside trash cans may seem normal! But its not! Every single living being suffers, feels pain, fear, hunger, sadness, joy, pleasure. . . animals may not be human beings, and may not be considerate rational (whatever that means!) but they are sentient beings! This month we found another 3 newborn female dogs at a garbage container. These helpless animals were considered trash and we luckily found by Bianca’s volunteers. One of the dogs was already dead, but the other two are now at the home of volunteer’s that committed themselves to taking care of these poor babies. We hope to see them grow healthy and hope they find forever homes where they will not have to face the risk of abandonment again.

SPECIAL ADOPTIONS VINHAS Vinhas was found without strength and severely dehydrated. He was taken to the vet where he was found to suffer from leishmaniasis. He begun the treatment and now looks like a brand new dog. So beautiful! Vinhas is young male Serra D’Aires mixed breed dog, very active and playful. Leishmaniasis is a cureless but completely manageable disease! With daily medication dogs suffering from this condition may live many healthy years not compromising their quality of life. This is not a disease that only abandoned animals suffer from. Even dogs with owners may present this condition without their owners knowing. Don’t let Vinhas’ condition stop him from having a home.

All the volunteers who participate in this event are invited to bring a christmas prop making this walk even more funnier and joyful. News about Pepe Right in the beginning of December, Pepe was taken to a veterinary ophthalmologist for a thorough evaluation of his visual condition. Unfortunately the diagnostic was not what we expected. At this moment, his optic nerve is unresponsive to stimuli, so his blindness is irreversible. Nevertheless, Pepe is such a sweet, tender, kind and social dog. He truly deserved a second change in his life! Fortunately he was adopted on december 27th and is already at his new home with a family that accepts him for what he is and that will make everything to make him feel loved!

Aldeias SOS Crianças On December 19th, Bianca visited the “Aldeia SOS Criança” (Village SOS Children), located in Bicesse, to deliver a very generous t-shirts donation to all the children and mothers in the village. We took the opportunity to raise awareness of the children and teenagers for the advantage of animal’s identification microchip and the care we should have with our four legged friends. There was also time for a demonstration with one of Bianca’s animals. The animal shaped ballons delighted the children. We would like to leave here a very warm salute to all of those living in the Aldeias SOS Crianças. http://bianca.pt/english | http://bianca-pet-rescue-adoption.blogspot.com

S p a y/n e u t e r i n g c a m p a i g n i n 2 0 1 2 On 2012, Bianca spayed/neutered 586 animals, of which 228 were dogs (males and females) and 358 were cats. It’s an uncountable number!! All the veterinarians, Danish Friends of Animals, volunteers and collaborators involved in this project are to be congratulated. This Bianca’s work is not known by many people, but it is an extremely important one! This is one of the reasons Bianca exists and fights everyday. We prevented thousand of unwanted newborns! By the way, did you know that one single female cat can give birth to 420.000 cats in 7 years? And one single female dog and her descendants can generate 64.000 new puppies in 6 years? And there are still those who are against neutering and spaying! Animals are our top priority and our mission!

New Ambassador Bianca has a new Ambassador, the english singer Emily Lynn. Join her facebook page and thank her in the name of Bianca’s animals! http://www.facebook.com/emilylynnvocals http://bianca.pt/english | http://bianca-pet-rescue-adoption.blogspot.com

I’M VOLUNTEER Mariana Hello, my name is Mariana Pinheiro, I’m 12 years old and I’m a student. When I was 7 years old I got my first dwarf rabbit for christmas and he was my first pet. After a few years I wanted a cat and started to feed stray cats. It was then that I met a sweet female cat and ended up adopting her, now her name is Kika. I always loved animals. I volunteer at Bianca since october 2011. I loved my first “Lets Walk the Dog” and since then I go to Bianca every saturday. What motivated me most is knowing that I’m helping animals having a better life, walking, cleaning, feeding and socializing them. One episode that marked me was the day I walked a dog with my friends and he became my best friend. That dog was Camel. I liked him so much that I only walked him. I also became his temporary foster family. It was really hard to convince my parents to adopted him, I had to make lots of promises, which I don’t even remember. It came the he was adopted and since then I’m always expecting news! Animals are mistreated and many times treated like trash. We all should do something when we see an animal on the streets, in bad conditions. I see many people passing by animals suffering and doing nothing. I ask myself how can this be possible? Letting injured animals on the side of the road. . . Portugal is still very retard in this matter. My family likes my volunteership at Bianca. They even help me buying food, blankets, etc. My family is with me and always will be. What I enjoy the most at Bianca is the way I’m respected and how I help Bianca and the animals. Our pet friends are often more loyal than certain persons. Do not abandon those who will never abandoned you! Do not mistreat those who will never mistreat you! Friends do not need to be like us. They can simply have paws. Paws of all kind and shapes, it doesn’t matter! When you are loyal to someone, that someone will be loyal to you.

I FOUND A HOME. . . It is always a great joy to see an animal being adopted. An adoption should always be a conscientious, well though and voluntary act. And that is why at Bianca all adoptions are carefully considered. This way we try to assure that the animals are in good hands, that they will have a family for their entire lifes and will be loved, cherished and respected as a member of the family that feels, reacts and suffers like all of us. And even with all this some animals are still returned. Remember, if you cannot adopt there are other possibilities for you, like sponsoring. In this case, you are actually helping without taking the animal into your home. You may walk your sponsored animal, take him to the vet, etc. They thank that! Go to http://bianca.pt/english or send an email to sesimbra.bianca@gmail.com and find out more about it. If you send us photos we will publish them on our website and social networks. IN MEMORY. . . Castro Castro was at our shelter for a long time! He was a giant beautiful and sweet boy who waited for his chance to be adopted and make a very happy family. Unfortunately, Castro waited and waited. . . He was a very old dog and he got to the point when he could not get up anymore because of his dysplasia. . . Rest in peace. .

M &M M&M was one of our elderly dogs. Crunky, stubborn and glutton, he loved to walk, be petted and only got along with familiar faces. M&M had serious heart and respiratory problems and his mobility was decreasing everyday. . . sadly, animals do not live forever. Rest in peace dear M&M.

FRIENDS OF BIANCA

After a busy November which saw a Friends of Bianca stall at numerous Christmas Fairs around Scotland and in Canada, December was a little more sedate. We did, however, sell out of the highly successful Calendars (designed by David Stout) and Christmas Cards which netted a decent sum for Bianca. We also took delivery of three new merchandise items – notelets featuring For do Mar (£2.50/ 3 Euros for a pack of 6), Bianca pens (£1.00/ 1.20 Euros) and brilliant new tote bags which are very stylish, two tone black and white, with a front pocket in addition to the main carrying pouch and made from a sturdy eco friendly material. And yet they are available for only £2.00/ 2.5 Euros!. The pens and bags will soon be in stock at Bianca but if you want to order by mail, email Mike at info@friendsofbianca.org for a price inclusive of shipping. December also saw the number of animals fostered through FOB rise to 60.

Fi ve P o u n d a n d Tw a B a i r n s In January a production of Mike Gibb’s musical play “Five Pound & Twa Bairns” will be performed at the Dundee REP theatre in Scotland and Friends of Bianca will enjoy proceeds from the stage show. The play has six characters – Alec, Andrew, Bernard, Mary, Grace and Rebecca- and a litter of pups found abandoned in a forest with their Mum were named after them. The seventh pup was called Mairi (in honour of Mairi Paton who wrote the music) while the Mum became Clarinda, named after the title character in another of Mike’s musicals! http://bianca.pt/english | http://bianca-pet-rescue-adoption.blogspot.com
