Accessing quality health care in Fort Collins is getting a little easier. When Banner Fort Collins Medical Center and the adjoining Banner Health Center for specialty physicians opens April 6, 2015 at the corner of Harmony Road and Lady Moon Drive, it will mark a new era for choice in Fort Collins and the surrounding area. Banner Fort Collins Medical Center is a full-service, acute-care hospital offering emergency care, orthopedics, general surgery, women’s health, labor and delivery, gastroenterology, urology, pulmonology, intensive care, medical imaging, laboratory services, and other medical and surgical care. On the same campus, area residents will be able to schedule outpatient appointments with a wide variety of Banner Medical Group specialists including pediatricians, cardiologists, general surgeons, neurosurgeons, urologists, pulmonologists, OB/ Gyns, and gastroenterologists. Banner orthopedic surgeons will be seeing patients at our Banner Health Center on Drake and performing surgeries in the new hospital. Together with the other Banner Medical Group specialists and primary care physicians already serving patients in Fort Collins, and the independent physicians who partner with Banner Health, we look forward to meeting the health care needs of this community. So why are we expanding our Fort Collins presence? Simple: The demand for our services in this community is growing. We know people want to receive care close to where they live and we have invested $86 million into our 28-acre medical campus to ensure we can meet that growing need. Our new hospital is equipped with a remote telemedicine monitoring technology that transmits vital signs and test results for every patient admitted to the hospital to an offsite operations center. There, expert nurses, and intensive care physicians in the case of our critically ill patients, monitor them 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This round-the-clock care supports the hospital nurses and physicians working at the bedside to ensure that potential adverse trends are identified and addressed as early as possible. The technology has improved patient outcomes in other Banner Health facilities where it is used and we are excited to provide it in our new Fort Collins facility. Banner Fort Collins Medical Center is our fifth hospital in Colorado, joining McKee Medical Center in Loveland, North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, East Morgan County Hospital in Brush and Sterling Regional MedCenter in Sterling. McKee and NCMC were each named among America’s 100 Best Hospitals™ by Healthgrades in 2014 and this year Healthgrades named NCMC one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals™. Many of the same physicians and staff members who have provided that award-winning care in Greeley and Loveland will be practicing in Fort Collins. Many of you have used Banner Health for care in the past. We opened our first Fort Collins patient clinic in 2001 at 303 Colland Drive on the south end of town. Over the years, we have added providers and clinics to the community, first at 608 E. Harmony Road, and then on Drake Road, just east of Shields Street. This is a new era in healthcare for Northern Colorado. Our integrated network of medical providers, hospitals, and insurance providers are working together to deliver the best care possible from diagnosis to discharge in cost-effective ways. On behalf of the 4,700 Banner Health employees working in Northern Colorado, our independent and Banner-employed physician partners, and our volunteers, thank you for the warm reception to Fort Collins. We are committed to delivering an outstanding patient experience for you, your family and your friends. I invite you to join us on Saturday, March 28, 2015 when we host a community open house at our new hospital from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. You will have the opportunity to take tours, and meet many of the caregivers who will be working in the new facility. I hope you can attend. May God bless you, the United States military and the United States of America. Sincerely, Rick Sutton Chief Executive Officer Banner Health in Northern Colorado

Medical Center of the Rockies Poudre Valley Hospital

Dear Reader: This is a big year for Poudre Valley Hospital as it marks the 90th year of caring for the community. We have grown in many ways and that trend certainly continues in 2015. As we enhance and expand our services at PVH, Medical Center of the Rockies and our health care clinics to meet the needs of our growing communities, we continue to focus on providing the highest quality, most innovative health care available in northern Colorado. The 2014 year was exciting for us, but 2015 also promises many landmark moments. PVH has been re-designated for the fourth consecutive time as a Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence, the nationally recognized gold standard in nursing. Magnet designation symbolizes years of hard work, tireless commitment, endless training, success and quality, especially for patients. Even now, 20 years after the Magnet program was launched nationwide and then moved onto the worldwide scene in 2000, only eight Colorado hospitals have been designated. MCR is another one of those hospitals. Our Loveland hospital earned its designation in October 2010 and is developing an application to submit for re-designation in April 2015. We continue to develop the use of our top-of-the-line electronic medical records system called Epic. This system helps us better connect our hospitals, clinics and partners throughout the Front Range, saving time and improving patient safety. It also has allowed us to provide My Health Connection — a direct, secure and time-saving online service — to our patients. My Health Connection gives patients access to test results, allows them to set appointment reminders, pay bills and renew prescriptions, and communicate with their provider. Meanwhile, we’re expanding services to meet the needs of the communities we serve and fulfill our mission: From health care to health. In June 2014, we opened our new cancer center, a 30,000-square-foot facility on the Harmony Campus in southeastern Fort Collins. Here, we can provide a better, comprehensive cancer-care experience in one location. Through our partnership with University of Colorado Cancer Center in Metro Denver, our patients have access to a robust portfolio of clinical trials that may provide those who qualify with access to drugs and vaccines years before they are widely available – all right here in northern Colorado. In December 2014, we announced plans to build a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week emergency medical care center, also on the Harmony Campus, to meet the needs of that area’s rapidly growing population. Ground breaking is expected in March, with an opening date in August 2015. The $12.3-million center will offer easy access and comfort with short waiting times, efficiency of service and high-quality care. It will have 12 private exam rooms and computed tomography, ultrasound and basic X-ray services. It also will include an outpatient laboratory and retail pharmacy, both which will be open 24/7, the first in this area of the city. To ring in the new year, we welcomed the Longmont Clinic, a trusted provider of health care for residents since 1906, to the UCHealth team. The clinic brings with it 275 providers and employees — offering care in 19 medical specialties — to help UCHealth provide the very best care for patients in and around Longmont. And most recently, we partnered with Colorado State University to build a medical center that will become the gateway to the CSU campus at College Avenue and Prospect Road. CSU’s $59 million on-campus medical center will house the university’s existing Health Network, as well as services provided by UCHealth and Associates in Family Medicine, including a walk-in clinic, imaging and occupational health. The center also will feature a new Columbine Health Systems Center for Healthy Aging that will provide CSU with research and outreach program opportunities. We continue with plans to replace the oldest section of PVH at the northwest corner of the hospital with a two-story, 113,000-square-foot medical building. This will allow us to expand PVH’s emergency room to meet a projected increase of ER patients from the current 52,000 a year to 70,000. PVH will also expand its high-level neonatal intensive care unit, providing specialized patient-care rooms in which parents can remain overnight while their babies are in the NICU. We hope to start demolition of the old building by fall of this year and continue into 2016 with new construction. For patients, the presence of UCHealth in northern Colorado means more opportunities for high-quality, compassionate care, improved medical record access and, among other benefits, new services such as our cancer center and soon-to-be emergency center. I am honored to be a part of the hospital and health system that has been serving Fort Collins and northern Colorado since 1925. Our UCHealth team looks forward to providing you and your family with excellent care and service for many years to come.

A little over three years ago, Kaiser Permanente announced plans to expand into Northern Colorado. Now, our footprint in this vibrant community has grown and we are proud to serve more than 28,000 members living in Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley and surrounding communities. Convenience, high-quality care, choice and affordability are the hallmarks of our Northern Colorado service area. Kaiser Permanente offers comprehensive health care close to home at our medical offices in Fort Collins, Loveland, and Greeley. These medical offices feature primary care, pharmacy, medical imaging and laboratory services available under one roof. Technology plays a significant role in our ability to deliver care that is both convenient and high-quality. This is rooted in our integrated care delivery system where patient care teams leverage a robust system of electronic medical records to deliver the right care at the right time. Kaiser Permanente members can also actively engage in managing their health through My Health Manager, our personal health record. My Health Manager allows users to access their health records securely online, view lab results, email their physicians, request prescription refills and make, change or cancel routine appointments. An integrated system is more efficient, cost-effective and leads to better health outcomes. For example, Kaiser Permanente members are less likely to suffer heart attacks and strokes because of our success in improving their hypertension (high blood pressure) control rates. Through a system-wide, five-step action plan, Kaiser Permanente has increased Colorado member hypertension control rates from 61 percent to 82.6 percent (nationally, blood pressure control rates hover around 50 percent) since 2008. We understand that physician choice is important. That’s exactly what the Kaiser Permanente network offers in Northern Colorado. Our members can select a physician practicing in one of our three medical offices or choose a physician from our network of more than 400 community providers, including Banner Health and affiliated physicians in Weld and Larimer counties. Hospital care is coordinated at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, and will be expanded to Fort Collins in August 2015 with the opening of the Banner Fort Collins Medical Center. Kaiser Permanente’s partnership with Banner Health is truly unique. We have linked our electronic medical records together to share information across all levels of treatment and coordinate patient care accordingly. This linkage gives primary and specialty care providers access to a patient’s entire medical history. We chose to partner with Banner Health because the organization shares our commitment to quality. In fact, North Colorado Medical Center was recently awarded 11 5-Star recognitions in six different service lines and McKee Medical Center six 5-Star recognitions in four different service lines from Healthgrades in its “American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2014: Healthgrades Report to the Nation”. In Northern Colorado, Kaiser Permanente offers the widest range of affordable commercial coverage plans for employers, families and individuals on the Connect for Health Colorado exchange. Larimer and Weld County residents are also eligible to enroll in Kaiser Permanente’s 5-star rated Medicare Advantage plans. The 5-Star ranking is the highest rank awarded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. As Colorado’s largest nonprofit health plan, I think it’s important to mention that Kaiser Permanente is dedicated to giving back to the communities we serve. In 2014 Kaiser Permanente gave $2,000,000 through our community benefit and community relations programs in Northern Colorado. Kaiser Permanente recently issued $1.4 million to 21 Colorado school districts through our Thriving Schools campaign in an effort to make good health a part of everyday life at school. Poudre School District is the recipient of a $100,000 Thriving Schools grant and will use this funding to improve staff and student wellness through projects such as movement break videos, bike fix-it stations at high schools and standing desks for employees. Kaiser Permanente also gave an $85,000 grant to the City of Greeley to develop greater infrastructure for safe bicycling routes. It’s true that healthy communities foster healthy lifestyles. Kaiser Permanente is at the forefront of implementing strategies that offer consumers greater innovation, convenience, care coordination and community health and wellness education, right here in Northern Colorado. Thank you for your continued support. Jason Tacha Executive Director of Northern Colorado Operations, Kaiser Permanente

A CLEAR VISION FOR NORTHERN COLORADO The Eye Center of Northern Colorado has been a part of the Fort Collins and Loveland communities for almost 50 years. Over that time, the practice has performed more than 50,000 procedures to help give Coloradans more visual freedom. Eye Center of Northern Colorado has 3 offices: the main office in Fort Collins, and two satellite offices in Loveland, but the role they play in the Northern Colorado extends far beyond the boundaries of these two cities. The dedication to Northern Colorado is evident in the partnerships that Eye Center has created within the community to better serve the patients who also call the area their home. The practice is the eye care provider for Colorado State University in Fort Collins, the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, and also the LASIK provider for the Colorado Eagles professional hockey team. The Eye Center is also a pillar of community business as a proud member of the Downtown Business Association, Fort Collins Chamber of Commerce, The Gardens at Spring Creek, and many

doctors within the practice offer specialties and experience across the board from consultative optometry to various surgical procedures, including pediatric trained optometrists. These doctors have specific training and special skills to best assess, treat, and effectively communicate with children as patients. Regardless of the fellowship trained subspecialty, the Eye Center doctors are at the forefront of their respective fields. Not only does their training and work speak for itself, but the doctors who work in the practice truly take the “live here, practice here” approach to their work. The

They also partnered with the Fort Collins Museum of Art to sponsor Free First Fridays for the popular Gallery Walk in downtown Fort Collins. Their partnerships extend well into the largest community pillars in Northern Colorado, so it is no surprise that the Eye Center of Northern Colorado has been around for nearly half of a century. “Our community partnerships are at the center of everything we do,” said marketing director Patrick Rosen. “We care not only for our patients, but the community that we are all a part of.” Eye Center of Northern Colorado has become a prominent participant in Northern Colorado culture, and is probably best known for their impressive resume for LASIK eye procedures. They offer the best in care with two optometrists and eleven ophthalmologists, who have completed fellowship training in their various subspecialty areas of practice. Eye Center’s many subspecialists have chosen to make Northern Colorado their home and bring their expertise and talents to the patients of the area. “All of our docs live and practice in Fort Collins,” said Rosen. “That’s pretty cool.” Their expertise extends far beyond even the doctors. The Eye Center boasts state of the art technology, leading the state in perfecting new technologies and techniques, including laser assisted cataract surgery and bladeless LASIK. Patients are literally being treated using the most advanced technology in the state. Eye Center values partnering with other prominent business members of the community to make our collective home a better place to live and work. By working together and pooling the collective expertise and experience from different fields, Eye Center contributes to various charities and other community building organizations to help work towards a better place to call home.

Health care is an overwhelmingly large issue, especially with the constantly changing and evolving landscape of care, technology, insurance, philosophy, and new research. So how do we make sense of it all?

2015 HEALT On both the national stage and right here in Northern Colorado, there are some trends happening that are worth paying attention to. While this list only begins to scratch the surface of all of the changes and noteworthy trends happening in the coming year, it is a place to start understanding the things that might be affecting you, your loved ones, and the shifting landscape of health care.

options for the better (because more competition and options are always beneficial for consumers), it will also make things more confusing for a while until we all get used to the new lay of the land. Northern Colorado is experiencing a population boom that seems to be just getting started, and the associated brick and mortar explosion will most likely continue to gain momentum as the demand grows.

SHOPPING AROUND

This trend really boils down to the fact that there are more facilities opening in Northern Colorado from providers relatively new to the area. This is the first time that Fort Collins will boast multiple hospitals, following the lead set by Loveland in 2007. While it is undeniable that this will change the health care

With the new players in the NoCo game, the opportunity to shop around for better processes, more experienced specialists, and differing opinions on care is easier than ever. While this won’t be a realistic step in every case, it does potentially open the door for better, less expensive, quicker care for the consumer. The

interplay of new insurance options and new providers means consumers should be looking at different options and what fits in best for their lifestyles and particular needs. You don’t have to go too far in Northern Colorado to meet someone who has already saved a lot of money, time, or stress by becoming educated and shopping around for their health care. INTEROPERABILITY OF MEDICAL RECORDS AND TECHNOLOGY Everything involved in treatment and care has become more automated and streamlined, moving away from manual input, paper records, and eliminating chances for human error. This reliance on connected technology is more of a continuing trend within the industry than a new revolutionary change. The incor-

poration of automated, real-time monitoring equipment into hospital environments has been an ongoing process, starting with facility remodels, new construction, and implementation of systemwide technologies. All of the passive monitoring devices interact with the digital records systems that have become standard for every medical enterprise. The problem arises when the records systems between different medical practices or organizations, or the devices themselves, and the medical records do not share a common language and thus cannot easily share information. This lack of interoperability becomes more of a concern as more devices and pieces of patient records come online and go digital. While the idea of some kind of devastating virus, power outage, or other catastrophic event is an obvious threat, the more

mundane challenges of transferring records between physicians, critical information being lost during patient care, or simply the delay in translating the information between systems compromising the standard of care are a more likely failure of the system. This will continue to be a more common issue as automated digital systems are relied upon more extensively, and will only be resolved when a governing standard is adopted to create a universal language for the technologies of the field. While this list won’t make a prediction on the exact nature of the changes to come, the upcoming political decisions to be made mean that Americans need to be better informed about their needs and how new legislation will protect those necessary services. Propaganda from various parties — politically based, special interest based, or otherwise biased toward one viewpoint or another – will abound in the next year, so an informed consumer base is a trend that is necessary for a successful health care system. PATIENT/PHYSICIAN RELATIONSHIPS With the industry in flux, information is becoming more digitized and impersonal. The industry is seeing a general shift to

fects of these changes will impact Coloradans this year. The relationship between patient and physician has become increasingly Spartan and based solely upon diagnoses for a specific illness or injuries. Patients often seek care from several of the many doctors in a single practice, or in many cases simply rely on the services of an urgent care or minute clinic facility instead of a primary physician. The atrophy of the relationship between the physician and the patient puts an inherent responsibility on the patient to truly understand their own medical history, and to have an insight into what physicians need to know in order to treat the patient successfully. Gone are the days of the country doctor who has a lifetime’s worth of experience

While it is too early to say whether the new system and regulations are a success or a failure, it has changed the health care landscape by opening options for some individuals, closing options for others, and forcing health care providers to change their business and care models. The relationship between providers and patients is changing on a fundamental level. This is another trend that has not been a sudden change but slowly building. As technology improves and more practices are absorbed into the large medical systems, this trend will continue to gain traction, fundamentally changing the old model.

Depending on their insurance and doctor, residents will be able to choose between Banner Health’s new facility on Harmony Road or Poudre Valley Hospital, the facility that has served the city since 1925. Health care competition is nothing new in Northern Colorado as Banner and University of Colorado Health — formerly Poudre Valley Health System — have battled for market share for years. In 2007, PVHS poked Banner when it opened Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, home of Banner’s McKee Medical Center. Banner jabbed back by opening new clinics in Fort Collins and forging an exclusive agreement with Kaiser Permanente when the insurance company and care provider jumped into the market two years ago. Now, Banner and UCHealth plan to spend more than a quarter-billion dollars on bricks and mortar in Northern Colorado, construction that raises the stakes for both systems. Banner broke ground in October 2014 on what will become a 28-acre medical campus officially called Banner Fort Collins Medical Center.

Driven by the federal Affordable Care Act that added thousands of Coloradans to the insurance rolls, health care reform has kicked off an expansion race that both systems deny has anything to do with wresting health care dollars from the other and everything to do with meeting patients’ needs more efficiently. The ACA has put “hundreds of thousands of people (nationwide) with insurance into the system,” said Steven Summer, CEO of the Colorado Hospital Association. “That means they will make their own decisions about where they go for health care as opposed to when they were uninsured. People want to go to nice facilities” with updated technology and the latest amenities. In today’s changing health care landscape, health systems are being asked to do more, do it better and do it for less money. Oftentimes, that means building new facilities to accommodate changing technology, delivering care more conveniently and taking advantage of efficiencies, Summer said. UCHealth opened its new $20 million cancer center in June 2014, and PVH is gearing up for a $102 million renovation

UCHEALTH CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS Poudre Valley Hospital $102 million •• Demolition of A building, the oldest portion of PVH •• New emergency department •• Remodeled neonatal intensive care unit •• New helicopter landing pad on roof •• Expanded orthopedic unit

and construction of a $12.3 million freestanding emergency department at 4674 Snow Mesa Drive, a stone’s throw from Banner’s new hospital. The 17,000-square-foot emergency center will have 12 private rooms, an around-the-clock pharmacy and outpatient lab services, which would be relocated from the existing Redstone building on the Harmony Road campus. The move is an attempt by University of Colorado Health to provide easier access to emergency services for residents living in south Fort Collins, Timnath and Windsor. It probably didn’t hurt that it would compete with Banner’s emergency department. PVH’s long-awaited expansion includes an emergency department to replace a facility that today sees many more patients than it was built for; an expanded neonatal intensive care unit for the sickest babies; a helicopter landing zone on the roof; a larger orthopedic unit to repair aging baby boomers’ worn-out knees and hips; a new lab and other improvements.

Health care competition is nothing new in Northern Colorado as Banner and University of Colorado Health — formerly Poudre Valley Health System — have battled for market share for years. The project is expected to begin this in March 2015. PVH deconstructed the building’s interior earlier this year but doesn’t want to raze the building and leave a big, unsightly hole until the new building has all its approvals in place and is ready to go, CEO Kevin Unger said. The hospital has the entire $102 million socked away and will not have to borrow to build, he said. GAME CHANGER For health care in Northern Colorado, Kaiser Permanente’s arrival has been a game changer. The insurance company and care provider is often held up nationally as a successful health care model that keeps costs down while providing quality care. 26 • 2015 Northern Colorado Medical Directory

Kaiser, which restricts treatment to its approved list of physicians and hospitals, opened its first Fort Collins clinic on Harmony Road in 2012. It also signed an exclusive contract with Banner Health, meaning its members could also be treated by Banner doctors and at Banner hospitals, except in an emergency, when patients should go to the nearest hospital. For many prospective members, the lack of a Banner hospital in northern Larimer County proved to be a barrier to signing up for Kaiser coverage. That changed when Banner announced it would build the 24-bed hospital and medical office building close to Kaiser’s Fort Collins clinic. The 145,000-square-foot, two-story hospital includes an emergency department, 24 inpatient beds, labor and delivery rooms, medical imaging, women’s services, and surgical and lab services at the intersection of Harmony Road and Lady Moon Drive. “That’s why we’ve seen the growth in Fort Collins,” said Jason Tacha, executive director of Kaiser’s operations for Northern Colorado. “We’ve heard feedback in terms of why people were not as interested in selecting us was lack of convenience to specialty care and the hospital. We do know that now with that barrier being eliminated . . . we do suspect we will continue to see strong growth in Fort Collins.” Kaiser arrived in the market with about 5,000 members. Today it has more than 27,000, with most of that growth coming in Fort Collins among residents buying insurance through Connect for Health Colorado, Tacha said. Its premiums were among the least expensive plans offered through the state health care exchange. The alliance has helped strengthen Banner’s position, particularly in northern Larimer County. “With the projected growth of Fort Collins, the hospital is smack dab in the middle,” said Rick Sutton, CEO of Banner’s three Northern Colorado hospitals. “It is in the perfect position for the growth that is happening.” Like Tacha, Sutton believes the new hospital makes a difference for potential Kaiser customers. “People want to be cared for locally, and having the Fort Collins hospital is a big reason we are seeing that growth,” he said. “No one in the country has the secret sauce to the health care model, but Kaiser Permanente comes

as close as one can.” Banner is also investing nearly $3 million in expanding the lab at McKee Medical Center that will serve as a regional destination for handling microbiology tests for all of its Northern Colorado hospitals. It also plans $60 million in renovation projects at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. PVH CHANGES As Poudre Valley Hospital completes renovations, the biggest change patients will see is a new emergency department. PVH’s existing emergency room was built to treat 25,000 patients per year. Last year, it treated about 54,000, exceeding industry standards that recommend about 1,500 visits per bed. Many of the existing ER’s beds are in rooms with three or four bays, separated only by a curtain, many times putting a pediatric patient next to a drunk or high patient. The new emergency department will feature 36 private rooms, including 12 beds in a clinical observation unit where patients can go while doctors are deciding whether a patient will be discharged or admitted. Unger said the new ER will provide the hospital with a more functional space, allowing staff to reduce wait time and costs. 28 • 2015 Northern Colorado Medical Directory

PVH has already cut its ER wait time from 80 minutes to 40 by analyzing its processes and creating treatment rooms that are all stocked the same so staff don’t have to search for equipment. PVH is focused on efficiencies and driving down the cost of care as it braces for changes in health care reimbursements. Whether such efforts will translate into reduced hospital bills is still unknown. Already, emergency room efficiencies have allowed the hospital to trim staffing by eight full-time positions and cut a patient’s average length of stay in the emergency room from 220 minutes to 138 minutes. In the process, patient satisfaction has risen 6 percent, Unger said. The existing ER will become an infusion therapy center that will move from the second floor to provide easier access for patients coming and going. CARE FOR THE SICKEST BABIES Emily Petersen, mother of three girls including 3-year-old twins who were born 11 weeks early, said planned changes in Poudre Valley Hospital’s NICU will make a world of difference for families of premature and sick babies. Currently, babies in the NICU are treated in a large room separated only by curtains. The individual treatment areas

are cramped with equipment, a crib and often only one chair for family. In the new wing, babies will have private rooms that offer plenty of room for families and the ability to control noise and light. “The new one will be so much better than what we had,” said Suzanne Richmond, a neonatal nurse for 36 years. “It will be awesome. Every parent is so excited about the possibility of staying with their baby. It’s such a nice option, especially for parents who live far away.” Petersen had nothing but praise for the NICU nurses and doctors but said she and her husband — along with one set of grandparents — were often with the babies in cramped quarters. The unit had recliners that could have been laid down to make a bed, “but they wouldn’t fit in our space,” she said. “To be able to have a place you could just lay down and rest and close your eyes would have been transformative.” Petersen and her husband live in Johnstown and would make the 30-minute drive to the hospital twice each day. “I was so terrified that if I left and went to sleep” something terrible would happen when she wouldn’t be there. The twins, Lilly and Nora, spent 15 weeks in the NICU but are now 3 years old and healthy and happy.

Modern medicine, good old-fashioned patient care The past few years have seen massive shake-ups in the health care industry, both nationally and locally. It has changed not only the conversation about care, providers, facilities, access, and cost, but also the relationship between physicians and their patients. With the addition of the Affordable Care Act last year, and now a new hospital opening its doors this year, the healthcare landscape in the Choice City is quickly changing and the familiar faces of the industry are being lost in a sea of new and unfamiliar names. Fort Collins is not quite what most people would consider the big city, but it is a far cry from the small town it once was. Despite all of the changes to the local healthcare industry, there are some members of the community that remain steadfast. Rocky Mountain Family Physicians has been a staple of the Fort Collins health community for over 25 years. While they have changed with the times just like the city around them, they have retained much of their small town sensibility when it comes to the relationships with their patients. Patient care is and always has been the cornerstone of the independent practitioner. Rocky Mountain Family Physicians is no exception to this rule, and the passion of this conviction is apparent when speaking to one of its remaining founders, Dr. David Cranor. “We are physicians, and our patients are our priority. We make bad business decisions often, in order to deliver better quality patient care.” Dr. Cranor is an evangelist of sorts, championing the kind of patient care now seen as old school. “I know my patients. Some of them have been with me for years, and I know everything about their history. But I think working towards this kind of relationship is important with every patient who walks through the door to see me.”

He emphasizes the kind of trust and familiarity between patients and physicians that is uncommon in the modern era of electronic records, impersonal care regimens, large organizations with exchangeable doctors, and consultation only when the patient is ailing. Dr. Cranor believes in the power of knowledge. Not just the knowledge that comes from textbooks and the latest technology, but the knowledge that comes from serving his community as a physician for over 25 years. He fears that

this type of intimate knowledge about a patient is slowly being pushed aside for more automated processes. “Nothing can replace human experience and the intuition that comes from actually being a physician. We have so many tools at our disposal these days, and they can help us in many ways, but they are not a substitute for a good doctor.” Rocky Mountain Family Physicians is one of the locally owned, hometown legacies that remains a staple of the Fort Collins community. In 2015, Dr. Cranor and his staff maintain the values of strong relationships, responsible care, and personal attention that have allowed them to remain a member of the Fort Collins healthcare community since 1986. Their roots as small town, independent doctors still shine through, incorporating the best of the old school and the new to create a truly patient-based physician care.

“We are physicians, and our patients are our priority. We make bad business decisions often, in order to deliver better quality patient care.”

In 2015, Fort Collins will undergo massive changes in its progress with growth and evolution toward becoming a true metropolitan center. It is no secret that Fort Collins is one of the best places in the country to call home, making appearances on any number of lists naming the top cities to live in over the last decade. In the past few years, the population of the rest of the country has listened, moving en masse to the Northern Colorado region. With this new population comes new housing developments, new retail centers, and a new hospital: Banner Health’s Fort Collins Medical Center. The facility The brand new, state-of-the-art facility is not only a destination for world class medical care right here in our backyard, it is a beautiful destination on the south end of town for medical needs of the region. This is the 28th hospital in the Banner Health System, and as such it exudes the kind of refined sophistication that comes with extensive experience. Banner Health’s Fort Collins Medical Center benefits from every facility that has come before it,

accounting for every possible detail and troublesaving measure. The hospital is a large self-contained facility, though not so large that it would be easy to get lost within confines. The layout is logical, with separate wings dedicated to different areas of care. For example, the emergency services and the regular Banner Health Clinic are located exactly opposite of one another on the ground floor. Part of the beauty of the design is that it accommodates the emergency and the clinic

services equally. The many specialists practicing in the new facility are accessible both quickly and easily. Those requiring the care of multiple doctors do not need to trek across town to different facilities, in most cases. Many specialists are housed within the Fort Collins Medical Center building, providing a convenient solution for patients, especially those requiring extensive and complicated care. The building itself is beautifully detailed. Elements of the design are inspired by our Northern Colorado environment, from wooden ceiling panels that resemble stands of aspens, to aspen leaf patterns in the frosted glass, to rock detailing throughout the building. Little pieces of Colorado are incorporated into the facility effortlessly, making it feel truly like a comfortable almost-home. The red rock lining the entryway in the main lobby brings the feeling of the foothills into the halls of the hospital and sets the tone for the facility. While some measures have been taken to welcome the feeling of the outdoors in, other measures have been taken to keep the outdoors more safe and welcoming for patients and their families. Small details like the heated sidewalks and walkways around the building become major benefits during the long Colorado winter. Banner Health has taken into account that living in Colorado means that sometimes the weather impacts our ability to get out and about safely. Snow is a reality of life here, but people need access to medical care in all seasons. The heated walkways ensure safety on the way into the hospital, where snow and ice have no chance and the walking areas are clear and dry. The many floor-to-ceiling windows in the hallways provide lovely views as well as a sense of greenery and natural beauty, courtesy of our ever-present mountain vistas and the gardens full of native plants right outside the windows. The rooms themselves incorporate lots of natural light, using big windows whenever possible to create big, airy, welcoming spaces for the patients. striking in the labor and delivery rooms, which feel more like rooms in a home than in a hospital. One of the details that is easy to miss while visiting the hospital is one of comfort and would be most evident if it was not in practice. The sound system throughout the hospital has been engineered and calibrated to provide a low level of white noise, eliminating the echoing, ambient noise of a hospital facility and replacing it with soft music. adjusts itself throughout the day and night, getting louder at peak activity times and softer in the depths of the relatively silent night. This provides a sense of comfort for the patients and visitors, allowing for relaxation without the disturbance of unexpected loud noises. In the emergency department, there is special attention to serving the patients in the most comfortable and care-first manner possible. While every emergency room has a policy of prioritizing the most 36 • 2015 Northern Colorado Medical Directory

life-threatening situations, Banner Health has made a commitment across its entire hospital network to 30 minutes from door to doctor. This means that, barring a truly out-of-the-ordinary circumstance, a patient can expect to be seen within 30 minutes of checking in at the emergency department. One of the things that is so remarkable about this emergency department is that when patients are being seen by one of the medical stafff, they will be in a private ward. The emergency cases are not

out in a communal open ward, but each patient is seen within enclosed walls, protecting the safety, security, and privacy of both the patients and their loved ones who may be with them at the hospital. One detail provided exclusively for the comfort and peace of mind of the families of patients is that each patient is assigned a number upon intake, and this number stays with the patient throughout the duration of their care. There are monitors in the waiting rooms, the cafeteria, lobbies, and other areas of the hospital. The monitors are tuned to a patient tracking system, which displays the numbers associated with the patients, and where they are located within the hospital. This system allows families the peace of mind to leave the immediate waiting area, which is frequently very stressful, and know that as soon as their loved one is out of surgery, done with a procedure, or has been moved to another department, they will be notified. It is this collection of small details that really sets

the Fort Collins Medical Center apart from any number of other hospitals, both in Northern Colorado and throughout the country.

The labor and delivery suites are full of natural light and have space to accommodate mother, baby and visiting family members comfortably.

The new patient rooms feature large windows overlooking the courtyard, beautiful sliding frosted glass doors and the TeleAcute monitoring system.

While this is not an exhaustive list, some of Banner Health’s best and brightest shared some of the things that set them amongst the top tier of medical professionals in the country.

TeleAcute Care While many local hospitals include this safety feature in their intensive care units, Banner Fort Collins Medical Center is the only hospital in Northern Colorado to offer this incredible feature for every patient of the hospital. Every room is equipped with this system, which monitors the vital stats, test results, and other patient information. The information is monitored in real time from a remote location by nurses, whose responsibility is to track the trends in patient statistics, looking for patterns or warning signs of impending trouble. These nurses act as a second layer of defense; a safety net and backup for emergency or unexpected situations. They are not in

place as primary caregivers, and in no way replace the hands-on care of the doctors and nurses on site. This system is all about patient peace of mind. While the remote monitoring is usually carried out passively, and the patients themselves may never know it is going on, if an emergency situation arises direct contact can be initiated by the remote monitoring center or by the medical staff in the room. Every room is equipped with a screen, speaker, and camera, which allow the remote nurse and the patient to speak face to face. This allows for an outside consultation at the literal push of a button by the medical staff, and a first-hand look at the patient by the remote staff if they become aware of an adverse trend or other situation that causes alarm. This real-time, round-the-clock tracking is a second layer of defense and takes the care in Banner’s FCMC facility from excellent to truly exceptional.

Choosing the RIGHT doctor Choosing a medical professional to care for you and your family can be a daunting task. Caregivers impact health directly, can have significant implications on the financial future of patients and their families, and can cause or alleviate incredible amounts of stress in everyday life as well as in the most difficult circumstances most of us will ever face. Medical professionals don’t just treat our pain and suffering when we need an injury tended or an illness treated. They are the givers of advice, the providers of comfort, the charters of our path toward wellness, and often they are also the first shoulder we cry on and the first hug we receive in the saddest of times. The importance of a trusting relationship between a medical professional and patient cannot be overstated. Aside from the trust necessary as a patient to simply believe in the medical training and expertise of professionals, there is also a necessary lowering of barriers and sharing of personal and private information in order to facilitate this care. A medical professional has access to

nearly all that a person holds dear to themselves. This is no small responsibility, and it is one that is taken very seriously by professionals in the field. Whether it is a primary care physician, a pediatrician for your children, an oncologist, or another specialist to treat a specific ailment, choosing a doctor is never easy. While most of us in the modern health care system in our country have our decisions shaped in large part by insurance providers, there is still decision making necessary within one’s network of physicians. Especially in places like Northern Colorado where there are many options for medical care, knowing what is important to look for in a physician is very important.

“Patients need to trust, which means physicians need to be open, available, honest, and help deliver a positive experience.”

“Your provider should show natural interest and a curiosity in who you are, and what your ‘story’ reveals to them.” For the sake of argument, assume that all of the necessary prerequisites for choosing a medical professional, like insurance, location, good legal standing, and appropriate licensure, are all taken care of, satisfying the criteria. When it really gets down to the dynamics of the relationship between the physician and the patient, one thing stands out above the rest — the need to ask questions. Asking questions is probably the most important advice when choosing a doctor, even according tow the doctors themselves. Any good doctor puts the needs and experience of the patient first and foremost. As a patient, being proactive with your health helps doctors and providers make sure you not only get the best care, but also have a positive experience with your doctor. Taking a passive approach – not being invested in your health or educated on your specific needs – makes it difficult for doctors to do the same. Communication, trust, and a collaborative approach to your health should be priorities when choosing the right doctor. “Patients need to trust, which means physicians need to be open, available, honest, and help deliver a positive experience. This is a shift in paradigm from what many patients may be used to, but it is vitally important for patients and providers to have mutual trust,” says Dr. Jay R. Kurth, a family practice physician with Banner Health. “The trust especially comes into play when we ask for patient histories, and the clear communication

on diet, exercise, lifestyle, and drugs. If the patient is not forthcoming with this information, it can have real negative impacts on treatment.” Dr. Jennifer Main, an internal medicine physician treating patients in Fort Collins’ Colland Drive Banner Health Clinic, makes another vital point. “It is important to patient care that a physician is not only competent, but engaged and invested in you as the patient. Your provider should show natural interest and a curiosity in who you are, and what your ‘story’ reveals to them. They should also listen to your input and opinions, and attempt to include you in their problem solving. A physician should treat the patient as a vital teammate in pursuit of a shared goal: your health and well-being. This kind of engagement is not only important because it demonstrates to the patient that the physician actually cares, but it is more likely to create a relaxed atmosphere where the patient feels they can share sometimes intimate and uncomfortable details.” Dr. Antonio Barbera, an obstetrician/ gynecologist practicing out of Banner

Health’s new Fort Collins Medical Center, emphasized the trust inherent in his specialty. “Trust is the most important factor in any good relationship, and that patient/doctor relationship is no different. Open communication based on reciprocal respect is the key to good care. Personalized care is so important, especially in my field. Being able to listen to patients’ needs, and being able to treat every patient with compassion is essential. Transparent care, where the patient knows why the physician is making the decisions they are making, is one of the biggest factors of gaining that trust. I try to always do my best to put my patients at ease, and to look at them as a whole person, including body and spirit, and not to look at them as a series of stagnant compartmentalized symptoms.” “When you meet a doctor and you feel you can communicate effectively and easily, and have the doctor understand your needs, care about addressing them, and you feel that in your time with them you have all of his or her attention, this is a doctor you want to keep. He/she will do his/her best for you.”

How long have you been with Banner?

I joined the Banner Health Clinic, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology in Greeley in August 2014. I began practicing in Fort Collins in February 2015 and I am very excited to be involved in the opening of the new Banner Fort Collins Medical Center in April 2015. My office will be at the Banner Health Center on the Banner Fort Collins Medical Center campus.

Since 2012. I have been practicing in Northern Colorado since 1998.

What is your area of expertise/specialty?

I am an obstetrician/gynecologist. I am the founder and world leader on the use of transperineal ultrasound in the assessment of fetal head descent in the birth canal during the second stage of labor. What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I like to be able to place my patients at ease to allow them to always be themselves. I invite them to never apologize for being emotional and to feel free to share their feelings with me. It does not matter if the encounter with my patients is related to a small issue: I try to always connect with the soul of the person in front of me. It is surprising how often small complaints are only the tip of an iceberg that needs deeper attention. What is your favorite part of living here in Northern Colorado?

I have been in Colorado for a total of 15 years now but the unique geography of this area was new to me. The beauty of this geography is absolutely amazing, from lakes to rivers, from prairies to mountains. I definitely miss the ocean of my motherland Sicily though.

Arnold E. Pfahnl, MD, PhD, FACC, FHRS

I started working for Banner in November of 2014.

How long have you been with Banner?

I have been with Banner Health since July 2014.

What is your area of expertise/specialty?

What is your area of expertise/specialty?

How long have you been with Banner?

I am a board certified orthopedic surgeon. I did do a sports medicine/arthroscopy fellowship but I enjoy doing general orthopedics. This means that I take care of a variety of orthopedic problems including sports injuries, arthroscopy, ACL surgery, meniscus surgery, rotator cuff repairs, shoulder instability, hand surgery, fracture surgery, and joint replacement of the shoulder, knee, and hip. Why did you decide to become a doctor?

My father was a physician. Although he always tried to get me to do something else, I first became intrigued with the human body in my high school biology and physiology classes. I was exposed first hand to the job satisfaction that my father enjoyed and wanted something similar. What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The best, most rewarding part of my job is being able to physically help my patients improve their quality of life and return to physical independence. There is nothing better than feeling and seeing true gratitude from a patient after surgery. That’s what keeps me going to work.

6.6 years Cardiac Electrophysiology Why did you decide to become a cardiologist?

Even before medical school I was fascinated by the mechanical and electrical systems of the heart. I find it fascinating that the systems of the heart are complex but can be understood in a very logical way. Cardiology as a specialty sits on the border between medicine and surgery. In medicine you see patients, make a diagnosis but often are unable to provide a cure. In surgery, on the other hand, you can often fix the problem. In cardiology, rapid technological advances including the ability to perform complex procedures have the ability to significantly improve patients’ lives and sometimes even cure heart problems. What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I value the one-on-one contact I have with patients. I feel I am a part of my patients’ lives, which is a very special privilege for me. What is the hardest part of your job?

Sometimes I don’t have an immediate answer to a problem, which means waiting until I have the all information to make the best decision for the patient. What is something you wish patients parents of patients knew?

I will take the time to listen and provide the best care possible.

What is your area of expertise/specialty?

I specialize in gastroenterology. Why did you decide to become a doctor?

I first became interested in medicine because I enjoy the science behind it. As part of my development as a physician I became involved in the research of liver disease. While this intrigued me, I missed being around and caring for patients. Most of all I find solace in being able to reduce the fears patients may have when they are sick and need a compassionate caregiver. What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is being able to share in my patients’ stories about their health and then helping them to get on a track to wellness. What is the hardest part of your job?

The hardest part of my job is breaking bad news in regard to diagnoses that are life changing and affect entire families. What is your favorite part of living here in Northern Colorado?

I love the laid-back lifestyle, the kindness of the people and being close to the area where I grew up. Tell us about your family.

Our family moved to Northern Colorado last year. I have three amazing children and a wonderful wife who serve to make every day the greatest.

Healthy pet, happy family Snuggle buddy. Therapist. Guardian. Best friend. There are many ways that people describe their pet. A dog will eagerly greet you with a wagging tail no matter how bad your day at work was. A cat won’t think twice about curling up and warming your lap on a late night of Netflix. Oftentimes, a pet can be one of the most stable, loving, and cherished members of a family. But what people don’t often think about is how the health of their beloved pet has a direct impact on the rest of their family. When Dr. Heather Steyn opened Advanced Animal Care of Colorado, her vision was to provide a facility that allowed for us to take care of our pets the same way that we take care of ourselves. The reality is that most pets have the same routine every day, they don’t have their teeth cleaned regularly, miss important vaccinations, or live with chronic pain. Because animals are not as good at communicating their distress, often these issues will go unaddressed. However, in many ways animal health care is not all that different from human health care. While humans can only do their best for their beloved animal companions, sometimes the best method of caring for your pet is to take cues from the way we take care of ourselves.

Maintaining Wellness In human medicine, we are encouraged to be proactive about our health. Annual physicals, keeping vaccinations up to date, and a healthy lifestyle are all part of maintaining good health. The same thing holds true with our pets. Annual wellness visits, updating vaccinations, managing injuries, treating age related illnesses and following a good exercise and diet plan all insure that your four legged family members will be a part of your family for years to come. Advanced Animal Care encourages your pet’s wellness, and gives them access to the equivalent of their own gym membership. DogTales daycare offers your pups an opportunity to not only maintain an active lifestyle, but also to foster good social behaviors. The Splash program offers a unique opportunity for a great cardio workout for your dog in the indoor pool, and allows dogs of many physical ability levels to get great exercise while having minimal impact on joints – a great option for injured or aging pets. 74 • 2015 Northern Colorado Medical Directory

Rehabilitation Just like humans, our pets can suffer pain from injuries and other chronic conditions that severely impact their quality of life. While we might think of scheduling an acupuncture or massage appointment for ourselves, the idea of treating our pets’ pain isn’t always top of mind. Dr. Elizabeth Jobe specializes in rehabilitation, conditioning, and physical therapy at Advanced Animal Care. As a former collegiate soccer player, Dr. Jobe knows firsthand how injuries and the rehabilitation process can affect quality of life. “Physical therapy is a regular part of recommended care for ourselves, whether rehabilitating an injury or maintaining strength and mobility in older age,” says Dr. Jobe. “We can offer that same quality of care and pain management for

ing to understand health insurance policies to cover their family. Many people overlook insuring the four-legged members of their family as well. “People have enough trouble wrapping their head around their own insurance, let alone their pets’ insurance,” says Practice Manager Robin Mildrum. Pet insurance works very similarly to human health insurance. Deductibles, premiums, exclusions, and co-pay are terms that apply in much the same way. As veterinary medicine becomes more sophisticated and targeted, costs of procedures and treatments becomes increasingly more expensive. Now, with the availability of pet health insurance, financial worries don’t have to encumber pet care decisions.

Zoonotic Diseases Keeping your pet disease-free is not only for the safety and wellbeing of your furry friend, but also for the rest of your family too.

While humans can only do their best for their beloved animal companions, sometimes the best method of caring for your pet is to take cues from the way we take care of ourselves. our furry friends, who deserve a diagnosis and the therapy modalities that we have come to expect for ourselves.” Jobe has too often witnessed pets that are enduring chronic pain from arthritis or previous injuries that went untreated or were not rehabilitated after surgery. Many times, owners are unaware that their pet is suffering through pain, thinking it is just “old age” or an injury that will heal with time. The reality is that many pets don’t have to live with physical disability or pain with the proper treatment, and their quality of life can be improved at any age for a happier purr or wag.

Insurance With all of the changes in the health landscape in the last couple years, many people are still try-

Diseases that can cross over from your pet to your human family members are called zoonotic diseases, and some of them are cause for serious concern. Rabies, Leptospirosis, Toxoplasmosis and Giardia are among some of the many diseases and parasites that can be transmitted from pets to people. While the transmission of diseases and parasites between dogs, cats, and humans is relatively rare, when it occurs it can cause serious disease in people, especially young children, the elderly, and those who are immunosuppressed. Prevention of zoonotic disease can be as easy as a vaccine, yearly deworming, and a monthly flea and tick medication. Keeping your pets treated and checked regularly will ensure that all of your family members, whether they have two or four legs, will stay happy and healthy.
