A peek at the week ahead…

Headteacher’s Round-Up Welcome to our first edition of the BHSA Bugle! We are hoping that our Bugle newsletter will arrive in your inbox every Wednesday afternoon and will serve as a noticeboard for upcoming events, fixtures and information. Today our girls have had their school photographs taken and they look wonderful; another date will be released shortly for photographs with older siblings from our senior school. On another note, letters will be sent home to Reception to Year 5 (only) girls requesting your permission for flu immunisations. If you do not return the form by 1st October, then the authority will not be able to administer the oral immunisation. And finally, Miss Capes has sadly had to call off the Year 4, 5, 6 Cross Country fixture tomorrow due to the “apocalyptic weather forecast” (her words). Frustration all round. Attached to this BHSA Bugle newsletter are our curriculum plans for our Project eXplore topics and also my slides from my welcome evenings last week.

A peek at the week ahead…

Headteacher’s Round-Up A superb week of learning with all classes now fully immersed in their Project eXplore work, making links between all areas of the curriculum and finding out about how important these cross-curricular skills are in the real world. It is such a privilege hearing the girls talking about their learning and telling me what it is they’re going to find out next! The girls have begun recording their learning in their books now and our huge school emphasis on independence and taking responsibility for their own learning is tough-going but rewarding. Our girls will soon be

growing, flourishing and thinking for themselves and adapting their classwork practices effectively, in order to reach their full potential. Our daily assemblies and ‘learning together’ times have focused on the importance of rules and never giving up! Our girls are responsive and reflective and are beginning to use our ‘values’ vocabulary; so important in getting ahead in life! Finally, I could not miss this opportunity to thank our school hockey team for beating Queens School, Chester!! For the first time in 8 years! ...to say that Miss Capes was happy is an understatement …! An impressive display of tenacity, teamwork and skill with our Year 5s winning 2-1 and our Year 6s winning 4-2.

The BHSA Bugle: Junior School Headteacher’s Round-Up

A peek at the week ahead…

An incredible week in BHSA Juniors, with our girls learning about the values of never giving up, showing kindness and being a great team member; with a focus on the collaborative skills of the Giants’ puppeteers! A number of our girls (and staff) have been hit with a nasty bug this week and have had to show some of these values as they have kept going; demonstrated resilience in coping with some differences to their working week, and have supported their peers in a loving and supportive way. Our Values work continues today as we show our staff support for World Mental Health Day.

Our whole academy staff training last week on Mental Health identified some areas which promote good wellbeing and selfesteem in children: (list not exhaustive) - feeling listened to - having strong and meaningful relationships - showing kindness to others, and being shown kindness themselves - seeing and hearing positive role models - receiving praise with a focus on working hard - being encouraged to do things on their own for pleasure - waiting for something (delayed gratification) - being involved in decision making, where appropriate BHSA Junior Choir Mrs Chalmers has invited our Junior choir girls to sing on her album! Recording will take place this Friday with the song available for downloading from iTunes and Spotify. Copies of her album on CD will also be available to purchase at her independent ‘gigs’. She is so impressed with our girls, she is giving them this exciting and inspiring opportunity alongside another local school choir. If you would like any more information or indeed have any concerns about your daughter being recorded please contact the School Office. (see attached letter for more details)

Shoe Box Appeal We are supporting the Christmas Shoebox appeal again this year. Mr Ward (Mrs Moss’s father) has talked to the girls in assembly about the impact of this and how lives can be changed by donating a shoebox. We would hugely appreciate if you could support this wonderful cause. Girls will earn a merit per shoebox.

IT Notice Please be aware that our laptops are currently being upgraded and that girls’ passwords have expired and are due to be updated. Please bear with us while our ICT department completes the upgrades. There will therefore be no homework set on Firefly at this time. In addition to this, we have an exciting new web-based addition to support KS2 girls with their spellings, called ‘Spelling Shed’. (Please note that this is a free web-based tool and does not require you to purchase an app.) Further details about how your daughter/ward can access her ‘Spelling Shed’ account can be found at the end of this Bugle edition.

Class Corner

Hear from Year 6 A Peek at our Week! Both classes have thoroughly enjoyed performing their assemblies.

Project eXplore update We have been exploring the depths of the ocean and writing biographies of inspiring oceanographer, Sylvia Earle. Over the next few weeks, we will be learning about fossils and the creatures that lived in the sea millions of years ago; writing myths involving fictional deep sea monsters; exploring actual deep sea creatures that live in the depths of our seas today and discovering how James Cameron ventured to the bottom of the Marianna Trench.

Class 6R based theirs on the life and work of oceanographer, Sylvia Earle.

“You can’t not like Project eXplore!” “It’s all subjects combined in one topic.” “I’ve enjoyed learning about the Crusades, Sylvia Earle & the British Empire so far.”

Class 6M demonstrated our BHSA values.

Our favourite read... Year 6 are currently reading: ‘Cosmic’ by Frank Cottrell Boyce. “It’s really funny!” “You just can’t put it down!” “We groan when we have to stop reading! It’s so gripping!”

“It’s nice to read at the end of the day. It’s calming.”

Did You Know? Sylvia wasn’t allowed on a science project because she was a woman, so she decided to create and manage her own female expedition. For 2 weeks, Sylvia and her team lived underwater, demonstrating that the work of a women's team is just as effective as the one of a men's team.

Home Support We have been working hard to improve our arithmetic skills.

House Captains A huge congratulations to our newly appointed House Captains! “It feels special to be chosen because you know that Mrs Peace has put her trust in you.”

“It’s nice to have the responsibility of leading your house” “I was honoured to be selected.”

Each week, we complete a quiz to see how we are progressing. Please support us in this, by using the handout attached to this Bugle edition - it contains the types of arithmetic questions we will be answering in our SATs - to practise these skills at home also.

Times tables knowledge forms a huge part of arithmetic; please continue to practise these daily.

The standard of application letters was incredibly high and all who applied have been commended on this.

Dear Parent/Carer Birkenhead High School Academy Junior Choir The school choir has been invited by Mrs Chalmers to record a song alongside Bidston Avenue Primary School which will appear on her next album (visit www.twoblacksheep.co.uk to find out more). This is a very exciting opportunity to appear as part of a 120 strong choir on a track which will be released on all digital platforms and on a CD. The recording will take place on Friday 12 th October at Birkenhead High school Academy. If you do not wish your daughter/ward to take part in this recording, please contact the School Office. Please also be aware, pupils taking part will have their full names printed on the album sleeve. Although photographs will not appear as part of the album cover, they will, however, be used on social media. Therefore, please contact us if you do not wish your daughter/ward’s name and/or photograph to be used. Yours sincerely

Mrs C Peace Head of Junior School

You can now practise your spellings on the website: www.spellingshed.com. Spelling lists will appear on the website as assignments. The Spelling Shed helps you to practise spelling through games! The games have four different options for support: Easy, Medium, Hard and Extreme. Higher levels allow a higher score to be achieved but you can practise as much as you like on lower levels before trying to gain high scores. Don’t forget that you can use your honey pots to change your avatar and search for extra lists to play with. Try to practise your spellings each evening as part of your hub jobs. A hard copy of the list will be sent home if you do not have access to the internet and you will have an opportunity to play in school.

1. Go to https://play.spellingshed.com or Google: ‘Spelling Shed play’ (Please note, it works best in Google Chrome.) 2. Enter your username and password. 3. Once you have logged in, you will find your spelling list for your weekly spelling investigation. 4. Enjoy playing as part of your spelling hub job!

Shine Away Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine, Ooh let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine, Ooh let it shine. There’s a bright light shining In the world tonight. All your fears will vanish In the morning light, There’s a new horizon, There’s a brand new day, A brighter future and it’s On the way May all the love in the world come shining through, Al the dark clouds disappear from view: Let the light in your heart shine on all you do and say Let it shine, ooh, shine away. There’s a new beginning In the world tonight. There’s a new dawn breaking And the future’s bright; May we each find blessing Now it’s Christmas time, Through all our lives may the Good light shine May all the love……. (twice) …shine away, shine away.

Song for a Winter’s Night Summers gone now, Daylight dims. Watching here how snow falls in the park. Yesterday’s like a dream. A memory in my head, that’s fading in the dark. Winter’s here, Cold and bare. Moonlight shimmers in the stillness of the night. Frozen times, wintry skies. A time for reflection, when the stars are shining bright. Hear the music, Sing our song, Play it time and time again to make you strong. Make us sing, make us dance, The song inside your soul gives shelter from the storm The song inside your soul gives shelter from the storm Now that sparkle, In your eyes, Like the feeling of a thousand butterflies. Helps you through, wintry nights, The bleakness surrenders and warmth will surely rise. Hear the music,

Y6 Christmas Gold You wake, you yawn, Right then you know it’s Christmas You long to start the day ahead. You run to wake Your sleeping family. They dub their eyes and smile at you: That’s Christmas gold! That’s Christmas gold! Under the tree In brightly coloured wrapping Your gifts are here to be revealed. You watch; you hope That what you chose to give Will please them all, ’cos if it does That’s Christmas gold! That’s Christmas gold! And if you’re lucky you’ll find Christmas gold… But if your world Turned upside down at Christmas, And if no-one was there for you, You’d need someone To come from out of nowhere, Pick you up and help you find That Christmas gold, That Christmas gold. It’s very precious, That Christmas gold. Don’t ever lose it, That Christmas gold.

The girls will also be applying their maths skills to early rationing reasoning culminating in a celebration in the hall eating real life ‘Trench cake’! There will also be a World War exhibition of our work for you to enjoy with your daughter/ward on Friday16th November. Thank you very much for your support this week; our girls have thoroughly enjoyed linking their Project eXplore learning to our WWI commemoration week.

Shoebox Appeal

Exciting News! Three of our Year 6 girls have been chosen to represent Wirral schools in the Merseyside County Primary Schools’ Football Inter Borough League with the possibility of playing at Everton’s football ground. This is an incredible opportunity for the team and for our girls and we wish them the very best of luck! Well done Olivia, Daisy, and Amy!

Girls will receive up to 3 merits for each shoebox filled and brought in to support this charity. A huge well done to our girls who have already donated a filled shoe-box filled with gifts and love. The date for collection has now been extended until Monday 19th November.

A peek at the week ahead…

Firstly, may I say a huge thank you to everybody for supporting our WWI week; the girls’ work for our exhibition was wonderful and I know they thoroughly enjoyed their hard work and seeing the fruits of their labour! We hope you enjoyed it too.

Uniform In order to help parents financially plan for the summer term change in uniform and the September new uniform shop (particularly for our girls moving up to Senior school), a fully comprehensive list of uniform items for sale will be coming soon to our Bugle, with clear prices and a list of essential and recommended items for purchase from our school uniform shop. We are proud of our bespoke uniform, but feel that a transparent and explicit list of uniform items this side of Christmas may help support families in planning/budgeting for this. Christmas Money There are lots of exciting opportunities for our girls to engage in the Christmas festivities over the coming December weeks, but a good number of these opportunities are asking for our pupils to purchase items from school. We appreciate the tight squeeze that Christmas puts many families under, so we have tried to pull together the events which require money below to help you share with your daughter/ward what you are willing to support (and what you are not), or even to highlight how much money you may be spending on them! Perhaps knowing this early will encourage your daughters to think about how they could make some money themselves – or even offer their services around the house to earn their 50 pence for the Gift Fair Lucky Dip! School raffle tickets - £5 per strip Festive Fridays (4 in total; similar to Fruity Friday but with small items for sale) - £1 per item Christmas Gift Afternoon - Lucky dips 50p, Tombola (3 tickets for £1) &gifts priced at £2.50 - £4 Infant Nativity – Donation of your choice at the door Christmas Carol Concert (Y3 to Y6) – Donation of your choice to the church (basket at the door) Christmas Lunch – £2.20 Radio City Cash for Kids Cathedral Choir – tickets £6.50 for standard or £12.50 for VIP PA Christmas Fair – miscellaneous prices

Spelling Shed and Times Table Rockstars This year has seen the trial of the 5-star spelling app called ‘Spelling Shed’. Free for our pupils with their school log-ins, this app is to support our girls’ phonics practise from Years 2 to Years 6. Still in its relative infancy, we apologise for any unforeseen upset this educational tool has had on our younger pupils. The ranked spelling list has been removed for Year 2 and we will continue to monitor its effectiveness and appropriacy for all other pupils. Next week will see the phased introduction of our second app promoting the daily practice of times tables (more information to follow). Thank you for your ongoing support with these initiatives and for your comments and suggestions which help us to review and evaluate effectively. There will be a drop-in session for parents on Mon 26th from 3:30-4:15pm should you wish to pop in with a query about either of these two initiatives. Spring Term Dates Coming soon in our Bugle are next half term’s dates for your diaries including class assemblies, parent workshops, open days and Parents’ Evenings. A mid-year head teacher update is also planned, along with a parent questionnaire which will be used to inform school development priorities. This half term is set to be one jolly, joyful, jam-packed roly-poly of jubilations, but if there is anything that you think that we should know about or consider in our coming plans please do not hesitate to contact school. Thank you for your unswerving support of Junior School.

Anti-Bullying Conference On 7th Nov, our School Council Representatives: Gia So (4B), Ruby Lyons (4EC), Kate Booth (5P) and Daisy Adams (5L), along with Nancy Evans (4EC) attended the Wirral Anti-bullying Conference at Woodchurch High School. The girls collected lots of ideas for promoting respect (the theme of the day) to bring back to school and share with everyone. Eco Warrior: Switch Off Fortnight On Fri, the Eco Warriors will be introducing Switch Off Fortnight for the whole school to get involved in. The fortnight will begin on 26th Nov and is an initiative that aims to help the girls become more aware of their energy consumption and the impact wasting energy has on our environment. The Eco Warriors will be challenging the school to become 'energy slayers' and will be asking them to note all the appliances that they 'slay' (turn off) over the next 2 weeks, at home and in school.

28th November 2018

A peek at the week ahead…

It’s that time of year again where we ask you to locate those donkey costumes and dig out your best tea-towel! Our Reception and Year 1 Nativity practices are well underway, and our tickets will be available for collection from 8:15am tomorrow morning, Thursday 29th November. Every effort has been made to ensure the fair allocation of tickets to all of our families, with two tickets being reserved for each pupil, but it is important to note that due to limited hall seating, Nativity performances may become full so you may be offered the other Nativity performance time. Wednesday 12th Dec at 9:30am and 1:30pm There is no cost for the performance tickets—we all appreciate the financial support you give to our PA and School Council events. The Year 1 and Reception team will share extra information regarding the Nativities very soon. Any problems or queries, please do not hesitate to contact myself or the team via the School Office. Year 2 have enjoyed their ‘Meet the Nativity Characters’ at the Hope Journey, Trinity with Palm Grove Church today and are looking forward to performing their class assemblies in the Spring Term (dates tbc soon). As you may be aware from previous years, our hall capacity is such that our Nativity cannot facilitate all year groups & their parents/carers; we are very much looking forward to their big Year 2 summer production at the end of the year.

The BHSA Bugle: Junior School Headteacher’s Round-Up The end of the autumn term is finally upon us and what an action-packed time it has been. Our new curriculum, including our Project eXplore focus, is ‘off the ground’ with learning links between subject areas and to real-life. Our reflection time, with an emphasis on promoting key values, has been a success, with our girls now using vocabulary about being independent, making kind decisions and respecting each other. We hope you have felt involved in your daughter/ward’s learning journey this term and have seen the outcomes of your support of our incredible PA’s fundraising events.

23rd Jan Next term sees the introduction of our Anti-bullying Charter (online safety) and our Thrive Team, looking at good mental health and wellbeing. It is also our parent workshop month where there will be opportunities to help learn about and support your daughter/ward in our key school improvement areas. And finally, I have attached a flyer of all the uniform items on sale in our school uniform shop to help support parents with budgeting over the next term in preparation for our summer term change in uniform and the September new uniform shop! A huge thank you to the uniform shop team for their creation of this flyer. (Please ensure items of uniform are fully named ready for the Spring term.) Thank you for your continued support and we wish you all a calm, peaceful but very merry Christmas.

Christmas Lunch Should your daughter/ward wish to have a Christmas lunch, please ensure there is at least £2.20 left on ParentPay for meals on Wednesday 19th December. If your daughter/ward usually has a packed lunch and you have added £2.20 onto ParentPay, please ignore the message of ‘minimum £5’ as this can be overridden on this occasion. The Christmas lunch will be the only hot meal option available (plus a vegetarian option); the other choices will either be a turkey or cheese sandwich. Your daughter/ward can of course still bring in their packed lunch.

Half of this amount was sent, before Christmas, to the Crisis organisation and this enabled 10 homeless people to be fed, sheltered and supported medically over the festive period and beyond. The council will now be looking to renew the playground toys with the remaining sum and will be asking their peers for some suggestions. What a great result from some festive fun!

Headteacher’s Round-Up Another week flies by with every minute packed with learning opportunities for our girls. Our school value of kindness has been promoted through the theme of friendship this week, and our girls have been trying hard to show compassion and tolerance at playtimes and lunchtimes and demonstrate the skills of being a good friend. Workshops Thank you to all parents who attended this week’s maths workshops, and for your generous feedback to us; it helps us to tailor our workshops effectively and address any areas where improvement is needed. Snow As the weather is expected to turn a little colder, please ensure that your children are wrapped up warm – blazers, coats, scarves, gloves and hats should all be worn (named please). A black ‘beanie’ hat is also an acceptable extra, and outdoor ‘snow-boots’ can be packed if you have them and the weather is suitable i.e. SNOW Assessment Grades Below is guidance on our in-house assessment system with grade descriptors to help support you in understanding how your daughter/ward is achieving. Please do contact school if you have any queries, concerns or questions you would like answering. Thank you as always for your continued support.

Assessment Grid Grades If your child has been identified as working at Embedding or Embedding+ it means that your daughter/ward is working within the objectives for that year group. If your daughter/ward has been allocated an A&P grade then it means that she is ‘Achieving and Progressing’ at the ‘Expected’ standard for that year group. The ‘Expected’ standard (based on the new National Curriculum 2016) is a broad grading band; it has very wide boundaries allowing significant room for progress within the grade itself i.e. two pupils’ work may look very different from one another even though both pupils have been allocated the ‘Expected’ standard (A&P). Consequently, a number of months’ progress can be demonstrated within this grade. If your daughter has been allocated an Exceeding or Exceeding+ grade it means that they are working beyond the ‘Expected’ standard and are demonstrating a Greater Depth of ‘skills, matters, processes and knowledge.’ (NC 2016)

Colours The colour allocated to the grades indicates how ‘on-track’ they are in reaching the ‘Expected’ standard (A&P) for their year group – with green representing your daughter/ward being at the point expected of them on their learning journey. Yellow indicates that they are slightly off-track, and no colour indicates that they are becoming markedly off-track or not working within the expected year group standard (and will consequently need a little more ‘support and intervention’). A purple colour indicates that your daughter/ward is working beyond the expected standard and demonstrating a Greater Depth of ‘skills, matters, processes and knowledge’ for their year group.

Expectations Children do not always work at the same pace or grasp concepts at the same time as their peers; our assessment system is a continuum building on skills and knowledge from previous year groups. We expect all pupils to meet the minimum ‘Expected’ standard for the year group that they are in by the end of the academic year. Our curriculum is based on exploring and applying real-life ‘core subject’* skills, matters, processes and knowledge at the Greater Depth standard so that all pupils are challenged and extended and pushed on to meet their highest academic potential. *Core subjects at BHSA are: English, Maths, Science and Computing

Spelling and Handwriting Your daughter/ward’s spelling and handwriting are assessed slightly differently, as the objectives which outline the ‘Expected’ standard are discrete i.e. clearly defined and can be assessed with a 1 or a 0. If your daughter/ward is allocated a 1 for their handwriting and/or spelling, this means that they have met all of the objectives which outline the ‘Expected’ standard for that year group. If your daughter/ward is allocated a 0 for their handwriting and/or spelling, this means that they have not yet met all of the objectives outlining the ‘Expected’ standard for that year group – but they are working towards a 1. *Please note that your daughter/ward may not maintain her grade of a 1 in her spelling and/or handwriting year on year, as she is assessed against a different set of criteria for her new year group.

Headteacher’s Round-Up Another week of linked learning and showing kindness and independence! I hope you are starting to see your girls improving in their skills, presentational standards and in their ability to be a little more independent; please remember that our door to discuss progress is always open if you need to explore your daughter/ward’s learning journey a little more with us. Parents’ evenings are on Tuesday 19th and Thursday 21st March which is a little way off if you have any queries or concerns you’d like to speak to the class teacher about. Year 5 Manor Adventure Thank you to our parents who have completed their payments for Manor Adventure so far. Just a reminder that the next instalment of £100 is due on 31st January. A note to all of ourYear 4 parents that this is a once-in-a lifetime adventure holiday that your children will be invited to attend next academic year which costs about £410 – knowing early may help with the managing of the budget for this. More information will be given to you in the summer term when Miss Capes leads a Manor Adventure meeting. Year 6 parents: Heights and Weights On Monday we had the nursing team in to measure ourYear 6 girls as part of a government directive to assess 10 and 11 year olds’ heights and weights. If it is the same as in previous years’, some families may receive a letter in the post promoting the Change4Life campaign to address ‘child obesity’ and with a summary of your daughter/ward’s height and weight. I implore you to keep this letter out of the way of yourYear 6 young adults as the information is for parents’ eyes only.As a mentally healthy school promoting good body image, it is important to work with your children on healthy eating and exercise in a way which is child-friendly and not alarming in any way. Spanish Club It is with great sadness that I share that Mrs Fajardo, our Spanish Club teacher, recently suffered a very close bereavement. Her Spanish club has consequently not taken place this year but will resume next week from 30th January. Mrs Collinson has Spring flyers from Mrs Fajardo for the girls who take part in Spanish club – or who would like to – in the school office. Please ask your daughter/ward to collect one if they attend Spanish club, or you would like your daughter/ward to be involved in this. ColdWeather There are still lots of younger girls with no coats on in this terribly cold weather. Please ensure that you provide your daughter/ward with one of our fleece-lined school coats, school scarf and black hat. Older girls are encouraged to wear their blazers and school coats, scarves and hats. Snow boots are permitted in snow/frosty weather but school shoes for inside school is required. Thank you for your continued correspondence, and for your ongoing support of the school.

A huge thank you to our wonderful girls for being SO sensible in our slippy weather... No snowballs have been thrown… No igloos have been started… … no smiles either! Please could I ask that all girls come in a warm coat tomorrow with gloves and hats and that snow/ice boots/shoes are worn. If you could pop school shoes into your daughter/ward’s school bag too please to protect our inside environment. Sandy Way carpark will be closed if snowy or icy in the morning again. If at the end of the school day Sandy way has cones out, please do not move them please; this means that driving down there is unsafe for our girls.

The BHSA Bugle: Junior School Headteacher’s Round-Up BHSA Junior school staff would like to thank each and every parent and carer for their support throughout the snowy snap last week. You helped our girls to demonstrate resilience and determination, and witness tolerance and patience as our school team endeavoured to clear paths, assess areas and change plans last minute to keep our girls safe. I also need to thank our mum and dad helpers (and carers and grandparents!) who went above and beyond in helping our school community with road gritting, car pushing and area patrolling alongside our academy staff! We are all very grateful – thank you!

Junior Digital Leaders Our Digital Leaders have been working very hard with Mrs Bailey to produce assemblies for Safer Internet Day today. The girls presented their PowerPoints and spoke to both Rec, KS1 & KS2 girls, informing them and raising their awareness of online safety. Their main message to all pupils was: ‘Digital Leaders are here to help educate, lead and keep you safe online; to teach you how to use the internet safely and kindly and make sure you make good decisions whilst you are online.’ Well done Digital Leaders!

Thank You! A big THANK YOU to the kind people who donated the Little Tykes cars to our Nursery. We now have a fleet of 5 cars which the girls are enjoying driving!

Class Corner

Hear from Year 2 A Peek at our Week! Both classes have thoroughly enjoyed performing their assemblies.

Project eXplore update We have been learning about Australia and locating different landmarks such as Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. We have been exploring the deep ocean and the moon in our literacy lessons, where we have written very in te re st ing p ost ca rds and jo b advertisements for Bob, man on the moon and Dougal, the Deep Sea Diver. Over the next few weeks, we will be learning about Aboriginal art and researching facts about native Australian animals. We will also be learning about how Captain Cook ventured across Oceans to discover Australia.

Class 2M demonstrated the value of courage.

Class 2T based their assembly on the value of responsibility.

Our favourite read... 2T are currently reading: ‘James and the Giant Peach’ by Roald Dahl. “I can’t wait to find out what happens next.”

We have thoroughly enjoyed reading these texts in our literacy lessons.

Did You Know?

“Imaginative!”

Captain was born in 1728 near Middlesbrough and first worked in a grocery store.

By special request, 2M are currently reading ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ by JK Rowling

He was an officer of the British Royal Navy, as well as a navigator and explorer. He is famous for discovering Australia.

“This is magical!” “I would give it two thumbs up.” Home Support We have been working hard to improve our addition and subtraction skills. Each morning , we complete a range of different calculations to practice bridging through ten or adding two digit with a two digit number as well as solving problems. We have just begun to learn multiplication skills; it would be amazing if you could help your daughter/ward to learn their 2, 3, 5 and 10 times table by heart.

‘Dechox’ in support of British Heart Foundation Ellie was born with a chronic heart condition, Complete AVSD. At 9 months old, she had open-heart surgery in an attempt to repair the holes in her heart and save her life. The operation went well but she still had a moderate leak on the left side of her heart. In December 2018, she began medication to prolong the need for further surgeries. Ellie has decided she wants to start fundraising for the British Heart Foundation after the death of her Great-Nan in December, who also suffered from a heart condition. To kick-start her fundraising she is giving up chocolate for the whole of February for the British Heart Foundation’s annual ‘Dechox’. For more information on Ellie’s story, and to donate, please visit her just giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/dechox2019-ellie-maygoeschocfree Any donations would be greatly appreciated. THREADWORM –INFORMATION FOR PARENTS This infection is not serious but medical guidance should be sought if you suspect that your child is suffering from them. Threadworm: Threadworm are common worm infections of the intestines (or gut) that often do not show symptoms. They are particularly common in children between the ages of five and twelve years. Infection often occurs in more than one family member. Threadworms look like thin, white cotton threads. Signs and symptoms In infections where there are symptoms, itching around the anus occurs, especially after a warm bath or at night causing sleep disturbance. Sometimes the worms can be seen either in the stools or around the anus. Mode of Transmission Transmission is by direct transfer of infective eggs by hand from anus to mouth of the same or another person, or indirectly through clothing, bedding or food. Re-infection is common. The eggs are ingested and hatch in the small intestine. The worms then migrate to the large bowel. Treatment There are a variety of treatments available; advice should be sought from your GP. Treatment should be repeated after two weeks. It is also advisable to treat the whole family/ household members at the same time in order to adequately eradicate the problem from the household.

Prevention of spread • Encourage hand washing especially after going to the toilet and before eating • Keep fingernails short and discourage nail biting • Wear clean underwear at night

Children with threadworm do not need to be kept away from school as long as the child is treated and is aware of the hygiene measures required.

Our girls break up for half term at their normal time on Thursday 14 February and return to us on Monday 25th February, ready for a short 5week term which will see a Scholastic Book Fair, our ‘Writing with Imagination’ workshop and Head’s update, Year 6 road safety talks, Year 3 Philharmonic trip, Year 4 Viking trip, Year 5 Birkenhead Priory trip, World Book Day (J.K.Rowling themed), SATs workshops, Music Festivals, Science Roadshow, and of course our parents’ evenings on 19 th and 21st March. Attendance In March 2016 the Department for Education (DfE) published a report on the link between absence and attainment in Key Stage 2. It was found that pupils with no absence are 1.3 times more likely to achieve the ‘expected’ standard in reading, writing and maths by the end of Key Stage 2 (primary school), and 3.1 times more likely to achieve the higher greater depth standard, than pupils that have missed 10-15 per cent of all sessions. There are a number of girls in our school whose attendance has fallen significantly over recent months and school will be sending letters out to parents/carers to alert them to their daughter/ward’s attendance. Please do contact school if you would like any more information about your child’s attendance or want to discuss addressing your child’s continued absences.

Holidays BHSA Junior school children have 16 weeks’ worth of holidays across the academic year. A number of term-time holiday requests are made each week by parents for authorisation for school time holidays. At BHSA we follow the Department for Education legislation and Wirral LA guidelines which means that school leaders do not allow for any holiday absences during term time. Evidence of a one-off family wedding may be authorised by Mrs Mahony and the governors for a maximum of 3 days, but all other days will be recorded as unauthorised. This may result in a Fixed Penalty Notice for absence. Writing with Imagination workshops Your daughter/ward has received a paper copy of a letter outlining the times of our two workshops on Writing with Imagination on Wednesday 27th February (also attached electronically). If you are interested in attending this workshop, please return the slip attached by the first day after the half term. This is very important to ensure that we adhere to health and safety regulations on capacity, and to tailor our workshop effectively. The aims of this workshop are: - to discuss expected standards of writing - to provide examples of opportunities to engage imagination - to promote a love of talking and writing - to develop writing Everybody at BHSA wishes you a wonderful break from school next week. Thank you for your continued support of school and the school team.

Class Corner

Hear from Year 4 A Peek at our Week! Both classes have thoroughly enjoyed performing their assemblies.

Project eXplore update We have been exploring a range of journeys people have to take throughout their lives. We have been learning about a refugee’s difficult journey to find a new, safe home. The children have been plotting routes on maps; discovering the artist: Nizar Ali Badr and writing their own version of the journey. We have been studying lots of other journeys such as: an Anglo Saxon’s journey to Britain, Lila’s journey in ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ and the journey a plastic bottle takes when it has been used. “Project eXplore is fun because it is a mixture of all the subjects” “I love everything being based around one topic, studying it in more detail and it all being in one book”

Class 4B based their assembly on positivity, determination and collaboration.

Class 4EC showed how we are all unique.

Our favourite read... Year 4 are currently reading: ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ by Philip Pullman. “It’s an interesting journey” “The adventure is very exciting and dangerous” “Lila is inspiring as she takes lots of risks”

“It is a pleasure to read”

Coming up this half term… Year 4 will be visiting Tatton Park to learn about Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. More information to come.

Home Support Please continue to take advantage of the wonderful online platforms to help assist in the girls’ hub job homeworks. We would like to see at least 10 games on Spelling Shed and Times Tables Rockstars played every week. An accelerated reader quiz should be taken after every book is read. Who will be next to read one million words?

Did You Know? Plastic pollution can now be found on every beach in the world, from busy tourist beaches to uninhabited, tropical islands - nowhere is safe. Scientists have recently discovered microplastics embedded deep in the Arctic ice. Every day, approximately 8 million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans.

ONLINE SAFETY CONCERNS

‘Tik Tok’ app What is the Tik Tok app (and why is it dangerous)?      

The Tik Tok app is a music video social media platform that has replaced the Musical.ly app. Existing Musical.ly users, content, and followers have been moved to the new TikTok app upon updating. Developed in China, the TikTok app combines lip-syncing, built-in video effects, and social media. Users can watch clips of others or create clips, edit them, and add special effects. The most popular videos feature lip-syncing or dancing. Users need to be 13 years old to have an account.

What was the Musical.ly app?   

Musical.ly was a popular app with children that lets users make lip-syncing videos to their favourite songs. Sometimes there could be mature language and sexual content in the songs that are popular on the app, and there was no way to filter the content. The app had messaging features that can open children up to inappropriate conversations with strangers.

Why are we concerned? Tik Tok is rapidly becoming the most downloaded app.

      

All content is immediately accessible with no filters. A lot of the content is inappropriate for children to view. There are only two privacy settings on the app: Private: only the creator can watch their videos. Public: anyone on the app can see their videos. By default, all accounts are public unless the privacy settings are changed. In our experience, apps like Tik Tok and Musical.ly can allow strangers to direct message children. MOMO online ‘game’ Some of our students in both juniors and seniors have spoken to staff about a new 'game' online called the MOMO Challenge. It is frightening them and encouraging them to complete challenges, including it has been reported, to kill themselves. We believe it also appears on YouTube clips and on some social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Instagram. The link below has more information for you from the BBC, reporting from Irish police: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-47359623 We wanted to alert you to this latest concern and should you want any further information on keeping your daughter/ward safe online, the NSPCC and Net Aware both have plenty of information for you.

Year 5 Trip The Year 5s experienced the full ‘Gerry and the Pacemaker’s’ experience last week, singing in fine voice, as they sailed along the Mersey as part of their Project eXplore learning for this term. They carried out geographical surveys both on the ferry and as they walked along the river bank to their final destination – Birkenhead Priory. This stunning building is the oldest in Merseyside and was the site of the original ferry service started by the monks.

Thanks to all the girls and parent helpers for making this a great day out with connections to our curriculum galore!
