NCAA History Notre Dame has qualified for postseason competition 34 times and won the NCAA title in 1944, in addition to a runner-up showing in 1937, third-place finishes in 1931, ’33, ’36 and ’51 and 19 finishes in the top 10. In 1989, the NCAA introduced a regional format (27 teams at three sites), with the top 10 teams advancing to the 30-team NCAA Championship final.
