Professional qualifications & progression to higher education PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

PROGRESSION TO HIGHER EDUCATION

BFEI graduates gain professional qualifications certified and accredited by a range of nationally and internationally recognised examining and professional bodies including: • Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI) - www.accountingtechniciansireland.ie • Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC)/Education Excellence (EDEXCEL) www.edexcel.com • Cisco Networking Academy (CISCO) - www.cisco.com • Comite International D’Esthétique et de Cosmetologie (CIDESCO) - www.cidesco.com • CompTIA Certification - www.comptia.org • Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) - www.qqi.ie (QQI Awards were formerly made by FETAC) • International Therapy Examination Council (ITEC) - www.itecworld.co.uk • Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) - www.ipu.ie

BFEI courses offer progression options either within the Institute or in partnership with the Institutes of Technology and Universities. All education and training qualifications are included in the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) which is a system of ten levels used to describe the Irish qualification system. Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) which makes awards has responsibility for the Irish NFQ.

NATIONAL FRAMEWORK OF QUALIFICATIONS Successful completion of a Major QQI Award at Level 5 or Level 6 at BFEI will mean that you can apply through the CAO system for entry into participating courses in the QQI Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS). QQI will calculate the best score for you based on your QQI results (maximum score is 400 points) and will forward those results directly to the CAO in July. Further details on HELS are available at https://qhelp.qqi.ie/learners/higher-eduction-linksscheme. You should note that for entry to some courses, higher education institutions may specify requirements that applicants must satisfy such as the achievement of a particular component or specific grades or achieving all credits in one sitting. You should check both the individual higher institutions and the CAO website for further information. Check out the details on progression options on each course page. Graduates from some courses who successfully complete their studies at BFEI may apply for advanced entry to year 2 or year 3 of an appropriate degree course. If you are a mature student (over the age of 23), then you should note that some higher education institutions reserve a number of places on degree courses for mature students. You will have to apply to each institution individually.

Rag Day raises €2,515 for Cancer Charities! BFEI’s Students Union work to represent the voice of students and to develop social and sporting activities in the Institute. Participation is actively encouraged as these activities provide opportunities for personal development, teamwork and leadership. Activities vary from year to year from nights out, football and pool competitions to the annual end of year ball.

Rag Day One of the many highlights for 2015/2016 was Rag Day on 24 November 2015. It was a fun filled day that included a bake sale, pool competition, Men’s Waxing, Blind Date, and an opportunity for students to throw pies at BFEI staff! It was all in a good cause with a staggering €2,515 raised by the event in aid of the Irish Cancer Society and the Marie Keating Foundation. Thanks to all the organisers, and to the local businesses in Blackrock who supported the event with raffle prizes.

Rag Day

Games Society Students from the Games Design and Development Course lead the way in this society. It provides a forum where students from all courses in the Institute can have fun playing a range of networked multi-player games. Using the Oculus Rift, a head mounted virtual reality device which gives the perception of actually being inside the game, is popular with the students. They were all eager participants in the Games Competition held on Rag Day.

Zombie Horror Show There was a chill in the air at Halloween when the BFEI corridors were stalked by Zombies…The talents of the Theatrical Media Make-Up students were showcased in a Zombie Hallowen Horror Show when a range of looks were on display and all in aid of charity!

It’s Speakers In and Trips Out! Staff at BFEI endeavour to broaden and enrich the learning experience for their students and opportunities are taken to invite Guest Speakers into the Institute and to take students out on relevant field trips. A flavour of the activities for 2015/2016 is captured here.

Landscape Design students learning about nursery operations from Martin Tully, on a trip to Tully Nurseries.

Former Governor of Mountjoy Prison, John Longeran, enthralling the Applied Psychology students with his talk on Criminology and the Justice System.

Student Life at BFEI Renowned Garden Designer and TV personality, Diarmuid Gavin, gave an engaging and animated talk on the history and development of design styles to a packed audience of students from various disciplines within the Design Department.

A Bronze for Urban Oasis Students from the Pre-Paramedic Fire & Ambulance course on a trip to the Emergency Services Training Institute. As part of their trip, an Officer from Dublin Fire Brigade was on hand to offer advice on applying for posts in this area. Students also heard first-hand accounts of what it is like to work in the field from former graduates now employed in the Dublin Airport Fire Service and with the Guinness Fire Service.

BFEI Landscape Architecture and Design students continued the well-established tradition of winning awards at the Bloom in the Park Festival in June 2015 when Urban Oasis created by Nathalie Markiefka was awarded a bronze medal. Urban Oasis tells the story of Glen and Thomas, a modern professional couple, living in a busy city centre. They spend their day working in front of the computer and in the evenings and weekends they are longing to spend some quality time together in their own private green haven. Their balcony has become a lush green oasis in a concrete jungle where they can unplug from their busy lifestyle, replenish their batteries, and connect with nature and each other.Â

How do I apply?

“I decided to attend BFEI for a one year full-time course in Auctioneering, Estate Agency and Valuation as a precursor to a part-time Level 6 course in IT Tallaght. As a mature student this proved invaluable as the tuition and guidance I received in BFEI enabled me to tackle the higher level course with confidence and enthusiasm.

The Continuous Assessments (CAs) in BFEI, in particular, were of a similar high standard to the ones I have encountered in ITT, giving me, I believe, an advantage over other students in the time management of these projects. The decision to attend a one year full-time course was not one that I took lightly, but one that has proven extremely beneficial. I would recommend it to anyone, young or old, who is contemplating a career in a property related industry.”

“I found learning Digital Marketing, Social Media Platforms and other new technologies fascinating.

Now I am able to explain what is going on behind the scene in different search engines, and how Google, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Google+ …etc work. I learned how to design a website by using HTML, CSS, Java Script and CMS. Added to that, I learned how to optimise websites to improve search engine results to attract customers. The idea of collaborating business with new technology opened my eyes to another world I have never thought about. The lecturers at BFEI are supportive, helpful, and gave me the confidence to decide my future career.”

“I looked at this course as a stepping stone back into education, as I’d been working in retail, it was an easy choice. The transition from employee to student however was a huge change but made easier by the great tutors here at BFEI. Through doing this course I developed analytical skills that can be applied to any part of life and an unquenchable thirst for more... more education, more experience in life, and in work. It was all that I had gained personally, as well as professionally from this course that has encouraged me to pursue further education to become a qualified professional. I am now studying accountancy which is something I had not considered previously, down to our fantastic entrepreneurship lecturer. To anyone who wants to get into a managerial role in retail this course is great as it sheds new light on all too familiar situations. It allows you to see how a business could be managed and where its potential lies. For anyone looking to move back into education and onto something else it is a great place to get good grounding on how to approach assignments and exams in a warm and friendly atmosphere.”

“Having graduated with an Hons Degree in Graphic Design, I worked as an art director within the Irish advertising industry, including several years as creative director with Saatchi & Saatchi Dublin. My design, Patterns of Change, was chosen as the winning entry and formed the centre piece of Bloom 2011. The course provided me with a really strong foundation that allowed me to navigate a successful career path in landscape architecture. I now work for renowned designer, Diarmuid Gavin.”

Since graduating with a distinction, I have returned to BFEI this year, and am enrolled in the Community Services Management course with a view to working in elderly care upon completion. I am really enjoying the experience of college life at BFEI. There is a great atmosphere around the place and I find the staff and teachers very approachable and engaging.”

“Doing the Retail Pharmacy Course helped me to change my career path in a way I could never imagined. I had a keen interest in beauty and retail and saw this course as the perfect fit. In only one year I gained great knowledge of OTC medicine, skin care, make up and work experience. The success that I have got is down to the great teachers who are patient, friendly and easy to approach. Being a foreign student I found all the staff welcoming and extremely helpful especially at the start, as going to college in a different country was my biggest worry but they made it a pleasure. Thanks to BFEI, I have now secured a job in a Pharmacy. I would recommend BFEI to everybody who is looking to change their career path or improve their skills.”

“I graduated from the Beauty and Body Therapy course in BFEI in May 2015. In the two years I was a student there, I not only learned the skills to work in the world of beauty but I also made lifelong friends. BFEI and particularly the Beauty and Body Therapy course allowed me to discover a new found confidence and grow as a student and an individual. This was mainly due to the excellent teaching and continuous encouragement from the teaching staff. I qualified in various areas including Facials, Body Massage, Waxing, Electrolysis, Laser treatments, Make-Up and Indian Head. I am qualified in both CIDESCO and ITEC. These qualifications have given me an opportunity to work in a Beauty Salon, while the knowledge I gained in skin and body care has allowed me to work in a Pharmacy as a Cosmetic Consultant.”

“As a mature student, returning to study was a daunting prospect. After looking into many courses, the Office Informatics Course in Blackrock appealed to me the most. There is a diverse range of subjects using modern office software and also additional non-computer based subjects. Some of the applications I was familiar with, but as software has developed a lot, there were a lot of additional features that were new. The tutors are very encouraging and helpful. I have found the course enjoyable and beneficial and I hope to gain employment at the end of the course."
