The Bridge - October 2019

The Bridge October 2019

October in the Forest Autumn sees the culmination of all the work we have put into the apple trees in our orchards over the years. The planting and formative pruning of the new trees, protection from large herbivores (sheep, cattle and deer), subsequent pruning, not to mention watering in times of drought and helpful feeding with potash from the wood stove amount to a good many ‘person hours’. What is it all for? The obvious answer is a crop of lovely apples to eat, cook and eat, make into juice and attempt to make into cider. Despite all our efforts, however, the outcome is a very chancy business. This year is a case in point – there was a very mild winter which allowed many pest species to survive in large numbers, then the spring Cox’s Pomona blossom was hit by late frosts. Some of our trees just look horrible, with diseased and sparse foliage and small, blighted fruit. The Scotch Bridgets, which have served us so well for years, have hardly any apples on them. Others look fine, having escaped both frosts and pests, while some are so laden that their branches are bending down to the ground and in some cases have torn off. We have been harvesting apples for several weeks now. The earliest ‘eaters’: the Bardseys, Red Falstaff and little Pitmaston Pineapples have virtually all gone and the remaining big Captain Toms, which can be eaten raw or cooked to make a lovely apple puree, are beginning to go soft. Buckets-full of windfalls have gone to the cattle at St George’s Farm where they were greeted with great enthusiasm. Now the later varieties: the Worcester Pearmains, Bramleys, Ribston Pippins, Orleans Reinettes and Herefordshire Russets are being gathered. Crates of fruit are going to Blackstone Farm to be juiced, pasteurised and bottled for us in a blend governed by chance! Most people seem to enjoy participating in some smaller-scale juicing on the farm. There’s plenty of action and opportunities to help with loading the ‘scratter’, which minces the fruit into a sloppy pulp, shovelling the pulp or ‘pomace’ into the cloths to make the ‘cheeses’, and turning the screw on the press to extract the juice. The process even has its own vocabulary! Even sceptical, fruit-shy children are surprised and delighted by the delicious results. It’s not only people who enjoy the fruits of the season. Flies, wasps and hornets are feeding on apples still on the trees and well as bruised or squashy windfalls. Butterflies are also attracted to the sugary fruits: in fact I was picking plums last month with friends amongst a flurry of Red Admirals. With about 150 fruit trees at Uncllys there’s plenty for everyone! Linda Iles

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk

Welcome to October’s edition of The Bridge. Despite the remains of the summer’s sunshine being with us as The Bridge goes to the printers, the hints of chill in the air remind us that autumn is here. This month’s magazine is full of events for the season. Linda Iles shares her enjoyment of the fruits of the season and explains why this year has presented some challenges. Read what has been happening in the orchards at Uncllys on the facing page. Bewdley Horticultural Society Annual Show has been a feature of the town’s calendar for many years and Stuart William’s pictures in the centre colour pages give a flavour of the beautiful produce on display again this year. Once again, Bewdley Museum has a full programme of seasonal activities during the school holidays at the end of the month, as well as a special Hallowe’en event for those brave enough to take the chance. Turn to page 11 for details. The beginning of autumn also means that thoughts are turning toward Christmas. Cards for Good Causes opens its pop up shop in St. George’s Hall this month - details on page 25 while on the centre colour pages Elaine Barbour explains why Fairtrade is as important today as it was when she became a Traidcraft Trader 31 years ago. She looks forward to Bewdley’s Traidcraft Fair early in November with its Christmas gifts and goodies. I was surprised to discover that nearly a third of our town’s population is over 65 years of age. Both Bewdley Medical Centre and Bewdley’s Mayor are hosting events this month designed to meet some of the needs this age group may have. Turn to page 43 to find out about these community engagement and information and events. Jonathan Halsall considers the role of libraries in a digital age on page 23 and explains why small can often be beautiful, and why libraries can have a big impact on people’s lives, whatever their age. Elsewhere in the magazine we bring you news of films, concerts, quizzes, fundraising events and talks on a wide range of subjects to entertain you as the nights draw in. Gill

Church News l ST ANNE’S HOSTS A FLOWER FESTIVAL CELEBRATION AND CONCERT: 4th - 7th OCTOBER Bewdley Floral Art is celebrating its Emerald Anniversary by holding a Festival of Flowers in St Anne’s church in the middle of Load Street from Friday 4th – Monday 7th October. The last festival in the church celebrated a Golden Heritage of the Bewdley area, with the memorable flock of white doves swooping down over the chancel. This year’s festival entitled ‘Our Garden So Green’ takes its theme from the current trend of back to nature and enjoyment of the natural world. The outside garden is brought into the church where you will be able to sit at a natural table and ‘sleep’ on a bed made from moss and flowers. A highlight of the weekend is a Saturday evening concert with the Kidderminster Valentine’s Choir. Sit and enjoy the wonderful floral designs to some delightful music.

Expose natures lines through printing using apples, oak blocks and leaves to create a printed orchard tree. Sunday 27th October 10am – 3pm Adults £5 Children free Hedge-laying Course: A two-day course at Tickenhill meadows. The purpose of the course is to explore the ancient skill of hedgelaying, traditionally used to provide a boundary and shelter for livestock. As well as the practical benefits for livestock, hedgelaying creates vital corridors and habitat for wildlife, and helps rejuvenate a hedge from the base allowing it to re-grow and start its life cycle again. The course will be taught by local expert Wade Muggleton and will involve laying a planted hedge at Tickenhill meadow, along with plenty of talk and demonstration on the history, ecology and tools of the trade. Course cost: £60. Saturday 30th November – Sunday 1st December 9.00am – 4.30pm Tree Planting: Over the coming winter months, we will be working to plant 1,800 native trees in an area of woodland we are restoring to a coppice management system on behalf of John Ruskin’s Guild of St George. We will be planting a range of woody species, predominantly hazel with a mix of flowering and berry-bearing trees, that in time will offer a valuable food source for the forest’s wildlife. We are looking for community groups that are interested in taking part and helping us plant these trees. To express an interest in tree planting or to book courses call: 01299 488083 or email: events@wyreclt.org.uk or book online at www.wyreclt.org.uk 17

Repair Café - why we need your information Saturday 19th October 10.00 am – 2.00 pm St George’s Hall, Load Street, Bewdley Visitors to the Repair Café will see our volunteer Repairers beavering away testing, dismantling, soldering, glueing, sewing, reassembling and sharpening. Perhaps more importantly they will see them chatting to the customers, finding out how items may have ceased to function and explaining what they are doing to repair the item. They may also be explaining why items may not be repairable or how to avoid them becoming damaged in the future. Ideally they will also show the customer how they can carry out their own repairs and encouraging them to do so. Sometimes the customer will then attempt the repair under the supervision of an expert repairer. This advice and support is as important as the physical repair and is much appreciated by our customers. Of course the first volunteers that the customers will be greeted by are front of house staff who will give them a registration form. Some people find filling in this form a little tiresome and wonder why we need the information. There are many reasons. Each month one of our volunteers, Janice Bell, analyses the number and type of repair and our success rate to ensure that we are keeping up our standards. We do ask for an email address and contact number, not just so we can send a reminder about the next Repair Café (which many customers tell us they appreciate). Occasionally we do need to contact an individual customer about their repair. This may be because we subsequently discover that there may be a hazard. This has never happened at the Bewdley Repair Café but we need to be able to do so should this arise. We have had a number of instances when we have subsequently discovered a way in which an item can be repaired or been able to track down a necessary spare part. Of course, any contact information is kept confidential and not passed on to anyone else. Customer feedback and comments are greatly appreciated and help us to access the support and funding needed to support our work. We also contribute our statistics to surveys of Repair Cafes across the world. Recent research by the Repair Café Foundation has identified that certain appliances are more likely to break down and some brands are harder to repair than others. In order to contribute to this knowledge we are hoping, when appropriate, to record the brand of items, particularly electrical and electronic appliances. We hope that our customers will support us with this effort to influence manufacturers and ensure that more household items last longer and are repairable. Bewdley Library Autumn has not brought with it news of the library's future predicament as previously thought. The 5-10 year Strategy Plan will now be submitted in October or November ready for the Worcestershire County Council’s December Cabinet. I'm not sure how the various library statistics affect the proposed outcomes but Bewdley is still doing well on visitor and issue numbers. The visits total for the first five months of this financial year was its highest April-to-August total for four years. Pondering why we have largely managed to maintain our figures in a time of severe financial constraints, I would suggest that what has limited us has also lead us to focus on a correct strategy. Being a tiny library with no extra room, we have been forced to focus on our original purpose. We have not tried to become all things to all people as some others in the country have, thus losing their identity and unique value as a library. We have concentrated on getting as many books as we can source from other libraries, without damaging their stock, and by incorporating them in various displays, we've managed to overcome the limitations of our size. With the rise of the internet, many thought that libraries would soon become obsolete. Two decades later, government cuts withstanding, libraries are still with us largely because the predicted demise of the physical book not only didn't materialise but, in many cases, has surpassed sales and issue levels from before the digital age. Almost as important, the libraries' traditional role as a safe educational space and a place of solace for those in need of it remains as important as ever. In fact, perhaps even more important as other public services have been reduced the library has often had to fill the gap. It remains one of the few places people of all ages and status can access free of charge, as the popular author Matt Haig said "Libraries aren't just about books. They are almost the only public space we have left which don't like our wallets more than us.” Jonathan Halsall

American Epic Weekend 4th - 5th October Bewdley Festival presents a weekend of themed events centred around the award-winning, star-studded music documentary series American Epic. The weekend will see Bewdley transformed into Main Street USA, featuring film screenings, Q&A sessions, live music, street artists and much more. This special event celebrates the landmark music documentary series ‘American Epic’ from British filmmakers Bernard MacMahon and Allison McGourty and narrated by Robert Redford. The weekend includes a screening of the award-winning trilogy of documentary films about the first recordings of rural music in the U.S.A. and their cultural, social and technological impact on the world. On Saturday, October 5th in the true spirit of American Epic, Bewdley will become Main Street USA, ringing to the sounds of the Bewdley Marching band as it leads a parade of American Classic cars. There will be a feature children’s film at 10.30 in St George’s Hall, street performers, the American Soup Trail, Ukelele Bands, Bewdley Concert Band, and local musicians performing American music whilst American themed food is being served by the local pubs and cafes. Organisers hope local shops will join in the theme and be decorated with Festival and American bunting. The curated weekend, taking place in St George’s Hall, will present audiences with a line-up of events including Q&A sessions with the film’s producer Allison McGourty, hosted by a celebrity guest interviewer, lectures on sound recording from world renowned music producers, including three times Grammy winner Andrew Scheps, and an exhibition of rare photographs of the ground breaking musicians and equipment. Leading Nashville-based singer songwriter Rod Picott will close the celebrations when he plays live at the popular ‘Music in the Hall’ session on Saturday, 5th October. Tickets can be purchased from: https://www.bewdleyfestival.org.uk/festival-2019/american-epic-weekend

Bewdley Horticultural S Despite the changing forecasts we were granted a beautiful day for our annual show. There had been a lot of hard work behind the scenes for organisers, growers and crafters but the results were spectacular and everyone who entered deserves a medal. While some of our judges live locally, many travel long distances to attend on the day and all are very experienced in their field and give us many helpful tips to improve our entries for future years. Although writing these pearls of wisdom onto our entry cards adds to the judging time, we are very grateful to have their input. We had 395 entries which is up on last year and the quality of the entries improves year on year. The children’s sections were particularly well supported to the delight of us all and bodes well for the future of our society. Our craft enthusiasts entered beautifully made items for their classes. We are very proud of the friendliness of all our members who range in age from 10 to 80+ years and are happy to share their knowledge. Even the most inexperienced has something to offer and the specialists who come to our monthly meetings add enormously to our knowledge base and often bring along plants we can purchase. The Society continues to grow and we always welcome visitors and new members to our meeting on the third Monday of the month in Riverside Church. Look out for details in The Bridge. Society Annual Show 2019

Traidcraft Christmas Fair 2nd November Traidcraft is celebrating 40 Years of Fairtrade and we’re celebrating too with the Traidcraft Christmas Fair on 2nd November from 10am to 4pm in St Anne’s Church. There’ll be a wide range of Christmas goodies – cards, wrap, decorations, food – as well as our usual range of food and beverages, everyday cards and crafts. So please join us for this annual event. Refreshments will be served all day. Here in Bewdley we’ve been involved in selling Traidcraft and promoting Fair Trade since the earliest days. Sales were small to begin with, but things took off in the early 1990s with the re-ordering of St Anne’s Church and a permanent Traidcraft stall in the coffee area. Other local churches and schools have used us as a resource for their own stalls and events. Bewdley’s Elaine Barbour has been selling Traidcraft in and from St Anne’s for 31 years, amassing total sales in that time of over two thirds of a million pounds. We can be proud of our work in helping to get Fair Trade better known and supported in the local area and beyond. This year has been a time of change at Traidcraft, but we’re still here and with your help can continue to pioneer the future of Fair Trade. We are all slowly waking up to the fact that our lifestyles are having a profound effect on the planet that sustains us. The choices we make and the things we consume have consequences. The entire Traidcraft range has been carefully chosen: always fair, but also sustainable and organic wherever possible. We’ve been supporting and sustaining farmers and artisans during the last forty years and many of them have long understood that their long term future lies in finding ways to produce and farm so that their land and their families remain healthy and strong. Just one example is ATC in the Philippines who provides Traidcraft with organic and unrefined brown sugar, used in our Muscovado chocolate. For years we’ve supported them in a tree planting programme to help strengthen their soil, improve rain water capture and encourage more bio-diversity – all excellent for the environment. All our own brand chocolate has entirely compostable packaging – the first company in the UK to do that. Choosing to buy Fair Trade, futureproof ethical food and drink is every day activism, and is the simplest way to change the world. For more information about Traidcraft in Bewdley please contact: Elaine Barbour 400617 barboursbewdley@btopenworld.com

Dementia Friends Information Session Tuesday 1st October 11.30am Community Café, Bewdley Medical Centre, Dog Lane, Bewdley Bewdley Medical Centre has joined a local volunteer to tackle the stigma and lack of understanding around dementia. Nick Hoyle is running a free ‘Dementia Friends’ Information session on Tuesday 1st October at Bewdley Medical Centre and is looking for local people to come along. Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help. From telling friends about the Dementia Friends programme, to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts. The one hour session will take place at the Community Cafe, Bewdley Medical Centre at 11.30am. There are currently 850,000 people living with the condition in England. For more information, please contact Nick Hoyle at bmcinfo@nhs.net

Community Engagement & Information Wednesday 30th October 10.00am -2.00pm Community Café, Bewdley Medical Centre, Dog Lane, Bewdley Bewdley’s Mayor Cllr. John Byng is hosting this event with local charity, Age UK Bromsgrove, Redditch & Wyre Forest (Age UK BRWF) on Wednesday 30th October 2019 in the Community Café at Bewdley Medical Centre. Members of the local community are invited to come along. Over 30% of the populations of Bewdley, Wribbenhall and the surrounding areas are over the age of 65. Age UK BRWF supports older people aged 50+ and their families by delivering a range of services aimed at promoting independence and enabling people to make the most of later life. Core to the charity’s work is its free Information and Advice service. As part of this event, one of the charity’s Advisors will be running a ‘pop-up’ Information & Advice surgery, offering support on a range of topics including social care, benefits and pensions advice, staying safe and independent at home, as well as support for carers. In addition to providing people with access to information about support and services, we are also planning a couple of specific sessions as part of the event: 11.30am - We are planning an open discussion about ‘Age Friendly Communities’ and what this means for people locally. 1.00pm - We will be holding a Dementia Friends Information session for anybody that would like to find out a little bit more about what it is like to live with dementia. We hope that people will be able to come along and join us on the 30th. For further information, please contact The Mayor via the Town Council Office (01299 400157) or Jo Hughes at Age UK BRWF (01527 871840/ Jo.Hughes@ageukbrwf.org.uk). 49
