News from St. Anne’s Primary School

On Your Bike! At the beginning of the summer term,Years Four and Five were invited to participate in ‘Bikeability’: a cycling course aimed at improving children’s general cycling skills and to build confidence in riding bikes on the roads. Before coming to school, all bikes had to be checked that they were in good working order and helmets were a must! Over the course of the week, our Year Five children learned about turning safely while signalling, emergency stops and understanding road positioning.Year Four children had a whole day’s course, learning to concentrate on how to mount and dismount correctly, how to start and stop, steer and check that it was safe to begin riding. We all had a great time, learnt a lot and are looking forward to going out on our next bike rides feeling more confident. Year 5 Activity Week Year Five children have also spent a week at Woodfield House, at Wolverley High School, taking part in a range of outdoor education activities including skiing, ‘bushcraft’, archery, team building and tubing. During the bushcraft sessions, children were taught how to light fires using flint and steel and also survival skills. Did you know you can survive without food for up to an incredible three weeks but only three days without water! For many of us, it was our first experience of skiing but by the end of the week, we were able to steer through cones and aim towards targets. Wow, what a week! Keeping Safe On The Internet At St Anne’s, we feel that using the internet to support our learning is very valuable and an important life skill to have, however, we also feel that using the internet safely is even more important. To encourage this, Key Stage Two children were involved in an interactive, exciting assembly - incorporating characters from an imaginary world called Interland - led by the ‘Parent Zone’ training team (on behalf of Google) which reminded us all about the key elements of internet safety: Be Sharp, Be Alert, Be Secure, Be Kind, Be Brave. On display in school is a framed certificate for our participation in the event and to show that we are now ‘Internet Legends’.

Welcome to June’s edition of The Bridge. Members of Bewdley Carnival Committee have been working hard throughout the year making preparations for this month’s big event. See the central colour pages to find out what’s on offer and to meet Bewdley’s Carnival Princesses. The Dancing Grannies are clearly not to be missed! Bewdley Rowing Club’s very popular Pub and Club Regatta takes place at the beginning of June. We know that summer has arrived when the river is alive with brightly coloured crews having their first go at competing, all supported by volunteers from the club. If you are one of those intrepid rookie rowers, tell us how it was for you. Another welcome feature of the season is Bewdley Museum’s programme of live theatre and music events in Jubilee Gardens in the centre of town. Turn to page 11 to find out more. One of the aims of our magazine is to connect people in their homes with events in the town. Bewdley Medical Centre promotes the health benefits of avoiding loneliness and taking part in activities. All the organisations promoted in our pages welcome visitors and new members. Perhaps this summer is the time to try something new. Details throughout the magazine. Transition Bewdley’s Repair Café has a temporary home in Bewdley Baptist Church this month. Turn to page 33 to meet one of the front of house team of this popular facility and to find out how you too can join in. The Scout Movement continues to be a success worldwide, bringing people together and preparing young people with skills for life through fun and adventure. The volunteers in Bewdley Scout Group want to continue to provide all that Scouting has to offer to the young people of the town, but they do need your help. Details on page 37. And finally see our colour pages to read the fascinating story of Gwendoline Pitt, one of Bewdley’s oldest residents who recently celebrated her 103rd birthday. Gill

Church News l

Holy Communion set to Mozart Sunday 30th June will see a slightly different form of worship in St. Anne’s church in Bewdley. The choir will sing Mozart’s Mass in C major as part of the service liturgy. This work was written in 1779 when Mozart was 23 and St. Anne’s church was only 30 years old. It is likely to have first been performed on Easter Sunday in Salzburg Cathedral. Its nickname, Coronation Mass, was coined in the early 19th century when it became the preferred music for coronations in the Imperial Court in Vienna. Come and join us to hear this lively and engaging work sung as it was intended as part of an act of Christian worship in St. Anne’s church at 9.30 on Sunday 30th June.

You are invited To an evening with the “Gospelites” singing music by Moody and Sankey. The “Gospelites” are a popular University of the Third Age Singing Group.

Bewdley Library After the success of our Berlin display in May we're going to be dumbing down a little for our 'Cheese Month' in June. Consisting mainly of children's books - kids obviously find this food fascinating - we'll also have a few non-fiction and even cheese themed fiction books for adults available. As Britain now produces more varieties of cheese than France we are confident that this will prove as interesting to the townsfolk of Bewdley as the capital of Germany has been. If I can tempt you further I'll just say that we'll also be putting on a wide variety of cheeses (and biscuits to go with them) for the large number of turophiles that I know are out there. On Saturday 8th June the crime author Vaseed Khan will be appearing at St George's Hall. Our display of this author, and others in the same genre, will still be up if you fancy reading some of his novels before you go and see him. Jonathan Halsall

Bewdley Community Theatre Group Bewdley Community Theatre Group welcomes new members who would like to get involved in acting, singing, dancing, backstage and front of house. The Group put on a fabulous show in January, the pantomime “Cinderella”, which attracted over 700 people over four shows at the Mercure Bewdley The Heath Hotel and received rave reviews. Preparations for next year’s pantomime Aladdin are in full swing and open auditions took place in May for the principal roles. The Group still needs enthusiastic cast members to join the ensemble and chorus line, and volunteers to help with backstage and front of house. The Theatre Group relies on grant funding and ticket sales to put on its performances and is currently one of the community causes taking part in the Tesco Bags of Help scheme. Each time you shop in Tesco in Kidderminster, Bewdley and Stourport, please pick up a little blue token and place it in the Theatre Group slot! For more information about the Theatre Group and how to become involved, please contact bewdleyctg@hotmail.com. Kyle Daisley

Happy Birthday to Gwen aged 103 Gwendoline Pitt, a resident at Summerdyne Nursing Home on Wyre Hill, celebrated her 103rd Birthday on 1st May 2019. Gwen was born on 1st May 1916 at Smethwick to Elizabeth and Harry Collins. She was one of eight siblings but sadly only she and a sister survived. When Gwen was six years old, her father passed away as a result of an industrial accident. Because her mother had to go out to work there was no other option than to put Gwen into foster care. She remained in care from the age of eight until she was fourteen. Gwen returned to Smethwick and was happy to be reunited with her sister Elsie who she loved very much. Gwen’s working life was as a machinist in a clothing factory. She enjoyed the work and made many friends. This is where she met her husband Joseph and they married when Gwen was 19 years old. She soon became pregnant and left work to be a fulltime mum. The couple went on to have three sons. 1n 1944, within eighteen months, Gwen’s sister died, tragically followed by the death of her first born son, aged six, and then her husband, aged just 27, from heart failure. Left as a widow with two very young children, Gwen had to work very hard to support them and undertook various jobs including housework, light commercial work such as assembling, hotel work, being a school dinner lady and domestic cleaning. Gwen’s most significant achievement was, after marrying Bill in June 1948 and nursing him through kidney disease, to be able to put a deposit on her own bungalow in Bromsgrove and getting involved in the Baptist Church. Gwen lost Bill to cancer in 1992. It was a great loss but she continued to be strong and carry on her ‘normal’ life. In 1984 Gwen’s youngest son departed to New Zealand which left her remaining family living close by to be that of her middle son Alan. Gwen managed her life extremely well but in August 2014 it was in her best interest to move into Summerdyne Nursing Home to continue her life. She has settled well and made many friends. Congratulations to Gwen!

Bewdley Medical Centre: Carers In this month’s column we are highlighting caring for others. According to The Carers Trust a carer is “...anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support.” Becoming a carer can be a very fulfilling and enriching experience, however some people find themselves becoming carers unexpectedly and committing their time and energy to others out of love or duty. There are many challenges people can face as carers such as: effects on their mental and physical health, especially fatigue; financial hardship; isolation due to the inability to socialise as before and wider impacts on their education or career. Locally we are fortunate enough to have access to the Worcestershire Association of Carers www.carersworcs.org.uk. They provide advice and guidance for all carers, and offer emotional support and practical tips to help ease some of the pressures that can arise from caring for others. To help support National Carers Week, Bewdley Medical Centre is hosting a drop-in coffee morning. Anybody is welcome to come along and find out more about being a carer and the help that is on offer. The event will be supported by the Worcestershire Association of Carers, so if you think you might be a carer or you want to find out more please come and join us at Bewdley Medical Centre in the Community Learning Space, on Wednesday 12th June 9am -1.30pm.

GWR “Project 9581” Raffle draw The Severn Valley Railway’s annual raffle draw took place at Bewdley Station on Sunday 5th May. The draw was made by the Mayor of the Bewdley Town Council, Councillor Roger Coleman, as his last local duty in his term of office. The raffle was for funds towards the project being worked on at Bewdley Station for a wheelchair-accessible buffet car for the SVR’s set of restored Great Western Railway period coaches. The project is being created out of a much modified but heavily run-down GWR coach, built in 1928 and withdrawn from British Railways passenger service in the 1950s. The raffle is expected to raise a useful £10k-£15k. Richard Hill 37

Transition Bewdley Repair Café. Front of House Sue Hayden, local artist and part of the Front of House Team, Bewdley Repair Café writes “I'm pleased to be part of the Repair Café team because I spent my childhood watching the adults in my life ‘make do and mend’. Even as I grew older and my parents were much better off, the ethos in my family was always about repairing what we had rather than buying a new one. There was a sense of achievement when something broken was brought back to life and, as children, we really respected those who had the skills to do it. The repairers at the cafe are people with these skills and as I help customers log in and out I get to see how happy people are when their item is no longer useless, especially when they've been told by commercial outlets that it's irreparable. Many items have sentimental value and, to their owners, are irreplaceable - there is real joy when they can be used or displayed again. Far more items brought to the café get fixed than don't and customers know they’re getting an honest, independent view if they can't be repaired. Because goods are relatively cheap and repair shops difficult to find, it's easy to get into the habit of throwing broken items away. The benefits to the environment of repairing rather than throwing away are obvious. The Repair Café Movement is a practical way of raising people’s awareness of this, utilising the skills repairers have and providing supportive, social opportunities for our communities.” The June Repair Café on Saturday 15th June will be at The Bewdley Baptist Church as our usual venue, St Georges Hall will be occupied by the Severn Valley railway AGM. We return to The Hall from July. Bring along your items for repair or sharpening. For enquiries or to volunteer, please contact John Rhymer on 01299 403424. Bewdley Scout Group Like all Scout Groups, the one is Bewdley is solely run by volunteers. Without these volunteers, young people would not have the chance to participate in the activities we have on offer. Our Scout Group is short of leaders and helpers in our Cubs and Scouts sections. Without volunteers coming forward now, we are at risk of these sections being lost. Scouting in Bewdley will disappear. Can you help inspire adventure? Scouting is all about having fun, making friends, learning new skills and the adventure of trying exciting outdoor activities! Cub Scouts are boys and girls aged 8 to 10½ years. Cubs take part in a wide range of activities designed to be interesting and challenging. A Cub Scout meeting consists of games and activities with plenty of time spent outdoors. Camps and holidays are some of the most memorable events of the year for Cubs. Scouts are boy and girls aged 10 to 14 years old. Outdoor activities feature prominently, with the highlight being camping. Throughout the year, Scouts learn various skills, such as map reading, camp cooking and first aid in preparation for camp. There is also a large range of activity badges for the Scouts to gain including, street sports, digital citizen, geocaching, rock climbing, potholing, gliding and photography. What's involved? Working with a small leadership team to deliver an exciting programme for Cubs and Scouts, with many outdoor opportunities. You will not only benefit from supporting young people, but also from gaining new skills and developing yourself. What are we looking for? You don't need to know anything about scouting to get involved - but you do need enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved to help provide great programmes to the young people in the section. We provide an induction, lots of ongoing support and training. Flexible volunteering. The only prerequisite to volunteer with us – apart from enthusiasm, of course – is that you're over 18. We know our volunteers lead busy lives, so we’re all about flexibility: whatever the time and skills available we can find a great role for you.You can choose to volunteer with us once a week, twice a month or once a year – in the thick of activities with young people or behind the scenes in management, executive or support roles. If you are interested in becoming a leader or helper at Cubs or Scouts please contact me at bewdleyscoutgroup@gmail.com for more information. Karen Gahan Group Scout Leader

The day starts at 4:00 pm with a unique opportunity for aspiring writers to participate in a crime writing workshop led by Vaseem who, before he was published, completed half-a-dozen unpublished novels and collected numerous rejection slips on the way. The title of the work shop is: How to write a best selling crime novel in 10 easy steps. In this session Vaseem will lay out the basics of how to go from a story idea to a complete crime novel. He will briefly discuss how to structure your work, how to create believable characters, how to use location, and the importance of a great hook for your plot. He will also touch on the ins and outs of the modern publishing industry. This workshop has limited spaces so please book early to avoid disappointment.Tickets cost £15. At 7:00 pm we present "Murder at the Grand Raj Palace - An evening with Vaseem Khan" Vaseem will be talking about his books and the influences behind them taking us on a journey from the days of the Raj to the heart of modern India, a colourful and conflicted environment of vast new wealth and historical problems. Tickets for this event are £10. Tickets can be bought from www.bewdleyfestival.org.uk or from the café in St. George's Hall, Load Street, Bewdley.

Bewdley Festival 11th - 19th October Bewdley Festival 2019 is bringing a local, national and international programme of multi-arts events to Wyre Forest this year. Tickets are now available on-line at www.bewdleyfestival.org.uk or from the Festival Office in St George’s Hall (10.00am – 2.00pm). Friday 11th October features ELIZA CARTHY, who together with her legendary father MARTIN CARTHY and some special friends, will be performing her ambitious new project “East”. October 12th brings JON CULSHAW and BILL DARE to the stage. Comedian/impressionist Jon Culshaw and legendary comedy writer/producer Bill Dare from BBC Radio 4’s Dead Ringers have come together for an evening of unscripted, spontaneous comedy and conversation. One of Britain’s most loved and admired poets, BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH returns to Bewdley on Sunday 13th October. He is also a playwright, musician, author, social commentator and actor. Naturalists have always proved very popular with Festival audiences, and Monday 14th October features KATE HUMBLE talking about her life working with animals and wildlife, the far flung places that this taken her to and the inspiring people she has met on her travels. On Tuesday 15th October BBC broadcaster ADRIAN CHILES joins us to tell stories of his career and answer questions from the audience. Two old rock’n’roll buddies chew the fat about their careers and the meaning of life exclusively for Bewdley Festival on Wednesday 16th October. An evening of conversation, unscripted in content, featuring internationally acclaimed broadcasters “Whispering” BOB HARRIS and DANNY BAKER promises to be informative and hilarious. On Thursday 17th October Bewdley Festival becomes part of the national tour featuring THE HORNE SECTION. They have had their own TV special at the London Palladium, an iTunes-chart-topping podcast, a hit BBC Radio 4 series and many years of sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and London’s West End. The final two nights of the Festival brings even more top class music to Bewdley. Friday 18th October will see Tex-Mex fun as LOS PACAMINOS take you on a tequila-fuelled journey into Mexican border blues. Los Pacaminos are all seasoned musicians, but undoubtedly one member is a musical favourite – a certain PAUL YOUNG, one of the UK’s best loved vocalists, fronts the band. This show is all Tex-Mex and will not feature Paul’s solo song hit parade. Saturday 19th October puts together a double bill of the highest quality of current popular music. Opening the evening, Birmingham based international singer/songwriter PETE WILLIAMS (famous from his Dexys Midnight Runners days) and his band. His new album H.O.L.L.A.N.D has received acclaim from all quarters and is certain to be highly featured in his set. Following Pete, one of the fastest growing bands in the UK. ORPHAN COLOURS, fronted by Steve Llewellyn, bring their unique style up from London, giving us an opportunity to hear them close at hand in such an intimate environment before their inevitable rise to bigger venues takes over. See www.bewdleyfestival.org.uk for more details including the full daytime programme. 49

Bewdley Town Council News June 2019 Change at the Town Council The round of elections held on 2nd May for Wyre Forest District Council and Bewdley Town Council saw changes at both tiers. Following the contest between 25 candidates vying for the Town Council’s 13 seats there are now six new councillors joining the seven re-elected councillors. New Town Mayor Cllr John Byng was elected to take on the role of Town Mayor for the current civic year at the Annual Mayor-Making ceremony held on 10th May at which there was a good turnout of visiting civic dignitaries from neighbouring towns. Cllr Byng’s chosen charities for the year are the local branches of Age UK and Guide Dogs for the Blind. Support for the Mayor’s good causes will be welcomed. Town Young Mayors In a joint initiative with The Bewdley School, the Town Council provides an opportunity to the youth of the town to engage with the democratic process. This entails the appointment of youth representatives to attend the Town Council meetings taking on the role of Young Town Mayor and deputy Young Mayors. This year we welcome Elizabeth Thomas as the Young Mayor with Storm Powell and Jacob Wilks as Deputies. Thanks go to last year’s Young Mayor and Deputy, Star Powell and Erin Boddice. Town Council Finances If you are curious about how the money that is collected from you as part of your council tax bill is spent by the Town Council, there is an opportunity every year to have a look at the accounts. It is expected that this year’s dates for public inspection will be from 4th June until 15th July inc. (Monday to Friday) available at the Town Council office. More information and a copy of the Annual Governance and Accountability Return will be available on the website: www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. Wyre Hill Sand Park It looks unlikely that the new play equipment will be ready for installation at the start of the summer holidays. This is because the chosen item is not off-the-peg but has been designed in accordance with the wishes of everyone who contributed to the survey that was carried out by the Friends of Wyre Hill Sand Park last year. Wicksteeds are now looking at installation in the week beginning 5th August. Better late than never, it is sure to be a fantastic addition to the play area. Contact During open hours, the Town Council administration team can be contacted at 25(A) Load Street; or by phone on 01299 400157 or by email to townclerk@bewdleytowncouncil.org. Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.00pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 3rd June and 1st July 2019. Meeting Agendas and Minutes are posted on town notice boards and are available on the Town Council’s website www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. 51

June in the Forest I try not to be too gloomy in my articles even though the overall picture regarding our wildlife is inescapably bad, so it’s wonderful that I can bring some good news. Following last month’s article which mentioned the disappearance of Nightjars from the Wyre Forest a friend got in touch with me to say that he had a heard a Nightjar ‘churring’ behind his house on the edge of Ribbesford Woods last summer. Let’s hope that it returns this summer, bringing some friends with it! I have waited to hear the Cuckoo with some anxiety in recent years. It’s a huge change from earlier days: an elderly lady who used to live along Tanners Hill told me that the noise of Cuckoos calling incessantly in the late spring and summer in her youth was maddening (enough to send anyone ‘cuckoo’). The precarious state of the bird species such as Meadow Pipit, whose nests they invade, combines with the dangers of migration from sub-Saharan Africa to threaten the continued presence of this iconic bird in our forest. However I was relieved to hear my first Cuckoo on 24th April and have since heard the distinctive call, sometimes distant, sometimes loud and nearby, many times during May. Another chance encounter was with a Woodcock, which flew over us as we walked back to the farm at dusk recently. It was flying low and uttering a squeak, much like a child’s or dog’s toy when trodden on, at regular intervals. I checked that I hadn’t trodden on a frog then concluded it was a rare sighting of this heavily camouflaged woodland bird which looks much like a Snipe, with a long beak for probing soft ground. At this time of the year the males perform a courtship flight known as ‘roding’. They fly a circular track at dusk, uttering a strange croak or groan followed by the squeak I’ve described. The sound we heard lacked the croak, or at least we didn’t hear it, so it may have been a male or a female. Norman Hickin records that this goes on for about an hour, usually from March until August. The wonders of a dusk walk are arguably as rewarding as those of the dawn walk I was advocating last month! Now that the forest has closed up and new leaves block the long views it is harder to see Fallow Deer. This applies even to the white deer, which make up a small but increasing percentage of the Wyre herd. This is the month when fawns are born, hidden among undergrowth by their mothers in the very quietest parts of the forest. Let’s try not to disturb their peace. Linda Iles
