Santa Barbara County Since 1984, when Ken Brown founded Byron his goal has been to produce spectacular Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County. His efforts not only helped the world recognize that Santa Barbara was a premiere appellation for both varietals, but Brown is regarded as one of the pioneers of Pinot Noir. Byron’s single vineyard small-lot, hands-on wine making techniques have helped contribute to Byron’s success. Wine maker Jonathon Nagy has taken that tradition and has released Santa Barbara Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that are delicious, lush and approachable in every way. Bar Smarts! Can you name this Brandtastic Classic? This brand was first produced in 1945 and it was the only liquor available to submarine officers at the Midway Islands in World War II. In the late 1940s, the original name, “Black Label”, was changed at the suggestion, by the Master Distiller because he thought it had a smooth, luxurious taste. In 1969, this brand began using relatively unknown models chosen annually to appear in advertisements. They included Christie Brinkley, Kim Alexis and Kelly Emberg.

VERNOR’S GINGER ALE 1866

The oldest ginger ale sold in the US, shares the title of America’s oldest surviving soft drink with Hires Root Beer. James Vernor was a Detroit pharmacist who had attempted to duplicate a popular ginger ale imported from Dublin, Ireland. When Vernor was called off to serve in the Civil War, he stored the syrup base of 19 ingredients, including ginger and vanilla flavorings, in an oak cask. After returning four years later, his soft drink had been changed by the aging process in the wood. Vernor called the unique flavor “Deliciously different,” which remains the drink’s motto to this day. He sold his ginger ale at his drug store fountain and by 1880, he began selling bottling franchises in nearby cities. In 1886, he sold his drug store to sell Vernors Ginger Ale only. ‘Woody’ the gnome became the mascot for the robust drink, which was a leading brand until the end of prohibition when ‘Dry’ Ginger Ale became the standard because it mixed better with alcohol. Vernors maintained regional popularity but the Vernor family sold in 1966 and the brand went national in the 80’s. Vernor’s is available everywhere

NAKED JUICE ADS TELL ‘NAKED TRUTH’

Naked Juice, which had formerly relied on grassroots marketing, launched the first national ad campaign for the premium bottled juice brand. PepsiCo kicked off on digital properties and a Facebook page and the direction will be to highlight the brand’s promise of—”no added sugar or preservatives”—and invites consumers to submit their own “naked truth.” Digital banner ads along with Print Ads target consumers ages 25 to 35, who are “health-conscious, active and balanced in their food choices.” One print ad shows a woman holding a bottle of Naked Juice to her lips. The copy reads, “This is fruit’s higher purpose.” Sales of super premium acai-based juices like Naked, Odwalla and Bolthouse Farms have held up relatively well in a downturn, despite the products’ high price points.

The Coca-Cola’s version of lemon-lime soft drink is Sprite and it still dominates the ‘albino cola’ segment of the soft drink market. So, in an effort to split the segment, PepsiCo has replace the high fructose corn syrup in favor of sugar and has rebranded the already caffeine free beverage Sierra Mist Natural. A real sugar soda are gaining consumer interest and while 7-UP says they are reformulating its recipe and reworking its graphics they make no mention of adding sugar. They do plan to spend the equivalent of a whole year’s ad budget on in just the last four months of 2010.

HOLIDAY BREWS Dogfish Head Brewery Punkin’ Ale ABV 7.0% IBU 28 There are great variances in what brewers call the great Pumpkin…but this category’s roots trace to 1994 when Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Brewery first made this seasonal brew at the phenomenon known as ‘The Punkin’ Chunkin’ Contest. Punkin’ Ale was brewed, named and won a recipe contest and since then has been a welcomed addition to the fall festival held in Delaware. This full-bodied brown ale has craft structure with evident spice, lighter hops, and plenty of pumpkin flavors. Dogfish Punkin’ Ale is brewed with pumpkin meat, organic brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and finishes with allspice. Dogfish Head established the standard in the category with Punkin’ Ale and it’s hearty enough for cool autumn nights and pleasant enough for a holiday dessert.

Southern Tier Brewing Company ABV 8.8% Pumpking Imperial This seasonal from New York State’ Southern Tier Brewing Company is wowing critics. From the immediate aroma of fresh baked pumpkin pie to the deliciously hidden and almost 9% ABV, you realize that this brew should be invited for Thanksgiving. Besides the intense flavor of pumpkin, the balance is recognizable from the layers of cinnamon, vanilla, brown sugar and spice to the creaminess that almost tastes like whipped cream. Southern Tier has made some big strides for a company that was founded in 2004. Now in 20 states, they are known for their memorable kick, as well as their outstanding quality and ‘craft’. Available on draft and in 22 oz. bottles. Distributed by Suncoast Beverages and Coastal Beverages.

It’s Not ScFi…It’s the Annual World Famous Punkin’ Chunkin’ Championship

It’s held the first weekend after Halloween in Delaware, and others like it are held in other parts of the country, but the annual World Championship Punkin’ Chunkin’ Championship will be better than ever. This pumpkin-throwing contest is televised on the SciFi Channel on Thanksgiving, and competing teams construct and fire a variety of pumpkin-launching devices, including catapults, trebuchets, centrifugal machines, and pneumatic cannons. It started in 1986 in Lewes, DE but the event has moved to accommodate the crowds. Contestants compete in divisions against machines of the same type, and a new world record of 5,545 feet of ‘pumpkin flight’ was recorded in Utah in September. “This Halloween the most popular mask is the Arnold Schwarzenegger mask. The best part you ask? With a mouth full of candy you sound just like him.”

Franciscan Cabernet Sauvignon CALIFORNIA-NAPA 2007

This Napa winery, whose roots are deeply embedded in the celebrated Oakville District soil, delivers a Cab that has enough complexity and mid-palate fruit to keep both Old World and New World fans happy. A lush and light approach gives way to pronounced red fruit with and dry, mouth-puckering tannins. This one is about terrior, the famed bench and a neighbor at the fence line named Silver Oak. Franciscan is a Napa Cabernet of high quality, with delicious value.

Markham Vineyards Winemaker Kimberlee Nicholls and President Bryan Del Bondio have consulted the CIA on sourcing and producing Greystone Cellars for the past 12-years. Wine Fact #1:

RED BLEND AUSTRALIA 2008

This unique blend of five grapes varietals is picked from different vineyards throughout the famed Barossa region of Australia. Three classic Barossa red varieties; Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre mix well with Tempranillo and Carignane grapes, resulting in a easy drinking and approachable wine. From start to finish this is gem that reveals layers of subtle complexity. Harmonious and versatile, this wine finishes well and not only complements a wide variety of proteins and cuisines, it stands alone nicely.

Seven Daughters, Red Blend California 09’

This wine tempts the taste buds with flavors from seven California grown grape varietals. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah, Carignane and Sangiovese help complete an artist’s palette for your palate. Expect plenty of medium-bodied fruit and the contrast of a hint of spice at finish. Over all, this balanced and fruity blend drinks well and complements a sophisticated and active lifestyle. We detect flavors of blackberry, peppery jam and cherry with subtle vanilla tones. It finishes well, is priced right and gets better with every sip.

The longest recorded champagne cork flight was 177 feet and 9 inches, four feet from level ground at Woodbury Vineyards in New York State.

US WINERIES INCREASE THEIR USE OF CORK CLOSURES

Award Winning Winemaker Melissa Bates Scores Again!

Data from AC Nielsen shows that premium domestic wineries are increasing their use of cork closures, with brands using cork showing higher annual sales growth over those using alternative closures. The survey found that 72 of the 100 top-selling wine brands are using cork closures, which represents a rise of 7.5%. Those same brands sealed with cork closures posted an average annual sales increase of 10.2%, compared to annual growth of 3.7% for alternative closure types, according to the survey. The benefits of real cork are eco-friendly as well. Cork is recyclable, biodegradable and supports sustainable stewardship of Mediterranean cork oak forests, which provide one of the world’s richest ecosystems. On the flip side is that metal screw caps and plastic stoppers produce 10-24 times more greenhouse gases and consume as much as five times more non-renewable energy than real cork over their life-cycles.

RED WINE MAKES BLOOD VESSELS HEALTHIER Chinese researchers may have medical proof of the French paradox. A study conducted by Taipei Veterans General Hospital shows that drinking a moderate amount of red wine daily could potentially lower the risk of cardiovascular disease by helping give a boost to cells that repair blood vessels. In terms of prevention and health care, research supported that moderate red wine consumption can make blood vessels healthier. Red wine has been widely touted as having beneficial medical properties and attributed by the French paradox -- the fact that the French have a diet heavy in saturated fats but have a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease.

New Tobacco-Free Coffee Shops Crushing Amsterdam’s Social Life

Dutch coffee shops, long considered as synonymous with the Netherlands as tulips and Ketel One, face a new challenge when a proposal to ban smoking tobacco in restaurants and cafes goes into effect. Government in the Netherlands has proposed regulations for the coffee houses that have become a worldwide tourism draw. The new law, will allow customers to light up more potent tobacco-free pure cannabis joints but bans milder ‘spliff blends’ in which tobacco is mixed with cannabis. The move threatens to put hundreds of them out of business, and 1600 coffee shops are for sale. The law also forces shops to be “members only” clubs, which would effectively bar the tourists who fly into Amsterdam for a lost weekend. “It’s a bit like saying to someone you can go into a cafe and you can buy a beer, but you can’t drink it there - you’ll have to stick to whisky, rum and vodka,” said Paul Wilhelm, owner of De Tweede Kamer, a popular Amsterdam coffee shop since 1985. Wilhelm, said the law was in danger of “tearing the heart out” of Amsterdam’s social life. COFFEE FACT: It is estimated that coffee originated in an Ethiopian province called Kaffa. But, there is controversy about where it originated..

Advertising and New Flavors Makes ‘Via’…Viable Sales of its Via instant coffee are brisk so Starbucks is rolling out two new flavored Via products with a TV and print campaign in time for the holidays. It’s all about the vanilla and cinnamon and the ads show vanilla beans cascading onto a burlap coffee bag and cinnamon sticks, along with the established Via Mocha and Via Caramel. Starbucks launched Via in September 2009 with $17 million dollars in media support and global sales passed $100 million. Starbucks will sample Via at its stores, and is dangling a free tall coffee with the purchase of one of the flavored coffees. COFFEE FACT: The two most commonly grown species of the coffee plant are Coffea Canephora and C. Arabica, which are cultivated in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

The Mother of ‘Sweet Tea’ Was Green! The oldest known recipe for sweet ice tea called for green tea! Marion Cabell Tyree, who was born in Texas, but lived in Virgina, had her Sweet Tea recipe published in 1879 in a community cookbook called Housekeeping in Old Virginia. Prior to World war II, most tea that was consumed was green tea. When the major sources of green tea were cut off from the US during the war, Americans were forced to drink tea almost exclusively from British-controlled India which produced black tea. Since then, Americans still predominantly drink black tea. COFFEE FACT: In 2003, coffee was the world’s sixth-largest legal agricultural export in value. Reelin’ in the Beers Big-Beer is Just Sick…Not Dead According to UBS Survey and Report Big Brand Beers had 20 years of slow but steady volume growth but despite two consecutive years of declining sales at unprecedented rates the international banking and financial firm UBS argued in research published this week that the doomsday scenario isn’t really happening. UBS said the strategy of AnheuserBusch InBev and Miller-Coors of raising prices faster than inflation is the correct one. “Volumes have been weak because of unemployment and not because of some structural issue,” they wrote. “The big U.S. beer brands are NOT dead.” Industry analysts believe that sales volumes fell because of a mix of demographics and economics. Job loss in core beer drinking demographics trimmed beer sales and led consumers to trade down to cheaper brands. “However, as the economy recovers, these consumers will return to the brands they prefer.”

Miss Rheingold Is On A Mission As Vintage Beer Returns

The once famous jingle “My beer is Rheingold, the dry beer” was more than the advertising… it was part of the culture. Now, Rheingold Beer is back and has relaunched in New York City. Drinks America CEO Pat Kenny is re-launching the legendary beverage that began in 1883 and was so wildly popular that it controlled 35% of New York’s Beer entire market from 1950-1960. The company featured an annual ‘Miss Rheingold Pageant’ that many felt due to advertising visibility, was as important and prestigious as Miss America. “She was never seen drinking beer. She was offering it always to her friends and her fans”, said Ann Newman some fifty years after she was a Miss Rheingold finalist. Newman is working on an upcoming Brooklyn Historical Society show on the brand’s iconic ads. he company’s headquarters was in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. Rheingold was the official beer of the New York Mets, and its advertisements featured John Wayne, Jackie Robinson, and the Marx Brothers. Rheingold shut down operations in 1976, when they were unable to compete with the large national breweries. PAGE 12

Although this craft beer classic is unavailable in Florida, it continues to generate great interest everywhere. Brewed commercially in 1991, the cult following has grown to bigger than distribution. Now available in 26 states, Fat Tire and all the New Belgium Brews have loyal fans everywhere, and for many reasons. Anne Fitch’s art labels have gained attention since the start, and the brewery is the only 100% windpowered in America. Outside Magazine named New Britain the “Best Place to Work in America’ and both the mystique and the quality of Fat Tire Beer lives up to the hype. This beer is just delicious.

BAR STOOL BANTER

“Rheingold, It’s My Beer” David Moulton ‘Bar Stool Banter’

Sometimes when “Smokey” asks me to write a little something for the Beverage Underground I struggle to find a trendy topic. I was struggling for this issue when he simply told me, “Rheingold is back. Re-launched in NYC.” I got chills. Do you remember your first drink? Mine was Rheingold Extra Dry. The Official Beer of the New York Yankees and New York Giants. My grandfather was a Yankees/Giants fan and a beer drinker. So naturally, that was the beer of choice in their house. I vividly remember every single time opening their fridge and seeing 12-24 red and white cans of Rheingold. I spent a lot of time with my maternal grandparents. They would have 2 beers each over dinner, after a day’s work. Nothing more but nothing less. Then while watching television at some point during the evening, grandfather would have a J&B Old Fashioned and grandmother a Vodka Gimblet (don’t muddle the fruit). I would drink milk or soda. One night during dinner, next to my milk was a small juice glass. Why? I remembered thinking, “It’s not breakfast. I’m not having OJ with dinner.” I was a teenager. My grandfather poured himself a Rheingold and then instead of topping off the final few ounces, poured it into my juice glass. Wide-eyed, I looked at my grandmother like, “is this OK?” And then a lifetime relationship with beer was born. Thanks to Rheingold Extra Dry. Now it wasn’t a prime rib or my grandmother’s pot roast,... but it was good! In the 80’s when I left my home state to attend college, Rheingold could not be found in the hills of Scranton, PA. Plenty of Rolling Rock and Yuengling,... but no Rheingold. Now its back! My youth lives a bit longer. It faces a tough challenge but then again a generation ago, Rolling Rock and Yuengling were Pennsylvania only staples at “cheep beer Wednesdays in college.” Now they are served nationwide, on tap for more per pint than we paid per case. So Good Luck Rheingold Extra Dry. Welcome Back! What was your first drink?

“Raising a glass to another one that bit the dust”

When the China Pavilion closed in North Naples last month there was no announcement or good-byes. The once popular Chinese restaurant had been a perennial five-star selection of Gulfshore Life but soon after closing, a story of back taxes, health violations and sketchy business practices emerged. After 25-years in business and swirling debt, the owners walked… leaving the lights on. (and food rotting in refrigerators)

‘Lemon Drop’- The Movie’ Pays Tribute to Classic Absolut Citron Shooter

Miss Lemon Drop Search SATURDAY, OCT 23 @ Voda Lounge

The stage is set the action. “When her beloved kittens are mysteriously taken from her, this sweet girl next door will turn sour doing whatever it takes to track them down”. LemonDrop, the movie, stars the comedic and sexy actress Ali Larter from ‘Final Destination’ and ‘Legally Blonde’ as ‘Lemon Drop’ along with Martin Kove as Johnny Thunderbird, from ‘The Karate Kid’ and ‘Rambo: First Blood Part II’. The leggy Larter is a crime stopping, beehived heroine wrapped in yellow latex who is out to prove that ‘Sweet Never Hurt So Good’. The movie is kitschy-cool and could be considered a second generation spoof of Quentin Tarantino‘s Kill Bill movies, but also is a fun and entertaining homage to Russ Meyer‘s campy, 70′s B-Movies ‘sexploitation films’ like ‘Supervixens’ and “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls’. See the movie on Absolut’s facebook page. SEE THE MOVIE WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/ABSOLUT

For over two years, a growing online audience has discovered BeverageUnderground.com, an informative website that introduces the products, the people, the promotions and the places that are changing the beverage and hospitality industry. Well over a year ago, this local variation of the Beverage Underground emerged in print as a trade and marketing publication directed to the working staffs of over 350 area locations. The intent was to provide an educational edge to professionals by providing an insight and connection to the three tiers of our industry and to improve both sales and service at every level. “The Beverage Industry is so important to this area and the overall economy. There is no doubt that that there are still great things happening in our ever-changing hospitality community. Our industry employs a strong and vital workforce and we serve and entertain the visitors that will contribute to our recovery’, said Editor Larry ‘Smokey’ Genta. Earlier this year, ‘Smokey’ and the Beverage Underground made it to the radio airwaves with a topical and lively talk show directed to buyers, sellers and consumers. Beverage Underground recently moved to the local ESPN affiliate 770 ESPN with a weekly show co-hosted by bubbly and talented Chelsi Murphy who is a full-time manager at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse in Naples. “The show is great fun and a great forum for everybody in our business. It’s really about ‘what we do’ as sales and services professionals”, said Murphy. Beverage Underground Radio not only joined 770 ESPN radio here in Southwest Florida, but is also broadcasted on www. BlogTalkRadio.com, the largest internet radio network in the world and is available by podcast. All shows stream live on the internet, and are archived at www.BeverageUnderground.com
