{From The Founder} Always Look for the Good In the wake of what seems like doom and gloom, there is a silver lining. And I think most of us know this. If we open our eyes, minds and hearts, and truly let ourselves embrace the possibilities, this is a special time for reflection, creation and reinvention. We have been given a “time out” and a chance to be “out with the old and in with the new.” That of course means different things to each of us personally, but today I will share what it means to Best Self and our amazing community. First of all, we have been busy during the covid break. Our August/September Over 40 & Fabulous! issue debuts our newly redesigned magazine featuring a new look, new logo, new departments and an overall cleaner, more modern feel. I would like to shout out a special thank you to our art director, Dona Halliday, who gave us this fresh new look without changing who we are. In other words, she created a better version of Best Self! We also have a brand new website (so brand new, we are still updating and adding to it) to appropriately represent where the Best Self brand is today and more importantly, where we are going.

{

While we will continue to bring you inspiring stories and the very best advice Atlanta experts have to offer on health, beauty, anti-aging, mindful living, learning, adventure, fitness, nutrition and more, the delivery of that information has shifted. Best Self is so much more than a magazine. It is a living, breathing community of like-minded individuals who drive the conversation and embody all things best self. Online engagement, community events, Live forums, video chats and an influencer portal are just some of the ways we will connect our community of Best Self enthusiasts and experts moving forward. We are embracing this opportunity to strengthen our connections through new platforms. We already have a thriving community of followers and businesses, and our new website will serve as the “home base” for making those connections even more meaningful. So if you love Best Self and you strive to be the best version of yourself, go to www.BestSelfAtlanta.com and join our community!

Congratulations to our Class of 2020, who are beautiful inside and out.

{

Nothing could better represent an authentic “tribe/community” than our Over 40 & Fabulous! family. We are celebrating our 10th year of this special event which has been the catalyst for introducing women and men who have bonded, in many cases for life. They have become friends, mentors and support systems for each other and are the best ambassadors and advocates I could ever dream possible for Best Self.

Best Self is so much more than a magazine. It is a living, breathing community of like-minded individuals who drive the conversation and embody all things best self.

INGREDIENTS ■ 2 Autumn Glory Apples, peeled and diced ■ 1/2 lemon, juiced ■ 1 tablespoon flour ■ 1 cup old fashioned oats ■ 1 teaspoon hemp seeds ■ 1 teaspoon amaranth seeds ■ 1/2 cup ground flaxseeds ■ 1/2 cup smooth almond butter ■ 1/3 cup honey ■ 1 teaspoon vanilla ■ 1/4 teaspoon salt

■ Optional: 1 tablespoon salted butter, melted ■ Optional: Greek yogurt or vanilla ice cream

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, mix diced apples with lemon juice and flour. If you want extra flavor in your recipe, you can add melted butter over apples. In a separate bowl, mix oats, seeds, almond butter, honey, vanilla and salt. Stir until everything is integrated. Distribute apple mixture into mini cast iron dutch ovens (or any glass baking dish). Cover with oat mixture. If using a baking dish, cover with aluminum foil. Bake for 10 minutes. Top with greek yogurt for a special breakfast or ice cream for a delicious dessert. Enjoy!

Is Your Skin Facing Maskne? Industry legend, Lyn Ross, LME, and the esthetic professionals at Institut’ DERMed are facing a new question these days—“Is it Maskne?” The term refers to the added irritation occurring

in acne-prone skin caused by active skin care ingredients enclosed behind a mask,

physical irritation and the ideal warm-damp environment for Propioni (aka P. Acnes) bacteria to flourish. Totarol extract from the Totara tree of New Zealand is found on Institut’ DERMed’s list of clean ingredients, offering antimicrobial properties to help Maskne. With super antioxidant properties, it’s a gentle alternative to harsher synthesized ingredients like benzoyl peroxide. Details: 5589 Peachtree Rd., Atlanta; www.idermed.com bestselfatlanta.com

BEAUTY BOSSES 8 Pros to Know

Meet the Entrepreneurs and Aesthetic Experts who will have you looking your absolute best! Atlanta’s Ultimate Beauty Boss for Eyelid (blepharoplasty) Surgery

Q

Can blepharoplasty be performed safely in the office?

W

e always discuss anesthetic options and procedure locations depending on which procedures we are going to perform. As a general rule, the more invasive the procedure the more anesthetic is required. So in simple terms, yes, usually an upper blepharoplasty can be safely performed in the office setting. If we are adding a brow lift and/or lower eyelid procedures, then we generally recommend IV sedation or formal anesthesia.

Q

What qualifications make you a Boss?

A

Our passion for this treatment makes us a boss! We have seen firsthand how our patients benefit from this treatment. HydraFacial is always innovating and we do extra trainings to learn about boosters and how to combine them in the treatments. We are now in the process of launching the Hydroderm treatment which replaces the standard microderm.

Q

How does the treatment work?

Elizabeth Thompson

A

HydraFacial is so much more than a facial! It is a four-step treatment that includes cleansing, exfoliating, extracting, and hydrating the skin with serums that are infused into pores with the HydraPeel Tip, a pen-like device.

Q

What questions should I ask about the procedure?

A

Ask about what to expect from a treatment. It is important for your aesthetician to have an understanding of your skin. HydraFacial can be customized with different boosters to target specific concerns. Other questions to ask: How often should I have this treatment? How long do the results last?

Q

What benefits can be expected as a result?

A

A hydrated, glowing, brighter complexion! HydraFacial helps lighten fine lines and visible pores. Patients tell us their skin feels firmer with improved texture and complexion immediately following the treatment. You can expect to leave your treatment with deeply cleaned smooth skin!

Daisy Burris

Elizabeth Thompson & Daisy Burris Elizabeth Thompson and Daisy Burris are the dynamic duo who head the Aesthetics division at Dermatology Affiliates. Q

A

What qualifications make you a Boss?

I have performed rhinoplasties on thousands of patients and helped them achieve an image that aligns with how they perceive themselves. Additionally, I have taught multiple rhinoplasty courses and written several textbooks on plastic surgery of the nose throughout my career.

Q

How does the treatment work?

A

I perform a one-hour procedure to refine the shape of the nose through incisions hidden on the inside without packing. This procedure is known as closed rhinoplasty.

Q

What questions should I ask about the procedure?

A

A great question to ask about rhinoplasty is: Do you offer computer imaging to show me the possible results? I utilize an imaging program that allows my patients and I to work together, integrating their ideas and my expertise. We collaboratively communicate together to create the desired image.

Q

What benefits can be expected as a result?

A

Beauty is about proportion and balance. The goal is to create a nose that compliments the rest of the face. Breathing is also often improved with the procedure. BEFORE

Q

What qualifies you to be a Beauty Boss?

A

When I was a hygienist in 1984, patients would always grab the mirror to see if their teeth were whiter. Although people care about the health of their teeth, how their teeth look is also incredibly important to them. In 1987, I went back to dental school to become a cosmetic dentist and I’ve studied this field ever since. I have an artistic eye and one of my hobbies is interior design. I can envision the final result and I can also offer my patients many treatment options.

Q

Why are porcelain veneers the gold standard in smile makeovers?

A

It’s the most conservative, beautiful, and lifelike restoration we have that most resembles enamel. Think of them as contact lenses for the teeth.

Q

Who is a candidate?

Dr. Dina Giesler Atlanta Smiles & Wellness

Dr. Dina Giesler has performed thousands of cosmetic procedures including porcelain veneers over the last 20 years creating beautiful smiles and transforming lives. She is also MAGD (Master of the Academy of General Dentistry) certified, a designation which is held by less than 3% of practicing dentists. Dr. Dina Giesler views comprehensive dentistry as a lifelong commitment to your health and self-image. By providing natural aesthetic dentistry, the experienced cosmetic dentist makes sure patients can capitalize on their greatest asset: their smile.

A

Anyone who is embarrassed of their smile or feels that they have teeth that are worn, discolored, crooked or not attractive.

Q

What should people know before they choose a cosmetic dentist?

A

Years of experience is extremely important and patients need to choose a doctor that does these procedures on a daily basis.

Q

How much do porcelain veneers cost?

A

The national average ranges from $1,200 to $3,500.

A Twist on Traditional Zen

HOW PEACH OUT POWER YOGA “MAKES” YOGIS IN By Jennifer Colosimo

What’s better than a fitness studio featuring your favorite workout class every single day? One that offers every kind of workout class under one roof. That was the idea that launched the newly renamed Peach Out Power Yoga in East Cobb, its new designation reinforcing the studio’s tried-and-true reputation for a fun, laid-back interpretation of traditional yoga. As a result, it’s the community’s one-stop shop for all things fitness. “The name Peach Out Power Yoga speaks to who we are,” says owner Karen Patton. “It’s been fun to create a name now that we really know who we are as a studio.” That “we” is a studio where anyone off the street can come in and feel comfortable and confident taking a yoga class. It’s a relaxed atmosphere, far removed from the perfect poses and beautiful bodies reputation some traditional yoga studios carry. “We’re not your typical yoga studio,” Patton says. “We’re

People have an image of what yoga is, and I think that can be scary for some, but our brand is vibrant, and although we absolutely deliver a powerful, traditional yoga class, we add our own twist and personality to it.” Not being in Buckhead, Patton knew it wouldn’t be easy to attract yoga clientele. She sought to “make” yogis instead, and offered something different. On her class calendar you’ll see a little bit of everything: non-heated classes to hot power yoga, basic fundamentals and slow flow to advanced classes, and fitness-minded classes such as Yogalates, Sculpt & Flow,

IS IN EAST COBB Yin and meditation. Every class adapts to fit a variety of skill levels, interests and workout personalities. Plus, Patton carries chic yoga gear (it’s the only local studio that sells lululemon), and new clients can try a class for free before committing to a membership. “We’ve built such a great community,” says Patton, who started that camaraderie from the ground up, seeking out beginner yogis and offering them a place they could belong. “Everybody

that walks through the door knows each other. This is their happy place, their home and the people here are truly their friends. I’m very proud of what I’ve built here. It is exactly what I had hoped for.”

“You really have to come take a class so you know what I’m trying to describe, because there is just a feeling the second you walk in the studio,” says Patton, who teaches classes alongside a staff of 13 instructors. “We’ve got something really special. Every instructor brings their own personality, style and energy to their classes, and I think that’s why people connect—it’s authentic. My energy and what I envisioned, I think it’s infectious. My instructors embraced it from day one, and so did our clientele. It feels like one big family, really.” Because her instructors are part of her family, you’ll most likely spot Karen at her studio, but she does frequent the (also newly named) East Cobb Tavern and Los Bravos Mexican Restaurant and shops Ivy Lane in Marietta. Feel the Flow If there’s one thing Karen Patton has her finger on the pulse of, it’s what the people want—at least, when it comes to yoga practice. When she opened the studio, she knew she wanted a laid-back community for people to practice in—and she might just be a trendsetter. “If you want to bring the fitness/workout person to yoga, you have to meet their needs and give them something that they’re excited about,” says Patton. Her answer, and one that’s catching on quickly around town, is classes that get creative—maybe even a little funky. Her Rockin’ Flow class often kicks off with something creative like the cha cha slide or the cupid shuffle. People pack the room, and anyone who wants to can get “their butts kicked with a good workout.”

2020 Partners in Health Men’s Health Myths Are Going Viral By Scott D. Miller, MD

day. This can be the single most effective way to prevent the spread of infections. • Stay hydrated. The mucous membranes that line our oral and nasal cavities provide a barrier to viruses. However, these linings must remain moist in order to be effective. • Ensure a proper amount of sleep and exercise to boost your immune system.

Myth #3: I should delay my routine medical care until this pandemic passes.

“Going viral” has taken on new meaning in the last several months. Not only are the news cycles fast enough to make your head spin, but our appetites for information have also perpetuated conflicting information surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Not intending to provide a comprehensive lesson about this health risk, here are some common myths that we should put to rest:

Myth #1: The virus does not affect healthy men (or at least not as severely). Although less likely to be severe, this virus can easily infect even healthy young men. Unfortunately, some of these lower risk men have died from COVID-19. Just as important, men with mild symptoms can infect their friends and loved ones who may be at higher risk for a poor outcome.

Myth #2: There is not much I can do to prevent the disease. As the months pass—and the economy declines—we are less likely to remain in a bubble. Each person must find their own way of balancing prevention and a return to normalcy. It’s all about reducing exposure. Even when social distancing is not possible, these tips can help reduce the risk of infection: • Create space between you and others, even if it’s less than the recommended six feet. Every bit helps. • Wash or sanitize your hands repeatedly throughout the

Medical offices and hospitals have become extremely safe environments when it comes to protecting patients and healthcare workers. Although grocery stores, restaurants, and other local businesses have taken many thoughtful precautions, healthcare facilities take it to the extreme when it comes to sanitation, screening, testing, isolation, and mask use. The risk of delaying the diagnosis and management of serious medical conditions is far greater than contracting COVID-19.

Myth #4: No one can see me smile behind my mask. Yes, it is still worth smiling. Not only will your mask move upwards, but your eyes and upper face will reveal the happy expression. After all, smiles are more contagious than any virus. Look for my article on “Men’s Health Summer School” in the next issue. Scott D. Miller, MD, is the Medical Director of Robotic Surgery at Wellstar North Fulton Hospital. He is a urologist with Wellstar Urology in Roswell and has practiced in Atlanta for over 20 years. 2020 Partners in Health Sleep—The Best Medicine By Marianna Kovitch, DMD, FICOI

The COVID-19 pandemic is disrupting daily routines around the world. Now, more than ever, it is critical to get enough sleep to battle the challenges of working in new environments, being teachers, great role models, taking care of elderly parents and extended family, and feeling like we are in a movie script which must end soon. Sleep can’t prevent you from getting sick, however, getting quality sleep has positive impacts on your entire body. Sleep deprivation has been shown to be associated with poor cognitive performance, depression, feelings of burnout, decreased insulin sensitivity, weight gain, and increased vulnerability to infection. Also, research shows that chronic sleep loss makes the flu vaccine less effective by reducing your body’s ability to respond. Cytokines are small proteins that act as receptors for the immune system. They are both produced and released during sleep. With increased quality sleep, more cytokines are available to target infection

and inflammation, effectively creating an immune response. With all efforts being taken to increase your immune system now more than ever, it is important to get a good night's sleep. When planning out your day with all the things you have to get done, plan on a schedule that will accommodate 7-9 hours of sleep, whether it means you need to go to sleep earlier or sleep in later. Dr. Marianna Kovitch is a dilpomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Kovitch completed her Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia after earning her Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Chemistry and recognition in research publication in biochemistry from Georgia State University. Dr. Kovitch has been an active board member of the Academy of General Dentistry since 2013 and has been a contributor to the development of dentistry excellence in Georgia.

2020 Partners in Health Epidural Steroid Injections for Spine Pain By Krystal W. Chambers, M.D.

Epidural steroid injection is a procedure where a corticosteroid medication is injected into the spinal canal. It is most often performed to treat conditions which result in pain, numbness or tingling in an arm or leg due to nerve compression in the spine. The medical term for this condition is “radiculopathy”, but it is more commonly known as “sciatica” when the symptoms involve the leg. Examples of conditions which can cause such symptoms include, but are not limited to, herniated discs in the cervical (neck) or lumbar (low back) spine, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine canal, and spondylolisthesis (misalignment between two vertebrae). Although commonly performed, an epidural steroid injection is not typically the first option when treating symptoms that are due to nerve compression in the spine. More often, after a careful history and physical exam are performed, more conservative options such as activity modification, anti-inflammatories, ergonomic corrections and physical therapy are recommended. If there is not adequate improvement with this approach, MRI examination of the spine is usually performed. A MRI provides a detailed image of the bones and soft tissues in the spine which helps confirm the specific level in the spine causing the problem. If the MRI results, physical exam findings and patient symptoms are all consistent, then epidural steroid injection is often considered. An epidural steroid injection is performed with the assistance of a special type of X-ray called fluoroscopy, which is a “live” X-ray. The use of fluoroscopy is an important tool when performing epidural steroid injections. Research has shown that without fluoroscopic guidance epidural steroid injections can be misplaced 30% of the time. When an epidural steroid injection is performed, local anesthetic is used to numb the skin and soft tissues to minimize discomfort during the procedure. A doctor will insert a thin needle through the anesthetized area and use the fluoroscope to get the correct needle placement, as determined by the previous MRI scan. Once correct placement has been confirmed, the cortisone/steroid medication is injected. This is followed by a short period of observation after the procedure before being discharged home. The benefits of the injection are usually noticed within 2-3 days of receiving the injection and improvement may continue over the next 7 days. The benefit could last for weeks to several months or longer as the response to injection is highly variable. In some instances the epidural injection is not helpful. This wide range

of responses is also reflected in the results of the many studies which attempted to evaluate the efficacy of epidural steroid injections. Most physicians who perform epidural injections will recommend no more than 3 injections within 12 months; however, there is not a clear consensus regarding this in the medical literature. An epidural steroid injection is generally viewed as a safe procedure. Potential risks associated with the procedure include, but are not limited to, infection, bleeding, nerve damage and dural puncture, which can result in a severe headache. Possible transient side effects related to the steroid medication include headache; restlessness; anxiety; flushing or redness in the face, neck and chest area; elevated blood sugar, particularly in those with diabetes; and increased pain. Epidural steroid injections should not be viewed as a “cure” for nerve pain, but rather a useful adjunct to the overall treatment plan. The steroid medication that is injected can bring about pain relief by diminishing the inflammation of the nerves that are being compressed in the spine. In turn, this allows for more effective participation in a rehabilitation program, decreased need for oral medications and improved overall quality of life. Krystal W. Chambers, M.D., received her medical degree from Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. She completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at The Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and her fellowship in Selective Spinal Injections and Non-operative Spine Care at Georgia Pain Physicians, P.C., in Marietta, Georgia. Dr. Chambers is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Additionally, she is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Physiatric Association of Spine, Sports and Occupational Medicine. Dr. Chambers practices at the Resurgens St. Joseph’s/Sandy Springs location.

Ethan King Ethan King may have taken the long road to becoming a successful business owner, but he is forever grateful to the mentors who took him under their wing. Now 42, the founder of Zeus’ Closet is eager to pass along his hard-won wisdom to other entrepreneurs.

Cover Award Winner

What person, thing, or event has influenced your life most? When I was in college I made some bad decisions. After being suspended for a semester, I eventually graduated with an Art degree. I had a criminal record and trouble finding a job, so I worked small gigs to make ends meet. One night, on my way to a club gig, I was carjacked at gunpoint. I truly thought the robber was going to kill me. When I heard him drive off with all of my belongings, I vowed that night to turn my life around.

Honestly what impressed me the most about [Ethan] was his realness, humility and vulnerability about coming out of the rubble of some hard places... taking ownership, turning it around and inspiring others to do the same.

—Lisa Washington, 2017 Over 40 & Fab! Cover Winner and 2020 Advisory Panelist What is your favorite way to give back to your community? I am extremely passionate about helping entrepreneurs grow. I often speak to students and entrepreneur peer groups like Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO). I’m former President of the Atlanta chapter, and I also serve in regional and global leadership roles. I find it extremely rewarding because it changes people’s lives, encourages growth and enables them to provide more jobs in their communities.

What inspired you to do this particular kind of charity work? I was an Art major with no formal business training. EO gave me the tools I needed to scale up my business. Throughout the years, other entrepreneurs took me under their wing and mentored me. I serve to be that same type of resource to other young entrepreneurs like me, particularly in creative industries, who may not have an MBA or come from a wealthy family. What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishments? I have two. Raising two beautiful, intelligent children. Then, the time I was handed a business award on stage by the same college president who had suspended me from school a decade earlier. The irony of that moment signified to me that I had come full circle.

Nova Kopp

Advisory Panel Award

Fostering personal growth and development in other women is what Nova Kopp is all about. At 54, this inspiring life coach and Director of Training for AT&T believes that continuous learning and growth are the key to becoming your best self.

What do you love most about being over 40? With age comes wisdom, self-confidence, patience and resilience. Age truly is just a number, but every year I age, I grow and learn. I’ve gained a lot of life experiences worth celebrating. My message is that it is never too late to become your best self in any area of your life. I believe in always delivering your best self and I am passionate about helping people improve their personal situation, whether it be with their career, relationships, health, finances or spiritual growth. What piece of wisdom/advice would you give to women and men in their 20s-30s? • Spiritual – God first! Seek Him in all you do, be a servant leader and remember the golden rule! • Physical – You only have one body. It is a temple, take care of it! • Mental – Never stop learning! When growth stops, decay begins. • Financial – Be a good steward of your finances. Save, save, save!

What is your favorite way to give back to your community? As Transcontinental® Ms. Universe 2019, I can continue my work as a philanthropist and an ambassador for victims of domestic violence. I work to increase education and funding through Hillside Atlanta, which spreads awareness about the needs of children affected by mental illness, trauma, abuse and neglect. As a domestic violence survivor, I share my personal story and knowledge of overcoming abuse. As an advocate for women and children dealing with domestic violence, I provide training and tools to individuals as they begin their emotional healing and lives abuse-free. Also, I am a national spokeswoman for The Pledge Campaign, a domestic violence awareness campaign with a focus on preventing violence toward women, children, men and animals. This includes helping to raise over $2.1 million for foster care and domestic violence. The money raised was critical to helping organizations reach more families.

What person, thing, or event has influenced your life most? My grandma. She led me to the Lord. That has not only changed my life, but the lives of my children and grandchildren.

What impact do you hope to leave on the world? I hope to not only leave a positive impact, but more importantly, I hope my children and their children continue this legacy of service I have started with serving our communities, standing up for important causes and being kind to others.

Michele Lee Stumpe Animal lover and humanitarian don’t begin to describe Michele Stumpe, 52, who has put decades into passion projects that serve our local community as well as wildlife and impoverished communities in Africa. An accomplished attorney, she also does pro bono work for multiple charities. What impact do you hope to leave on the world? The legacy of having created a change in the way non-profits do business, where they work together to resolve global humanitarian and environmental issues by empowering children, families and communities.

GiveBack Award

What person, thing, or event has influenced your life most? I’d applied to be a zoo volunteer when I was 12. Knowing they gave first claim to assignments based on final exam scores, I studied every night to snag the job atop EVERYONE’s list: working with the baby animals. I got the 2nd highest score. When the “older” woman with the top score was asked for her job preference, she gazed at me with a slight smile and calmly proclaimed, “I believe I’ll take the...TRAIN.” I was so shocked and excited by her RIDICULOUS choice that I barely noticed her wink at me before she sat down. What is your favorite way to give back to your community? I’m the co-founder/Board Chair of Children of Conservation. We provide scholarships for children of wildlife sanctuary workers in Africa and also engage in community empowerment projects that address conservation issues and the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. I’m also the Board Chair for PASA, an alliance of African wildlife sanctuaries and a Board Trustee for the Ngamba Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Uganda. I’ve served as a founding board member of The Giving Kitchen and Staplehouse since their inception and I’ve been on the Board or Legal Advisory Committee for Camp Twin Lakes for over 20 years. During the COVID crisis, I’ve spent all my legal time providing pro bono services to the hospitality industry.

What is your most embarrassing moment? In my final year of law school, I was selected to interview a key witness. I proudly took my suit to the dry cleaners, telling them exactly WHY I needed it. The next day, I confidently strode into the interview and nailed it! I was sure I’d made a great impression on my colleague and later commented on how much information I’d drawn out of the witness. That’s when she said, “Yeah, I think he was hypnotized by the light bouncing off the tin foil you forgot to remove from your suit buttons.” The next day, the whole office had tin foil on their buttons. I got a strong dose of humility and a lasting reminder not to ever get too big for my britches (or my buttons).

Rhiannon Tzimenatos Rhiannon Tzimenatos is a survivor. At 41, she has gone through both a toxic marriage and an addiction to alcohol. Rather than hiding her struggles, this amazing mother wears them proudly to show others what it is possible to overcome. What impact do you hope to leave on the world? I want to be known as the woman that helped to make sobriety acceptable in Atlanta. There are so many people struggling with alcohol and they are afraid to say anything about it for fear of judgement and fear that their life will not be as fun. I want to normalize and glamorize sobriety. What person, thing, or event has influenced your life most? Leaving an unhealthy marriage and beating a secret “addiction” to alcohol on my own. I found out who I really was during those dark days and I found out what I was capable of. Had those horrible events not taken place, I absolutely wouldn’t be where I am today. I am thankful for my struggles. What is your favorite way to give back to your community? I help with the Doctors Against Hunger Charity Golf Tournament benefiting the Atlanta Community Food Bank and I am on the board to start up a recovery outreach organization in Canton, Georgia, where I live. I want to help people beat addiction and see someone being successful sans booze, so I run a sobriety group on Facebook and Instagram called Purposely Sober. Who are the experts/professionals who help you be your best self? I am my best because of my chiropractor fiancé, Dan Turner, at DT Chiropractic. I also credit Josh Keenum and my gym at Onelife in Holly Springs. My hairdresser, Guillermo Silva, at Dyer & Posta Salon in Kennesaw is amazing and for my skincare I go to Judith McKernan at A New You in Woodstock and Mary Mobley at OVME in East Cobb.

What is your favorite way to work out? D A N C I N G and lifting weights! Dancing is my passion. I have my certification to teach Zumba, it was a bucket list item for me. I love all things dance-related like going to Les Mills classes and doing Sh’Bam and Body Jam. And I love to build muscle and I love having a toned, strong body at 41. What inspires you to get up every morning? My children. I have a 21-year-old, gorgeous and brilliant daughter named Madelyn and I have a sweet, athletic, hard-working son named Adam. Plus, I have 3 bonus sons named Elijah, Jonah and Sean. I bust my butt daily for them. I am putting my kids through college on my own. That is something I pride myself on. I want them to be proud of their mom.

Kim Cooper Kim Cooper’s life forever changed when her eldest daughter, Taylor, was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer at 4 years old. Thanks to the outpouring of support for her own daughter’s treatment, this 48-year-old mother of two has made it her life’s mission to help other children. What do you love most about being over 40? I love that with age truly comes wisdom and confidence, and not the kind that you learn in books. Having gone through many of life’s changes, both good and bad, has given me a sense of grace that I never allowed myself in my earlier years. It has also given me a deeper appreciation and different perspective on the simple things in everyday life. What do you consider to be your best accomplishment? My children are my best accomplishment. After having my oldest daughter, Taylor, and dealing with her cancer diagnosis, I had multiple failed pregnancies. After extensive infertility testing and multiple surgeries, by the grace of God I had my youngest daughter, Ella. They are my heart and soul. My “miracle” accomplishment, however, is that I reunited our family after being divorced from their dad for 4 years. What is your favorite way to give back to your community? It initially started with the Make A Wish foundation after my daughter was granted a wish in 2006. This led me to the founding of Stars and Cigars, an annual community event with the goal of granting another child’s wish every year. Since 2005, myself and a team of dedicated volunteers have been able to grant 25 children’s wishes in Georgia. I also serve as a Wish granter and mentor for other Wish families, and co-founded Fashion for a Cure to benefit CURE Childhood Cancer. I currently serve as President of the Board and Co-Program Director at Children Helping Children, I’ve been able to mentor and guide our junior board to empower and nurture their young philanthropic efforts. Their service projects benefit local Atlanta children facing adversity either transitioning through shelters, or battling mental or physical illnesses.

Where do you go for “me” time? Massages, meditation and shopping are always great for me time. It really depends on what mood I am in. Who are the experts/professionals who help you be your best self? My hairstylist, Shannon Silva at Dyer & Posta; my favorite skincare line is from B’Tyli Wellness and Beauty Co. which can be found at Anderson Aesthetics (they also have amazing estheticians and injectors). For facial and spa treatments, Heather May at her newly opened spa, The Healthicians, in East Cobb.

David Aferiat Even while running two companies David Aferiat, 49, still finds time to teach his children the power of change through activism, charity and an indomitable attitude. He also enjoys fine wine and supporting fellow business owners through the Entrepreneurs' Organization. What is something you learned about yourself during quarantine? Changing the world starts locally. Here’s a winning formula for change that my family participated in: peaceful protests for #BLM/George Floyd + writing letters and signing the petition to GA legislators regarding passing a Hate Crimes Act = seeing GA become the 46th state to finally do so! What is the best piece of parenting advice you ever received? Give children context and meaning to their lives with a compass of values in which to make decisions and to serve something greater than their social media profile. Negotiate and enforce rules on the backs of whatever is coveted the most: from beanie boos to smartphones. What is your favorite way to give back to your community? AVID Vines donates 1% of its net income to The Giving Kitchen, helping those in the food service industry with the financial burden of unexpected medical expenses. My children and I support entrepreneurship in other countries by allocating dollars to unbanked owners and their projects, start-ups, and businesses via KIVA.org. I have served as the President of the French American Chamber of Commerce and continue to devote time to improving an important alliance between the two countries. I serve in volunteer leadership roles within the Atlanta Chapter of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization.

What is your most embarrassing moment? In my youth I was invited to a friend’s house for dinner with their parents once. I added ketchup to corn and several of the family got up and left the table. I haven’t put ketchup on my corn since.

Su Longman Focused, determined, goal-getter—these are all words to describe Su Longman. With a heart of gold at the golden age of 60, this serial entrepreneur is dedicated not only to herself and her business, but to speaking out for those without a voice. What do you think has contributed most to your success in life? Being a first generation Korean-American immigrant with the combined strength and mentalities of both countries has been the most profound contributing factor to my success in life. America is like a blank canvas to me on which I have been able to draw up my aspirations and dreams, and my inherent work ethic enabled me to realize the full picture on that canvas. How has your perception of this age changed since you were younger? Did your parents look and act at 40 the way you do? I am not as old as I thought I would be at this age, haha. Fortunately, both of my parents always had enviable health and vitality, which I am glad I inherited. My mother still runs around in 4” high-heels and dresses to the nines in her Chanel with beautifully done make-up. Come to think of it, I do not think I have ever seen my mother without her being completely put together. What is your favorite way to give back to your community? I have chaired several charity fundraisers such as Meals on Wheels for Senior Citizens, the Ballet Ball, NBAF+Fashion and nsoro Gala. In addition, I actively participate in events for Humane Society and make donations to numerous organizations such as the High Museum, the Opera Ball, the Swan House Ball, Bow-Wow Brunch, Wounded Warriors, Project Open Hand and CHOA. In May, I also bought 500 meals for our front-line workers from Heirloom BBQ to show them our appreciation. What is your favorite quote? If A is a success in life, then A=X+Y+Z…, X is work, Y is play, and Z is keeping your mouth shut. I am still working on the Y and the Z.

Name something on your bucket list. It is funny how I do not have a bucket list; I have been fortunate to live the life I want to live, go to places I want to go to and somehow make the world fit me rather than me trying to fit into the world. I guess if I must state something on my bucket list, it would be that I will have no regrets at the end of the day. I want to be able to say, “I lived hard, I worked hard, and I loved hard!” How would your friends and family describe you? Fearless, strong, independent, loyal, outspoken and stubborn.

Ivory Shields Renaissance woman Ivory Shields is an actress, model, speaker and spiritual healer. After discovering the power to heal from past trauma within herself, this 41-year-old decided to use her gifts and experience to help others on their journey of healing. What is something you learned about yourself during quarantine? That I’m a bit of a workaholic. I have had to learn to create balance in my life, by incorporating some fun stuff into my schedule. What is the one thing you’ve learned to appreciate that you didn’t when you were younger? Being a melanated woman! I was a kid who grew up in an era where black excellence wasn’t shown in mainstream media. We had The Cosby Show and A Different World, but that was about it. The media primarily showed us all of the images and stories related to gang violence and the crack epidemic in black communities. Also, the rich and positive history of melanated people wasn’t something really talked about in my home. What do you love most about Atlanta? This is my home. I love how this city is so rich with culture and history! Also, my family’s roots are here. My great-grandfather was one of the first black contractors to get a city contract. He helped to build many prominent buildings in this city, including the first Coca-Cola building and Grady Memorial Hospital. What do you consider to be your best accomplishment? Being able to forgive those who hurt me. It freed me. What is your favorite way to give back to your community? I really enjoy connecting with young people and children, and teaching them about the power of self-awareness and meditation.

Who are the experts/professionals who help you be your best self? I have several spiritual Sistas who I fully lean on to help me be my best self. One of my besties, Starr Eberhart, is a realtor here in Atlanta and we’ve known each other for almost 30 years. She’s someone I talk to about everything and we hold each other accountable. Also, my friend Shehawnee Prescod, of EarthAngel PR, is someone I lean on for helping me to be the best version of myself.

Parish Tofighian Hattub Spiritual Life Coach, Parish Tofighian Hattub, 48, believes in living a life of kindness, mindfulness and service to others. These guiding principles, instilled in her by her parents, have led her through good times and bad, and inspired her to open her own business, Spiritually Crafted. What inspires you to get up every morning? I feel inspired to get up every day and pour love and kindness into the world. I believe that when we live our Dharma, we live our highest and best life. Living my life with purpose embodies, service, humility, love, gratitude and kindness. I believe the world is one country and mankind its citizens. I embrace the “ONENESS” of our humanity. What do you consider to be your best accomplishment? Having the courage to leave two toxic marriages with two young children. Without my courage, I would not be where I am today. Standing in my truth, knowing my self-worth and instilling these values in my children. What is your favorite way to give back to the community? I founded the International Interfaith Women’s Group over 15 years ago. It started it with 8 women and grew to 1200 women from around the world. This group is about women’s empowerment, oneness, community and service. One of the organizations so close to my heart is Must Ministries Homeless Shelter, I’ve organized lunches there the past 12 years. I have served for foster kids groups, meals for kids in summer, domestic violence organizations, sex trafficking organizations and hosted foreign exchange students. I have also participated in fundraisers for St. Jude’s, local schools, Drake House and outreach for refugee communities. My family volunteered our home for the Roswell Holiday Home Tour to raise money for college funds. What do you think has contributed most to your success in life? Living from a place of inspiration, mindfulness and an open heart has led me to experiencing thousands of magical moments in my life and manifesting my dreams. There are no coincidences. Every single moment is divinely placed in our life for our personal growth. I honor and respect all of my life lessons.

What person, thing, or event has influenced your life most? My parents have been my biggest influences in my life. They had to flee their country of Iran in the ‘70s, fleeing religious persecution, and started over in a new land with nothing. This showed me that anything is possible if you have faith, hope and family. They have taught me about the oneness of humanity from childhood and to use the principles of the Bahai Faith in every aspect of life. My parents instilled a thirst for spirituality in my life.

Pitter Kalpak-Goughnour Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and photographer Pitter Kalpak-Goughnour sees it in everyone. At 50 years young, this single mother often donates her photography services to charitable causes. What impact do you hope to leave on the world? To show people how beautiful they are no matter what. I would hope that I would leave behind a legacy of laughter, joy and confidence. What person, thing, or event has influenced your life most? WOW this is hard, as I have many influential people in my life. However, my grandfather was one of the most influential. He gave me many of my first life experiences such as driving without a license (where I hit a mailbox), he helped me learn how to drive a stick shift, he took my brother and I across the USA for 30 days, he showed me what the world had to offer at a young age. You can’t put a value on that. What is your favorite way to work out? I do not go to the gym. However, my camera weighs about 15lbs and that is a good enough workout for me. I also love riding my bike whenever I can and doing other fun outdoor activities. What is your favorite way to give back to your community? I am especially fond of the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance, as they were an integral part in helping one of my closest friends, who was diagnosed with late-stage 4 ovarian cancer. She was a fighter and appreciative of the support the team provided to her when we engaged with them to connect with other women who were survivors. She lived 1.5 years after being diagnosed. I remain connected with Doug Barron and this association, because of their support for so many women going through such a life-changing diagnosis. I have given much of my services, time and support to many organizations throughout the years including: Open Hands, CHOA, Atlanta Ballet, Greene County Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Greene, Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies, Works of HeART and First Call Pregnancy Centers. What is your most embarrassing moment? When I was a junior in high school, my world history teacher, Coach, was discussing how we would need a visa to travel to certain countries. You can imagine my excitement to grab my wallet and whip out my dad’s Visa with my name on it. I raised it high and proud, waving it in the air, shouting, “I got one, I have one right here!”, thinking I was the coolest kid in class. Coach’s response, while shaking his head with laughter, “Kalpak, uh NOT that kind of VISA.”

Elise Roth Tedeschi Nothing can stop Elise Roth Tedeschi, not even cancer. After battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer, this 51-year-old former Director of Marketing for the Buckhead Life Restaurant Group knows that every day is a gift and treats it as such.

Inspiration Award

What inspires you to get up every morning? That’s easy, I AM ALIVE! Over 8 years ago I was given less than 9 months to live. I never imagined that I would ever be faced with cancer, let alone pancreatic cancer. I had a 1% chance that I would survive for more than five years. I was given a miracle and I am incredibly grateful every single day that I am here.

What is your favorite quote? For me it is really a bible verse that I lived by when I was going through cancer, Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." What person, thing, or event has influenced your life most? My parents. My mom taught me to always stand up for what is right. She was the first in the state of Florida to run a successful recall of two city council members. My dad taught me how to be solution-oriented, he was so even-keeled. What is your favorite way to give back to your community? As the co-chair of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (Atlanta affiliate), I get to fight for my fellow warriors that no longer have a voice. In 2013, I spoke at the Atlanta Purple Stride 5K and again in 2014. PanCAN is an amazing organization. They help those going through pancreatic cancer with so many free services like free molecular profiling of patient’s tumor (Know Your Tumor) and searching for clinical trials that a patient would qualify for. Last year, my then 13-year-old son and I went to Washington D.C. to advocate for more funding. There was not a dry eye in the room when my son said, “This is my mom, she was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer when I was 6-years-old. If the doctors were right, she would not have made it to my 7th birthday.” Hair and makeup by Bob Steele Salon.

What do you love most about yourself? I love that there are no strangers and I love that I can fix just about anything! I have fixed my furnace, my dishwasher, changed the glass on an iPad, and even fixed my old SUV’s AC! Who are the experts/professionals who help you be your best self? Hair and makeup, Nyssa Green of The Green Room Agency. Hair color & cut by Elli Brown of Plum Salon. Amanda Leesburg of Leesburg PR.

Patrick Lee A family man through and through, Patrick Lee, 45, knows what his priorities in life are. Being adopted at 5, he understands how important family and support are to young children and spends his time supporting them how he can. What do you consider to be your best accomplishment? To this day my best accomplishment has been raising a beautiful, intelligent, and loving 14-year-old daughter. I’ve won numerous awards and achieved many things, but being the #1 Daddy brings me so much pride and joy. What impact do you hope to leave on the world? To have been a positive influence on the lives of many, whether large or small. We sometimes look for the big impact in which people remember and acknowledge, but small impacts on people’s lives are just as important. A simple smile, hello, meal, conversation, encouragement, advice or even a wave could mean the world to someone and influence the direction in their life. What is the best piece of parenting advice you ever received? It isn’t about you anymore. What person, thing, or event has influenced your life most? I was adopted at the age of 5 years old and accepted into a loving family that gave me exposure, opportunity and love. The foundation they provided and instilled in me continue to be a major part in how I live my life. What is your favorite way to give back to your community? I’ve learned over the years that I have a passion to work with our youth and to provide support for their development. I enjoy speaking at career days for local schools, volunteering with organizations such as Hands On Atlanta and Must Ministries, coaching girl’s youth basketball, and recently keynoted the Crabapple Middle School MLK Humanitarian of the Year program.

Who are the experts/professionals who help you be your best self? I have a large network of people that care about me as a person and want what’s best for me. My wife and daughter keep me grounded, and I am blessed to have so many people that have played a part and continue to play a part in my overall success and being my best self. I couldn’t be who I am today without all of them.

Name something on your bucket list. Skydiving! My daughter made me ‘pinky promise’ that I would take her skydiving when I turn 50. She was only 9 years old when we promised to do it together, but a promise is a promise and we’ll be jumping out of a plane in 4 years.

Where is your favorite place in Atlanta? I love all sports and any Atlanta sports venue will do!

Jason Regis, D.C. As a health practitioner, Jason Regis, D.C. keeps health and wellness at the top of his list. When he’s not swimming laps or spending time on his yoga mat, this 42-year-old chiropractor is helping patients at his Marietta practice, Transformation Wellness Team. What do you think has contributed most to your success in life? I attribute my strong work ethic, attention to detail and diligence to a Caribbean family upbringing. My dad was the youngest of 14 children in Trinidad. They all saved up and sent him to medical school. I spent summers in the Bahamas with my mother’s family. What is your favorite way to give back to your community? My favorite way to give back is to help the youth, whether it be through the summer book program at the YMCA; the Big Brother program through my Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, where I mentored kids in prison or Food For The Poor, where they empower people in ways that they learn to help themselves. What inspired you to do this particular kind of charity work? My mother is a pediatrician and would always invite kids with autism and Down syndrome to our house. I’m embarrassed that I used to be a little resentful, but as I matured, realized that it is a thin line and “but for the grace” I could be the same. The visit to my house was a bright spot for them and I am proud to create light wherever I can. What is your favorite way to work out? My favorite way to work out is between yoga and swimming. Both are low impact and exercise you can do for the rest of your life. What is your favorite getaway? Abaco/Exuma in the Bahamas. These small islands are less populated and don’t have the hustle and bustle of Nassau. Groceries and the beach are all I need for 4 days!

Who are the experts/professionals who help you be your best self? Professionals I emulate are the ones that stick to their principles and goals, even when people thought they were crazy: Richard Branson, Elon Musk, Dr. Sid Williams (founder of Life University), Laina Orlando - Life Coach. Mentors: Dr. Keith Rau, Dr. Marni Capes, Dr. Deborah Roche, Dr. Michael Hatrak, Dr. Kevin Flythe, Dr. Sean McIntyre, Dr. Carl Bremer and Dr. Gwendolyn Tutt. What piece of wisdom/advice would you give to women and men in their 20s-30s? I tell people in their 20s and 30s to look at their health and the right choices like an investment or coins you put in the piggy bank. The biggest mistake is not stretching enough. I recommend a minimum 15 minutes after warm-up for every hour of exercise.

Christiane Wyckoff Every part of Christiane Wyckoff’s being is dedicated to educating children, both in and out of the classroom. At 60, this 5th grade teacher imparts to her students the importance of charity and compassion through multiple volunteer initiatives. What impact do you hope to leave on the world? I consider myself a farmer … I plant positive loving seeds in the lives of others, many of which I will never see the beauty of the full bloom. What do you love most about Atlanta? I love Atlanta because I met my wonderful husband, Kurt, here and raised our three children, Spencer, Carden, and Virginia. Family is everything to me! What is your favorite way to give back to your community? I enjoy teaching my students the importance of being good citizens, leaders and stewards through several means. I believe that influencing and modeling these tenets to our future generations is vital to the success of our communities and nation and therefore, some of my favorite ways to give back are: • Clark’s Christmas Kids • Project Mail Call • Book Drive • Atlanta Walk & Roll for FSHD Muscular Dystrophy • Altar Guild – Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church Name something on your bucket list? One thing on my bucket list is to climb and piggyback my daughter, Carden, who has FSHD (muscular dystrophy) up Mt. Kilimanjaro. What is your favorite book? That’s hard! I have a few … The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, Love You Forever by Robert Munsch, Child of the Forest by Jack Grossman, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett and anything by Dr. Seuss.

On a personal level, my close circle of lifelong female friends, who are priceless, is another critical key to helping me be my best self.

Shelby Perkins Triick Shelby Triick is one of those people who sees what she wants and runs after it. Inspired by a life of travel and grateful for the opportunities it exposed, this 45 year-old is the epitome of a doer. What person, thing, or event has influenced your life most? Working and living in Zagreb, Croatia during the Balkan War. It gave me an opportunity to work with people from all different cultures. It allowed me to see suffering and triumph as I have never seen it before or since. What is your favorite way to give back to your community? My favorite way to give back to my community is through being involved. I was on a local Senior Services Board, because I think it’s important to be a voice for seniors. I served on the Doraville Downtown Development Authority, because I believe in thoughtful infrastructure planning and finding a way forward. I saw a need in the community after my father passed away for life saving blood and began hosting yearly blood drives. I participated in the White House’s Summit for Women because I believe it is my duty to be a voice for women—especially younger women. What inspired you to do this particular kind of charity work? I’ve been inspired by my travels to foreign countries, by loss and by abundance. I am often overwhelmed by the magnitude of what is needed. I am always listening for ways to get involved. If something “speaks” to me, I look for ways to jump in. Sometimes it is small and sometimes it is large. I admire doers. I strive to be a doer. “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." - Theodore Roosevelt Name something on your bucket list? I’d love to whitewater raft the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, visit Patagonia, Alaska and Hawaii. Basically, travel is my bucket list! Who are the experts/professionals who help you be your best self? My hair stylist, Michelle Logan, with Bob Steele Salon keeps my hair healthy. Melissa Federico with Spa Sydell is there for me if I have any skincare concerns. My Peloton and Tonal communities are always there to help support me in my fitness journey.

How do you maintain the balance between self-care, family, and work responsibilities, and giving back? I don’t believe in balance. I embrace the imbalance of it all! At different times in a week, month or year—family, self-care, work or giving back will take different amounts of effort, focus and time. I will say that I believe it is important to prioritize your relationships and to be intentional about time with those you love.

Lynn Bridges McCray Combining environmental concerns and giving back to those in need is what total health advocate and environmentalist Lynn Bridges McCray does best. Through her work with EcoSneakers.ORG and Women’s Health Consortium, this 54-year-old is putting shoes on feet and making soles happy! What is something you learned about yourself during quarantine? I love the quiet that happens when it’s just you in the house. What is the best piece of parenting advice you ever received? Take 15 minutes with (each of) your children at bedtime with the light turned down and let them talk about their day. What do you consider to be your best accomplishment? So far, my sons! Best Self Atlanta Over 40 and Fabulous! Super Six is a close second! What is your favorite healthy meal? Glazed salmon and black rice/purple potatoes with red cabbage. What is your favorite way to give back to your community? I work with EcoSneakers.ORG, traveling the country to collect and donate sneakers to children and families in need around the Southeast. We collaborate with Climate Reality to get the message out about the impact of keeping sneakers out of landfills. Also with my organization, Women’s Health Consortium, I work with women to help regain confidence through balance exercises, knife-throwing and movement through music (mostly stroke victims). What inspired you to do this particular kind of charity work? Bobby Johnson, who is the ‘official’ Founder of Eco Sneakers, inspired me with his work ethic, his passion and his determination to share his mission of environmental responsibility through repurposing sneakers with the world. He inspired me to expand the Eco Sneakers mission to kids in schools, and communities in cities all over the Southeast. I was hooked the first time I went to collect sneakers at a Mud Run (Tough Mudder). The people supported each other to complete the race! They all thanked me for taking their almost new, but very muddy, sneakers after the race to be cleaned and reused, as opposed to just throwing them away.

Who are the experts/professionals who help you be your best self? • Eyetopia Med Spa • Alldia Edwards/Kayla Stutson: My Textures Salon • Tina/Old Man/Susan: Nail Season II • And last but not least, dresses from Designs by Sylvia.

tanley, a beloved middle school teacher, developed a grumpy look as he aged. When he came to The Maloney Center for Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Brian Maloney could see that Stanley was filled with warmth and kindness in his heart. Stanley’s students, however, were always faced with his furrowed brow and unwelcoming appearance.

Dr. Maloney performed a facelift, fat transfer and eyelid surgery that transformed his life. “Post operatively, you could see that sparkle come back in his eyes. It was such a moving experience that Stanley’s school principal invited me to their Career Day. I was able to witness the powerful transition of how Stanley was regarded by his students firsthand. It was truly a life-changing day for me,” recalled Dr. Maloney. Stanley’s inspiring story was even featured on the Discovery Health Channel.

An internationally recognized leader in his field, Dr. Maloney approaches each patient with genuine compassion and artistry, treating a patient population that often desires a more conservative, natural look. Younger patients may seek minimal incision Facial Liposuction to help define a full neck or jawline. As patients mature, excess skin forms jowls or loose neck tissue; a Facelift permanently removes excess tissue, restoring a youthful neckline.

BEFORE AFTER DR. MALONEY PERFORMED A FACELIFT, FAT TRANSFER, AND EYELID SURGERY THAT TRANSFORMED STANLEY'S LIFE.

A Facial Fat Transfer is generally a long-term filler for most patients. Using the patient’s own fat, hollow areas and lines of the face are softened. Computer imaging allows potential Rhinoplasty patients to see the possibilities.

“After carefully listening to my patient’s concerns, my goal is to share the spectrum of treatment options which can help achieve their goal,” Dr. Maloney explained. “When patients are fully educated, they will be equipped to make the best decisions regarding their cosmetic procedures.” The content for this article is brought to you by the Maloney Center for Facial Plastic Surgery.

n a new kind of normal, taking care of ourselves has never been more top of mind, so as society takes steps to keep themselves safe, Bob Steele Salon takes action to match that priority.

From curbside sanitizing stations, masks and temperature checks to the way stylists prep and execute services, they’ve adopted numerous tactics to stay laser-focused on each client’s well-being.

The brand also installed hospital-grade microbial air purifying systems to filter the cleanest air possible throughout its five locations. The system works by turning humidity and oxygen in the air into dry hydrogen peroxide that reduces contaminants floating around, such as viruses, bacteria and mold, as well as reducing odors and insects. With new safety procedures in place, clients can lean into what they’ve always trusted about their visits to Bob Steele Salon—expert consultations and service. Stylist Jen Wehrheim attests, nodding to a favorite client who came to her for an emergency color fix. “She didn’t feel pretty and hoped I could fix it by [her daughter’s wedding],” said Wehrheim. “She knew it would be a process and wasn’t expecting much to change the first time; but when I turned her around, she broke down in tears. She felt beautiful again and couldn’t believe what I had done in just one appointment.” She became a client for life, exemplifying the biggest reason Wehrheim loves her job. Fun, exciting new hair trends are another. Color Hazing saves time with an ammonia-free way to kick up color without the commitment. Feather extensions offer subtle boho-style accessories. Babylights provide radiant “baby” blonde highlights that look natural and youthful. The innovative Balayage technique delivers that coveted sun-kissed color from childhood summers with less noticeable regrowth lines. Your new normal just may be your best look yet.

Technology helps with that. New advancements lift and tighten skin and sculpt faces, necks and bodies. Dr. Yellin does extensive research to find the treatments that deliver real results, such as Profound® RF, which uses microneedle delivery of radiofrequency energy to stimulate elastin production, tightening skin and enabling improved neck and jawline contours, and the long-lasting, artistically demanding Injecta-Lift™ procedure that can balance left-right facial symmetry and create a more idealized facial shape, making the face appear more youthful and beautiful. Today, self-improvement is more accessible than ever before. It’s also more effective, safer, less invasive and requires less downtime for recovery. In combination with scientifically proven skin care, patients can often look great without major surgery.

BEFORE

Feeling Great About Your Face “For many people, as their appearance noticeably changes due to the march of time or if there’s dissatisfaction with a particular facial feature, it can be emotionally difficult and chip away at their self-esteem,” says Dr. Yellin. BEFORE AFTER “The confidence we have in our appearance matters. I am BEFORE AND 2 YEARS AFTER THE INJECTA-LIFT PROCEDURE BY DR. YELLIN in the business of wellness, and one’s appearance is a vital component to that sense of well-being. Maintaining a positive outlook, especially during these trying times, is critical.” Dr. Yellin notes that getting an early start with treatments such as Botox, fillers and skincare will lead to fewer lines and issues to deal with in the long run, thus keeping us looking fabulous longer. “Properly reshaping faces with injectable fillers is an art form,” he says. “Fillers should always create an appearance that looks beautiful, natural and undetectable.” Creating a natural look is a hallmark of Dr. Yellin’s practice. “Patients always tell me that they love how people comment that they look beautiful, but can’t figure out what was done,” he says. “They ask them, did you change your hairstyle? Come back from a vacation? They just can’t figure it out.”

“F

or more than four decades, I’ve maintained the way my body looks, the way my face looks, but my hair was the one thing that I wasn’t happy with,” says Vince Cellini, a celebrity sportscaster who underwent hair restoration surgery at Anderson Center for Hair last year. “Letting it turn silver was one thing— letting it fall out was another.” It wasn’t simply a vanity issue for Cellini—it was business. Because of his career on television, he believed his hair loss had an impact on the persona he presented to the public. In his field, that is a pretty big deal. “Anything that detracts from me focusing on my job and what I have to do to deliver information and highlights, scores and news was going to be a detriment.” He took the leap, choosing Anderson because it was the place with the best reputation, the place he felt most comfortable and the place that listened to his concerns and worked alongside him on what he was looking for in terms of results.

As the first center in Georgia to offer the ARTAS Robotic Hair Restoration System, Anderson Center for Hair can bring their patients, like Cellini, dramatic results with this patented hair restoration technology. Using both the linear (grafts are taken from a thin strip of tissue at the back of the scalp) and FUE (individual grafts are taken from the back of the scalp, eliminating a linear scar) methods, treatment plans and results are customizable, realistic and life changing. “This was about achieving something that I wanted,” said Cellini. “I think it was the one thing about myself that I really wasn’t completely happy with. I couldn’t do anything about it. It was the one thing I couldn’t control. Anderson was the way I could get that control back, and have a look that I wanted to achieve.” And that’s a win. Ditch the Downtime

L

ife is busy—even if these days the calendar is mostly virtual. Taking care of your skin shouldn’t monopolize the little time you have to see friends and family.

Dr. Monte Slater and his team at Aesthetic Body Sculpture Clinic and Center for Anti-Aging resolve this via innovative skin rejuvenating treatments that deliver fantastic results with only one day of downtime. “I love making people feel better about themselves in a concrete, palpable way,” said Slater. “Handing them the mirror after [treatment], and [hearing them say], ‘Oh wow!’ is the most satisfying part of my job.”

A big wow-inducer is the brand-new Cool Peel Co2 Laser treatment that reduces lines and tightens skin. Similarly, the industry’s revamped Subnovi Plasma Pen can minimize even deeper lines. But, the best news is that combining either of these treatments with a new, minimally invasive technique called Vivace, which marries microneedling with radiofrequency energy to tighten skin and brighten its tone and texture, can obtain better and longer lasting results. Reading between those lines, Pico laser technology offers relief from other skin issues, like state-of-the-art tattoo removal, and reducing melasma and stubborn age spots.

Photography by Brian Reeves, Perfect Day Photos.

For au naturel skin enhancement seekers, Slater recommends hydrafacials which combine high quality serums and skin care products with advanced regenerative capabilities that incorporate natural stem cell stimulation to aid in remodeling the facial tissue. Of course, everything Slater offers comes with a disclaimer—“Sun, sun, sun, and did I mention the sun?” he says. “UV radiation is the leading cause of skin aging. Most of us overexposed ourselves when we were young and are now experiencing the consequences, but continued exposure will dramatically accelerate the skin’s negative response.” Simply put, celebrate in the shade!

Concourse goes above and beyond to provide accountability that inspires clients to reach beyond the walls of the gym. We love knowing we’ve made a difference in their lives, and not just a great workout. Trainers mix it up, from weights to resistance bands, or power moves and gliders, individualized for each client. The variety and fun makes it easy to commit and stay consistent.

Q. Concourse has a high retention rate among members… What’s your secret? In the fitness world, new gadgets, programs and classes come out every day, but we value vetting new products and programs before implementing them, so that we know they work and can be customized toward our clients. It translates to results, and results keep clients coming back. The content for this article is brought to you by Concourse Athletic Club.

Tom Sullivan: Bringing the Joy hen popular emcee and TV personality Tom Sullivan left the radio industry after 30 years it was to pursue his passion for connecting with people in person. This platform lets him share his positive energy and encourage others from the stage, and he often surprises his TV followers with his authenticity off the screen. But how does a personable, big events guru function in the time of COVID? “COVID has been the biggest challenge for me as an emcee, because for sure that’s shut down most corporate events,” Sullivan says. “To combat that, I’ve started hosting events virtually, which I transitioned to very easily having worked in television for years.”

Navigating new paths and readjusting with positivity and determination is another facet of what he loves. In fact, it’s what has helped him see what matters most in life. From learning gratitude, patience and compassion through caring for his partner during his battle with cancer, to sharing good vibes (and big smiles) with clients and offering them a slice of hope in a world that’s pretty scary right now, he’s up for the challenge of bringing joy to others. “While I miss the energy of a room filled with thousands of people, my team [has been able to produce] events [so that we can connect with them] virtually,” he says. Finding success right now is a unique talent— one that he credits to God, and a personal verse, Psalm 37:4. “When I look out my window, I see the birds always find food and God always provides,” he says. “Having the ability to explore,

grow, learn, lead, follow, create, discover and enjoy life is what keeps me motivated. It isn’t about the money, but

rather doing something that nurtures your spirit – mind, body and soul.”

2020 OVER 40 & FABULOUS! ADVISORY BOARD: BODY PLASTIC SURGERY Dr. Alan N. Larsen, Owner, Buckhead Plastic Surgery

Unveiling Your Best Body r. Alan Larsen, surgeon at Buckhead Plastic Surgery, will be one of the first to tell you that, often, surgical options are much more than skin deep. In fact, after popular procedures such as Tummy Tuck, Liposuction, Body Lift, or Butt Lift, the results can actually be life changing. But more powerful than a renowned surgeon weighing in are the words from his actual patients—individuals who feel like they’ve gotten a new lease on life. Liposuction is one way Larsen helps patients address stubborn bulges as it sculpts and contours the proportional body shape you want. One patient says, “Dr. Larsen thoroughly explains the entire procedure and makes sure you fully understand and feel completely comfortable. He is super easy to talk to and his bedside manner is top-notch!”

“I couldn’t be happier with my Tummy Tuck!,” adds another patient, nodding to the procedure popular among moms hoping to gain their pre-baby midsection back.

Photography by Krys Alex Photography, LLC. Hair and makeup by The Green Room Agency.

“My outcome is better than I could have ever imagined,” she says. “The whole staff made me feel comfortable and answered any questions that I had. I am eight weeks post-op and I love my new body!” A Body Lift, commonly sought after by patients who’ve undergone massive weight loss, helps reduce excess skin and stretch marks for a more youthful body contour.

“I am 6 sizes smaller than what I was,” says one Body Lift patient. “Dr. Larsen did a wonderful job! He changed my life.” Lastly, Brazilian Butt Lift addresses the backside, using a combination of liposuction and fat grafting to help achieve a more full buttocks, resulting in a youthful, athletic looking body.

“Everything about my [Brazilian Butt Lift] experience from start to finish AFTER BEFORE was excellent,” says Larsen’s patient. “The TUMMY TUCK (ABDOMINOPLASTY) staff is so helpful and Dr. Larsen is so talented. I can’t say enough about how pleased I am with my results.” The content for this article is brought to you by Buckhead Plastic Surgery. Tonya Guillory, Class of 2019 Cover Winner

When I hit 40 I had a confidence and clarity that I had never known before. I am in the best shape of my life and it’s because I have learned how to truly take care of myself. Invest in whatever it is that fills your soul, for me that’s my daughter, friends, my faith and a career that drives me to new heights daily. Be the hardest worker in the room and success will follow you. Surround yourself with people that inspire you to be the best version of yourself, find your tribe.

Lynne McDonald, Class of 2018 Cover Winner As an independent artist it is important to plan my exhibits well in advance and my 2020 calendar was full! Then, everyone’s lives changed. Being Type 1 diabetic, it was important to cancel my entire itinerary and while gallery shows waned, I decided to embrace the situation and look for opportunities. I have opened channels for growth with real estate partners, targeted business professionals on LinkedIn and expanded my social media with virtual gallery shows. Each allows my art to bring joy and serve as inspiration for people who are spending more time at home.

Lisa Washington, Class of 2017 Cover Winner

It’s been exciting to be a part of the Best Self Atlanta Magazine’s Over 40 and Fabulous! family. The beautiful connections have inspired me to write my fourth book, focusing on living your best life in your 40s and the speaking tour has given me and my husband the opportunity to have our portraits hung in the Harriet Tubman Museum as African Americans with inspiring stories. This means so much to me, because it is a reminder of the legacy I can leave with my children and grandchildren.

Michelle Hodgson, Class of 2015 Cover Winner When the outer world feels completely out of control, true peace must come from my inner world. For me, there has been no better access to that world than through creating. Sacred tools like journals, paintbrushes and instruments have always helped me connect with the present moment and rest my mind to open my heart and soul fully. I feel so fortunate to have had this time to pause, let my creativity flow and to launch a new initiative with Children Helping Children called the LOVETRAIN, a creative philanthropic wellness center on wheels for children coming fall 2020.

Kim Vaughn, Class of 2013 Cover Winner As national spokesperson and former member of the Board of Directors, advocacy, leadership and fundraising for the Sjögren’s Foundation are near and dear to my heart. As a patient myself, I have volunteered over the past 25 years to increase awareness, educate the public and federal legislators, and raise money for a cure. At the past Sjögren’s Foundation National Patient Conference in Boston, my husband and I were presented with the Volunteer Leadership Award. Together, we spearhead the annual Atlanta fundraising efforts which have raised more than $300,000 over the past 12 years.

Terri Ellis-Ewing, Class of 2019 Inspiration Award I continue to be an advocate and board member for the Auditory Verbal Center in Atlanta, which helps children hear again and learn to speak for the first time by providing cochlear implants and/or hearing aids. It truly brings me joy, because I myself am hearing impaired and love to help change the lives of others. I also continue to take time for myself, especially during this pandemic, with lots of gardening, power walking, Pilates, meditation and cycling, which helps me stay fit and fabulous over 40!

Lisa Mohager, Class of 2018 Inspiration Award Having once been a 60 pounds overweight, bankrupt, single mom, I ended 2019 on a high! My dreams came true when I traveled China and was crowned Mrs. Successful Universe. The real blessing was making the trip with my daughter and creating once in a lifetime memories. There’s only one person who’s there from your first breath to your very last and that person is you. Whatever you are going through, take time to make your personal wellbeing a priority.

Tran Bui Smith, Class of 2017 Inspiration Award For 2020, I picked the word WORTH. COVID-19 definitely put that to the test. As someone who runs a production company, my work is face-to-face. The pandemic put my job at risk, but as a Vietnamese refugee who fled during the Fall of Saigon, I pride myself on being resilient. I turned to what I know and used those skills to offer clients a service they could use to keep their business present during quarantine. I’ve learned that worth is not just about the value you bring to others, but recognizing your self-worth and realizing your potential.

Eileen Rosencrants, Class of 2019, Top 10 I was truly humbled to be one of 2019’s Top Ten Finalists for Over 40 & Fabulous! Since then, I have made a career move to Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty. There have been many fun memories and a number of very painful losses of cherished family members and friends. Such losses remind us to always share how much we love someone and tell them how valuable they are to us. We never know if that will be our last opportunity. We must live every day to the fullest.

Michelle Falconer, Class of 2019, Top 10 Life has changed drastically for me since last year, when I made the top 10 of Over 40 & Fabulous! Five months ago I got a call that my younger sister had passed away from a seizure. Overnight I went from a mother of four to a mother of seven. Two days later, my father passed away. COVID-19 had all of us sheltering in place days later. I spent the remainder of the school year homeschooling kids ranging from 3rd grade to college sophomore. But I’m so thrilled that I have had this time in the house to pivot and get my house together.

Stella Ringer, Class of 2019, Top 10

Wow, what a year it’s been since Over 40 and Fabulous! 2019! There’s been local, national and global experiences that have shaped me professionally and personally. Since Over 40 and Fabulous!, I’ve moved to a new role leading marketing for two of Coca-Cola’s major strategic partners; celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary; become a board member of an awesome community outreach organization, Breakthrough Atlanta; seen my 20-yearold son become a role model for positive activism and was named a history shaker by Coca-Cola for my contributions to our business and giving back to the community.

Kristen Marotte, Class of 2019, Fab 5 You are as young as you feel. Allow your mindset to guide you rather than the numbers on your birth certificate. Staying active, both physically and mentally, will keep you feeling and looking young. As a fitness instructor, I focus on the FUN factor for the mind; and to keep the body functioning youthfully I emphasize strength, balance and flexibility. Don’t be intimidated by your age! I did my first full splits, backbend and headstand at age 48. Now I’m creating a platform to motivate people of all ages to stay healthy and fit.

My passion is empowering and inspiring women to live their best life with a healthy lifestyle as the foundation. With the uncertainty looming over us because of COVID-19, lots of women have been over drinking and overeating more than ever before and the result has been weight gain. I created a specific program called Stop Overeating - Lockdown Edition (SOLE) to help women stop overeating and reclaim their health. More than ever before it is so important to take care of our health, especially for us women that are over 40.

Leta Brooks, Class of 2019, Fab 5

Since being included in the Over 40 & Fabulous! contest and being blessed to make it into the Fab Five, I was asked to be a guest on a Business Radio X podcast to discuss all my entrepreneurial endeavors. The Status Life With Leta show was born and has taken off in ways I could never imagine. The purpose of Status Life With Leta is to use everything I’ve been through (and others with stories to tell) to share something that might hit home, give guidance or simply put a smile on your face.

Tannaz Modaresi, D.C., Class of 2019, Fab 5 Be true to yourself and do something you love. Cherish your family, your loved ones, and your faith. Surround yourself with real friends, successful people and get happy for their success. Take time to nourish the mind, the heart, the body and the soul. Lift up others. Give your life purpose by helping others in need. In my 40s I achieved multiple awards including America’s Best Chiropractors, Best Chiropractic Practice and Renaissance Women. I always give the best care to my patients and love to help people have a pain-free life.

Marquetta J. Bryan, Class of 2018, Top 10 I continue to serve the metropolitan Atlanta community in important ways and use my voice regularly to advocate for others. I am the Chairwoman of the Georgia Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society and was honored by Atlanta Magazine as a 2020 Women Making a Mark. I am still passionate about connecting women on issues impacting women and continue to do that through my Table 10 Brunch series.

Michele Thomas, Class of 2017, Top 10 In 2019, I became fabulous and 50! At the start of this chapter, I began mentoring an 8th grader at the Tuskegee Airmen Global Academy and I contributed to Tomorrow Belongs to Her, a collection of beautiful illustrations and inspiring stories by Dr. Veronique Diriker. I write the words for Makeda, a girl living with lupus, bringing her story to life by sharing my personal experiences with lupus. The key to living my best self is managing my diet, exercising and the love of family and friends.

Randall Smith, Class of 2017, Top 10

Since being in the top 10 for the 2017 class of Over 40 & Fabulous!, I have continued my passion for philanthropy and fashion design. I created Renaissance Kares, a service organization that is geared toward bringing awareness and education to the adults and youths of the LGBTQ+ community to help eradicate HIV/AIDS, as well as co-chaired the Goode Strong Gala for two years, been a board member for A VISION 4 HOPE and worked on CHOA’s Ball committee. I am still designing gowns and creating magic for pageants and clients all over the world.

Not yet 40? The best is yet to come! This is the decade where my confidence really started to solidify and now that I’m in my 50s, I feel more secure in who I am than I ever did when I was younger. You truly don’t sweat the small stuff anymore! Lay the foundation for a healthy lifestyle in your teens and 20s and you will age so much more successfully. I was an early adopter of yoga, eating nutritiously and hiking, and these things are all staples in my life to this day.

Laura Kronen, Class of 2016, Top 10 I have been living life out loud since being included in the Top 10 in 2016. I have also been homeschooling my children for the past 4 years and have just released my second book, Homeschool Happily: Yes, You Can! My mission is to bring home education to the mainstream with my proven strategies, modern methods, dynamic resources and a cheeky sense of humor.

Debora Carrier, Class of 2015, Top 10 Over the last 5 years I have continued to embrace life and grow my company, Twice as Nice Uniforms. With the COVID crisis we have been extremely busy manufacturing essential PPE, in addition to donating masks. I have also started doing national television as a spokesperson for Crest OralB, appearing on various daytime shows, which I never dreamed I would be doing at 60! I still try to find time for exercise and down time to reflect, as I believe that my youthful drive comes not only from my passion to help others, but also from a healthy lifestyle.

Jackie Madison, Class of 2015, Top 10 Being a 2015 Top Ten Finalist was one of the biggest highlights of my life. Since then, I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone and competed in my first pageant. I was crowned Mrs. Georgia Earth 2019, winning the public speaking award and the fitness award. I’ve started my own 501c3 nonprofit business, Glamour Girl Fitness, to raise awareness of the benefits of exercise, health and wellness at an early age. Our signature program is our Mommy and Me “Time-Out” for Fitness initiative.

Beth Ann Bearup, Class of 2014, Top 10

Since being in Over 40 & Fabulous! 2014, my children and I have continued our work with our nonprofit, Sheltering Books Inc. In 2014, we collected and donated about 300,000 children’s books. Today, we are close to having 700,000 books delivered. One of the greatest things to come out of Over 40 & Fabulous! is the amazing friendships I have gained with other members. We call our group of about 25 ladies from the past years our Best Self Tribe. We support each other both personally and professionally, just like family.

Joseph Golshani, Class of 2014, Top 10 I am proud to say that Joseph & Friends Salon & Spa is still thriving and executing our mission of loving all & serving all throughout this difficult time. I have been moved by the passion of my staff and the fact that they returned with such eagerness and drive. I was recently recognized by Intercoiffure, which is a guild of the world’s most elite beauticians in New York. We recently celebrated our 31st year in business and are proud to still be a valued member of the Aveda Community, as well as one of Atlanta’s top 10 salons. bestselfatlanta.com

Kim Scholes, Class of 2012, Top 10

Since being part of Over 40 in 2012, I’ve continued to live my best life! I have plans to run the reiteration of the Peachtree Road Race this November and add a long-sleeved T-shirt to my collection. I am now the head of Human Resources for a national law firm in Buckhead, where my workforce can rely on me to meet their employment needs throughout this challenging time. I spent some quality time with my family on the North Carolina coast during quarantine and have been keeping up with friends and family during social distancing on Facebook.

Caroline King, Class of 2011, Top 10 Since I was in the 2011 winners of Over 40, so much has happened! I got divorced 8 years ago and then a year later, met the love of my life. We have now been married for almost 5 years. During my divorce, I started a small marketing company which gave me the flexibility to continue prioritizing raising my three teenagers. Two years ago I was also diagnosed with breast cancer that resulted in 5 surgeries. It was all definitely challenging, but I had so much support and love, I never really felt scared.

Maria Walden Sullivan, Class of 2011, Top 10

Since becoming part of the Over 40 & Fabulous! tribe, professionally, I have been building my business (renamed Kahootz Business Partners) assisting non-profit organizations maximize their performance. On a personal level, I have become a Nana to a wonderful little cupcake. She has brain tumors due to Neurofibromatosis (NF), so I have been focused on helping raise money for research since there is no cure. She is my inspiration and the greatest gift since my award. My advice as to living your best life is to focus on someone else’s needs.

Stacey Weiss, Class of 2011, Top 10 Over these past ten years, I have experienced every high and low that is possible. I count each one of them as a blessing. As founder of Bert’s Big Adventure, I retired as the executive director after 15 years of service in 2017. I started my own real estate career and have been enjoying it ever since. I am also writing a book on surviving traumatic experiences and raising my two teenage boys as a single mom. I couldn’t be happier or more confident about who I am and what I want for the future.

Susan Henderson, M.D., Class of 2011 I’ve been busy since 2010! We moved to Beijing for two years for my husband’s job. We then moved to the Washington D.C. area, where I took a job as the Chief of the Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit at the US Peace Corps. In 2018, I took on a two-year contract for the CDC, working for the President’s Malaria Initiative. Most recently, I moved to a position as a Medical Officer at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, in the Department of Health and Human Services.

Chronic Shoulder Pain? Tendonitis? Sprain/Strain? Solution: Bio-Regenerative Injection Therapy Because the shoulder has the greatest range of motion of any joint in the body, it must balance strength, flexibility and stability. This balance can be maintained through exercises aimed at stretching and strengthening the supporting structures to avoid pain and injuries during specific activities. Problems are generally due to overuse, which weakens and destabilizes the rotator cuff. About 20% of sports injuries involve the shoulder. So what to do? Enter Bio-Sclerotic Proliferation Injection Therapy! The treatment causes the proliferation (growth, formation) of new ligament tissue in the areas where it has become weak. A biological (not toxic, non steroidal) solution is used, which is injected in the suspect area. This causes a localized inflammation in these weak areas which then increases the blood supply and flow of nutrients and stimulates the tissue to repair itself including increased cytokine production, which are the building blocks for cartilage and other connective tissue.

We are in-network.

Our Treatments Are Covered by

Medicare • Blue Cross • Aetna • Cigna United • Humana • Coventry • Great West and most others.
