Celebrate Family and Good Health August is a great month to squeeze in those last minute family vacations, catch up on summer reading and take advantage of the break from routine. In the spirit of our Best Self mission, I hope you and your family are enjoying the fresh bounty of local fruits and veggies that are full of good things our bodies need to grow strong and stay strong as we return to the demands of our school and work routines. I am so excited about the cover of this issue. My dear friend and longtime business associate was kind enough to allow us into her home where she makes healthy meals a priority for her family. Patti Stephens has served in a key role in our family of magazines which have spanned the last two decades and include Atlanta Sports & Fitness, Georgia Athlete, Atlanta Home Improvement and Best Self Atlanta. I am so proud to have her and her family on our August cover. Thank you Patti, Mark and Joe! All the best Sherri Adair, Publisher, sadair@bestselfatlanta.com

My Best List CinéBistro - I had not been there until this past Saturday and I may never go to another movie theatre again! It is the most beautiful, comfortable, clean place I have ever watched a movie. The seats are unbelievably cozy and there is a full menu and bar. In fact, the bar atmosphere is so nice you might enjoy it even if you are not seeing a movie. The digital quality of the screen is beyond anything I’ve witnessed. It’s hands down my favorite place to see a movie, and that says a lot. I try to see a movie at least once a week and last week I saw three! After 6 p.m., it’s adults only at this movie theatre. Check out their “Movies & Mimosas!” brunch, which is served on Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Details: 1004 Town Boulevard, Atlanta, GA 30319, (404) 333-0740, www.CobbCineBistro.com NEBO Lumiere™ Flashlight - This compact, high intensity flashlight has a feminine twist. Constructed from anodized aircraft grade aluminum, it uses one powerful LED for 110,000 hours of light. Don’t let the jeweled non-slip grip fool you - the LUMIÈRE™ shows off its tough side with the aggressive self defense face. It is very utilitarian and a must for every purse. $10.99 Details: Available at Atlanta Batteries Plus locations, 4418 Roswell Road, (404) 256-0310, www.nebotools.com Chan Luu bracelets - I found out about these bracelets through my girlfriend, Christiane, while visiting her daughter, Carden, in the hospital. After suffering a head injury from a scary fall, Carden still had the presence of mind to tell the ambulance drivers not to cut her “Channy” off her arm. The good news is they were able to remove it without damage and Carden has the green light from the doctors to return to normal UGA college life. These colorful bracelets are fabulous and inspired by designer Chan Luu’s international travels. Details: www.chanluu.com Lobe Wonder - This undetectable, hypoallergenic clear patch provides relief for women who suffer from the unsightly enlargement of earring holes, a problem that can be caused by a heavy earring. It is undetectable when applied to the back of the ear lobe, and when pierced by an earring, the patch bears a major part of the earring weight, relieving the ear lobe of the pressure and pulling of the earring. They can also protect healthy ear lobes and be used to prevent damage to the lobes before it happens. Lobe Wonder is a practical, inexpensive, easy-to-use product. At $6 per box, each box contains 60 patches. Details: www.lobewonder.com

from the editor The Life in Your Food

HEALTH CARE—NOT SICK CARE

One of my favorite rules from author Michael Pollan’s book, “Food Rules,” is “don’t eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.” Most meals today have longer shelf lives than ever before, and I wonder what my greatgrandmother Eleanor would think of McDonald’s Happy Meals or Hot Pockets? Surely she would have shaken her head and offered up a plate of roast beef with potatoes from her garden instead (a meal my mother recalls from her childhood as the best tasting dish ever). With all the information we have at our fingertips, it seems we have everything we need to make the best choices, yet obesity is still on the rise. If you want to do something about changing your family’s diet, then take a look at some helpful tips (and eye-opening statistics) in our feature The Real Cost of Today’s Food (p. 30). Exercise is also important in the fight against obesity. The walkers and runners at Kaiser Permanente’s Corporate Run/Walk (p. 45) will be doing their part on September 13. Change starts when you decide to make it. I admit I’m guilty of a few fast food meals here and there, but with my husband’s help and the invaluable information I get through the Best Self community of health and fitness experts, I’ve gotten a lot better. If Eleanor was still with us today, I would take her on a tour of my own fledgling garden, and I think she would be proud of me.

It seems to me the emphasis of our Health Care System is on Sick Care. You are encouraged to see the doctor because you are SICK. I believe we need a new paradigm in medicine, one in which physicians are concerned about keeping our patients well instead of just treating disease.

Happy Reading!

We need to think about upstream medicine, looking for the reasons we get sick. Doctors need to be asking the question, “Why did this patient get sick? Why did he have a heart attack at 48 or 58? What could have been done to prevent this from happening?” Doctors are not paid to figure out WHY they are paid to get us well when we are sick.

Jeyme Colodne, Editor

I believe we have adolescent diseases that have adult / geriatric results. Some adolescent diseases are: eating too much fast food, not exercising, obesity, computer games, smoking, and drugs. And the consequences are seen 30 or 40 years later. The problem is that usually the illness is not one dimensional….there are multiple causes for why the patient is sick today. It all started 30 or 40 years ago. We cannot limit our thinking to just one cause. The patient may have pneumonia but the reason is he has smoked for 30 years. He may have heart disease but the problem started 40 years ago with too many fast food hamburgers. We need to treat diseases before they occur. It begins with hormone balance.

Hi, my name is Brian J. Johnston. I’m a busy “40-something” husband, father, and business owner, working as a personal trainer for the last 23 years. I’ve actively pursued and enjoyed physically challenging and competitive activities,

Until one day…

Various parts of my body began to rebel against me (low-back/disc issues,

tendonitis, rotator cuff, etc)

Are YOU Tired of: Taking workout orders from a “no-holds barred” instructor? … But still WANT a challenging workout!

Repetitive “time-filler” running, jumping calisthenics, etc? … And would like age and skillappropriate exercises and routines!

Trying to keep up with the exercises and others in their 20’s-30’s?

… But want to Get Your MOJO Back!

Sports therapies to help you play your best At Stability Pilates and Physical Therapy of Atlanta, Jessica Loncar, MS, PT, OCS, Cert. MDT, incorporates Pilates into her physical therapy practice. Jessica explains that Pilates develops muscular symmetry, provides resistance training, incorporates a mindbody connection and focuses on the deep core muscles while also strengthening and stretching the muscles of the extremities. If your workout has left you overly sore, consider a sports massage to help you get back on track. Sports massage therapist Joey McGlamory, PRT, MT, PT, who has worked with both professional and collegiate athletes, follows the holistic creed of treating the whole person, listening to his clients’ needs and resolving the issues at hand. With over 17 years of training in sport specific massage, he specializes in therapeutic, neuromuscular and rehab massage techniques. With over 18 years in private practice, therapist Vivian Nichols, CNMT, LMT, has a unique approach to muscular therapy that involves considering the individual’s specific needs and goals and then treating them with both Western and Eastern teachings. The benefits of her therapy include fewer visits, fast recovery and less down time. When resting, stretching and icing do not improve conditions within a reasonable amount of time, Vivian recommends seeking appropriate muscular therapy assessment, physical therapy and or a medical diagnosis.

4

For those seeking to decrease muscle soreness, rejuvenate skin, increase blood and lymph circulation or reduce pain and inflammation, then the new Icebox Cryotherapy may be the way to go. This non-invasive sports therapeutic technique involves standing inside a chamber or cryosauna where your skin’s surface temperature will be lowered to 30° F for two to three minutes. A single session will last between two and a half to three minutes and is $70. Details: (404) 890-7066, www.iceboxtherapy.com

Some active people may need a combination treatment in order to get the results they need. One such treatment is Integrative, Regenerative & Manual Medicine. IRM focuses on musculoskeletal conditions and injuries that involve ligaments, tendons, muscles or repetitive motion syndromes. Dr. Tara Frix of Total HealthCare Medical Centers explains this treatment focuses on the cause of the condition rather than just the symptoms. It combines several treatment measures, such as bio-therapeutic injectables, chiropractic therapies, regenerative injection therapy, physical modalities and nutrition. Jessica Shops Pick of the Month A Meaningful Massage I love a great massage, but there are times when a body needs more than a “frou-frou” rubdown. Whether you are an avid athlete or a novice who has pushed yourself just a little beyond your physical limit, I recommend Body Mechanics Sports Massage Therapy in Norcross. As the official sports massage provider for the Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta Hawks, Dr. Malucci and his staff have treated a lengthy list of pro athletes and celebrities, making them a trusted source specializing in corrective care. Massages range from $90 to $150, and they also offer a hyperbaric chamber treatment, great for injury recovery and improving runner endurance. Healthy and tasty ideas to nourish your body

Spiced Grilled Sweet Potatoes Traditionally known as yams, sweet potatoes are cooked and prepared in a variety of ways. From baked to mashed, these sweet treats can even be grilled. In addition to its versatility, this vegetable is a good source of vitamins C, E, potassium and iron, and has a low fat and cholesterol content. This recipe can be served alongside grilled pork, chicken or other vegetables. Ingredients: 4 medium sweet potatoes (about 3 pounds), scrubbed well 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon chipotle powder 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1/4 cup olive oil Method: Cover potatoes with cold salted water in a large pot, and then bring to a boil. Simmer until slightly resistant when pierced with a sharp small knife, five to seven minutes. Drain well. When cool, slice potatoes lengthwise. Mix together salt, spices and apple cider vinegar; add oil in a slow stream. Brush this mixture on sweet potatoes. Grill potatoes on a lightly oiled grill rack over medium heat, until grill marks appear and potatoes are cooked through, about 15 minutes. Serve potatoes warm.

Executive Chef Craig Richards uses his rooftop garden to grow the fresh produce and herbs that are added to a number of dishes. With a menu inspired by European tastes, be sure to try a meal with some of Chef Richards’ homegrown basil, squash blossoms and cowpeas. Whether you are with a large party or enjoying an intimate dinner for two, Ecco is a great Midtown neighborhood dining spot.

If you’re looking for a weekend culinary adventure, head over to Ariccia Trattoria at The Hotel at Auburn University. Sharpen your knives and get ready to dice, chop and sauté your way through their Tour d’Italia cooking classes hosted by Ariccia’s culinary team. Attendees will learn how to create pasta from scratch, make signature Italian sauces and prepare tasty appetizers and desserts. Classes will be held at 6:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month from August through November. Class size is limited to 14 guests and reservations are required. Cost is $100 per person and includes the prepared meals, a bottle of wine and a personal gift basket to take home.

Explore new ways to get more out of life

Go With the Flow Compiled by Addie Balenger & Krysta Wilkins If you are looking for an exhilarating summer activity, try rafting down the Ocoee River. Whether you’re a novice or veteran rafting enthusiast, different course levels make for a good time for kids and adults. First timers will benefit from expert guides who lead rafters through tumultuous waters, all while witnessing beautiful scenery along the way. While in the raft, it is important to be alert for what is next around the bend. However, there is no need to worry, since your guide will tell you exactly how to take on the rapids and navigate the rocks in stride. Though your arms may be sore from paddling, it’s a great rush and a challenge to be out on the river whitewater rafting. High Country Outfitters’ outpost on the Ocoee River (known as High Country Adventures), is the place to go for this exciting whitewater rafting adventure. If you feel daring, raft down the Ocoee River, or take it slow down the Hiwassee River. Trips down the Hiwassee are open to ages six and up, while the Ocoee is open to ages 12 and up. Pricing varies, but there are specials on Sundays and combo trip special offers available.

Atlanta doctors provide answers to your questions

Q

My hair is thinning. Is this a medical condition, and what can I do about it? Abnormal hair loss is known as alopecia. There are many types, some very common, such as androgenetic alopecia (known as “male pattern hair loss,” even though it affects both males and females), and other more unusual types that may require a specialty referral and biopsy to diagnose. Treatment of alopecia is dictated by the type and cause. If you are concerned about hair loss, talk to your doctor to determine if you have alopecia. If the cause of the hair loss is not apparent, you may need a dermatology referral or tests to look for hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies and autoimmune conditions.

My son was stung by a bee and developed wheezing and hives. This reaction was frightening, and I would like to know if there is some treatment available that would prevent future reactions. Your son had an anaphylactic reaction, which can be very serious. It’s important that he be tested by a board-certified allergist to diagnose his specific allergy and determine the best treatment. In insect-allergic people, symptoms include hives, nasal congestion and swelling. The more dangerous symptoms can include wheezing, swelling in the throat or tongue, difficulty breathing and loss of consciousness. In many cases, insect-venom immunotherapy (allergy shots) has proven highly successful in preventing future severe reactions.

Q

Almost everyone in my family has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I’ve heard that diabetics can have vision problems. What should they do to protect their eyes?

Everyone with diabetes should get annual vision screenings to help prevent vision complications. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that people with diabetes have their eyes dilated with drops and their retinas examined at least once a year. One of the side effects of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, the most common cause of blindness among 24 to 70 year olds. Because people initially do not experience pain or discomfort from retinopathy, regular eye exams are vital.

Elizabeth Hawk, MD Piedmont Physicians

Is there a laser treatment for varicose veins?

The Endovenous laser treatment is a quick, minimally-invasive outpatient procedure performed using imaging guidance. Once the diseased vein is closed with this therapy, other healthy veins take over to carry blood, re-establishing normal flow. The treatment takes about an hour and provides rapid relief. If you have symptoms caused by varicose veins, most insurance companies will pay for the procedure.

Can my child’s sleep affect his/her ability to do well in school? It is not surprising that quality sleep improves academic performance. It may, however, surprise you to know how common and disruptive sleep deprivation is in childhood and adolescence. Sleep is crucial for learning and memory. Many human and animal studies demonstrate the essential requirement of sleep in memory processing, including the encoding, consolidation and retrieval of new information. Evidence indicates that abstract and complex tasks involving higher brain functions are profoundly impaired after sleep deprivation compared with more simple memory tasks.

A “Cool” Way to Lose Inches Need to lose a few inches but don’t want to resort to a surgical procedure? Then CoolSculpting may be the way to go. This non-invasive fat removal procedure uses a non-invasive suction applicator to draw the adipose tissue (body fat or fat depots) and breaks down the fat cells by extracting heat, cooling the tissue and killing these fat cells. The best thing about CoolSculpting is there is no need for needles or anesthesia so there will be no downtime. Most patients will see results within three to four weeks. Although CoolSculpting is not a weight loss solution for people who are obese, good candidates include people who have noticeable bulges in areas they would like to reduce. Your Vaginal Health Natural tips for a healthier you

with Dr. Linda Kelley Ask the Anti-Aging Specialist What is Anti-Aging Medicine? Anti-Aging medicine is a relatively new medical specialty that is committed to the use of advanced medical technologies to prevent, diagnose and treat age related dysfunction and disease. What does this mean in ever y day terms? Anti-Aging doctors use hormone assessments, nutritional testing and chronic disease screening to help you stay healthy, feel healthy and look great. In addition to hormone replacement, aesthetic procedures can be part your AntiAging program. What are symptoms of low sex hormones? Women: Hot flashes, Vaginal dr yness, Low libido, Dr y skin, Brain fog, Fatigue, Insomnia Men: Decreased libido, Difficulty building muscle, Low motivation, Intimacy issues What are bioidentical hormones? Bioidentical hormones are hormones that have the same structure as hormones produced naturally in the body. They typically are synthesized and put in creams, patches or pills. They may come from your neighborhood pharmacy or from a compounding pharmacy.

• Eat raw garlic. Add raw garlic to your diet because of its strong anti-fungal properties. • Don’t douche. Douching interferes with your vagina’s self-cleansing operations and may introduce or spread infections. • Wash outside of the lines. Try to keep all cleansers out of the vagina. • Never use feminine sprays. These sprays may mask odor, but can create more issues than you can imagine from itching to infections.

My Philosophy in treatment My goal is to replace hormones that are deficient with the lowest dose that is necessar y. Hormone replacement may include thyroid, sex hormones and adrenal suppport. Many of my patients feel renewed, have an increase in vitality and enjoyment of life.

Hair, skin, nails and more Global Keratin Treatment Your questions answered

Keratin is a protein found in the skin, hair and nails. When used in hair treatments, a global keratin treatment restores hair, increases shine and reduces frizz by repairing and providing long-term conditioning and protection against UV rays and pollution. What types of hair qualify for the treatment? The global keratin treatment is designed to reduce frizziness, so all hair types such as kinky, curly and straight hair qualify. What do I have to do to maintain the treatment? The formula will gradually wash away over a period of time. It will last up to three months, depending on the hair type and maintenance. To maintain, you must use the global keratin balancing or moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, none of which contain formaldehyde.

How to make smart

In 1951, Steve Czekalinski posed with his family on the cover of Du Pont company’s magazine Better Living. The photo was meant to show the food a “typical” family would buy in a year. The cost for all this food was $1,300. Today a family of four on a moderate cost plan spends about $800 a month on food. (According to the USDA)

hich would you rather spend your money on—food or doctors’ bills? According to the U.S Bureau of Labor and Statistics, combined spending on health care and

food totaled 29.4% of the national income in 1960 -- 24.3% spent on food and 5.1% spent on health care. In 2010, the combined spending was 28%, but the portions flip-flopped -18.2% was spent on health care and 9.8% on food. While regular checkups and tests to maintain a sound body and mind are important, so is what we feed ourselves and our families. By taking a closer look at what we eat every day, we can gain better insight into why we may not be feeling our best. What we put into our bodies is one of the keys to good health, and it starts with being responsible about the food we eat. Before heading out to your local grocer, here are a few things to consider.

Thirty years ago, the vast majority of meals were prepared at home. Today, the National Restaurant Association has found that Americans eat out almost five times per week. Even when we are eating at home, the processed food outweighs the fresh food by 787 pounds per year to 602 pounds per year according to a report by the New York Times in 2010. How exactly did Americans make this shift from fresh fare to processed foods? Be it lifestyle changes, the desire to preserve food for longer periods of time or a move away from farm life to city living, this shift has edged people away from eating off the land and eating factory-produced meals instead. We can see this shift in our waistlines. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Georgia’s overall obesity rate of people with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 was 29.6% in 2010, compared to 10% to 14% in 1985. Dr. Christopher Griffith, a psychiatrist at Kaiser Permanente of Georgia, says the childhood obesity epidemic has been on the rise for the last 30 years. “In recent decades, we have seen a proliferation of fast food establishments and junk food options in our communities,” he says. In addition to this increase in the availability of junk food, processed foods are lower in cost, greater in variety and larger in portion size than ever before. Simply put, it seems easier to order a pizza or swing by the local drive-thru than it is to cook a meal consisting of local produce and meats. According to “Fast Food Nation” author Eric Schlosser, Americans spent $6 billion on fast food in 1970, and in 2000 they spent more than $110 billion. What we may be

saving in the short term (the cost of the pizza and the time in the kitchen) is costing us more in the long-term with increases in medical bills and health issues. Dr. Griffith continues, “These fatty and sugar-laden foods are often inexpensive and readily available, and children’s palates have been trained to crave them.” The consequences of poor food choices are staggering: Today nearly one in three American children is overweight or obese, and according to the CDC, obesity prevalence has tripled since 1980. As a result, many children will face an array of obesity-related health problems such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, just to name a few. www.bestselfconnect.com

L-R: Joe, Mark and Patti Stephens

The Stephens Family Associate Publisher Patti grew up on home-cooked meals and going out to eat was not the norm, but rather a treat for her and her siblings. Meals did not come in frozen, premade boxes but instead from their local grocery store. Today, Patti has continued this tradition with her family. She enjoys cooking for her family and trying out new, healthy recipes. Luckily, her husband Mark and her son Joe are not picky eaters and like tasting new dishes. Patti and her son Joe weigh in on their favorite healthy meals:

• Pasta with Veggies Sautee zucchini, squash and grape tomatoes in olive oil with a little garlic, then toss all together and throw in a few handfuls of freshly grated parmigiana cheese. Another good alternative is pasta with edamame, corn and grape tomatoes.

• Meat Marinated chicken or flank steak with sliced veggies on the grill. I usually slice red and yellow peppers, Vidalia onions, zucchini and broccoli then sprinkle olive oil, salt and pepper and throw directly on the grill.

• Chicken Chicken piccatta with roasted broccoli and noodles. (Piccatta is a method of preparing food where meat is sliced, coated, sautéed and served in a sauce).

• Stir Fry Chicken or beef, tons of veggies, brown rice and you’re done!

• Soups I use fresh vegetables and V8 juice to make a delicious soup for lunch or dinner.

• School Lunches Since Joe is allergic to peanuts, we cannot rely on the old PB&J that most kids have. His lunch usually consists of a wrap—turkey or ham, Swiss cheese, lettuce, shredded carrots, pretzels or Goldfish crackers, fruit—apple, clementine or grapes, cut up veggies - red, yellow or orange peppers, sliced cucumber, snow peas or cherry tomatoes and a couple of cookies.

Good Choices Start at Home As parents, we have the responsibility to make good choices. With childhood obesity levels at an all time high in this country, it is more important than ever to break the cycle of poor food choices. Changing the way we think about eating might seem like a simple idea, but it can be difficult to do when we are inundated with a variety of seemingly easy, fast and inexpensive alternatives to healthy food. Start by planning a healthy meal each time you set out to purchase food. Questioning the nutritional value of the food you are putting in your grocery basket is the first step you can take toward making healthy choices today for a better tomorrow. Don’t recognize the myriad of ingredients on that box of instant macaroni? Then why feed it to your family? While shopping organic may not be a realistic option for everything, selecting real food is. So how can parents address healthy eating habits for their children without setting them up for eating disorders later in life? “The best way parents can promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle for their children is by role modeling healthy habits themselves,” says Wendy Palmer, a registered dietician and program manager at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. “Children are heavily shaped by the eating habits and activity behaviors they see at home. When it comes to food, the key is to remain positive at meal times and promote healthy choices without overrestricting the less-healthy foods.”

Ready to Eat As the next generation starts making food choices on their own, it’s necessary they understand the importance of eating a well-balanced meal made of real food. “Since children are constantly growing and there is no ‘one size fits all’ portion size, we encourage parents to talk to their children during meal time to help them recognize their own hunger and fullness cues,” Palmer says. “Allowing children to serve themselves from an early age, as well as not forcing them to clean their plate, can foster their innate ability to regulate their appetite and quantity of food. If appropriately active, children should come to mealtime with a good appetite. However, if they are consistently eating more snacks and food at meals than the adults in the household, you may want to talk to your healthcare provider.”

Also make sure that your family’s healthy habits continue even when you are not at home. This includes daycare, school, babysitters, friend’s parents and grandparents. “Remember, food does not equal love, so find alternative ways to reward children,” she says. “Never punish by denying food or using treats as incentives for good behavior.” Ann Whitaker, RD, LD, CDE, supervisor of nutrition services at Kaiser Permanente of Georgia adds that mealtime should not be a war. “Stimulate interest in eating by having children help with the planning and preparation of food and letting them serve themselves when possible,” she says. “Having a small garden could help. Threatening children to get them to eat will make them associate food with an unpleasant experience and avoid it even more. Never use food as a reward or punishment because it can cause problems later on.”

According to the American Heart Association, some great ways to encourage good habits include: making a game of reading food labels - the whole family will learn what’s good for their health and be more conscious of what they eat. Instead of rewarding children with TV, video games, candy or snacks for a job well done, try to find other ways to celebrate good behavior like spending quality time together playing outdoors or seeing a movie.

Although we cannot hope to reverse poor eating habits overnight, we can move forward in a positive way, with open minds and take more of an interest in where our food is coming from. This is one of the first steps toward reversing this epidemic we face and returning to eating real food again.

Your Healthy Eating Plan & Action Guide Change can start the minute you leave your home and head out to buy food for your next meal. Armed with knowledge on fresh food and a desire to eat better, try putting these thoughts to action.

Ready To Shop

If you want to fill your body with nutrient-rich food that helps you function at your optimal level, then you’re half way there. The next step is to get rid of anything in your refrigerator that doesn’t help you to achieve that goal and replace it with food that will. Consider visiting your local farmers market to purchase produce. This way you’ll be able to talk to the people who grow the food and ask them about their methods or if they use pesticides.

Heading Back to School or Work? • Alleviate Test-Taking Fears

Author Michael Pollan sites several helpful tips in his book “Food Rules.” Among them is “don’t eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.” Chances are Grandma grew her own food, or knew the farmer that sold it to her. If having a garden or frequenting a farmers market is not a realistic choice for you, then consider another easy reference to use when shopping: My Plate. In 2011, the United States Department of Agriculture replaced the food pyramid with a new visual aid called My Plate. Using My Plate as a guide, half your grocery list for the week should be fruits and vegetables, 1/4 should be protein and 1/4 should be grains, as well as a mix of low fat dairy products.

• Avoid food products that contain high-fructose corn syrup • Avoid food products that have more than five ingredients • Avoid food products containing ingredients that a third grader cannot pronounce • Eat only foods that will eventually rot • Buy your snacks at the farmers market • Eat your colors

Tips to help you avoid making bad decisions in the grocery store: • Never go grocery shopping when you are hungry. Every aisle will jump out at you, and chances are you’ll buy things that aren’t on your list. • Shop mostly around the perimeter of the grocery store. This is where the staples of your diet are located. You tend to find less processed food in that area. • Look for items a shelf above or below eye level. The most expensive, most popular and least healthy items are often positioned at eye level, especially on the cereal aisle. • Be mindful of items available along the checkout line. They are often impulse purchases. www.bestselfconnect.com

What’s happening Sept. 13?

The program culminates in a giant celebration of fitness on Thursday, Sept. 13, across from Turner Field, with a 5K (3.1-mile) run/walk that winds through the business district of Downtown Atlanta. After the Finish Line, there are commemorative T-shirts for all participants, team and candid photos with unlimited free downloads, music by Rupert’s Orchestra, awards ceremony and a Fitness Expo, plus company teams (employees, family, friends) gather in tents for hundreds of office picnics, popularly known as the “World’s Largest Office Party.” Individuals have the option of purchasing a boxed dinner from Jason’s Deli at registration.

Run/Walk details:

There will be separate start areas for elite runners, CEOs, runners/joggers and walkers. Elite runners must submit official documentation for qualifying times: • Open Men – 6 minutes/mile • Open Women – 7 minutes/mile • Masters (40 and over) Men – 6:15 minutes/mile • Masters Women – 7:15 minutes/mile • Awards are handed out to top Overall and Masters Men and Women, best team times, most overall participation and best Tshirts. CEO Cups will go to the fastest male and female CEOs. The Kaiser Permanente® Cup is presented to Atlanta’s “most fit” companies in four categories, based on the number of full-time employees. Participation awards also are given to companies in each of 38 industry categories. BEST SELF Atlanta

Mis-Diagnosed HIP, Lower BACK & GROIN Pain? The sacroiliac joint is often overlooked by most doctors. The sacroiliac joint or S/I joint is a semi-fixed joint, located approximately at the top of each buttock, between the hip joint and the lower back. It sits between the sacrum, at the base of the spine and the ilium of the pelvis, which are joined by ligaments. It is a strong, weight-bearing synovial joint (A lubricant in most major joints) with irregular elevations and depressions that produce interlocking of the two bones. Humans have a left and right S/I joint that often match individually but are highly variable from person to person. When the S/I joint becomes inflamed or degenerated from an old fall, slip or minor trauma, it is called S/I joint syndrome or sacroiliatiis. The S/I is also susceptible to overuse, especially with women who have given birth. During the birthing process, this joint is exposed to high levels of stress, increasing that areas susceptibility to arthritic changes and arthrosis. When this happens, the joint surface is no longer smooth, causing irritation to the surrounding overlapping tissues and nerves. Weak ligaments in the area may also allow the S/I to “shift” improperly causing undo stress.

I fell 10 years ago and hurt my low back, my hip and my pelvis...I could not walk, drive, weight bare, sit, or barely stand. After just a few treatments, I noticed my body stabilizing... The problems and pain associated with S/I joint syndrome or sacroiliitis can include unexplained groin pain, back pain, hip pain, leg pain, leg inflammation and even sciatic type nerve problems. Because of these symptoms, often times physicians look to the lower back and hips as the main cause and so the patient usually continues to have off/on chronic issues in that area, leading to potentially severe osteoarthritis of the S/I joint. It is important to understand that the S/I joint relies on the health of the surrounding structures to maintain its health. For example; Weak ligaments and tendons in the area can cause mal-alignment of vital musculoskeletal structures, greatly contributing to S/I joint problems. Additionally knee problems, over extended periods of time can contribute to S/I joint issues. What to do? Steroid or cortico-steroid injections should be an absolute last option because of the potential long term negative side effects to the joint and surrounding connective tissue. Many options for treating the S/I joint are available that may even restore full normal function. The goal of these treatments is NOT only pain suppression, but rather to eliminate the cause by correcting mal-aligned structures, improving the health of the joint and reducing the ligament laxity or weakness. Most health insurance plans and Medicare cover this treatment. To see if you qualify, call Total HealthCare Medical Clinics. Norcross 770-416-9995 or Sandy Springs 678-9998531

The passion of event organizer Amy Waggoner After losing her friend to lung cancer in 2008, Amy Waggoner organized the Free to Breathe Atlanta 5K Run/Walk and One Mile Walk. All proceeds from this community event benefit the National Lung Cancer Partnership’s research, education and awareness programs. This year’s event will take place at John Howell Park on August 18. What is unique about this organization and how can people get involved? It was really important to me Amy Waggoner (center) and event volunteers to find an organization that is research-focused and makes the most of its donations. The National Lung Cancer Partnership is the only national lung cancer organization founded by physicians and researchers to find a cure and treatments for the disease. People can get involved with the Atlanta Free to Breathe® event by registering, donating, forming a team or contacting me to volunteer.

What is the biggest misconception about lung cancer? The biggest misconception about lung cancer is that it’s a smokers’ disease. In fact, 65 percent of lung cancer patients have never smoked or quit before they are diagnosed. If you have lungs, you are at risk for lung cancer. Why are you passionate about raising awareness for this disease? Lung cancer claims more lives every year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. Although we have made great progress in finding treatments for these other cancers, the lung cancer mortality rates have not changed in the last 40 years. I’ve seen the devastation, fear and hopelessness that patients and their families go through when they are facing lung cancer. Raising awareness changes minds, and changing minds changes lives. Why Weight Loss Is So Important With the national obesity rate reaching alarming heights, new diets are introduced; some with better results than others. One such diet is the hCG diet which combines a restrictive diet and the hormone hCG (Human Choronic Gonadotropin). As seen on the Dr. Oz show, hCG is a hormone that is secreted by pregnant women to ensure their fetus gets all the nutrients it needs to develop properly. In the 1950’s Dr. Simeons found that small doses of the natural hormone hCG, commonly found in high amounts in pregnant women, as well as small amounts in the adrenal glands, could decrease appetites and shave down inches on his overweight patients (both men and women). Fast forward to the present. One of the main concerns about hCG since the inception of the diet, the market has been flooded with supplements that claim they include the appetite suppressing hCG. When in reality many of these products have low to no trace of the hormone. The only way to get an effective dosage strength for long term weightloss is to have it prescribed by a medical doctor. This form of hCG is administered through daily injections of the hormone. “With proper medical supervision, the diet is safe,” says Dr. Alise Jones-Bailey. Many physicians who specialize in medical weightloss are working with individuals who are trying to lose weight in a short period of time, promoting a long term lifestyle change. Many of these patients find that the hCG diet has worked well. Dr. Jones-Bailey says “hCG works by telling the part of the brain which controls fat metabolism and storage to start burning fat instead of protein when the calories are reduced. The restrictive diet of 500 calories a day sustains the individual because the body is using up fat stores as energy while the hCG represses the feeling of hunger. The net effect is weight loss that can range from 3-6 lbs a week in both men and women. By resetting the hypothalamus to a new low default point, which minimizes carb cravings, an ongoing low carb diet is achievable long term.” Dr. Jones-Bailey further explains, “There is preliminary evidence from a small study done on clinically obese adults which notes that calorie restriction decreases insulin levels, thyroid and DNA damage. These markers are believed to promote longevity.” At the Equilibrium Weight Loss and Longevity Centers we promote a healthy lifestyle which includes hCG weight loss and hormone balancing. For your convenience we now have 2 locations, Atlanta and Roswell.

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.

Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

my journey How has your dance background contributed to your work today? I grew up in Atlanta dancing with local and regional dance theatres. I love dance and it will always be a part of my life. My ballet teacher, Fiona, inspired me a lot. She taught me about hard work and integrity to details. Dance helped me to develop my business -- it gave me confidence, structure and the desire to create. What are some of the practices that you teach? Pilates, resistance stretching, inner smile activation, breath empowerment and the conscious wellness program. Breath empowerment is a powerful practice that moves blocked energy through the body and promotes spontaneous healing and cellular renewal. And the conscious wellness program is a step-by-step assessment and redesign of the way that you are feeding your body, mind and emotions. Who most inspires you? My mom and my business mentor, Lisa Michaels. These two women stay true to their dreams and life purpose even when others cannot see their vision.

Healer and Pilates guru, founder of Body Awareness Studio How did Body Awareness Studio and the inspiration for it evolve? It was a gradual process. I didn’t even have a business plan. Many different things happened to set it in motion. In 1992, I was in a car accident where I fractured my pelvis, scapula and clavicle. Just a few weeks after my physical therapy was complete, I had the opportunity to work on a Pilates reformer and was able to experience the benefits from it. A year later while I was teaching adult ballet, one of my students asked me if I had ever heard of Pilates and if I would be willing to learn it and come back and teach it to her. So I went to train in different workshops in New York, California, Colorado and New Mexico, learning from different teachers. In the beginning I didn’t think I was starting a business, I thought I was just learning a new skill for these ladies who wanted to learn from me. What do you feel you are able to offer through Body Awareness Studio that is unique and valuable? I learned to appreciate the details of alignment and foundations for beautiful organized movement as a young dancer. I can remember what it feels like to be unsure about taking a step forward. I love to provide people with a safe way to build strength and certainty as they move forward in life. Pilates with body awareness is my favorite way to help people connect to their inner alignment and personal power. 58

BEST SELF Atlanta

You just celebrated 18 years in business. What can you attribute to your longevity? We love what we are doing here. We actively look for new ways to be in touch with our clients’ needs and provide them with creative and challenging Pilates and other modalities to look good and feel great. How has the business changed over the past 18 years? The biggest difference is that in 1993, it was rare to meet someone in Atlanta who had heard of Pilates and no one was really teaching it in the community. Now there are studios in every part of the city. My studio now has Pilates enthusiasts of all levels and we are the Georgia host site for Balanced Body® teacher training programs. Can you offer guidance for going into the process you call “Inner Smile Activation”? 1) Find a comfortable seated or standing position. 2) Bring your attention to your spine and feel the distance from the top of your head to the tip of your tailbone. 3) Begin breathing through your nose using a rhythm of four counts in and four counts out. Focus on the breath moving into and out of your body. Stay focused on the sound of the breath at first. 4) Gently stretch the corners of your mouth out to the side and turn them upward until you feel a soft lift in the upper palate of your mouth. 5) Next, breathe while sending that lift up into your central brain. Look for the sensations of opening in your head and sinuses. 6) Keep breathing gently and send the sensations from your brain down into your chest or heart center. 7) Let the energy build in your heart and send it out into every cell in your body as you continue to breathe for the 12 minutes or as long as you choose. www.bestselfconnect.com

Who are the people and professionals in your life that help you be your best self? My clients and my fellow Body Awareness instructors. I want to do my best for the people that I am teaching. As I work with some of the most brilliant, health conscious students and professionals, it’s important that I take good care of myself too. I sometimes struggle with dips of fatigue, but when I remember all the people counting on me, I pull myself together and make better choices for living in balance.
