Samuel J. Cordes
O
ver a career spanning 25 years, Samuel J. Cordes has been called the “archangel of employment rights in Western Pennsylvania” by the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. Chambers USA has noted that Cordes is highly rated for employment litigation and that juries love him. And the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has described him as “extremely smart in the scholarly sense” with “practical street-smart sense,” adding, “you don’t see that combination in too many lawyers.” Cordes is the only plaintiffs’ employment litigator in Pittsburgh ever to be named to the Top 100 Pennsylvania Super Lawyers list. He was also selected by his peers as Best Lawyers’ 2012 Lawyer of the Year in Pittsburgh for employment law - individuals, and he has been included in The Best Lawyers in America since 2004. The law firm of
Samuel J. Cordes & Associates is ranked Tier 1 in Pittsburgh for individuals’ employment law by U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” in 2014. “To be a successful employment lawyer you have to be able to ferret out the truth from employers who do not hesitate to lie, fabricate, and cover up to hide the real reasons for firing your client,” Cordes says of these recognitions. “The essence of how we view ourselves is oftentimes tied to what we do for a living. When someone loses their job—especially for an illegal reason—they lose more than just a salary. They lose a part of who they are. It is profoundly important they obtain justice for that loss. I take that responsibility very seriously, and bring to bear all the resources of my firm to help them get that justice.”
Cordes primarily represents individuals in employment, discrimination, civil rights, and constitutional law cases. He has tried more than 50 employment discrimination cases to successful verdicts, and he has successfully litigated 25 appeals before federal and state appellate courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States and the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Indeed, Cordes has had a profound impact on employment law in Western Pennsylvania, particularly through his active appellate practice. Among his prominent successes, Cordes convinced the federal appeals courts to permit the use of an employer’s corporate culture as evidence in proving a discriminatory atmosphere; and through a series of rulings he has made it easier to prove discrimination when the employer makes up an excuse.

YEARS
It’s inevitable—at some point in your life, you’re going to need a lawyer, and you won’t always be able to forecast when that need will arise. Finding an advocate in whom you can place your trust—particularly during times of strain or duress—can be a particularly daunting task. For most of us, the choice must be made quickly and decisively, and large sums of money are potentially on the line. As when choosing a doctor, we place an immense amount of responsibility in the counsel we hire to represent us. In our search for the highest quality advocate, we expect to be treated fairly, for our grievances to be heard, and for our lawyers to take on our case as if it were their own. Best Lawyers is proud to be the oldest legal peer-review organization in the United States. Since 1983, lawyers have been nominating and voting on their colleagues, culminating in what is currently the 20th edition of The Best Lawyers in America, from which this directory has been culled. The 2014 edition includes 50,834 attorneys in 134 practice areas, covering all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and inclusion is based on more than
4.9 million detailed evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers. A lot has changed in the last three decades. We now have myriad tools at our disposal, but has it gotten any easier to find a lawyer? No one is allowed to buy his or her way into Best Lawyers, so when you search for representation here, you are certain to find only the most highly regarded advocates in their chosen field. Lawyers must be re-nominated every year, thus ensuring that those listed are still considered the most esteemed in the profession. As a result, we congratulate those lawyers who have earned a place in this year’s guide and offer special recognition of those who have been honored for 30 years by highlighting their names in red throughout this publication. This year, to make your search even more useful, we have included all listed lawyers in the Pittsburgh metropolitan region. We also are pleased to announce the 2014 recipients of the “Lawyer of the Year” award. Only one lawyer per practice area per metropolitan zone is granted this distinction, based on the highest peer ratings received. Turn to page 10 to find out more. We are also thrilled to unveil our new, fully interactive digital edition, truly putting the
power to make an informed decision at your fingertips. Every lawyer with an online profile on BestLawyers.com is hyperlinked within these pages and highlighted in blue. Simply scan the QR code on page 3 with your smartphone or go online to the Regional Publications section of BestLawyers.com to access the fully responsive digital edition. It is available anytime, anywhere— accessible for free, all year long. Our aim is to quickly connect you to the Best Lawyer that best suits your needs. Whether in print or online, our publication strives to put you in touch with the legal champions in your hometown who seek justice for their fellow citizens each and every day. Because it takes a community to recognize the best, if you know an outstanding attorney who isn’t listed here, do not hesitate to go online to BestLawyers.com and nominate him or her today.
Meredith Hinshaw Director of Publications & Creative Services
METHODOLOGY Inclusion in Best Lawyers is based entirely on peer-review. The methodology is designed to capture, as accurately as possible, the consensus opinion of leading lawyers about the professional abilities of their colleagues within the same geographical area and legal practice area.
Best Lawyers employs a sophisticated, conscientious, rational, and transparent survey process designed to elicit meaningful and substantive evaluations of the quality of legal services. Our belief has always been that the quality of a peer-review survey is directly related to the quality of its voting pool.

INCLUSION
ANNOUNCEMENT
Nominations are open to anyone. Our primary sources for nominations: clients, other lawyers & marketing teams.
Ballots are generated and distributed to listed lawyers. They are designed based on the voter’s practice area(s) and geographic region.
Best Lawyers asks voters the question: “If you were unable to take a case yourself, how likely would you be to refer it to this nominee?” Nominees are given a 1 -5 rating, with room to leave additional comments.
The Best Lawyers editorial staff reviews the votes and comments. Selected lawyers are checked against state bar association sanction lists to make sure they are in good standing with the ethics committee of their state bar.
Listed lawyers are notified of inclusion and the list is released to the public.
To submit nominations, please visit www.BestLawyers.com/Admin/Nomination.aspx or email nominations@bestlawyers.com. For additional information concerning nominations, please contact us at info@bestlawyers.com.

P
ribanic & Pribanic is a western Pennsylvania practice that has become one of the country’s leading plaintiffs’ personal injury and medical negligence law firms since its founding in 1984. Indeed, the firm has taken on increasingly complex cases as its reputation has grown, securing many multimillion-dollar verdicts and settlements for its clients in the process. “In many of our cases, our work has a lasting impact on our clients’ lives,” says founding member Victor Pribanic. “And that reflects the strong resources we can offer people who have been injured through the negligence of another person, business, or organization.” Pittsburgh 513 Court Place Pittsburgh, PA 15219 phone 412.281.8844 toll free 800.392.4529 fax 412.281.4740
These resources include, first and foremost, a trialtested team of advocates with a legacy of excellence that has been recognized by peers and opponents alike. The firm also has on staff a full-time physician and a nurse-attorney to help evaluate cases. “An injury alone is not necessarily an indication of negligence, so the challenge in many medical cases is finding out whether the injury was indeed the product of a negligent error on the part of the health care provider,” Pribanic notes. “For that reason, we go to great lengths to ensure that cases are medically evaluated as soon as possible.” In addition to securing the best experts in a given field, the firm’s attorneys are known for McKeesport 1735 Lincoln Way White Oak, PA 15131 phone 412.672.5444 toll free 800.392.4529 fax 412.672.3715

their comprehensive preparation, which includes conducting focus groups and mock trials to identify how a jury will likely perceive a client’s case. “Our goal is to give the jury a sense of how our client’s injury has affected him or her on a day-to-day basis,” Pribanic explains. Pribanic has been regularly selected for inclusion in both The Best Lawyers in America and Pennsylvania Super Lawyers. A long-time member of the American Association for Justice and the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County, he has also been elected to the American College of Trial Lawyers, the International Society of Barristers, and the MultiMillion Dollar Advocates Forum. What is one piece of advice you would give to new attorneys?
Work hard. Never lie or misrepresent yourself to the court, your opposing counsel or your clients. Guard your reputation and never do anything unethical, no matter what your clients ask you to do for them. What is the biggest obstacle you see for your practice area in the next 30 years? Getting judges in the family division of the court to understand the legal and emotional complexities of family law and wanting to make a career in the family courts as opposed to using it as a stepping stone to other divisions of the court.

has named individuals as “Lawyers of the Year” in Pittsburgh, based on their particularly high level of peer recognition.
FREDERICK N. FRANK
MARTHA HARTLE MUNSCH
FA MILY L AW
EDU CAT ION L AW
PIT TSBURG H
PIT TSBURG H
Since entering private practice in 1973, Frederick Frank has focused primarily in the area of family law, with an emphasis on cases involving complex financial issues. “I do a considerable amount of work where there is a closely held asset—such as a publicly traded corporation—and there are challenging issues regarding the valuation of that asset for the purpose of equitable distribution,” he says. In the field of family law, Frank typically represents clients with marital estates that are worth more than a million dollars, while also handling a significant amount of appellate work. He notes that some of his most rewarding cases are those where he is able to help parents gain access to their children or ensure that dependent spouses have economic security. “Not only do I give my clients legal support in dealing with their complex financial matters, but I also try to support them emotionally during this time of crisis,” Frank says. “And because of that approach, I’ve become lifelong friends with many of the people I’ve represented.” In addition to being named as Best Lawyers’ 2014 Lawyer of the Year in Pittsburgh for family law, Frank was previously appointed to the Joint State Government Commission Advisory Committee on Domestic Relations Law, where he chaired the Subcommittee on Dissolution of Marriage. Moreover, he was appointed by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania to the Pennsylvania Appellate Rules Committee, and he currently serves as a solicitor for the Pittsburgh Comprehensive Pension Trust Fund.
Over her four-decade career, Martha Hartle Munsch has become known as a leader in the legal profession. When she first joined Reed Smith in 1973, she was one of only three female attorneys at the firm; and two years later, she became the first woman to serve as a full-time tenure track faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. After returning to Reed Smith in 1978, she later became the first woman in Pittsburgh to be elected partner at the firm. In her practice, Munsch has also been at the forefront of the law, concentrating her work in the employment field with an emphasis on representing institutions of higher education. She began her career back when legislation regarding employment discrimination was still an emerging field. “When I came out of law school in 1973, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 wasn’t even a decade old,” Munsch notes. “And as a junior lawyer, that allowed me to develop an expertise in what was still a developing area of the law.” While Munsch’s education practice initially focused on employment cases, it has grown to include a range of issues affecting higher education institutions. And in 2014, Munsch was named as Best Lawyers’ Pittsburgh Lawyer of the Year for education law (she was previously selected as a Pittsburgh Lawyer of the Year for labor and employment litigation in 2013). “What I love about the higher education ‘industry’ is that the finest education lawyers are those employed in-house by the universities here,” Munsch says. “So I feel very fortunate to have them as my clients and to have the privilege of working with them.”
