It’s inevitable—at some point in your life, you’re going to need a lawyer, and you

won’t always be able to forecast when that need will arise. Finding an advocate in whom you can place your trust—particularly during times of strain or duress—can be a particularly daunting task. For most of us, the choice must be made quickly and decisively, and large sums of money are potentially on the line. As when choosing a doctor, we place an immense amount of responsibility in the counsel we hire to represent us. In our search for the highest quality advocate, we expect to be treated fairly, for our grievances to be heard, and for our lawyers to take on our case as if it were their own. Best Lawyers is proud to be the oldest legal peer-review organization in the United States. Since 1983, lawyers have been nominating and voting on their colleagues, culminating in what is currently the 20th edition of The Best Lawyers in America, from which this directory has been culled. The 2014 edition includes 50,834 attorneys in 134 practice areas, covering all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and inclusion is based on more than 4.9 million detailed evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers.

A lot has changed in the last three decades. We now have myriad tools at our disposal, but has it gotten any easier to find a lawyer? No one is allowed to buy his or her way into Best Lawyers, so when you search for representation in this guide or on BestLawyers.com, you are certain to find only the most highly regarded advocates in their chosen field. Lawyers must be re-nominated every year, thus ensuring that those listed are still considered the most esteemed in the profession. As a result, we congratulate those lawyers who have earned a place in this year’s guide and offer special recognition to the select few who have been honored for 30 years by highlighting their names in red throughout this publication. This year, to make your search even more useful, we have included all listed lawyers in the Philadelphia metropolitan region, and are pleased to announce the 2014 recipients of the “Lawyer of the Year” award. Only one lawyer per practice area per metropolitan zone is granted this distinction, based on the highest peer ratings received. Turn to page 11 to see the full Philadelphia list. We are also thrilled to unveil our new, fully interactive digital edition, truly putting the power

to make an informed decision at your fingertips. Every lawyer and law firm with an online profile on BestLawyers.com is hyperlinked within these pages and highlighted in blue. Simply scan the QR code on the next page with your smartphone or go to the Regional Publications section of BestLawyers.com to access the fully responsive digital edition. It’s available anytime, anywhere— for free, all year long. Our aim is to quickly connect you to the Best Lawyer that best suits your needs. Whether in print or online, our publication strives to put you in touch with the legal champions in your hometown who seek justice for their fellow citizens each and every day. Because it takes a community to recognize the best, if you know an outstanding attorney who isn’t listed here, do not hesitate to go online to BestLawyers.com and nominate him or her today.

Meredith E. Hinshaw Director of Publications & Creative Services

METHODOLOGY Inclusion in Best Lawyers is based entirely on peer-review. The methodology is designed to capture, as accurately as possible, the consensus opinion of leading lawyers about the professional abilities of their colleagues within the same geographical area and legal practice area.

Best Lawyers employs a sophisticated, conscientious, rational, and transparent survey process designed to elicit meaningful and substantive evaluations of the quality of legal services. Our belief has always been that the quality of a peer-review survey is directly related to the quality of its voting pool.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Nominations are open to anyone. Our primary sources for nominations: clients, other lawyers & marketing teams.

Ballots are generated and distributed to listed lawyers. They are designed based on the voter’s practice area(s) and geographic region.

Best Lawyers asks voters the question: “If you were unable to take a case yourself, how likely would you be to refer it to this nominee?” Nominees are given a 1 -5 rating, with room to leave additional comments.

The Best Lawyers editorial staff reviews the votes and comments. Selected lawyers are checked against state bar association sanction lists to make sure they are in good standing with the ethics committee of their state bar.

Listed lawyers are notified of inclusion and the list is released to the public.

To submit nominations, please visit www.BestLawyers.com/ Admin/Nomination.aspx or email nominations@bestlawyers.com. For additional information concerning nominations, please contact us at info@bestlawyers.com.

Q&A

30

YEARS

with John G. Harkins, Jr. of Harkins Cunningham LLP, Philadelphia, listed in The Best Lawyers in America for 30 years the financing, accounting and the underlying economics. What is one example of a case/ matter you are particularly proud of? The “Three Mile Island” litigation may have been the most interesting and challenging assignment I have worked on. It required gaining a thorough knowledge of reactor technology, the health effects of low-level ionizing radiation, the application of epidemiology to causation issues, and the development of creative approaches to issues uniquely What would you say is the most arising out of this first major nuclear accident under the federal rewarding aspect of practicing Price-Anderson Act. To gain the in your area of law? The most rewarding aspect of my practice has required knowledge, I was able to spend a substantial amount of time been the opportunity to explore at Brookhaven National Laboratory the background of the litigation to study health effects of low-level involved—the nature of the industry, the science or technology, ionizing radiation and related

subjects; and that resulted in a continuing interest in molecular biology, a subject I had never previously studied. How has the legal industry in your field changed in the last 30 years? Law has become much more compartmentalized into what some would describe as specialties. My own view has always been that the underlying substantive law can generally be efficiently absorbed into the preparation of a complex piece of litigation, and that the more important skills involved in prosecuting or defending that litigation are those that traditionally have been described as belonging to the general litigator, a term I have always associated with the Cravath firm. What does being included in Best Lawyers for 30 years mean

to you? It is obviously an honor to have been recognized by Best Lawyers for thirty years, perhaps a reflection of the fact that I have tried to set a high professional standard and have worked very hard on behalf of our clients. What is one piece of advice you would give to new attorneys? Pay attention to your clients’ needs and objectives, and have a coherent plan for meeting those needs and objectives. What is the biggest obstacle you see for your practice area in the next 30 years? Overspecialization remains a concern of mine, coupled with an emphasis on commercialization in connection with litigation and the practice of law generally, rather than professionalism.

with Ronald B. Glazer of Astor Weiss Kaplan and Mandel, LLP, Philadelphia, listed in The Best Lawyers in America for 30 years

What interested you about going into your particular area of law? At the time, major development was taking place in

Philadelphia and the surrounding five-state area. I was offered a position with a firm that was very involved with facilitating all of this growth and had some top specialists. I seized the opportunity. What would you say is the most rewarding aspect of practicing in your area of the law? Building relationships with brilliant lawyers around the country and seeing the revitalization of areas, turning Philadelphia and neighboring cities into vibrant urban centers. What has been the key to your success? Never stop learning and performing work efficiently and economically.

What is one example of a case/ matter you are particularly proud of? Creating a condominium and air rights legal structure for the redevelopment of the Reading Terminal Headhouse in Philadelphia with a new railroad station, a “grand hall” (the former railroad shed), retail stores and restaurants, a hotel, and the Philadelphia Convention Center in order to enable separate ownership and financing of the various parts. How has the legal industry in your field changed in the last 30 years? Much more mobility and bottom line orientation with less emphasis on loyalty, professional

cooperation, and respectful relationships. What does being included in Best Lawyers for 30 years mean to you? That I must be doing something right. What is one piece of advice you would give to new attorneys? That there are many smart lawyers out there, but very few give efficient and economical good service. What would you like to change in the practice? Unnecessarily complex documents and the use of forms and documents without understanding the reason for each provision.

A Tradition of Excellence in Workers’ Compensation For the Krasnos, representing injured workers in Pennsylvania is not just a career, but a family tradition. Starting in 1936, when The Honorable Isadore Krasno—a workers’ compensation judge—established the law firm currently known as Krasno, Krasno & Onwudinjo, three generations of the Krasno family have come through the practice. After Isadore’s son Lester joined the firm in 1970, the firm was a two-man operation until the early 1980s, when it began adding attorneys and offices. In 1999, Lester’s son Jason joined the practice. “I remember sitting in my room in law school and thinking about how fortunate I was to have my father as a mentor,” recalls Jason, who is now the firm’s managing partner. “It was at that moment that I realized my calling was to work side-byside with my father and help run a family practice, and hopefully grow it and make it more successful. And not a day goes by that I regret the decision I made.” Since joining the firm, Jason has been instrumental to its expansion. Today, the firm comprises 16 lawyers across nine offices, and its primary focus remains on representing individuals in workers’ compensation and social security disability matters. “By concentrating in these areas for the past 40 years we have gained extensive experience in all types of work-related injuries, but I think the primary reason we’ve been able to grow and be successful is the fact that we are a client-oriented practice, which means clients come first before anything and everything,” Jason says. As part of that philosophy,

COVER STORY

clients are treated as members of the family, rather than as numbers or case files. The firm’s members make a point of responding to emails immediately and return all phone calls within 24 hours; they are also available to clients on weekends and even over holidays. “When someone calls the firm, they’re not going to speak to four different people before they get to a lawyer, they’re going to get to a lawyer right away, and they’re going to get their questions answered by a lawyer right away,” Jason notes. For every client, the firm creates an individualized case plan while also educating clients about the possible outcomes in their case. With their consummate experience in workers’ compensation and social security disability benefits, the firm’s lawyers are able to separate fact from fiction for clients, ensuring that they have a clear understanding of the process.

PEOPLE TRUST US AND RECOGNIZE THAT WE CAN BE A POWERFUL ADVOCATE IN THEIR CASE. “We don’t just give clients some broad idea of what’s going to happen, we explain the significance of the facts of their case and provide them with an accurate picture of how their case will proceed,” Jason says. “Everyone comes in here with some preconceived notion of workers’ compensation or social security disability, and in a very professional but blunt style we tell them what they need to hear, not what they want to hear; and I think when you combine that approach with the fact that we have been practicing in these two areas for decades, people trust us and recognize that we can be a

From left to right: Jason Krasno, Lester A. Krasno, and Andrew C. Onwudinjo

powerful advocate in their case.” Over the years, Jason has tenaciously represented thousands of injured workers against a wide array of employers and their insurance carriers, securing tens of millions of dollars in settlements for his clients. Because of this track record, he has been included in The Best Lawyers in America along with his father and Geoffrey Dlin, a former workers’ compensation judge who is also certified as a specialist in workers’ compensation by the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Workers’ Compensation Law Section. “Not only are we the only law firm in the state with three generations of workers’

compensation lawyers who have come through the practice, but we are also the only firm in the state with a lawyer who has served as a workers’ compensation judge and been certified as a specialist in the area,” Jason observes. Beyond their expertise, Jason credits the work ethic of the firm’s members as a main factor in the firm’s continued growth. “I like to think we’re the hardest working firm out there,” he says. “Every client who comes through the door receives 110 percent of our knowledge and experience, no matter how minimal the injury. And I believe that, more than anything else, has helped define our success everywhere that we’ve opened an office.” www.bestlawyers.com | 7

P HIL A D E L P HI A A commercial litigator, Ronald Schiller has focused his practice on all types of insurance litigation for the past 25 years. He currently serves as vice-chair of Hangley Aronchick Segal Pudlin & Schiller, where he oversees the firm’s insurance coverage group; and in 2014, he was selected by his peers as Best Lawyers’ Lawyer of the Year for insurance law in Philadelphia. “It’s an honor to be recognized by people you respect,” says Schiller of the award. “We handle a lot of sophisticated work, and because it’s such a team effort at this firm, I think it’s not just me who they’re recognizing with the award, but my firm and the insurance group as a whole.” Prior to joining his current firm, Schiller spent nearly two decades at DLA Piper, where he was head of litigation in the firm’s Philadelphia office. In 2009, he came to Hangley with several other attorneys from DLA Piper, and he has since expanded the insurance group to where it now comprises about 25 attorneys who concentrate mainly on coverage, bad faith, and reinsurance disputes. “Our breadth and scope have allowed us to build a first-tier, Philadelphia-based trial and appellate practice,” Schiller notes. “We also handle cases nationwide involving errors and omissions (E&O) and directors & officers liability (D&O) insurance; and in the past year alone, we’ve had the opportunity to influence the law in litigation around the country, including cases where we’re representing insurers in disputes with HMOs.”

P HIL A D E L P HI A In 1985, Margaret Sager began practicing law in the trusts and estates field as a summer clerk at a large law firm in Philadelphia. Nearly three decades later, she has been named as Best Lawyers’ 2014 Lawyer of the Year in Philadelphia for trusts and estates litigation, and her firm—Heckscher, Teillon, Terrill & Sager (HTT&S)—has been ranked Tier 1 in Philadelphia for both trusts and estates law and litigation by U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” for 2014. “At the start of my career I was slotted into the area because the firm had a need, but then I started doing the work and I loved it,” Sager says. “In this field, you’ll often represent clients over a long period of time, and getting to know and represent different generations of a client’s family has been very rewarding.” Sager handles fiduciary litigation, estate planning, trust administration, and other related areas, including mediation. She is known for having obtained significant financial results for her clients, and a number of her cases have resulted in pioneering case law decisions. Still, Sager—who is a past chair of both the American College of Trust and Estate’s Fiduciary Litigation Committee and the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Probate & Trust Law Section— credits her success to her partners, with whom she founded HTT&S in 1994: “My practice would be very different if it weren’t for my colleagues—we’ve known each other for many years, and together we’ve created a very collaborative, nurturing environment here.”
