WORLD TRAVEL A LATIN AMERICA 2 World Travel Awards – the leading authority that recognises and rewards excellence in travel and tourism – has unveiled its Latin America 2021 winners. Winners include Argentina, which claimed ‘South America’s Leading Destination’. Chile – with its dazzling array of natural wonders – was voted ‘South America’s Leading Adventure Tourism Destination’. Peru enjoyed a strong showing, picking up ‘South America’s Leading Culinary Destination’, ‘South America’s Leading Cultural Destination’ and ‘South America’s Leading Tourist Board’ (PromPeru), whilst the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu was crowned ‘South America’s Leading Tourist Attraction’. The rise of Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo was recognized with victory as ‘South America’s Leading Emerging
Tourism Destination’. Guayaquil, Ecuador won ‘South America’s Leading City Break Destination’ and Santiago de Cali, Colombia was named ‘South America’s Leading Cultural City Destination’. The incredible biodiversity of Costa Rica was acknowledged with the title for ‘Mexico & Central America’s Leading Destination’. Mexico also celebrated with a raft of destination awards including Cancún (‘Mexico & Central America’s Leading Beach Destination’); Cozumel (‘Mexico & Central America’s Leading Island Destination’); and Mazatlán (‘Mexico & Central America’s Leading City Destination’), with its tropical neoclassical architecture and paradise beach. In the hospitality sector, Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena won ‘South America’s Leading Hotel’. Wyndham Guayaquil emerged as ‘South America’s

AWARDS UNVEILS 2021 WINNERS Leading City Hotel’ and Wyndham Quito Airport as ‘South America’s Leading Airport Hotel. Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun picked up ‘Mexico & Central America’s Leading Hotel’ and Gaia Hotel & Reserve, Costa Rica was voted ‘Mexico & Central America’s Leading Green Hotel’. ‘Mexico & Central America’s Leading All-Inclusive Resort’ went to Hacienda Tres Ríos Resort, Spa & Nature Park. In the newcomer categories, Brazilian flair and indigenous style helped Six Senses Botanique to victory as ‘South America’s Leading New Hotel’, with ‘Mexico & Central America’s Leading New Hotel’ going to Dreams Vista Cancun Golf & Spa Resort. In the aviation sector, LATAM was named ‘South America’s Leading Airline’, whilst Aeromexico scooped ‘Mexico & Central America’s Leading Airline’. The results follow a year-long search for the world’s
top travel, tourism and hospitality brands. Votes were cast by travel industry professionals and the public, with the nominee gaining the most votes in a category named as the winner. BEST IN TRAVEL INVESTIGATES: LATIN AMERICA As World Travel Awards celebrates the best-of-the-best across Latin America, Breaking Travel News here takes a look at latest headlines from the region.
LATAM
LATAM LATAM has brought forward the return of several direct services from South America to Europe. The carrier said the decision follows a recent lifting of restrictions on international travel from Brazil. As a direct result of the progress in administration of Covid-19 vaccinations in Europe, recently re-established direct services to São Paulo (Guarulhos) from Madrid and Paris will expand in frequency. Increasing from three to four flights per week in October, direct flights to São Paulo (Guarulhos) from Barcelona will follow in November with three services weekly.
In the same month LATAM will also increase frequencies from Lisbon and Frankfurt to six and four direct flights, respectively, and from December the route between Milan and São Paulo (Guarulhos) will resume. “We have seen a steady growth in the interest of Europeans and Brazilians for international travel, mainly between countries open to those who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19. That is why we are constantly evaluating the possibility of resuming or expanding our operations from the European markets where we operate,” said Thibaud Morand, LATAM managing director, Europe.

Metropolitan Touring Metropolitan Touring has announced a partnership with luxury river cruise innovator, AmaWaterways, to launch the first luxury cruise experience on the Magdalena River in Colombia. Setting sail in late 2023, guests will be immersed in unique experiences on shore as well as on board a brand new custom-built, all-suite, eco-friendly river cruise ship. such as kayaking, hiking and birdwatching. “Not since my early university days of exploring the Amazon River have I felt the excitement of discovering a new destination that is so rich in biodiversity and culture, as I found on the Magdalena River in Colombia,” said Schreiner. “I’m absolutely captivated by the rich history, wildlife and friendly welcome that awaits our guests when our intimate, all-suite ship sets sail in December 2023.” Specific itineraries are currently being developed with more details anticipated in the coming weeks. Looking out from the 2329ft (710m) peak of Corcovado, you will see why Rio is called the Cidade Maravilhosa. Music is Rio’s lifeblood, and the city’s soundtrack comprises rock, old-school bossa nova, hip-hop, funk and Brazil’s many regional styles. Above all there’s samba, a rapid-fire style of music with African influences and a defining beat that is synonymous with Rio. Rio’s beaches have long seduced visitors. Copacabana Beach became a symbol of Rio during the 1940s, when international starlets would jet in for the weekend. Hogging the spotlight these days is Ipanema Beach, its fame and beauty unabated since bossa nova stars Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes introduced the world to its allure in the 1960s. For cariocas (residents of Rio), the beach is Rio’s backyard – a playground that’s free and open to all, offering endless enjoyment in the form of football, volleyball, surfing, snacking, drinking or simply relaxing amid the passing parade of people.
Speaking of Carnaval, Rio knows how to party. Whether you call it joie de vivre or lust for life, cariocas have it in spades. Carnaval, and the buildup to it, is the most obvious manifestation of this celebratory spirit. LuminOre® is well established, reliable and extremely durable. After application, it has all the properties of cast or sheet metal but without the limitations.
