CELEBRATING THE World Travel Awards – the global initiative to recognize and reward excellence in travel and tourism – has unveiled the 2020 winners of its World categories.
Winners include Maldives, which cemented its reputation as the definitive secluded sanctuary to win ‘World’s Leading Destination’ for the first time. Portugal also performed strongly, with Madeira voted ‘World’s Leading Island Destination’, Lisbon named ‘World’s Leading City Break Destination’ and The Algarve picking up ‘World’s Leading Beach Destination’. Russia’s imperial splendour was recognised with the award for ‘World’s Leading Cultural Destination’, and its cities emerging with top honours: Moscow was voted ‘World’s Leading City Destination’ and Saint Petersburg collected ‘World’s Leading Cultural City Destination’. Greek Ministry of Tourism/GNTO was voted ‘World’s Leading Tourist Board’. In the hospitality sector, Armani Hotel Dubai fended off a tough field to emerge as ‘World’s Leading Hotel’, whilst Sardinia’s Forte Village Resort claimed ‘World’s Leading Resort’. The blissfully remote Amanpulo, Philippines was named ‘World’s Leading Dive Resort’, and The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort took ‘World’s Leading Luxury Island Resort’.
Vietnam’s InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort gained recognition for its eco-credentials with ‘World’s Leading Green Resort’. Royal Penthouse @ Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai was named ‘World’s Leading Hotel Penthouse’. In the newcomer categories, Address Sky View, with its mesmerising panorama of Dubai’s skyline, secured ‘World’s Leading New Hotel’, whilst the barefoot chic paradise Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa picked up ‘World’s Leading New Resort’. Brand winners include Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts (‘World’s Leading Luxury Hotel Brand’), Sandals (‘World’s Leading All-Inclusive Company’) and Frasers Hospitality (‘World’s Leading Serviced Apartment Brand’).
In the aviation sector, Etihad Airways lifted ‘World’s Leading Airline’, whilst ‘World’s Leading Airport’ went to Dubai International Airport. Aeroflot - Russian Airlines was voted ‘World’s Leading Airline - Business Class’, Emirates as ‘World’s Leading Airline - Economy Class’, with ‘World’s Leading Airline - First Class’ scooped by Oman Air. The results follow a year-long search for the world’s top travel, tourism and hospitality brands. Votes

APOLÓNIA RODRIGUES DARK SKY ASSOCIATION Dark Sky Alqueva allows guests to stare deep into the cosmos and has been recognised as a global hospitality leader by the World Travel Awards. Here Best in Travel chats with Apolónia Rodrigues, president of the Dark Sky Association, to find out more about the project. Best in Travel: Congratulations in your recognition by the World Travel Awards as the World’s Leading Tourism Development Project. How does it feel to have won? Apolónia Rodrigues: It is a great honour to receive such a recognition, it makes us feel that we are moving in the right direction - but with that comes a great sense of responsibility. When I started to develop Dark Sky Alqueva it was necessary to overcome many obstacles - some were due to the lack of knowledge about the importance of the night sky, while others meant it was not recognised as a tourism product. But not only that, we also had to overcome the lack of knowledge about what light pollution is and the negative impacts it has on our environment.
So, to receive this recognition from the World Travel Awards which showcases our destination and mission to implement sustainable development using astrotourism as the catalyst to protect the night sky - is simply magical. BiT: Can you tell our readers a little about the Dark Sky Project and what it brings to global tourism? AR: Dark Sky is a concept and a brand. As a concept, it implements a model of integrated sustainable development in our destination, which means the establishment of a connection between the territory and the atmosphere above it, turning the sky and earth into one. With this is a mission to protect the night sky. Dark Sky as a brand is intended to bring added value to the

territories where this can be implemented and the Dark Sky Alqueva is the first destination in our network. Dark Sky Alqueva is a stargazing destination with a clear mission and with a short-, medium- and long-term strategy. Dark Sky Alqueva is a region which covers an extensive area of almost ten thousand square kilometres around the Alqueva lake, including Portuguese and Spanish territory. Created in 2007 and owing to the quality of its night sky, this area was certified as a Starlight Tourism Destination in 2011, the first place in the world to obtain this certification. The Dark Sky route offers a wide range of night-time activities for astronomical observation, with the naked eye or using telescopes.

Astrotourism can be a great adventure and that is being demonstrated in Dark Sky Alqueva through our initiatives and enthusiastic activities. Under a protected night sky many activities can be organised like stargazing sessions, blind wine tastings, night canoeing, yoga sessions, walks, bird watching, wildlife watching, Dark Sky Parties, astrophotography workshops and more. BiT: How useful are the World Travel Awards when it comes to promoting the project to a global hospitality market? AR: The World Travel Awards brings reputation and top-level recognition - and that helps us to go further in terms of visibility and capacity to reach international markets. But this recognition also helps to achieve our goals as Dark Sky concept, in terms of protecting the night sky and the implementation of integrated sustainable development in our destinations. BiT: This has been a tough year for hospitality businesses of all kinds – what toll has Covid-19 taken on your operations? Can we expect a change in direction as we enter 2021? AR: Yes, indeed tourism is being hit in a hard way but with resilience and vision some destinations will be able to rise and reinforce their strengths. The destinations that are less crowded and are in connection with nature, like ours, will tend to be the first to recover - so governments, as well as the national and regional tourism
organisations, must offer special attention and more support to these. But, above all, we must keep in mind the importance of maintaining our identity and the focus on sustainable development. Since 2018, we were seeing an increase in the search for tourism products that could offer more meaningful experiences - not only in terms of knowledge but also related with the inner self. It is why we have seen a huge increase in the demand for our destination. This summer, during the pandemic, we had a huge increase in our stargazing sessions that helped us to recover the time we were closed during the first state of emergency. But also in other activities like night canoeing and in the workshops of astrophotography with Miguel Claro. These activities are nature
based and done in small groups or individually. Such increase, was also noticed in the activities of our network of partners from accommodation to gastronomy. But the winter and early spring will be our test.

KARAM CHAND ROYAL BRUNEI AIRLINES Best in Travel: Congratulations on your victory at the World Travel Awards, with Royal Brunei Airlines having taken the title of World’s Leading Cabin Crew. How does it feel to have honoured in this way? Karam Chand: Royal Brunei Airlines is humbled to receive this award. The recognition of our people on the global stage is very special. Team RB is no doubt jubilant and we will celebrate this win in the true Bruneian way. KARAM CHAND
After a challenging year, Royal Brunei Airlines has been recognised as a global leader by the World Travel Awards. Here Best in Travel chats to chief executive, Karam Chand, to find out how the title has led to renewed optimism as we move into 2021
This award ranks very high among the many achievements of the national carrier. BiT The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has said aviation will not recover to levels seen last year until 2024. But things will not be the same moving forward. What changes can we expect in the aviation sector as we move into 2021? KC: No doubt 2020 has been the toughest year for the airline industry and the multi-year recovery to pre-Covid-19 levels is confronting. The first and immediate priority is to assure the travelling public of the work done by airlines, airport and health authorities that makes flying safe. The chances of on-board transmission of the virus is relatively low without social
distancing thanks to the design features of the aircraft and additional layers of protections adopted by airlines. Cash burn is huge and revenue generation becomes so critical. The second priority is matching capacity to demand. Chasing profit-less volumes to make certain metrics look good does not make any business sense. Downgrade capacity where possible and seek the right yields. Third priority is differentiation, offer something unique. For RB it is about warm Bruneian hospitality. Guests notice the little things we do to make their experience that much better and the recognition of our cabin crew is a great testament of this. BiT: How important is Royal Brunei Airlines to the hospitality sector in Brunei? The destination remains something of an undiscovered gem among travellers – is this set to change? KC: RB provides more than eighty percent of the seats to/from Brunei. That itself is huge and as a result of what we do in international markets makes a big difference to the rest of the hospitality sector.

The new routes to Tokyo, Beijing, Taipei etc. have opened new markets to Brunei. The airline schedules, prices, service and experience on the ground matter to our guests. By working closely with our local partners we have got these right. The challenge remains reaching the customers early in their dreaming and planning phases to provide an alternative destination they have not experienced. Brunei offers an authentic travel experience with one of most friendly people on the planet, unique food, culture, flora and fauna. Plus it is safe (including from the virus) and a short distance from most Asian cities by air. It has products for everyone – families, eco-tourism, diving, golfing and surfing, to name a few. It is a gem, ready to be discovered and to enjoy the travel experience most
discerning guests are seeking. We have taken on board the dual role of airline and destination marketing and our messages are getting through with increased visitor arrivals and potential visitors researching about RB and Brunei. Once the borders open up, we will increase our marketing in key markets to strongly push Brunei, our on-line dynamic packing tool has been enhanced to capture FIT market and our revised network plan has very strong focus on inbound tourism. BiT: How will winning at the World Travel Awards help the carrier bounce back in 2021 after the challenges of this year? KC: We are celebrating our 46th anniversary this year since incorporation. We have established ourselves globally as a four-star, top 70 airline in the world. Our strong service ethos coupled with the global
recognition including this prestigious award is extremely valuable in international marketing. We are one of smallest network carriers, competing with global brands and being able to showcase our brand through World Travel Awards and other well recognised global awards is extremely helpful when we are looking to partner with the global travel industry, corporates and positioning ourselves in the markets we operate.

One of them is transformations, changes to surprise in a good way partners and customers. BiT: Can you tell our readers just a little about the company and what it brings to the hospitality market in Russia? NL: Academservice is a group of
companies that deals with several areas of activity. This includes not only travel services in the field of culture, sports, and music – major events, regular contracts. We also organise MICE events, business trips, group tours in Russia and CIS. Our company is also the biggest consolidator and distributor of individual hotel bookings on the Russian market with our own online sales system. BiT: How would you describe the mood in Russian tourism as we look ahead to 2021? Is there a hope a vaccine for Covid-19 can lead to a return of something like normality? NL: Russia has experienced more crises than many other countries in its history. We have strong-minded people who do not lose hope for the future and able to adapt for new business opportunities. HARRY THEOCHARIS MINISTER OF TOURISM, GREECE Having taken a top title at the annual World Travel Awards Grand Final, Best in Travel here chats with Greek minister of tourism, Harry Theocharis, to find out how it feels to have won. Best in Travel: Congratulations on your recognition as the World’s Leading Tourist Board at the World Travel Awards. How does it feel to have won? Harry Theocharis: It is a great honour and a recognition of the hard work we did this season, under very strenuous circumstances, risk and uncertainty. This year proved the opposite of that expected, the most difficult season for global tourism in the last decade.

My goal as minister of tourism in Greece, from the beginning of the pandemic crisis, was to ensure that our country will open to tourists with safety. Safeguarding the health of tourists as well as of locals has been and will continue to be our number one priority as we are now preparing for the recovery season of 2021.
Thanks to our coordinated efforts and the strategy that Greece followed, we welcomed more than six million foreign visitors during a very short fourmonth season, and everyone went home healthy and safe. Our vision for 2021 is to remain a top safe destination, offering unique experiences to visitors. BiT: How useful are the World Travel Awards when it comes to promoting Greece to a global hospitality audience? HT: Visibility built on results and effectiveness such as the World Travel Awards offer is now more than ever a powerful tool in promoting our destination. Thank you for awarding our organisation for the successful efforts in safely opening Greece to tourism during 2020. This recognition ignites our will and commitment to offer visitors a unique and safe travel experience in 2021.

BiT: It has been a challenging year for hospitality across Europe and, indeed, around the world. What do you think caught the eye of voters at this difficult time?
BiT: Does the prospect of a vaccine for Covid-19 inspire confidence in the Greek tourism sector that the journey back to normality can begin as we look to 2021?
HT: Undoubtedly Greece did a very good job in handling the health crisis caused by the pandemic.
HT: We expect 2021 to be a year of recovery, as people more than ever have the desire to travel.
Our government’s pre-emptive lockdown strategy early on and the meticulous measures and protocols that we put in place in order to open the country to tourism paid off. In practice, as actual visitors enjoyed their stay safely in Greece, this also significantly enhanced our country’s brand image as a top global destination. It is no coincidence that this year Greece returned to the top-five global tourism brands according to Ipsos survey, among 50 countries.
To make this desire and actual decision, several factors need to combine: the vaccine and possible effective medication, financial recovery of the markets and of course a common set of rules for travelling, at least within Europe, clear to everyone and agreed by all the stakeholders. From our side, we are working closely with all the bodies pushing towards this direction, as it is the only viable option if we want tourism to make a comeback in 2021. Greece is at the forefront of this effort and I am confident that
next year will be a recovery season for our tourism and a safe, rewarding season for our visitors.

BiT: Having opened in late 2019, the resort has taken its place at the top table of hospitality in record time. What is it that caught the eye of voters?

BiT: How would you describe the mood in Maldivian tourism currently? Does news of a potential vaccine lead to hope for a more normal year in 2021? SD: The mood is very positive and being the first country to reopen the borders for tourism certainly helped to revive the market. The ministry of tourism did great job in handling the pandemic situation. Being an island destination with one island one resort concept there is no other place in the world which is safer than Maldives. Next year will be one of the best years for Maldivian tourism and we are receiving fantastic number of bookings for the first quarter of 2021..

SAINT PETERSBURG: A Saint Petersburg is an open-air museum. THOYYIB MOHAMED MALDIVES MARKETING & PR CORPORATION Best in Travel: Maldives has been recognised with the top prize of World’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards this year, alongside trophies for Indian Ocean’s Leading Beach Destination, Indian Ocean’s Leading Cruise Destination and Indian Ocean's Leading Dive Destination. How does it feel to have won? Thoyyib Mohamed: We are extremely proud and happy to have won these awards! It feels like our marketing efforts and teamwork have paid off tremendously.
With the Maldives having claimed a number of top titles at the World Travel Awards, Best in Travel here catches up with Thoyyib Mohamed, managing director of the Maldives Marketing & PR Corporation, to discover how the trophies will help the recovery from Covid-19.
Together with the government, stakeholders and travel and tourism industry, we have always strived to achieve excellence, and this is what we have achieved right now. We are looking at the result of our hard work and resilience. Even during these unprecedented times, we have not stopped our work in trying to make sure that Maldives remains on the top of the most preferred tourist destinations in the world. These awards are a testament to the love the world has for Maldives and we would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who has made it possible for us to have come this far. BiT: How useful are the World Travel Awards trophies when it comes to promoting the Maldives to a global tourism market?
TM: World Travel Awards trophies are a testament to the love the world has for us, and also the hard work and resilience we have put into the marketing efforts over the years, especially this year. This is useful for us because it will highlight the fact that Maldives remains safe for travellers and is one of the most desired destinations in the world. It is bound to give assurance to the global tourism market that Maldives is definitely a must-visit destination and that our services are impeccable, the luxury and the experiences we offer is boundless, and we carry a natural beauty like no other. We will most definitely be using the receival of this award in our future marketing campaigns and endeavours to make travellers dream of visiting the destination. BiT: Having reopened to international tourists earlier this year, how has the Maldives been recovering from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic? TM: The spread of Covid-19 was widely spread in the great Male’ region only. Our small island nation’s unique geographical features, together with stringent measures in place, are our biggest advantages in combating the spread of Covid-19. One of the first steps taken to curb the spread of the virus was closing our borders on March 27th. However, after four months of border closure, Maldives once again reopened the borders to international tourists on July 15th.

Safety is the destinations top priority and already an impressive 94% of resorts in the Maldives have reopened for business, and several hotels, guest houses and liveaboards have resumed operation as well, all in line with the comprehensive Covid19 safe tourism guidelines and hygiene certification programme issued by the Maldivian ministry of tourism in June. All resorts, guest houses and hotels situated in the island nation are required to take protective measures, ensuring the safety of tourists and staff working in the industry.. With these measures in place we are now ready and looking forward to welcoming back tourists to our beautiful country. Since the reopening of the border, we have been witnessing a gradual increase in the number of tourist arrivals each passing month. Tourists from different parts of the world are visiting Maldives to rediscover the beauty of this safe haven. According to the latest statistics by Maldives Immigration, a total of 56,541 tourists arrived after reopening of the borders. Majority of the tourists are from Russia and UAE, followed by the USA and UK. Other top arrival countries include Spain, Brazil, Germany, France, India, and Egypt. As traveling to Maldives does not require quarantine or self-isolation of 14 days, it makes travel easily accessible. With the ease of travel restrictions and the extension of the negative PCR test for Covid-19 from 72 hours to 96 hours prior to arrival, we are hopeful that there will be a further increase in tourist arrivals. The introduction of split stay is also an added incentive for tourists to visit different tourist establishments with prior approval as per the guidelines by the Ministry of Tourism. Though it will take time, we will hopefully reach a favourable level of tourist arrivals by the end of the year.
BiT: What activities can be expected from the Maldives Marketing & PR Corporation as we move into 2021 to ensure the market is fully recovered next year? TM: With the remarkable milestone reached in 2019, we started off this year with high hopes but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our marketing plans were disrupted and we had to come up with new tactics and shift to digital platforms to promote the destination. Despite the many challenges, we have been working hard to ensure that we are a safe haven for travellers, and we are on a fast recovery path. We have carried out numerous networking meetings between industry partners like airlines, tour operators, agents and online travel agents to explore what could be done together in the year ahead. We have carried out over 356 different marketing activities in 22 global markets. 260 activities were carried out during this pandemic; some of these include fairs, webinars, FAM trips, online roadshows, outdoor campaigns, digital media campaigns and more. We estimate over 18 carriers to fly into Maldives by the end of November with more to follow in the coming months and by 2021. We are strategically focused on targeting all countries that have opened borders and are able to fly. In this regard, we have also developed an air travel bubble with India as well as the UK which enables more connectivity between the two countries. We have also started a global media campaign focusing on ten key markets to promote the destination on various online and print media platforms, simultaneously. Our main aim is to keep travellers dreaming of the destination and keep our destination presence
visible, which will ultimately increase travellers by next year. Hopefully, we will be able to reach pre Covid-19 numbers soon. Different ideas were gathered during this unprecedented time and we are gearing up to face next year to explore new markets and try and come up with interesting marketing tactics to make this beautiful Maldives more visible for the potential travellers. We see massive growth for the upcoming year, and we believe we can reach the 2019 numbers. We are confident that with our current marketing efforts and full support from the government, stakeholders and everyone in the tourism industry, we will be able to see a significant growth in tourist arrivals. Our hope is to increase our efforts day by day and continue to work diligently to ensure that the market is fully recovered next year. Our marketing activities are quite successful, and we have received extreme support from our PR agencies from key markets as well.
