Maine’s City by the Sea

H

enry Wadsworth Longfellow, a 19-century poet and Mountains Region of western Maine, the rugged coastline of resident of Portland, referred to the city as a “Jewel by the Acadia National Park, the sandy beaches of southern Maine, and Sea.” Throughout the Greater Portland area, there are plenty of the breath-taking White Mountains of New Hampshire. u reasons to say it’s a gem. The city of Portland offers a small-town feel. It’s rich in history, culture, art, live music, museums, shops, restaurants, pubs and microbreweries. Parks and green space can be found around many corners. Located on Casco Bay, you’ll hear city sounds combined with the mew of herring gulls and rhythmic gong of bell buoys. The Old Port, with its cobblestone streets, gas light fixtures and classic brick buildings, oozes charm and vitality. From the Portland Observatory on Munjoy Hill, you can see the entire city and Casco Bay. Other special places to visit include Fort Williams Park with its 90 acres of gently rolling grassy hills, spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, fort ruins and Portland Headlight, the oldest lighthouse in the state. It’s the perfect place to picnic, fly a kite, take a walk or run, swim, and watch the waterfront action. From Eartha, the oversized globe at DeLorme to the Maine Wildlife Park and Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, there’s so much to see and do. The towns of Greater Portland are pedestrian and bicycle friendly. Within minutes you can be at lighthouses, beaches, lakes, islands, theaters, art galleries and more. And it is a convenient location to outlying areas including the Lakes and

n the heart of the Old Port, located at 36 Market Street, is the new local surf shop in Portland, Maine. The Maine Surfers Union is run, owned and supported by a large number of local surfers. Our staff is in the water year round testing, studying and enjoying the conditions of our local Maine surf. Maine has a lot to offer surfers. Our experience is free to you as you browse a wide selection of handcrafted beautiful boards that will take your surfing to the next level. Whether you’re a seasoned vet or a first-time rider, we have the boards and experience to make you progress as a surfer, leaving you stoked, knowing you got the best out of your surfing experience. The surfs heating up in Portland as more and more Mainers become in tune with the paradise around them and begin to follow their natural instinct to the sea in a bold, seemingly new perspective that actually brings us back centuries. Maine Surfers Union is a fully-stocked surf shop including the very best names in paddleboard and surfboards as well as Mainemade goods, clothing, wetsuits, leashes, board bags, wax and everything you’ll need. Just up the road in Falmouth, three miles from downtown Portland, you can find our paddleboard rental program at Handy Boat Complex, 215 Foreside Rd, right next to the Falmouth Sea Grill (great for grabbing a drink or lunch after a long day’s paddle). Float off our little dock into a rich paradise of summer in Maine. Come for two hours or spend the day adrift, exploring Maine’s beautiful coast and enjoying its many

islands. Get your sea legs, explore Muscle Cove for wildlife or have a race out to the surrounding islands. Experience a great work out at your own pace and if you get too hot, you can take a splash to cool off. To me there’s nothing better then feeling physically rewarded while enjoying every minute of the exercise and gaining natural skills in the process. No matter what your age, everyone leaves the water with a smile. We’ve teamed up with Greener Postures, one of the top yoga studios in Portland and Falmouth. Together, we provide paddleboard yoga classes taught by professional instructors, which have turned out to be a great combination. Everyone who tries it seems to get a smile stuck on their face that won’t go away. Great for beginners or someone looking to spice up a sport they already love. Instructors give the class time to get familiarized with the boards and everyone has a great time—I know because they tell me. With a wide surfing community, there’s never been a better time to dust off that old dream or polish a new one and see if she floats. Maine Surfers Union is here for all Maine surfers to answer the call and have fun in the sun. A once in a lifetime experience. Sailing four times daily.

Portland Schooner Company has been making memories for Casco Bay visitors since 2002. Owned and operated by husband and wife team, Scott Reischmann and Michelle Thresher, they offer an authentic, Old World sailing experience from May through October aboard Portland’s only historic windjammers. Whether you’re looking to experience the Portland waterfront from a unique perspective or just hoping to step back to a simpler time for a couple hours, Portland Schooner Company offers an experience you don’t want to miss. The adventure begins aboard one of their classic wooden schooners, Wendameen or Bagheera. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, both schooners were designed by famed naval architect, John G. Alden, in the early 1900s and built by some of the best craftsmen in the world at the shipyards of East Boothbay, Maine. Two-hour sails depart from the Maine State Pier in Portland’s Old Port and are offered four times daily, presenting visitors with a perfect vantage point for viewing Portland’s unforgettable sights and sounds – from lighthouses and seabirds to seals and the rocky coastline. The friendly, professional crew is not only there to provide you with a safe trip … they’re happy to share a bit of Casco Bay history and trivia. You’re invited to join in any way you’d like: hoisting the sails alongside a deckhand, taking a turn at the ship’s wheel, or just relaxing and enjoying the ocean breeze and salt air. And you’re welcome to bring food and drink, including beer and wine, aboard. The cost for a two-hour sail is just $39 for adults and $15 for children. Though not required, reservations are strongly encouraged. If you’ve got more time to spend on Casco Bay, Portland Schooner Company also offers charters for family or corporate functions, lunchtime lobster bakes on scenic Cow Island, and overnight excursions where you can spend an evening nestled in a quiet island anchorage. u

In 1797, the Tuttle family moved to the 300-acre farm that once covered the Desert of Maine where they successfully raised crops of potatoes and hay for several years. Failure to rotate crops thereafter, combined with massive land—clearing and overgrazing, resulted in severe soil erosion that exposed this hidden desert. As the spreading sand grew uncontrollable, the Tuttles surrendered, leaving the desert to its destiny. u

hroughout the State of Maine there are more than 200 privately-owned campgrounds in addition to a number of State Parks that offer camping facilities. Many privately-owned campgrounds are included in this issue of Activities Guide. A camping stay offers the opportunity for a memorable vacation experience, whether simply camping as a vacation or camping as a means to be near an activity you are planning to enjoy. Diversity is the word to best describe the choices of Maine’s many campgrounds; you’ll discover a tremendous variety in the size, location and type of campgrounds located throughout the state. These range from very small properties where the camping experience is the focus to large resorts that offer every imaginable amenity. Even if you have never camped before, or do not have camping equipment, you’ll find quite a number of places that offer onsite rentals and cabin rentals. Some RV dealers also offer rental units for nearby campgrounds. This is a great way to break into the camping experience that has become one of the most popular types of vacations today. naples The Heart of Maine’s Sebago Lake/Long Lake Region

Located midway between the coastal city of Portland and the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Naples is easily reached from any direction. Route 302 is the primary route through Naples. There are many seasonal and year-round businesses, along with numerous lodging facilities and camping areas. Thanks to its unsurpassed location, Naples is a popular summer resort and year-round vacation area—as well as a rapidly growing residential and business community. Visitors naturally come to a stop when they arrive at the Naples Causeway in the center of town; the view up Long Lake to the White Mountains is one of the most spectacular in New England. u

When planning your getaway, consider what you are looking for in your camping experience --just a place to call home base for other activities you are planning, or a facility that offers enough that it is a vacation in itself. Some campgrounds offer on-site recreational opportunities such as a pool, rec hall and sports fields, scheduled activities and a variety of entertainment. Many are located on lakes, rivers or the ocean, and offer a beach, swimming, fishing and even a variety of boat rentals. In the more popularly visited areas of the state, campgrounds often provide a home base for area activities and attractions and quite a number either offer shuttle service or are on a trolley route. Consider your needs and expectations in advance to maximize your vacation experience and undoubtedly your dollar value. It may be important to know what is offered or to get information about particular questions in advance. This can be done by visiting the campground’s Web site, referring to their advertising or calling with questions. Even if a particular resource or recreational opportunity isn’t offered at the campground, it may be available nearby. The majority of campgrounds and resorts suggest reservations and some require a minimum stay, especially over weekend and holiday periods. And finally, of course, understanding reservation

Lewiston AUBURN Hot Air Ballooning in Maine By Marissa Gianino Taking part in Lewiston/Auburn’s Annual Great Falls Balloon Festival was truly a chance of a lifetime. From lift-off to landing, hot air ballooning was one of the most exciting and scenic outdoor Maine activities! From 2,000 feet up, I experienced both a breathtaking aerial view and an even more amazing sight around me. The surrounding sky was filled with several other hot air balloons of different colors, patterns and sizes. The entire experience exceeded any expectations I held of hot air ballooning. Watching the pilot and grounds crew set up for the launch was an interesting and informative part of the flight. Since the wind chooses where you land, the crew follows the balloon from their vehicles so they can be there to help land and deflate the balloon. I was intrigued by the whole process from start to finish. A celebratory champagne toast with the pilot, crew 30

members and landowners brought our Maine adventure to an end. Cheers to a Maine tradition! After my flight at last year’s Balloon Festival, I highly recommend that you plan a trip to this year’s festival! u

RANGELEY

T

he Rangeley Lakes Region is one of Maine’s true wilderness zones, located in the secluded western mountains of Maine, near the New Hampshire border. It is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. Skiing, hiking, hunting and kayaking are just a few activities to try in Rangeley, but fly-fishing is one of the most popular. Rangeley offers the angler the best chance at catching a 5 pound brook trout anywhere in the eastern United States. Rangeley has several lakes and ponds that offer great fishing and a few rivers

western lakes & mountains that also offer superb fly-fishing. The near perfect regulations imposed by the State on some bodies of water, such as fly-fishing only, barbless hooks only and catch and release only, have proven successful. The brook trout are not the only cold water species available here. Landlocked salmon stocked in the late 19th century, have a solid population as well. Fabled waters such as Rapid River, Kennebago River, Cupsuptic River, Upper Dam, Rangeley Lake and Quimby Pond offer world class fly-fishing. These waters are all easily accessed from Rangeley. There is an abundance of fly-fishing lore that is associated with the Rangeley region. Several traditional streamers like Carrie Stevens’ Grey Ghost and Herb Welch’s Black Ghost were developed here. Louise Dickinson Rich wrote several books while living along the Rapid River. Her most famous, We Took to the Woods, was written at Lower Dam, a once working log drive dam, now torn down and presently memorialized. It is some of the best brook trout-holding water on the river. The fishing season runs from April 1st to September 30th, with prime time being May-June and September. The summer offers plenty of opportunities for anglers willing to get out and explore. From small ponds to big lakes, small streams to large tail-waters and high mountain ponds , Rangeley has something for every flyfisher. Kash J. 36 miles of National Scenic Byway in the Western Mountains of Maine Route 4 and 17 in the Rangeley Lakes Region offers 36 miles of National Scenic Byway – 1 of 3 in the State of Maine and only 150 such designated routes in the entire United States. The Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway offers not only scenic views and vistas, but an abundance of recreational opportunities as well. Heading north on Route 4 just after the start of the National Scenic Byway in Madrid, is the great opportunity to explore Smalls Falls. A 126-foot waterfall with several tiers offers thrills for the most adventuresome to the youngest members of the family. The main falls is easily viewed from the picnic area, but the walk across the bridge is where the real fun begins. You’ll find a trail alongside the main falls that will bring you up the tier and offers opportunities to get into the pools of each tier. Don’t miss finding the path that will lead you across the forested area to the other branch of the river and additional opportunities to slip, slide and splash in the Smalls Falls stream.

he communities along the Maine High Peaks Scenic Byway of Kingfield, Carrabassett Valley and Stratton-Eustis are home to many shops and restaurants, outdoor adventure service specialists and art galleries, with many more natural assets to explore in the Unorganized Townships along the Byway to the Canadian Border as well. The southern Gateway is just below the Village of Kingfield, which is the home of the Stanley Museum and the Ski Museum of Maine. Regional information is available at the High Peaks Information Center, continuing north along the Carrabassett River to Carrabassett Valley adjacent to the airport with Bigelow Range as the backdrop. Maps of the many hiking trails and 200 plus miles of ATV trails throughout the region are amongst information available at the V.C. North along the S-curves of the Carrabassett River, the hugely popular Narrow Gauge pathway for non-motorized activities can be seen across the river. The Sugarloaf Outdoor Center has a mountain bike shop to service needs for riders of all ages and abilities who take advantage of the more than 50 miles of trails, from little kids’ beginner terrain, to vertical boulder challenges for the experts.

Additionally, disc golf is a new and growing activity for the summer of 2013 at the Outdoor Center. Travel up the Sugarloaf Access Road, for golf at Maine’s # 1 Rated Course for over twenty years, go for a zip-line ride on the mountain, or try the summer’s new adventure, Segway riding from the Base Village. Returning to the northern journey on the Maine High Peaks Scenic Byway, a new kiosk with comprehensive trail maps of the area’s varied hiking options in north and south regions is located in the parking lot at the crossing of the Appalachian Trail in Wyman. There is only one place where the Appalachian Trail meets the Northern Forest Canoe Trail: the Village of Stratton. Traveling north over the South Branch of the Dead River, Flagstaff Lake and the Bigelow Range come into view; have the camera ready! Continuing north to the Village of Eustis and following the North Branch of the Dead River, the route parallels Col. Benedict Arnold’s trip north to Quebec in 1775. Stop at one of the scenic turnouts, including the northern Byway Gateway with breathtaking views of the Chain of Ponds. The final few miles finish in Coburn Gore, the north end of the Maine High Peaks Scenic Byway. The Moose River Bow Trip Cry of the Loon The Bow Trip, outside of Jackman, Maine, is one of the most well-known, multi-day paddle trips in the state of Maine, or for that matter in the Northeast. Traveled by many individuals each year, it affords the paddler a place to experience the quiet beauty of the woods in northwestern Maine. For many paddlers, the Bow trip begins and ends in the same place, on Attean Pond just west of Jackman. There is a boat landing down the Attean Rd. where a section of the Moose River between Attean and Big Wood Ponds can be reached. For others, including most outfitters, the trip starts further north and to the west on Holeb Pond to avoid a mile-long portage between Attean and Holeb Ponds. Holeb Pond is reached by an hour-long drive on well-used wood roads. Cry of the Loon offers shuttle service to avoid the one-and-a-quarter-mile portage. u -Andy & Leslie McKendry Registered Maine Guides

he Town of Fairfield is located in southern Somerset County in the heart of Maine’s Kennebec Valley, and straddles the Waterville and Skowhegan “metropolitan” areas. The town is bound on the east by the historic Kennebec River and to the west by the Belgrade Lakes region. Fairfield is known as an important crossroads and is the point of intersection of two of the largest transportation corridors in the state, U.S. Route 201 and Interstate 95. Home to many thriving businesses, Fairfield’s 55 square miles also contains large areas of developable land. The town has a substantial urban residential and historic downtown district and several quaint unincorporated villages that contribute to its charm and character. With a local community college and regional high school, an easy commute to anywhere in central Maine, and unrivaled access to outdoor sports and recreation, many families find Fairfield the perfect place to reside. wan Island is a state-owned wildlife management area with abundant wildlife including migrating waterfowl, wild turkeys, white-tailed deer and bald eagles. It is also the only management area where camping is allowed and programs are provided for visitors. It is legally known as Perkins Township and is situated between the towns of Richmond and Dresden. This area is often confused with Swan’s Island, which is located in the Atlantic Ocean, five miles southwest of Mount Desert

They are 3-sided lean-tos with shingled roofs and a substantial overhang on the open side of the shelter. Saturday June 22 2013: Butterflies of Maine Saturday July 6, 2013: Falcons and Kestrels Sat. xperience the renaissance of the perfect New England Village. Gardiner is known as Maine’s best kept secret. Summertime is a great time to discover this small bustling city easily accessible from I-95 and I-295. Dine in or take out your lunch to our recently updated Waterfront Park and Marina. Here you may be lucky enough to spot a bald eagle or osprey diving for searun fish, or the illusive sturgeon, a pre-historic fish known for its acrobatic leaps from the river. Gardiner’s brick sidewalks and bright facades invite visitors to take a leisurely stroll and pop in and out of one-of-a-kind shops, explore the historic library with its well known children’s room, or take the self-guided E.A. Robinson Walking Tour. Built in 1864, Johnson Hall is Maine’s oldest operating Opera House. Tour the historic grand hall slated for rehabilitation, or take in a show in the intimate studio theater. Those exploring central Maine by boat can capture a unique perspective of a perfectly balanced natural and built environment on the Kennebec River. Those who put in at our boat launch can make an easy day journey north to Augusta or south to Bath. Cruising ocean vessels will have a unique experience moving from salt to fresh water as they steam up the historic, unspoiled waterway. The Kennebec River Rail Trail is a great way to explore the riverfront communities of Gardiner, Farmingdale, Hallowell and Augusta along a 6.5 mile paved meandering path. Cast to rising sea-run brown trout in the pools and rapids of Cobbossee Stream as it cascades toward the Kennebec River in downtown Gardiner, or catch striped bass as they migrate up stream along the boardwalk. Alternatively, Cobbossee Lake is a great fishery for many freshwater species. Whatever outdoor enthusiasm brings you to Gardiner, you will find friendly hosts and a full service community awaiting your visit and your inevitable return! u

In 2013, Dragon Disc Golf will open its latest design, a 27-hole course on the Topsham Fairgrounds in Topsham. One of the ways in which Dragon Disc Golf is furthering the growth of the sport is by offering instruction to new players, as well as offering tournaments that range from beginner-oriented instructional events to large Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) events, which draw skilled players from all over the northeastern US.u

nown as the “prettiest village in Maine,” Wiscasset was settled in 1663 on the banks of the Sheepscot River. Due to its deep harbor, Wiscasset was once the largest working harbor east of Boston as a bustling shipbuilding center and lumber port. Today, the harbor is home to local fishermen and recreational boaters and the final resting place since 1932 for the four-masted schooners the Hesper and the Luther Little, whose remains are currently being salvaged. Visitors to Wiscasset can stroll the pleasant brick sidewalks and find many antique shops, art galleries, fine stores and restaurants. Other attractions include handsome sea captains’ homes, the Powder House (1812), the Lincoln County Courthouse (1824), Castle Tucker (1807), the old Lincoln County Jail (1809), and the Customs House (1870). If you haven’t seen Wiscasset Village’s wonderful sunken garden opposite the Nickels-Sortwell House—take an extra few minutes and enjoy its beauty. u

OPEN YEAR-ROUND

What are you looking for?

There’s a warm welcome waiting for you ... A truly quaint and beautiful Maine village, Damariscotta is the gateway to the Pemaquid/Bristol peninsula. The area is rich in history; the town’s first recorded deed is dated 1625. In the spring, alewives gather to spawn at the Damariscotta waterfalls. Damariscotta serves as the shopping and financial center for surrounding communities, and is the site of many fine homes. Its attractive Main Street boasts numerous stores, shops and restaurants. The Chapman-Hall House, built in 1754, features an herb garden and rose bushes dating back to the 18th century. Along the edge of the Damariscotta River are some three acres of oyster shells, left in great mounds by Indians during countless ancient summers. Artifacts have been found among the shells to substantiate the theory that this was a popular spot for many different Maine Indian tribes through the centuries. Some of the shell heaps run as deep as 30 feet. The Damariscotta Region offers unrivaled opportunities for all. u www.schoonerlandingmaine.com

Climb aboard the vintage-looking Oli’s Trolley for a narrated sightseeing tour of Acadia National Park. It’s a great way to hear the history and see the sights, including mansions, rock formations, Frenchman Bay, Paradise Hill and Cadillac Mountain. Take to the water and discover the flora and fauna of the west side of Mount Desert Island. Through kayak circumnavigation, experience the beauty “off the beaten path” with a 4-hour tour lead by a Maine Guide from National Park Sea Kayak Tours. Want to feel the wind in your hair and taste the sea spray? You can do this and get up close to the marine life of Frenchman Bay when you set sail on the historic Margaret Todd, a 4-masted schooner. At the end of the day, plan to stay at the Quimby House Inn and Spa in Bar Harbor, where you’ll be enveloped in an atmosphere of warmth, comfort and relaxation. Enjoy a massage and come away feeling fully rejuvenated.

o climb a rock! Explore the beauty of the coast of Maine from a vertical vantage point. If you have never rock climbed, it may be the highlight of your vacation. Here are answers to some common questions. Can I Do It? Can my family do it? Virtually anyone can rock climb. The guides at Acadia Mountain Guides say, “If you can climb a step ladder, you can climb.” It’s a great activity for an individual, couple, family or group that requires only a moderate level of fitness. How old do I have to be? Am I too old? There are no age limitations. Dick Chasse, a senior guide at Acadia Mountain Guides, has guided clients from age four to eighty-one. Is it safe? Like driving a car, climbing carries some level of risk. Rock climbing is not an extreme sport. Professional guides focus on minimizing your risks and each year thousands of people like you climb safely on the rocks for the first time. Acadia Mountain Guides outfits you with all needed safety gear such as helmets and harnesses, and provides you with expert instruction that guides you every step of the way. Who should I climb with? In Maine, Acadia Mountain Guides has a long history of providing great instruction. They are accredited by the American Mountain Guides Association and the Professional Climbing Instructors Association. Under the same ownership since opening in 1993, AMG is led by internationally licensed IFMGA guide Jon Tierney. Jon is one of 80 US guides to achieve the IFMGA award, signifying the pinnacle of achievement for guides. The guides who work for Jon say, “He has been at the forefront of guide education for over two decades.” They appreciate his mentorship, attention to detail, and desire to constantly improve the delivery and safety of climbing instruction. You will too. u

or more than half a century, the Hanscoms have been harvesting wild blueberries from their barrens. In mid-August, both locals and visitors alike, flock to Hanscom Ridge Road, Marshfield, to treat themselves to a great downeast summer tradition. In addition to their summer blueberry treats, they pioneered the development of balsam fir holiday products in downeast Maine. Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, centerpieces and other specialty holiday creations are among the natural Maine products that the Hanscoms have shipped to brighten the holiday seasons of thousands of families across America. Early November sees the beginning of the process of harvesting the finest tip ends of the balsam fir branches. The freezing nights in downeast Maine at this time of year are the perfect ingredient to slow down sap flow, allowing the needles to form a strong bond with the branches. Next comes the creative process. In the midst of the glorious fragrance of the newly cut balsam fir, creative artists at Flo’s Wreaths put their talents into the development of each holiday product. Their special storage methods assure that the fresh smell of the Maine woods lasts for months. During November and early December, they ship their creative holiday products daily to thousands of retail customers across the country. u www.activitymaine.com

The past is alive and well in Eastport In 1818, when America was a young nation led by its 5th President, James Monroe, Samuel B. Wadsworth, a Portland native and the son of Revolutionary War General Peleg Wadsworth, saw an opportunity to launch a ship chandler business in the busy port city of Eastport. At the time, both the whaling and shipbuilding industries were booming. His entrepreneurship was exactly perfect for the time and he knew that he could meet all his customers’ needs by supplying hardware, harpoons, deadeyes, canvas, alcohol, tobacco and everything else required for rigging, operating and provisioning a ship. While the original business site suffered through several fires and storms, the Groundhog Day Gale of 1976 completely devastated the facility. u

O

n January 22, 1964, The Roosevelt International Park was established by an agreement signed by Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. On August 20, 1964, the first ladies of the two countries opened the only international park in the world as a unique memorial to the close relationship between the people of the two nations. Both governments wished to honor the role that Franklin Delano Roosevelt had played in their mutual histories, as well as the special relationship that FDR had with his beloved island. While the summer home of the late president remains the centerpiece of the park, beautiful gardens and 2,800 acres of natural beauty complete with scenic vistas, hiking and driving trails provide additional visitor experiences. Another popular event on a first come, first served basis is Tea with Eleanor. There are two seating daily at 11am (ADT)/10am (EDT) and at 3pm (ADT)/2pm(EDT). Back by popular demand are complimentary walking tours of the estate with on-site presentations of seashore and bog ecology by staff, weather permitting. The Roosevelt cottage opens on the Saturday following Victoria Day (Sat. prior to Memorial Day) through Canadian Thanksgiving (U.S. Columbus Day) 10am -6pm(ADT). The park’s visitor center remains open through October 31st to accommodate fall visitors. The visitor center offers interpretive displays; a short introductory video and a selection of memorabilia items. u

A Salute To The Queen City

A

s early as the 1500s, when David Ingram sailed up the Penobscot River, explorers believed the region was extraordinary. Some thought that the area was possibly Norumbega–the lost City of Gold. Samuel de Champlain attempted to find the gold, but settled for a lucrative fur trade with the Indians. Lumber was king in Bangor during the city’s early history. River drivers ran logs, harvested in Maine woods, down the Penobscot River to the many mills that banked Bangor’s waterfront. By the late 1800s, Bangor was the busiest seaport on the East Coast, shipping lumber to Europe and other parts of the United States. Bangor has been the home to many national luminaries, including President Abraham Lincoln’s vice president, Hannibal Hamlin, as well as such contemporary authors as Stephen King and Pulitzer Price-winning playwright Owen Davis. u Rae Ann Rice, Home Mortgage Specialist with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage of Bangor has been assisting folks for nearly a decade through the process of purchasing or refinancing of their home. Wilderness Expeditions & The Birches Resort

T

he Birches Resort was built during the 1930s on the legendary Moosehead Lake as a fishing and hunting lodge. Summer 2013, marks the 44th season that The Birches and Wilderness Expeditions have been operated by the Willard family. If you enjoy outdoor activities, the Wilderness Expeditions and Birches Resort are a perfect match for this summer’s fun. Here you can canoe, kayak, mountain bike, fish and sample a number of adventurous activities, including a family rafting adventure. You can take a float plane trip to view area wildlife and scenery or fly to a remote lake or pond for a day of fishing, canoeing or sea kayaking. Special paddle trips are available to remote and heavily wooded areas to spy on moose, red-winged blackbirds, blue herons, beaver and otter. These are but a few of the adventures you can select from the resort’s full menu of outdoor activities. There is certainly something for everyone to enjoy here. Do not leave home without your camera as you will want to capture all of your outdoor experiences on film, especially the photos of your moose safari. Excellent accommodation choices and fine dining make the Wilderness Expeditions & The Birches Resort the perfect destination for your 2013 get away. F

or just short of a century, Maynard’s In Maine has provided their guests with outstanding wilderness experiences in addition to excellent bungalow style cabin accommodations and great dining with wholesome fresh farm foods prepared to perfection. The Moosehead area offers outstanding landlocked salmon, trout and togue fishing. Recently, Billy Maynard landed a 29.67 lb togue on Moosehead Lake measuring 41” long. His huge catch beats the old Moosehead Lake record set in 1961 of a 28 pound 12 ounce togue. The area’s large, pristine forests provide excellent cover for deer, bear and small game and make it an outstanding hunting region. Here guests at Maynard’s will find a real pearl in the North Woods. The Great Depression followed by WW II ended the “gilded age of tourism for the area. By the mid -1950s, the legendary Moosehead Lake, which stands as the center piece of this pristine section of Maine, had enjoyed a rebirth as a vacation destination for a new group of young American families. u
