The event included an expo with displays about the group’s different “houses” and involvement with other community groups and activities, such as: the Senior Center, the police department, the elementary schools, environmental causes and many more. “Upbeat is a communitybased organization and we offer different programs to try to help, and use what we have, to offer assistance wherever its needed,” said Caitlyn Budnick, also a BHS senior and peer leader. Seniors who participate in Upbeat take a pledge not to use drugs or alcohol and they carry that message to other grade levels. “We serve as a role model for younger kids,”

Caitlyn said, and provide assistance with drug and alcohol awareness throughout the school district. Nick Crenella, another senior and peer leader, said the program gives participants a chance to “grow,
learn leadership skills, team-building, public speaking and how to facilitate.” Training weekends give students a chance to build those skills, he said. See Upbeat, page 19
