CPR/AED Certification Training For Staff

BERKELEY HALL

Charity Cup

The 2016 Charity Cup will be held on Monday, May 30, 2016 starting with a golf tournament and concluding with a cookout dinner and auction. This is a terrific way for Berkeley Hall members to support local charities. In 2015, thanks to your participation we provided grants to 17 local charities totaling $136,000. Highlighted below are two of our 2015-2016 charities that are making a difference in our community.

The Bluffton Fire Department offers local area residents certified training courses in CPR and AED. The program is conducted by certified instructors from the American Heart Association. In March, staff employees at Berkeley Hall successfully completed this certified training in such life saving techniques. The Heart Saver CPR /AED Training Program provided instruction on how to recognize and treat cardiac arrest and choking for adult, child and infant victims. Students also learned how and when to use an AED (automated external defibrillator). Our sincere appreciation to the Bluffton Fire Department for conducting this certification training program for our staff.

Heroes on Horseback works with the Special Olympics program to serve most of the special education students in the Beaufort county school district with therapeutic horseback riding, natural horsemanship, and equine-inspired arts and crafts, providing the special needs child with a combination of physical, emotional, and intellectual empowerment. The BHCF grant will be used to provide full tuition assistance to 17 special needs children. Boys and Girls Club of Bluffton will support two projects. First, “Explorers: Learning for Life” which provides mentorship activities led by the Bluffton Police Department, enhances teens’ life skills, builds their character and leadership skills while exposing teens to career opportunities in law enforcement. Second, the grant supports a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Program with a technology-enabled training and mentoring environment to strengthen STEM skills in teens during after-school and summer venues. Please consider participating again this year. Entry forms may be picked up at the front desk in the Golf Shop. The deadline for golf, party and sponsorship participation is May 17, 2016.

Parade of Homes In support of the Hilton Head Association of Home Builders, the Berkeley Hall Club participated in their Annual Parade of Homes that was held Friday, March 18th through Sunday, March 20th. All of the Realtors with listings in the community were invited to open their homes for public inspection during this 3-day Open House Tour. In total, 341 vehicles passed through the Main Gate on route to the homes that were open for viewing.

Forbes Names Bluffton to List of Top Retirement Destinations Forbes Magazine recently named Bluffton “One of the Nation’s Top 25 Places To Retire.” There are a host of factors that go into the magazine’s rankings, but weather was a major component, and of course, financial factors playing a big part in where people choose to retire. The measurements compared such factors as lower taxes, a lower cost of living and quality of life, metrics such as crime rate and doctors per capita. Despite a heavy reliance on data and metrics, their rankings were not completely quantitative. The magazine also named art, culture, nature, architecture and walkability as factors that play a role in determining which towns make the cut. Bluffton was the only South Carolina town named to the list with 14 of the top 25 retirement destinations located in the Southeast. On top of everything else, we know that Bluffton just has a certain charm to it!

ARB Update

by Wendy Wagner, ARB Administrator

New home construction continues to be strong during the first 4-months and this pace is expected to continue throughout the year. Thirteen homes are currently under construction with four plans for new construction pending approval from the ARB. Currently, there are 300 completed homes which represents a 54.2% buildout of the community. Now that Spring has arrived, thoughts for many of our residents have turned to sprucing up the exterior of their homes. Approval is not required from the ARB for minor landscape changes in existing beds. Foundation plants are required to be evergreens and provide a minimum of 30 in height at installation. Homes with higher foundations are required to screen 50% of the foundation height. Beds on the front and rear of a home are required to have two rows of plant material. As landscaping matures, plants and grasses need to be replaced from time to time due to damage from disease, infestation or cold damage. If a plant should die and needs to be replaced a similar plant should be used. All service yards should also be screened with a evergreen plants that are a minimum 15 gallon size.

Member Directory As we strive to continuously improve the Berkeley Hall Experience for our Members we are asking you to update your information in the directory on our website. Please log into your account at www.berkeleyhallclub.com and ensure all information is up to date. Should you need to change any of your information, please contact Jennifer Wheeler at 843.815.8953 or jwheeler@berkeleyhallclub. com. Updating your information will ensure you receive all communications sent from the club. We also encourage you to add a profile picture which may be forwarded to Jennier as well. Please note, the picture must be sent in JPEG format. If you don’t have a picture, please stop by the Concierge desk and we will be happy to snap a picture of you and add it to the website!

Sod replacement does not require approval, but lots that are contiguous to the golf course are limited to Fescue, Zoysia or Centipede. Grasses that are not permitted adjacent to the golf course are St. Augustine and Bahia. All bare areas (except for the lawn and approved natural areas) must be mulched and weeded. Major renovations and redesign to your landscape does require ARB approval. Many times the upkeep of mailboxes can get overlooked. The color for the mailbox post is Charleston Green. The paint is sold locally at Sherwin Williams, but is only sold by the gallon. The Club is happy to perform this maintenance for you. The charge for painting the mailbox post is $18. The mailboxes cannot be painted and should be replaced if rusted or worn. Mailboxes should be purchased only through the ARB. The cost for a new mailbox and lettering is $50. If you are in need of painting and a replacement mailbox, both can be done for only $68. Please contact me with any questions you made have regarding your home landscaping or the need to repair of your mailbox. I can be reached at 843.815.8443 or email wwagner@berkeleyhallclub.com.

Berkeley Hall Launches New Real Estate Website On May 1, the club will launch a new Real Estate website. The site was constructed at the request of the realtor community and will replace our current HHMLSdriven site. The new technology offers realtors who have property listings in the community the control and responsibility to manage all of the details of their listings directly. This arrangement helps ensure that any inquiry made on a particular property will be directed to the appropriate listing agent. Our dedicated real estate site is a popular source of information for interested prospects to receive detailed information on individual listings throughout the community.

Barber Services Available in the Clubhouse Ken Browning offers haircuts for both men and women every Friday and Saturday in the Clubhouse locker rooms. His hours are every Friday from 2:30-4:30pm and on Saturdays from 11:30 to 2:30pm. For special appointments, please call 912-441-6855.

Javier the Tailor Javier is in the clubhouse every Saturday morning between the hours of 9:30-11am to tailor clothing for our Members. He will take your measurements and return the following Saturday morning to deliver your garments. No appointments are necessary.

Need a Document Notarized? Myla Mitchell, Assistant Controller, (843.815.8414) and Wendy Wagner, ARB Administrator (843.815.8443) are commissioned by the State of SC to perform this function. They offer their services to our Members free of charge.

Book Club

Monday, May 2 at 3pm, Ladies’ Locker Room The Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende Named one of the most anticipated novels of the year by New York Magazine, The Wall Street, The New York Times and more, this internationally bestselling author Isabel Allende, an exquisitely crafted love story and multigenerational epic that sweeps from San Francisco in the present-day to Poland and the United States during the Second World War. In 1939, as Poland falls under the shadow of the Nazis, young Alma Belasco’s parents send her away to live in safety with an aunt and uncle in their opulent mansion in San Francisco. There, as the rest of the world goes to war, she encounters Ichimei Fukuda, the quiet and gentle son of the family’s Japanese gardener. Unnoticed by those around them, a tender love affair begins to blossom. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the two are cruelly pulled apart as Ichimei and his family—like thousands of other Japanese Americans—are declared enemies and forcibly relocated to internment camps run by the United States government. Throughout their lifetimes, Alma and Ichimei reunite again and again, but theirs is a love that they are forever forced to hide from the world. Sweeping through time and spanning generations and continents, The Japanese Lover explores questions of identity, abandonment, redemption, and the unknowable impact of fate on our lives. The Japanese Lover is a profoundly moving tribute to the constancy of the human heart in a world of unceasing change. Review: Amazon.com

Monday, June 6 at 3pm, Ladies’ Locker Room The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters The New York Times bestselling novel that has been called “a tour de force” (Wall Street Journal), “unputdownable” (The Washington Post), “a delicious hothouse of a novel” (USA Today), “seductive” (Vanity Fair), “Superb, bewitching…Forget about Fifty Shades of Grey; this novel is one of the most sensual you will ever read, and all without sacrificing either good taste or a “G” rating” – NPR It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned; the out-of-work and the hungry are demanding change. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa—a large, silent house now bereft of brothers, husband, and even servants—life is about to be transformed as impoverished widow Mrs. Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers. With the arrival of Lilian and Leonard Barber, a modern young couple of the “clerk class,” the routines of the house will be shaken up in unexpected ways. Little do the Wrays know just how profoundly their new tenants will alter the course of Frances’s life—or, as passions mount and frustration gathers, how farreaching, and how devastating, the disturbances will be. One of the greatest writers of historical fiction, and here she has delivered again. Review: New York Times For further information concerning the Ladies Book Club, please contact Wendy Hansen at hansenwendyj@gmail.com.

G GOLF

The Golf Corner

Adam Kushner, Director of Golf

In early March, the Carolina Blue skies finally broke through and we have been able to enjoy a beautiful spring. We have had a busy spring season as many of our members were eager to dust off the golf clubs and shake off the cabin fever. I would like to thank all of the members that have supported our golf events and hope that we will get a great turnout for the Member-Member on May 12-14. Just a reminder to all of our members that Men’s Day will continue throughout the spring and summer on Wednesday mornings, and Ladies’ Day will be on Thursday mornings. One of my favorite parts about this time of year is all of the new merchandise which brightens up the Golf Shop. Throughout the season, we will be receiving the latest men’s and ladie’s merchandise from vendors all over the world. We hope that all of our members will find the apparel that will fit their taste. If there is something that you would like that is not in stock, please do not hesitate to ask and we will do our best to locate it for you.

Reciprocal Program We are still gathering all of the details about the reciprocal program for the summer of 2016. Most clubs will be starting their programs on May 31 and running the reciprocals until September 15th. Please contact the Golf Shop with any questions, and we will be happy to help you book your tee times this summer. Although Kellie Dippel was only at Berkeley Hall for a short time, she made a lasting impact and I know many of us will miss her greatly. Kellie has taken an Assistant Professional position at Charlotte Country Club. We wish Kellie the best in her new endeavor and hope that she will come back to visit whenever time permits. At the beginning of June, Greg Hayes will be joining us from The Country Club of North Carolina. Greg is in his fourth season at CCNC and before that he worked at Chapel Hill Country Club and Wade Hampton Golf Club. Greg has been running the Ladies’ Golf Program at CCNC for the past two years and has also gained valuable experience in teaching and club-fitting. We look forward to welcoming Greg to our team soon.

Meet Sophia Guo

Berkeley Hall’s Youngest Aspiring Professional Sophia Guo was a nationally ranked gymnast in her Chinese homeland before turning to golf, and today, she is Berkeley Hall’s youngest Aspiring professional at the age of 15. This year at the Masters she was among 80 competitors in the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals held at Augusta National to begin Master’s Sophia Guo week. Thousands of entrants began their quest to qualify for the event at more than 200 sites across the country. They had to advance through 3 stages of qualifying to earn the honor of showcasing their skills in the shadow of the famed Augusta National clubhouse. The competition was broadcast live by Golf Channel “For hundreds of thousands of people”, said Nick Faldo “just stepping inside the gates of Augusta National is special. Sophia is a natural athlete who just as easily could have had Olympic aspirations in a different sport. Growing up outside of Shanghai, she showed enough promise as a gymnast to become part of the feeder system to China’s powerful program. However, as a 4th grader her father Jianhui (Jim) brought her to a practice range and put a borrowed club in her hands. That’s when Sophia was hooked and asked to switch from gymnastics to golf. She ended up placing fifth overall in her 14-15 year old division at Augusta, just a half-point out of joining in a tie for 3rd. She was in third place heading into the final segment just 3 points from the lead, but her 30-foot putt rolled nearly 5-feet past the cup. Regardless of whether there was a trophy to be presented to the winner, the experience of competing at Augusta National was her real reward. She returned home with plenty of memories, including the opportunity to meet many of the stars on the PGA and LPGA Tour.

Post Shot Reaction...How It Shapes Your Round by Krista Dunton, Senior Instructor

This is the second part of a four part series on how to stay in the present during a round of golf, and focus on the shot at hand. I call it the 4 R’s...Routine, Reaction, Relax and Refocus. Krista Dunton

routine hit ball

refocus

Results

react

relax In the routine part, we discussed think box and the importance of making a decision in that area. Then moving into the play box not to use the cognitive part of your brain by thinking, but rather using your sensory motor skills. A player must feel the swing, visualize the trajectory and focus on balance, tempo and grip pressure. Chose something that relates to your senses rather than having a bunch of swing thoughts. This is how to best achieve a Performance State in any sport including golf. Now let’s consider your reaction to a shot and how you process it to memory. After you hit a shot you will automatically react to the outcome either positive, negative or neutral. Two of these reactions will help you to perform and one will hurt. I’m sure you guessed it correct and here’s why. When you react positive or neutral to a shot your body produces the hormone called DHEA, which is a feel good hormone. At varying levels it takes your mood into interested, engaged, happy, and elation. All great states to play good golf. On the other end of the spectrum, when we react negatively to a shot your body produces cortisol. Varying amounts of cortisol in your system will on anxiety, frustration, anger, rage. If too much cortisol is in your body it may take up to 6 hours to eliminate it and results in a downward spiral in your performance. When playing on the course, the best way to react to a good or great shot to anchor it. Have something you do each time to reinforce that moment. By expressing positive emotion it gets stored in your memory for future reference. So you must reinforce the good shots rather than the bad! Do not put emotional attachment to your bad shots, which results in the bad shots continuing to reoccurring. As humans, we have a 3-1 negative bias, so we have to overload our memory with positive energy.

14

When you do have a bad shot here are two ways you can react: 1) Make an objective statement and be neutral.....”the ball is in the hazard” or “I hit the ball fat”. Simply state the fact without expressing emotion thus blocking out the cortisol. 2) Replay the swing you just made in your mind with the swing you wanted. This way you walk away remembering the good swing. Often, you will observe tour players replaying their swing when they are not satisfied with their last shot.

SOME TIPS FROM VISION54 • Remember to control how you react to a shot. • Storing positive memories is the mechanic of confidence • Store shots all of your good shots for the enemy of excellence is perfection. • The smart choices of reacting are neutral /factual or positive/happy Below are some on course exercises from Vision 54 to help you with your post shot reaction and storage of memory. 1) Hit 20 different golf shots while being disciplined to remain neutral/objective or happy/positive in your post-shot reactions. 2) When practicing, follow each shot you did not like by something aloud that is objective, neutral or simply factual about the shot. 3) After each good shot you hit spend 15 extra seconds feeling pleased about it. 4) Ask a friend to give feedback on body language and facial expressions of your post -shot reactions. 5) Find a way to get your mood neutral or happy by humming a song or enjoying the landscape 6) Find an anchor for your good shots such as a fist pump or tip of your hat. 7) Hit 10 good or good enough shots and feel a positive emotion. 8) After a round go through your best 10 shots or processes and feel good about it and share the good shots instead of talking about the bad shots! Good luck with this! Partner up and have fun observing and listening to each other’s reaction, I think you will learn a lot about yourself! Feel free to send me some feedback kdunton@me.com. Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriot of Vision54 will be at Berkeley Hall, May 19 & 20. (details on pg. 16 )

Hole #5 ~ North Course Preparations for this year’s Players Amateur

Golf & Community Maintenance by Chris Young, Director of Golf Course Maintenance

Update on the South Course Bunker Renovation

New 419 Bermudagrass

The final phase of installing the “Better Billy Bunkers” on the green side bunkers of the South Course will be completed ahead of schedule. We have now completed the green side bunkers on holes #15 & #17 South Billy Bunker Installation #17 which has freed up additional staff to achieve our goal of completing two fairway aerifications on the South Course this year. Those aerifications are scheduled for May 2026 and July 13-25, 2016. By completing work on these two bunkers earlier than scheduled, the remaining green side bunkers on holes #7, #9, & #16 will also be completed by the end of the summer.

The practice tees were sodded in the summer of 2015 with 419 Bermudagrass and has performed exceptionally well this spring. The grass has grown in much denser and fuller than the Tift Sport Bermuda that had been previously used on the practice tees. We stopped over-seeding the tee boxes with rye grass in March and since then have observed the 419 Bermudagrass filling all of the divots. Verticutting and top-dressing the 419 Bermudagrass begins in May and will continue throughout the growing season.

Pre-emergent herbicide application We’re pleased to announce that the pre-emergent application that was scheduled for the spring on the South Course was completed on schedule. You may ask why this is cause for celebration. Well as you Pre-emergent South Course may recall, the El Nino weather pattern produced heavy rains across the Southeastern states this this past winter which caused us to delay our scheduled pre-emergent application by two months on both courses. This resulted in an extended period of time when there was no barrier in the soil to prevent weed seeds from germinating. As a result, unsightly weeds began to flourish and remained on the fairways throughout the winter, and into the spring. Having the ability to apply the pre-emergent at the proper time this spring will control 95% of weeds that would otherwise have appeared this summer. A pre-emergent herbicide will be applied to the North Course as we are aerifying the course April 25-May 3.

Injured Bald Eagle at Berkeley Hall The last couple of months the Golf Maintenance Department and Community Service Department have received phone calls from our Members who reported the sighting of an injured Bald Eagle. Although our managers responded to each report, they were Injured Bald Eagle never able to catch the bird to repair its injury. Kayne Hoeht our Director of Community Service was in contact with the Department of Natural Resource (DNR) to report the injury, however they would only dispatch an official from their office if the injured Bald Eagle was either caught or contained to a specific area. Finally, on March 9th, we were able to catch the injured bird and turn it over to the DNR for treatment.

Biannual Flower Rotation by Kayne Hoecht, Director of Community Services The last two weeks of April are the time we schedule our biannual flower rotation. By this time each Spring our flower beds need to be refreshed, since the violas have experienced the worst of winter by suffering damage caused by disease, insects and deer. This flower rotation gives us an opportunity to install some of the newest plant species and top performing flowers that are best suited for our climate. From past experiences, there is always a long list of plants to select from, but we can narrow the list down to approximately twenty varieties that will create an ideal assortment of colorful flowers. Our final selection was based on the uniqueness of each variety, their colors, disease susceptibility, resistance to deer, and level of general maintenance. The final selections were ordered through our wholesaler in January who then began their custom growing process. They will be grown to specifications, according to our desired pot size and date of installation. This year, you will see many new varieties on property including; Valient Vinca, Mojave Purslane, Dragons Breath Celosia, Meteor Shower Verbena, and Flame Thrower Coleus. It will present an exciting array of flowers with brilliant colors that we hope you enjoy.

Pickle-Ball Is Coming To The Fitness Center by Bryan Coker, Certified Personal Trainer

Are you looking for a fun way to compete with your friends and family, enjoy tennis but feel your knees can’t handle the running, then you may want to try Pickle-ball? Pickle-balll® happens to be the fastest growing sport in the country and we are excited to announce that a court is being installed at the Fitness Center. Members have expressed an interest in the game, so we decided we would give them what they have asked for. The lines on the court will be stripped over the existing basketball court without interfering with basketball play. The Pickle-ball net is portable, so it can easily be set up for a game and then moved aside for basketball. Paddles and balls will be provided to players by our Fitness Attendant at the front desk at no charge. If you are unfamiliar with the game, it is traditionally played on a badminton-sized court with special Pickle-ball®paddles, made of wood or high-tech aerospace materials. The ball used is similar to a whiffle ball, but slightly smaller. The lower net and whiffle ball allow the game to be accessible to people of all ages and abilities, while still allowing more competitive players to test their mettle.

Pickle-ball is played on a badminton-sized court: 20’ x 44.’ The ball is served diagonally (starting with the right-hand service-square), and points can only be scored by the side that serves. Players on each side must let the ball bounce once before volleys are allowed, and there is a seven-foot no-volley zone on each side of the net, to prevent “spiking.” The server continues to serve, alternating service courts, until he or she faults. The first side scoring eleven points and leading by at least two points wins. Pickle-balll® can be played with singles or doubles. Serves are to be made diagonally, starting with the right-hand service-square and alternating each serve. The serve must clear the seven-foot non-volley-zone in front of the net and land in the diagonal service court. Serves should always be done underhand with the paddle below the waist, and the server must keep both feet behind the back line when serving. The ball should be hit into the air without being bounced. The serving side will continue to serve until the there is a fault on the service, at which point the service will be given to the opposing side. For more information, including official rules and/or any questions you may have, please come see us at the spa and fitness center and we would be glad to help! And by the way, Derek and I plan on getting really good at Pickle-ball if there are any challengers out there!

Migration of Local Wildlife Back to the Salt Marches With the return of sunny skies and warm water temperatures, we will witness more and more wildlife activity in the Okatie River and surrounding Salt Marsh. Migratory birds that wintered here are returning north and the waders are out in full force. You may notice, especially in the evening, that the trees lining the river banks and fresh water lagoons are nearly overflowing with nesting herons and egrets. Hatchlings will begin to appear in the next few weeks and take flight in the early weeks of summer. If you are on the water, the real treat may be watching the dolphins. They are everywhere! The quiet and remote upper reaches of the Okatie River are an ideal playground for them. Members of the Cetacean family, the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin, can reach lengths of between 7 and 12 feet and may live for 30 years. Each dolphin has a distinctly individual color and personality. Locals will recognize resident dolphins by the shape of their dorsal fin and sometimes assign them nicknames such as Hook and Stubby. Mating most often occurs in the spring, and the female will carry that single baby for a full year. Delivery is done tail first in a watery birth place. Dolphin calves will remain with the mother or female group for nearly 2 years, learning how to fish and communicate. Social behaviors are taught to the young during this time as well. Speaking of social behaviors, it is not unusual to get up close and personal with a dolphin as you are enjoying a kayak tour or boat cruise. You will watch them play, feed and frolic just several feet from your boat. Guided 2-hour kayak nature tours are scheduled every Monday from 9-11am and Fridays from 4 to 6pm. These tours are led by Captain Eric Burns, who is a trained interpretive naturalist. Remember to dress in layers and bring along your binoculars.
