Larkspur Through the Eyes of an Artist Paintings by Bryn Craig

When one thinks about Larkspur, they think of the iconic Lark Theater sign as they enter downtown, a testament to the spirit of the town that “saved” the single screen, art deco theater, donating labor and funds to convert the Theater to non-profit status under the leadership of the late Bernice Baeza. There is the Left Bank, a popular French restaurant just down the street, where people, often with their dogs, can be seen on the patio from morning to night. Other important icons of Larkspur include the Silver Peso bar, as well as the Lark Creek Inn, Ristorante Fabrizio, Rulli, and the active gathering place Picco. Each establishment makes up the unique personality of Larkspur, a little gem of Marin County. As a painter, Bryn Craig captures these special qualities with his paint brush. Bryn states, “I am attracted to older, unspoiled and nostalgic subjects that have retained the City of Larkspur’s precious character. I’ve painted the Lark Theater in oils and watercolors, during the day and night, during different seasons. Further along Magnolia, the Silver Peso, a favorite local bar, has inspired a dozen more paintings. The Rainbow Market sign which tops the building housing Gallery Bergelli, The Blue Rock Inn sign, and The Lark Creek Inn, now known as the Lark Creek Tavern, City Hall, St. Patrick’s Church, have all provided me with rich material.” Craig also finds inspiration in other locations throughout Larkspur. He states, “I also like to investigate the beauty of Larkspur that is not as well-known as the Lark Theater, or Silver Peso. A nondescript apartment building that glows warmly on a dark night, a table full of hats at the annual “Food and Flower Festival,” or a cozy house built in 1905 with enormous hydrangea bushes are more examples of what I love about this town. “ Together, these works represent Larkspur as a whole, highlighting the aspects of the iconic town. Craig works from photographs of the area, and although his style is realistic, it is far from photo realism. “I take from the photo whatever I feel works toward the mood I am trying to convey, and the paintings emerge, with a life of their own. “ The artist’s process leaves the viewer with a deeper sense that they are experiencing a place with personality, depth, and a rich history. © 2013 Gallery Bergelli.
