WWW.BENWICK.COM By Rob Taylor

We all pretty well know that computing started in earnest in the 60’s with the advent of the International Business Machines computer. Around this time the majority of computers were huge affairs filling rooms with whirring, clunking pieces of equipment that used devices called valves and such. IBM revolutionised this idea with their small unit that comprised a keyboard, TV type monitor and a box that it could stand on. This concept became the grounding for computing as we know it today. During the eighties Microsoft went into being two big giants are twenty first century, games platforms

and nineties software companies such as Apple Macintosh and battle to develop a software platform for the IBM clones that were manufactured in big numbers in the Far East. To this day those still fighting each other for supremacy in software and, into the hardware, with Microsoft developing amongst other things, and Apple with the iPod.

The Internet didn’t really take off until the early nineties when Netscape brought out its Internet Browser. Since then companies like Microsoft, Mozilla and Opera have all developed their own browsers and you are spoilt for choice in how you surf the web. It was in the late nineties that people began to really see the worth of the Internet and Domain Names were being bought at a phenomenal rate. A domain name is the name you give to a web site and is usually included in the address line you type in your browser. They started off as what’s known as dot Com. This refers to the extension at the end of the address in the browser. Com was the first to be set up and businesses, Internet Service Providers and individuals all started buying them. This led to many legal cases where people bought names in the hope that they could sell them to big corporations for large sums of money. Some people got rich, others got stung. Eventually the guys at the Internet decided that the .Coms eventually so they came up with the idea of adding different .co.uk for the United Kingdom and .fr for France and so on. of extensions. In the UK one company bought up as many extension .co.uk as they could back in 1998/99. This meant www.benwick.co.uk was taken and if anybody wanted to Benwick they couldn’t, unless they were prepared to owners.

were going to run out extensions, such as Now there are hundreds UK place names with the that the web address build a local website for purchase it from the

So I made the decision to purchase the Benwick.com domain name and build a website purely for the purpose of letting people all over the world know where we are, what we do and who we are. Since its first airing back in November 1999 the Benwick web site has seen a few changes in layout but the information within has remained pretty much the same with bits added as I can add them. (Cont’d on page 6)

There have been many contributors to the site namely Tom Granger, Ron Broughton, Martin Roney, Matthew Law, Andrew Cade, Dr Colin Barnes, Steve Savage and Linda Ibrom. To them I give many thanks. As the Benwick website can be viewed from anywhere in the world I have received emails from all over the world. People from as far as Anaheim California and New Zealand have sent emails telling me that some of their ancestors came from Benwick and it is so nice to be able to see it in pictures and words. To date the site has had more than six thousand visits which equates to just short of three a day on average. One of those visitors is a film company from New York who are planning to make documentaries of Quirky English villages and they came across www.benwick.com. They liked it so much that they want to send a film crew here to interview the locals, especially those who have interesting stories to tell of the past. The plan is for them to come to Benwick in April and for the programme to be aired on Sky sometime late 2007 or early next year. If any of the readers of the Benwick Bugle would like to be involved with the filming please let me know and I will compile a list for the film crew. So, if you haven’t yet visited the new Benwick web site then log on to www.benwick.com and have a look.

changing the world one gift at a time The Freecycle® philosophy is simple. If you have something around the house, shed, attic or garage that you think might be useful to somebody else then why not give it away for free instead of sending it off to the tip as landfill? The Freecycle Network was started in May 2003 to promote waste reduction in Tucson's downtown and help save desert landscape from being taken over by landfill sites. The Network provides individuals and non-profit organisations an electronic forum to "recycle" unwanted items. One person's trash can truly be another's treasure!

The Freecycle Network™ is made up of many individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them's good people). Membership is free. www.freecycle.com

It has grown fast and there are now almost 4,000 local Freecycle groups in dozens of countries worldwide with a total of over 3 million members.

The Fenland Freecycle group was founded in July 2004 and now has a membership of 1,343 people, being over one percent of Fenland's population. Run by volunteers it is an on line message board, run as a group on www.yahoo.co.uk. People post items they have available to offer freely to others, members will then reply to say that they are interested and the two parties will arrange collection. The main rule is that items must tangibly keep something out of landfill. That said, they should also be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages. Lots of people will, for example upgrade a washing machine, or a fridge, or a video and then dispose of their old one - usually to the tip. Using Freecycle means that they can pass it on to someone else who needs it, simply by sending one email. Even cars and caravans have been offered in the local group. But it's not all big things. A pair of football boots, records, several bags of plant pots and even a pair of waders have all found new homes thanks to the generosity of the members. Bev told us “What Freecycle has made me do is look at any piece of rubbish in my house and think would someone want that...?”

10

Fenland Freecycle also runs what it calls its ‘Cafe’ group. Operating via a Yahoo group aswell, this provides a forum for members to do what they can’t on the main Freecycle group conversation, advice, advertising local services and members businesses, and suchlike.

Yahoo Groups A Yahoo Group is a mailing list run from www.yahoo.com. Yahoo is home to thousands of groups covering just about any subject you can think of. You sign up to a group you are interested in and can then send emails to the group as a whole. You will also receive emails that others have sent to the group. For more information, go to http://groups.yahoo.com. Take a look at the Fenland Freecycle Yahoo Group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fenlandfreecycle, where you can read a little more about the group and also request to join. If you haven’t already registered as a Yahoo Groups member, you will need to do so, but this also is free of charge.

Deron Brown the founder and executive director of The Freecycle Network™, says on the Freecycle website, “We continue to grow at an astronomical rate,...... there are Freecycle groups in over 50 countries. This long list of small acts of kindness is giving shape to what is truly a giving revolution. Not a bad little movement, eh?” As Dave told us, “This system is fantastic. Everyone that I have been in contact with has been really helpful, I would recommend to everyone to sign up and get involved.”

Think globally, recycle locally! Thanks to Louise, Fenland Freecycle Group Owner, for her help and words!!

CHURCHES IN BENWICK By Hannah Taylor, age 11 The Village of Benwick doesn’t have a church at present. There used to be a church in Benwick called St. Mary and it was built in 1854 at a cost of £2,500 by a man called Tuelon. The Church was built using carstone from Snettisham in Norfolk, with a much paler stone being used for the window frames and the corners of the building. It had a western tower that sat at the end of an aisle, a chancel, a nave, a spire - containing a clock and one bell and had seating inside for about 400 people. The Church was partially restored and the spire rebuilt in 1902.

This photo of St Mary’s Church was taken from the far bank of the River Nene

This photo shows the inside of St.Mary’s Church

Unfortunately the Church was declared redundant in 1983 and then had to be demolished due to subsidence in 1985, before it sank into the peat! All was not lost however, as the stained glass window from the St Mary, Benwick was removed and inserted into the vestry at Doddington Church also called St. Mary. There is an inscription on the window which reads “To the Glory of God and in loving memory of our dearly loved son and brother Arthur Leslie G Newton whose life was sacrificed in the Great War 1914 - 1919 R.I.P.", The face of the Church clock was also removed and is now in the museum in March. There is a group called “Friends of Benwick Church” who are raising funds to erect a new ‘ecumenical place of worship’ in the village.

BENWICK ATHLETIC FOOTBALL CLUB Welcome to the latest edition of the Bugle, I have been requested to compose some words on your local football team – Benwick Athletic Football Club. My current role in the club is as a Committee member and also as the Webmaster for www.benwickathletic.co.uk. Personally I, Jon Sharpe, joined the club partway through the current season with my children also playing. As with everyone involved within the club I have been CRB checked, this is paramount in all youth activities these days in order to provide a safe haven for your children, and I also have coaching qualifications in football. This is my first effort at writing for the Bugle about the club so I have attempted to keep it at a factual level in order to build on in later issues. Benwick Athletic FC has seen many changes over the years and this year is no exception. After 20 years of dedicated service its chairman, Kevin Wright, has made the difficult decision to stand down from his duties. Personally I did not know him that well, apart from a few brief encounters, but from the stories and comments I have heard about him, he will be a hard act for someone to follow. Kevin leaves with our best wishes, something that is extended to his family and to his new ventures. With this, the club is continuing in a proactive fashion and has recently seen success in securing a new training team that is managed by Doug Rose and Andy Berridge. This team will be the backbone foundations of next years U6’s and has endearingly been nicknamed the Tiny Tots. As with all the teams we have, the correct level of training and safety is uppermost in our priority and as such James Bradshaw is currently assisting them. James’ current qualifications are held in refereeing and are being advanced to a Level 3 coach, a qualification that will enable the football club to progress further through the FA structure. With the evolvement of this team it is unfortunate that the U18 team has disbanded. In one way this is the loss of a team but what we have seen is effectively a strengthening of other areas due to the commitment and love of football; several players have joined the Senior side whilst the U14 team are now being managed by Greg Hoffman & Teresa Mackenzie. This team has recently been sponsored by ROWELL’S TRANSPORT to whom our utmost gratitude is given, enabling the team to their dazzling blue and yellow strip. The U12’s are also the proud owners of a sparkling new blue & yellow Continental football strip and fitness training equipment courtesy of two generous sponsors, one being SIMON KILBY GROUNDWORKS of Doddington, the other wishing to remain anonymous. Again, without the kindness of people such as these it would be impossible to promote the club as effectively as the boys and now girls do.

22

The girls’ team has been started under the guidance of Danny Levicki and is aimed at encouraging girls between the ages of 9 and 16 to come and join in the fastest growing female sport to date. Success of the England Ladies team and Arsenal Ladies in particular has been a big influence in girls football and with this Benwick Athletic is actively participating. They currently train on Saturdays at Dack Field between 12:30 & 1:30 so if any girls wish to become involved they will be made more than welcome. Another important function of the club is to hold it’s Annual General Meeting; this year’s will be held on April 2nd at 7:30pm in the Benwick Village Hall. It is open to anyone interested in the club and as such we would like to welcome you all there in order to express any concerns, comments or even praise for the club. Enough of my ramblings now, but before I go I would like to thank you for your support in your local football club, both in the past and in the future, as we look towards further success.
