JOIN THE EVENTS by Susanne Nichols Dear Benwickians, Lots happened in the last 2 months, July has seen a hilariously funny Race Night in the pub (read more on page 21), and in August people indulged in loads of ice cream and sweets during their visit at the Benwick Village Fete (more to read on page 26). The Benwick in Bloom team was really nervous these days as they learned the outcome of their hard work for this year’s Benwick in Bloom competition early September. Don’t forget, join them on the 17th of Sep when they announce the outcome and celebrate. And then, finally, our village shop has opened and whilst you hold this edition in your hands, there is the official Opening Party going on. I am hugely excited to see that they offer basically everything one might need. No rushing out to drive to other shops any longer, just a leisurely stroll down the road. Much more convenient! THE SHOP IS OPEN! By now you surely already heard - the shop is open! If you haven’t been in there yet, go, get your shoes on and have a look. The team is super friendly, and they are looking forward to meeting us all, I’m sure.
Opening hours are daily from from 7am - 8pm, so even for those early birds and late shift workers there should be a time to be found to pop in and have a nose. When I was in on Sunday, there was already the first “you have to stock more for Sundays” from a customer. I am sure, it will take the team a few weeks to find out what we all will want to buy, so give them a chance to learn more about us. No need to say that the shop is adding value to our village, to our lifes, and to our property values too. Not to mention the ease of mind when you are in the middle of baking and realise you run out of butter. It is a relief to have our village shop, so a big WELCOME and all the best from surely all Benwickians.

CONCESSIONARY BUS PASS RENEWALS The County Council is aware that over the next eighteen months the amount of renewals of the concessionary bus passes is going to be potentially very high. It is the responsibility of the pass holder to check when their pass is up for renewal and then to contact the County Council to get a new one. In order to aid the pass holder the Passenger Transport Team have set up a new form which allows people to easily renew online. This online form can be found at www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/concessionary. If you have any problems with the online form then you can also call the number on the back of your pass or go to the library who will be able to help. Don’t risk being refused from free travel, check your pass now.

BENWICK LADIES CLUB by Brenda Richards In July we did not have a speaker but kept ourselves occupied with a variety of quiz questions supplied by a number of members. Of course there was also plenty of time to catch up on gossip. Then in August some of us went to Chatteris to The London Glassworks Company for a demonstration on glass blowing.
Our Christmas meeting on Dec, 15th is for our Christmas party. Last but not least our September 15th meeting is a coffee evening in aid of Macmillan nurses when we would like to invite everyone to join us in our fundraising for this worthwhile cause. All meetings are from 7.00 - 9.00 in the Village Hall. Please come along. •

Two days later we held an evening of indoor curling. Both events were very enjoyable.
During a visit to the mental asylum I asked the director “how do you determine whether or not a patient should be institutionalised?” “Well” said the director, “we fill a bath tub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup, and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bath tub”.

FORGET-ME-NOTS by Janet Fountain In July we had a very successful Cheese/Wine and Quiz evening. The ladies in the kitchen did an excellent job and Dennis Clarke was the quiz master and once again put our brains to the test. The winning team were “Make your mind up” and “Benwick babes” received the booby prize. On 20th July sixteen members enjoyed an afternoon visit to Waterside Garden Centre at Baston, near Market Deeping, followed by a delicious cream tea in their air conditioned function room. Considering it was a really hot day this was much appreciated. Our August meeting on the 4th was a games evening. Ernie Fountain won the Curling with Janice Munden receiving the booby. Betty Savage was very lucky on the bingo winning three prizes with several other members receiving a prize. The Harvest Festival was on Thursday, 1st September when Mike Jones conducted a short service after which Dennis Clarke auctioned the produce for club funds.
A Beetle Drive is planned for 6th October when the competition will be any item beginning with the letter P. Our annual bingo which is open to everyone is on Thursday, 3rd November and the Christmas party is on Thursday 1st December. BENWICK IN BLOOM by Patricia Cuthbert B.I.B. have completed the Anglia in Bloom Competition, we now await the results to see what we have achieved, which should be by early September. We have a number of people to thank for their support and help over the last months.
Enormous thanks to all the generous villagers that donated so many lovely items for our fund raising table top sales, a number of which we carry out over the year, without your kind generosity we would find it difficult to raise funds for plants etc, so please keep your gifts coming. A huge thank you to Mr & Mrs Taylor for their donation of a strimmer, which is of immeasurable use to us and has already seen lots of service around the village.
Our grateful thanks to Mr. Dennis White for his generous gift of two large wooden planters for Benwick Primary School, also a large number of bricks for the edging to the play park borders. All the number of helpers that assisted us to empty all the tubs around the village of pansies and bulbs, to the planting up of said tubs with our summer displays, all your help was greatly appreciated and made our work so much easier this year. 12

We have just had our meeting on August 11th where we were given an update on all three surgeries (Doddington, Wimblington, and Manea). These meetings are not just for the committee but for you ALL. As patients you are automatically members of the Patient Participation Group so please come to the meetings and give us your ideas. Notices of meetings are put up in all three surgeries two weeks before. We are intending introducing various speakers to come to the meetings to give us information on coping with such topics as stress and anxiety. Please can we have your ideas so we can build up a programme. The surgery now has a “Courier Service” which operates between all three surgeries delivering medications and other information. If you are house bound, for the cost of just £1, the surgery will deliver your prescription directly to your home. Doddington Car Parking - we have been approached by Doddington Parish Council regarding the cars parking on Benwick Road. There is additional parking for everyone on the land next to the surgery marked Staff Parking and Overflow Patient Parking so please try to help us keep the road clear of cars which can be so dangerous as the road is so narrow and is used by both lorries and vans. FLUTTERBIES SUMMER We have had a great summer here at Flutterbies, having had our busiest Holiday Club to date and enjoyed a variety of activities within the setting as well as some trips out to the cinema, Bretton Water Park, Stanwick Lakes, Snettisham Park and Ferry Meadows Country Park-
We have started the new academic year with a new look to the setting with an update to our indoor provision by adding educational areas which have a focus on curriculum based development such as a construction area supporting both

WE CAME, WE SAW, WE LOST OUR SHIRTS! Or in other words we all had a great time at the race night in the Five Alls, many thanks to Tony and Jaquie Richardson for the organisation and creative fabrication of riding equipment and Lofty for hosting the event.
Highlight of the evening was the “special” race were a group of lubricated jockeys were assembles on the stools and given riding equipment to encourage their fillies across the line first.
With Jacqui running the book it was clear that our financial future was secure and serious studying of form was the norm for the each race. When I say studying the form I mean Lofty’s form in dispensing of pints as I know absolutely nothing about horses other than they are big animals that move in many directions at once and are best avoided! The night was a great success with lots of fun had and money lost on my part although there were clearly others who were far more successful than I and everyone seemed to be having a ball.
Elaine laid on a supper to deal with the hunger of said exertions and everyone went home happy, with full bellies and (in most cases) a few pound in their pockets. Roll on the next one. Frankie Did Poorly

SCOUT GROUP NEWS by Rod Glen Beavers The Beavers visited Mepal Outdoor Centre in July for the County Beaver Activity Day. This was an all day event where the Beavers took part in a wide range of activities – including canoeing, rock climbing, campfire cooking, crossbows, water slide, trust trail and zorb football.

pizzas, learned about using really sharp knives and (most importantly) HOW TO WASH UP.
After several planned sessions got aborted by rain, we finally got the Cubs out collecting wood and lighting fires. They then cooked smores which were eagerly consumed – especially by Akela! Cubs meet on Tuesdays between 7:00 and 8:30 pm.

Scouts The Scouts have been working on their Forester badge in a wooded area near Benwick and with the Woodland Trust at Gault Wood near March. The summer session closed with them making ballistas using wooden staves and ropes. These were then used to fight a water battle with the Cubs.
Everyone got extremely wet and had great fun. Scouts meet on Tuesdays between 7:00 and 8:30 pm.
Remembrance Sunday Remembrance falls on Sunday 13th November. As usual there will be a Remembrance service held at the village hall, and afterwards at the war memorial. About 800 people attended school and services during the day. We never remember having a brighter or more joyous day. The Rector at the time was Rev. Hardy Wood, The Rural Dean. SWINE FEVER, 1887 The people of Benwick have lately sustained very serious losses from Swine Fever. Not taking into account young litters of pigs, which have died wholesale, they have lost 190 (more or less) valuable pigs. 155 died of Fever and 35 were killed. This is very serious as there is not the present loss, but the pigs have to be replaced and this will not be allowed, we believe for some time to come. We very sincerely sympathise with our parishioners. In this distress and we are very thankful that our collections in church, in spite of this heavy loss, have been rather larger than usual, instead of less. This shows, we think that their alms giving is practised upon right principles.

THIS YEAR’s VILLAGE FETE The Village Fete offered much fun for families. The kids definitely loved the sweets stand, only difficulty there was “what to eat first”, it all looked great.
There was also a fantastic show done by the Benwick Tang Soo Do team. Watching them in their skills was one thing, but seeing how much fun they had, was another.
There were Raffle stands where people were testing there luck. You had to have many tickets to make sure you got your fair share on the wonderful prices. JOIN THE BOARD OF HEALTHWATCH Healthwatch Cambridgeshire is looking for a dynamic person to join their Board as a non-executive director.
The final highlight was a demonstration of slabs and bricks which were smashed, in best tradition, by the edge of the hand. We were utterly amazed. Get in touch with the Tang Soo Do team, it is real fun! The Fete was a great afternoon for those who visited, but we’d wish that more Benwickians would join us next year. If you have any suggestions, or want to do a stand there, get in touch with the Village Hall team. Or just join, get an ice cream, look around, and support your local activities. Every event can only be successful if it gets the backup by the local people. So please, don’t forget, there is much on offer in the village, go out, take part, appreciate the hard work of voluntary people who try to organise things for all of us.

POWER CUT? CALL 105! You may have seen the launch of the new national power cut phone line – 105 – to help people contact the company that looks after their electricity network. This would be UK Power Networks for London, the East and South East of England. The number, which is available to electricity customers in England, Scotland and Wales, will enable people to report or get information about power cuts as well as report damage to electricity power lines and substations that could put themselves, or someone else, in danger. 105 is funded and delivered by the electricity network operators, and is a first for the UK’s energy indutry. As well as calling 105, you can find more information on the website: http://www.powercut105.com/ If you have a power cut, call 105 – a new, free service for people in England, Scotland and Wales. OTTO’s COLUMN Hi all, You know, I’ve travelled quite a bit in my old age, and as we always get questions on “how does it work” I thought I’ll give you a quick update. Basically, it is dead-easy. 4-legged ones have to be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. And then the vet can issue a passport (mine even got a cool looking photo of me in it). We’ve been in France for a couple of weeks, and if your food delivery servants have booked a ferry, you will have to remind them that you need some chews or toys in the car, as we are not allowed
to come upstair (but of course we are allowed to pay for the ferry trip). Keep the windows open a few inches, air is nice and otherwise it’s getting too hot in the car. I personally prefer the EuroTunnel, as I can be with my pack, and it is much shorter too. Don’t like fish too much thou, so let’s hope the tunnel is safe... The big thing is to come back home. Minimum 24hrs and not more then 5 days before you re-enter the UK we have to check in at a vet to get a tapeworm treatment, and a really important stamp in the passport. Make sure the vet wrote the right date!!! At the border I let them check my microchip, they have a funny beeping device, and that’s it, you are rolling back home.
