CHANGE! by Susanne Nichols Dear Benwickians, This edition’s cover page reflects not only the weather these days (it was taken on a walk a few days ago, and yes, of course we got wet). It also reflects the political situation we found ourselves in after the results of the referendum. Now, those of you who know me might guess that I personally wished for a different outcome, but that doesn’t matter. Now is the time to fetch our wellies and umbrella, don’t run away from bad weather, and get the work done. After all - after any rainy day the sun will shine again. I am happy to welcome back “Down Memory Lane” in this edition. I always loved reading how things were in the old days, and I am glad that Janet Fountain is sharing her memories with all of us! I’d like to invite you all to send in contributions! If you do something special, or you know somebody doing something special, please let us all know about it. You can either email me text and images, or you pack everything into an envelope and push it through our door. Thank you!

WIMBLINGTON & STONEA SUMMER SHOW

BENWICK VILLAGE SHOP Latest News. The news is that there is no news. Having said that, there is progress, and you might have noticed that indeed the shop furniture and shelves arrived and are being fitted. Having a shop will definitely add to the amenity of our village, it will be a plus in many ways, and will attract new people to our village. The book “Benwick Bygones” says we had a General Stores & Post Office until 2007. Don’t forget, there must have been a reason why the last shop closed. In other words - We need to support our shop. •

COLIN’S CHARITY BIKE RIDE Thanks to all who generously donated to help Colin Smith from Benwick raising money for the Alzheimer Society. Colin states “the bike ride went well, despite a very wet start. The weather did improve through the morning and that made the ride so much more enjoyable. It was well organised, nice people and lovely scenery. Most importantly I did raise money for the Alzheimers Society.” Colin did the “Robin Hood” signature ride of the Great Notts Bike Ride event, and he made his 50 miles. For all those who think “Pah, I could do that too”, why not sign up for next years event, the forms are already available online, and the event takes place on Sunday 25 June, 2017. Well done, Colin! THE MASTER GLASS BLOWER Just around the corner, in Chatteris, master glass blower Stewart Hearn runs his glass blowing studio, together with his wife Kathryn Hearn who is making ceramics porcelain, and recently showed her work at the international fair “Ceramics Art London”. I was curious to find out a bit more about them and their Open Day and asked some questions as their pieces are absolutely gorgeous.

moved to the Fens.

What motivated Stewart in the first place to work with glass? Pyromania! as it is for every glass maker Stewart knows! Stewart did a foundation course in Sunderland, during which it was also the first year of a glass degree course. The foundation students were able to have a go …. Stewart went back and had another go because he thought it was something quite exciting, by which time he was hooked and addicted to glass!

What do they appreciate in the Fens? Being able to see the changing seasons through the land. The weather, light, space, skies, people and the fact that its where and how we live.

How to know what is good and what bad glass? If someone asked a question, “what is good glass”, it is very much in the eye of the beholder linked to their current need, as is all craft, art and design. We make a large selection of work - both Art glass and functional - one off pieces and production pieces, as well as contract work. What we promote is handmade studio glass, so we’re not competing with factories. What was Stewart and Kathryn’s proudest moment in their career? Starting to work here, which is the first time I’ve ever owned my own workshop, and is the reason we

Which bit of their work is their favourite? Generally its my one-off work and the newest pieces I’m working on, so at the moment it would be my Ely lighting range - Ely Chandelier and Ely Wall Lights. There are some pieces, though, that will or are becoming classics, for example my Oval Encalmo Bowls.

Will there be items for sale during the Open Days? Yes, work is always for sale at our Open Weekends & from our permanent gallery, which is open Mon, Tue, Fri, 9am - 1pm (except over Christmas and the 1st & 2nd week of August).

BENWICK LADIES CLUB by Brenda Richards Our May visit to St Wendredas was very enjoyable. We found out so much about the building including the carving of the devil hidden among those of the angels. A number of us even made the climb up onto the bell ringing platform and further on to

see the actual bells. It was a lovely evening which was finished off by calling in at The Three Tons in Doddington for a drink. June was our ‘Strawberry Dessert Evening‘ and as well as sampling a variety of desserts we were able to try our hand at printing. Claire McGinley, an artist and illustrator, demonstrated a selection of prints she had made and the different items which could be used to make these prints. Next month 21st July we are having our meeting as usual in the village 10

hall but it will be with home grown as we have no speaker. No doubt time will be spent catching up on gossip. There are two dates on our calendar for August. Tuesday 16th we have a morning outing to the London Glassworks in Chatteris between 10.00 and 11.30.. While there we will see glass blowing firsthand. Thursday 18th we are back in the village hall for an evening of curling. Our meetings in the hall are from 7.00 - 9.00 and we welcome visitors. The meeting in September on the 15th will be aimed at fund raising for Macmillan Nurses and the care they offer. We hope that many of you in the village will come along to support us. Between 7.00 and 9.00 we will be serving tea/coffee and cake. There will also be cakes to buy and a raffle. Please come along. •

HAVE A LAUGH! A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The driver says, “Ugh! That’s the ugliest baby I’ve ever seen.” The woman stalks off to the rear of the bus and sits down. She turns to the man sitting next to her and says, “The driver just insulted me!” The man says, “You go and give him a telling off. I’ll hold your monkey for you.”

FORGET-ME-NOTS by Janet Fountain Our annual birthday party was held on Thursday, 5th May. Fifty members and friends thoroughly enjoyed the evening which began with a ploughman’s supper followed by a choice of dessert. By popular

kinder to us as we did get light rain but we all enjoyed lunch there and watched the long boats in the lock and a visit to the museum before coming back to the Van Haag garden centre at Peterborough for tea. The June meeting was very interesting. Jan Munt from Ely Cathedral gave us a talk about the history of the cathedral, but it was exceptional as we were all given a piece of a model and as the talk progressed we placed our piece and Jan told us about it. When completed the wooden model was a miniature replica of the cathedral. On 7th July we have a Cheese, Wine and Quiz evening. The competition is any item beginning with the letter N. A games evening will take place on 4th August and the competition any item beginning with the letter O. An afternoon outing is being arranged for a cream tea on Wednesday 27th July.

PUMPING STATIONS - NEWS There is good news coming for some of you if you have a private pumping station on your property. Currently, homeowners have to spend hundreds of pounds every year for electricity running costs, maintenance and repairs to look after these private pumping stations. From October 2016, many of these private pumping stations will transfer over to Anglian Water and become their responsibility. Anglian Water will take over all of the maintenance and the running costs too, saving you hassle, worry and money.

So, if you have a private pumping station at the bottom of your garden or in your street, Anglian Water needs to know about it. To take over they have to find the stations first, please get in touch with Anglian Water. If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, there’s a handy “spotters’s guide”, a specialist website, which can help: www.spotapumpingstation.co.uk. BENWICK IN BLOOM by Patricia Cuthbert B.I.B. has been very busy over the last few weeks installing new tubs around the village, then planting up with our summer bedding, despite the awful weather they are beginning to bloom well. The play park borders and Skeifs Row have also been tidied up and although looking wet and bedraggled they are also blooming. Roy Morton has made new boxes for the post box area on Doddington Road which have also been planted up. Mr Taylor has also made two new boxes and planted them up near the Benwick Village sign post on Doddington Road. All we need now is some sunshine.

The Judging day for the Anglia in Bloom competition is Friday 15th July, so once again we are hoping for the weather to be kind to us. All our work could not be completed without the help of so many volunteers, Mr Pettit growing plants for us, Mr Taylor managing the tubs on Doddington Road, Roy Morton constructing tubs for the post box, and the wonderful display of farming

tools at the bus shelter. “The Mooring” has been planted up bz Lyn and Howard in welcoming colours, making it an attractive place to moor up A number of beautiful plants were and visit Benwick. Tarina’s displays donated to us from Sandra from a in white Hart Drive, Glen Raven farm on Benwick Road these have helping wherever needed, Ron Taybeen planted up in the St Mary’s lor for all the litter picks he carries Cemetery borders, play park borders out, once again thank you all so very and Skeifs Row. A large number have much. Not least so many of your also been planted up by the Schools kind comments to us as we work gardening club in John’s Memorial around the village it is gratifying to garden. FLUTTERBIES CHILDCARE As always it has been a very busy summer term here at Flutterbies, we started the term by introducing some doctor / hospital role play into the setting by setting up Flutterbies General Hospital. The children were able to explore a variety of roles within a hospital such as being a midwife, surgeon, pharmacist, nurse

equipment, talking with them about what to do in an emergency and they even practiced putting each other into the recovery position. The children continue to enjoy our recently made ‘reading snug’ and in particular seem to enjoy looking through ‘Our Familiar Spaces in Benwick’ book. It creates a variety of conversations with the children, talking about where they live and the places they are familiar with. Over the past couple of weeks, we have held our annual Open Morning and Dads’ Morning, where we opened our doors to our current and prospective families to join in with some fun!

etc. We were very lucky to be have some real hospital resources donated such as information sheets, knee and wrist supports, bandages, As we draw to the end our Pre-school masks and hospital wrist bands year we start our fun-packed summer and we equipped the children with with our Holiday Club. We have a vastethoscopes, a blood pressure riety of cooking, messy play, arts and monitor and an otoscope to enhance crafts and outside games planned as their play experience. DOWN MEMORY LANE by Janet Fountain One of my earliest memories is Benwick Feast. It was always a time of joy and merriment in the village. In those days village life was mostly connected to agriculture, it wasn’t until after the second world war when people went away for their holidays so the annual holiday was taken in July when it was a slack time on the farms, just waiting for the corn harvest.

two – one for work and one for best). That was generally the mode of transport in those days. Now the excitement in the village started to build up a few days before the feast opened. The living caravans and the big lorries carrying all the amusements and the genera-

tors started to arrive and as children we watched the men erect it all. The feast was always on the open ground at the top of the High Street but when that became full it carried on down the street. At one time the cake walk was near the Methodist Chapel. The living vans would park along the old Station Road near the Rectory along the riverside.

Feast nights were 17th, 18th and 19th July or the nearest if a Sunday was involved. Benwick Feast was followed by Ramsey Fair and Warboys Feast and most people went to all three. I remember names such as Fendicks There were very few cars but nearly and Thurstons with the jollity farm everyone had a bike (in Mary Ball’s and the cake walk, Charlie Nunn with article in the Sunday Express after the children’s roundabout and the the war she wrote some folks had www.benwickbugle.co.uk 24

coconut shy, Albert Walsh had win a goldfish and darts and a rifle range and Rocky Thompson with a rock and sweet stall. The prizes were chalk dogs and wall plaques as well as the coconuts and goldfish but folks were delighted when they won.

The Five Alls obtained a wine and spirit licence in 1957 when there were major alterations carried out by Watney’s brewery. It wasn’t just at night time that village people enjoyed themselves. There were activities during the daytime too. The village cricket field was down Chase Road, near Keyworth Farm and matches were held there.

The pubs did a roaring trade, seven in the street. Some of the men (women didn’t go in them at first) would do a pub crawl and have a drink in The Nag’s Head, The Pack Horse, The Five Alls, The George, The White Hart, The Bell and finish up at The Boot and Slipper (the top house as it was known) as that was where the feast was.

The players would all come back to The Bell for tea. The Peterborough Agricultural Show was also held that week and as time went on and more and more people got cars they went there for the day.

Six of the pubs were only beer houses though, The Boot and Slipper was the only one with a wine and spirit licence but I do not ever remember any violence or vandalism.

In the 1960’s some of the villagers wanted to get away for their holiday and began by going to Hunstanton and Great Yarmouth and eventually package holidays abroad and so began the decline of “Benwick Feast”.

SCHOOL Celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday On Friday 10th June the whole school came dressed in red, white and blue to celebrate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The day was spent learning about the Queen, her family and traditions such as Trooping the Colour.

Some of the children designed birthday cards which they have sent to Buckingham Palace. At lunchtime staff and children all went outside for a birthday picnic. Everyone enjoyed a packed lunch on picnic blankets on the field, either prepared by parents or by the school caterers. The children enjoyed their picnic and were particularly please with the slightly longer lunch break!! www.benwickbugle.co.uk

SCOUT GROUP NEWS

by Rod Glen

Beavers The Beavers went on a camp on June 4th at the Copley Scout Centre in St Ives. Whilst there the Beavers helped pitch the tent, cooked their own supper over an open fire, learned about firelighting, played a lot of outdoor games with other Beavers from all over Cambridgeshire, and took part in a campfire celebratio All of our Beavers attending were formally invested into the Scout Association by the Assistant County Commissioner for Beavers (Di Philby). This is a very great honour and we are grateful that Di took the time out for the ceremony. Coming up we have an activity day at Mepal Outdoor Centre where they will be doing archery, rafting, rock climbing, crate stacking and much more. The colony meets on Wednesdays between 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm. Cubs We have a new assistant leader for Cubs, Phillip Krone. He brings con-

siderable knowledge and experience of outdoor activities and bushcraft. We intend to bring much of this into our programme. Cubs meet on Tuesdays between 7:00 and 8:30 pm.

Scouts On June 18th we took the Scouts to Cardington for white water kayaking on the River Ouse flood relief channel. However, all the rain during the preceding week meant that by that morning the river level was so high that the channel might be needed as a – flood relief channel! We remained on site to see if the river level would drop but by early afternoon the Environment Agency confirmed this was not going to happen. This was obviously very disappointing, but was out of anyone’s’ control and is only the second time it has happened in over 25 years. Better luck next year! Scouts meet on Tuesdays between 7:00 and 8:30 pm. Contact Rod Glen, Group Scout Leader, for any questions.

- I got bitten by an adder and survived, hah! Well, alright, I felt not too good and the doc said without his anti-venom I might have lost my leg. Now, I’m not only telling you to get lots of extra fuss, I am telling you because end of June there was an adder seen around High Street. Don’t forget to tell the little 2-legged ones how to deal with snakes if they see one!!
