LIVING IN THE STICKS? by Susanne Nichols Dear Benwickians, I hope the cover image of this Bugle has the same impact on you then it had on me. It made me want to jog to the next market to buy tons of strawberries, and it took me forever to decide on which of my favourite strawberry recipes I’d share with you. I decided on Eton Mess, because it can be prepared in no time, and it tastes just so wonderful! But you could also do some strawberry ice cream for the kids, or a classic cake, topped with strawberries. Or, if you feel adventurous, you could combine a pork steaks with strawberries. And apart from hundreds of other recipes, you could just go, pick your own and enjoy them pure. Delicious! Just in case you aren’t aware of this – Lauren at the White House Farm is proud owner of more than 5,000 strawberry plants, so Pick Your Own is just around the corner really. Enjoy! For those who want to find out what’s written in the stars there’s the Psychic Night on May 19th (p16). On May 21st we have the Benwick Exhibition (p12). And I hope I’ll see you all for the Murder Mystery Play (left page) in the Village Hall on June 17th. And finally, on May 14th the Annual Council Assembly takes place in the

Village Hall (p5). If you think this isn’t for you then rethink, this is the meeting where you can find out about things, so please do join, hear what is planned, what has been done, or bring your own suggestions forward. I look forward to seeing you out and about.

DOWN MEMORY LANE

by Janet Fountain

Benwick Station (Courtesy of Peter Paye)

In the spring of 1880 investigations were made into the possibility of a railway through Benwick, and on 14th September of that year an agreement was reached for an inexpensive siding between March and Whittlesea. This was to provide farmers and growers in the area around Benwick with a suitable loading point for produce being despatched to local markets. In 1890 the directors of the Great Eastern Railway considered building a tramway (railway) to Benwick, but nothing was done. At a public meeting in Benwick on 1st June 1892 it was stated that this facility was urgent. It wasn’t until 1895 that it was authorised commencing at Three Horseshoes and terminating at the “Nene Quay” in Benwick. The cost was estimated at £22,000 but exceeded the budget. Work began in 1896 and the railway was finally opened on 2nd August 1898. Local dignitaries and guest held a public

lunch in the school and Ramsey Brass Band entertained. Coote and Warren, coal merchants, had a coal yard at the station. During both world wars the freight handled at Benwick Station was very important as the vital provisions of home grown food, grain, vegetables and sugar beet were despatched to home markets. No passenger service was provided but railway enthusiasts paid a visit on 9th September 1956.

During the 1950’s railway freight started to decline but was given a boost when diesel replaced steam in November 1962. However this was shortlived as the Beeching Report was published in 1963. British Railways exhibited closure notices and Benwick Station closed on 13th July 1964. After 67 years the track and sleepers were removed and the goods yard became a farm yard with a farm building owned by the Burton family.

SCOUT GROUP NEWS

by Rod Glen

As the evenings get lighter and the days get longer, our thoughts turn to more outdoor activities. In July, the Cubs will be on the water at Pitsford Reservoir bell boating with scouts for the Kettering/Corby district. They are all very excited about going. A bell boat is a twin hulled canoe joined by a platform. The paddlers sit in line in each hull facing forward, on the right side the paddlers paddle in coordination on the right only and on the left side the paddlers paddle on the left (see picture).

I will be going along with my camera to get lots of action photos of them falling in the lake.

For May Day we were visited by Sarah Jolly from Peterborough Pagans. She came to talk about how many British folk customs are rooted in pagan tradition, such as May Day and Easter Eggs. News from further afield, there is now an Explorer Scout unit in Ramsey. Explorers is the section of Scouts for 15 – 18 year olds. They meet on Thursday evenings (7:30 – 9:30). If any one is interested in joining, please contact me and I will put you in touch with them.

FARMLAND MUSEUM MAY FUN This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Farmland Museum at Denny. A new display tells the remarkable story of the founders of the museum, the Delanoy family, and how the museum originated in the village of Haddenham in 1969. The family led by son Craig collected craft tools and agricultural machinery at a time when such items were being thrown away or broken up for scrap. The next event will be the “40s at Denny” days on Sun, 28 & Bank Holiday 29 May, embracing all things 1940s! Expect to meet costumed re-enactors including GIs, period demonstrations, listen to (and join in with ) 1940s songs, and admire vintage vehicles.

The same weekend our Scouts have been invited to take past in a “Hunger Games” themed camp. They will have to complete one challenge to “earn” their food for the weekend, another to earn something to cook it, another to earn their sleeping shelter, and so on. I’m sure More info here: www.farmlandmuseum. org.uk they will enjoy it!

FORGET-ME-NOTS by Janet Fountain

We had a change of plan for our March meeting. Unfortunately the lady jockeys had race commitments so had to cancel their visit to us. Therefore we had a bingo evening which was enjoyed by all. In April Leisha O’Brien from Cambridgeshire Older People’s Partnership Board spoke to us about Local Social and Support groups. After tea and biscuits were served Anne Wall, our chair lady told us about her life and experiences in the wardrobe department at The Royal Opera House in London. She brought along ballet tutus which she had made and we could see all the intricate work involved.

BENWICK LADIES CLUB

by Marie Andrew

Benwick Ladies’ March 16th started with a short meeting with Anne announceing the time the bus was picking us up at the War Memorial for our trip to London. We had two visitors. Our speaker for the evening was Janet Newby-Robson talking about Healthwatch. If you want to know of any Health and Social Care Services near you, or you have any concerns or complaints, or any organisations that have let you down, ask their advice on 01480 420628 or www.healthwatchcambridgeshire.co.uk, they will do what they can.

On 3rd May we have an outing to Guyhirn to play ten pin bowls and on 4th May it is the club’s Birthday - 58 years since the club began. A ploughman’s supper is planned followed by entertainment by Tom Kennedy. For the June meeting on 1st we have a speaker “Growing Old Disgracefully”. The competition is any item beginning letter U and please bring a baby photo of yourself for “Guess Who”. On 6th July we will be having a cheese, wine and quiz evening and the competition any item beginning letter V. New members very welcome so if you are over 55, male or female please join us in the village hall on first Thursday in the month at 6.30 p m.

20

April 20th brought us a fun night with curling and a lot of natter. Winner on very last end was Yvonne. Our speaker for May 18th will be Amanda Carling. Anyone wishing to join us will be quite welcome.

BENWICK PRIMARY SCHOOL

CHATTERIS MYTH & MEMORY BOOK

by Susan Spencer

A very busy term with everyone working very hard. Just some of our highlights were :Year 5 children visited March Fire Station to visit their Safety Zone. Everyone had a great time visiting various Safety Zones – fire, police, car safety, water and dogs. Our Girls Football team had a great match on the 1/3 as they played against other village schools. Overall we came joint 2nd! Then at the end of March we had a Football Friendly with a local Village school where we had a fantastic win of 7-1! During March we had our fantastic annual World Book Day where the children dressed up as their favourite book characters and of course our Red Nose Day celebrations raising £97.00 for Comic Relief.

Did you know that Fen Tiger is not an animal? Have you heard about the Black Shuck, a mythical hellhound, who is still claimed to roam many parts of the UK, including Chatteris? Heard about the Wise Woman, who uses her scrying bowl to tell the future? This book is an exploration of myths and memories of the town of Chatteris and its people. Discovering Chatteris as you never knew it before, this book would be a mythical guide for a newcomer, and a treasured memorabilia for those, who live in Chatteris and the Fens. The book will be available to purchase at the official book launch as part of the Myth & Memory Celebration Day in Chatteris on Thursday, 22 June 2017. The price for the book is £10, plus £3 postage per book.

Then we had our very popular Bring Mum to School Morning on 21 March 2017 with over 50 mums, grannies, Aunty’s coming into school to share our learning for the morning.

Want to get more from your retirement? We’d all like to make the most of our retirement, but with the cost of living and inflation continuing to increase, you may find that what was a comfortable income is simply no longer enough. Fortunately, there’s a way that you can cover your needs and enjoy the retirement you are looking for. With equity release, you could release some of the capital tied up in your home, without having to move house. Release the money tied up in your home and start making the most of your retirement. It could help you: l Repay debts or outstanding mortgages l Boost your income l Help your family l Make improvements to your home Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. Equity release may not be right for everyone. It may affect your entitlement to state benefits and will reduce the value of your estate. This is a Lifetime Mortgage.
