enwick’s Jubilee Celebrations are nearing ever closer and it looks the the committee has set out to spoil us! There is a host of events planned, just see page 4 for the schedule. I would like as many people to submit photographs of the celebrations for use on the village website see page 5 for details. There’s the usual range of updates from our village groups and an update from the Parish Council too. And I know it has been a while, but the new Benwick Bugle website is nearly ready and should be launched prior to the next edition!

Glass Bottle Banks
D
id you know that you can recycle your old glass bottles at the Chapel Gardens bottle banks? They are in the car park behind the Bus Shelter. There are two major benefits to using these bottle banks, firstly it saves you plenty of space in your blue bins, but the Parish Council also get a small amount of money based on how much is recycled through them. The more people use the banks, the more they get.

e have started the summer term with an extremely successful Plant Sale, the sale was completely stocked by donations from Chapel Cottage Plants in Wimblington, Delfland and a few local residents. A fabulous turn out from school staff, parents and the local community meant that all the plants were sold and £271 was made, all of which will go into the funds for Benwick Primary School.

So far this year FOBS has agreed to give each class within the School £250 towards a trip or visiting experience. Longer Term we are raising funds to decorate the school playground once it has been replaced.
Coming up this term, FOBS are providing the food and decorations for the Jubilee Street Party to be held at school for the pupils. Our regular Film Night will be held for the pupils on 22nd June after school, film to be announced.

J
une 5th sees the welcome return of It's a Knockout - a fun-filled afternoon specifically for children from Year 2 and above, attending Benwick Primary School or living in the village. Application forms for teams will be circulated from 11th May, with the teams being allocated by the school. There will be points awarded for the team with the best Joker, with prizes to the winning teams, kindly donated by the Parish Council as part of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.
Anyone free to act as judges on the day, please contact a committee member at the event, or beforehand at mary@tylerbenwick.co.uk as many hands make light work. Looking forward to seeing you all there enjoying the sunshine and squeals of laughter.

he Car Boot was very successful, thank you to everyone for the fabulous donations! The car boot we held in Benwick raised £131.50 we then took the remaining donations to Skylark and raised a further £73.05 making a grand total of £204.55! Thank you to everyone that helped out!

Friends of Benwick Church
A
s most of us can see the building work continues at pace with the work on the internals to the village hall now also in full swing. It is still anticipated that the new build will be completed early June and the Village hall by end of May. There have been no fund raising events since the last bugle but as already reported we have now passed over the running of the Burns Night to the Village Hall committee, however we have also decided that the Christmas Bazaar going forward would also be better organised by this group and have formally informed them of this.

We will continue with a few low key fund raising events like Quiz nights etc. We are also considering the future of the Friends of Benwick which was set up to raise the funds to build our new home, this during this year will be completed and we think the best route forward is the establish a benwick Church Committee. Benwick Scout Group
T
he evenings are getting lighter and the weather is getting warmer. For the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts this means one thing – we can get outside again, and that means more adventurous stuff. The Beavers have had their first evening hike of the year (with the Cubs as well) up to Keyworth House Farm. On arriving they found a camp fire over which they cooked marshmallows followed by the traditional Scout sing-a-long. The colony will also be attending a

County Activity Day at Mepal Outdoor Centre in July, where the activities include snorkelling, orienteering, rafting, climbing, backwoods cooking and trampolining. The Cubs have been at Mepal Outdoor Centre, doing rock climbing and archery, and have started designing their go-kart for the Jubilee kart race. In June we will be taking the Cubs to Mepal to learn open water canoeing, and in July we will be doing a joint camp with the Ramsey Cub Pack at the Rural Life Museum. Among other activities they will be helping set up

for the Ramsey 1940s weekend. This will count toward their Community Challenge badge, Outdoor Challenge badge and Environment Partnership badge. During the winter the Scouts have been learning map-reading and how prepare for a hike. By the time this is published they will have done their first hike without close supervision by the leaders. They are being offered an incentive of a supply of Mrs Glen’s shortbread for successfully completing this. In June they are going white water canoeing near Bedford. This will be the fourth time we have attended this event. I predict the scouts will come home very wet, very tired, very happy and very hungry.
The Scouts have started designing a go-kart for the Jubilee kart race. The designs so far show an outstanding amount of both imagination and practicality. The Scouts have also been invited to join the Cubs for their canoeing event at Mepal. In future we intend to work more closely with the 1st Doddington Scout and the Ramsey Scout Groups. This will allow sharing expertise among leaders, joining in joint activities and camps

hank you to everyone who took part in the recent patient survey. We were very pleased to discover that there is an overwhelming appreciation of the services and the level of dedication and care the teams within our surgeries provide. A summary of the survey’s findings can be viewed at the surgeries. From some responses, it became
clear from that certain facts are not as widely known as we would hope, consequently we have put together this ‘did you know’ list. Our next open meeting is on Thursday 3rd May at 6.30 at the Doddington Medical Centre. All patients registered with the practice are welcome to attend!

All medical professionals that you see at the surgery have access to your full medical history. You can make appointments in advance with the doctor of your choice. Each patient is allowed 10mins with the doctor, many other surgeries only allow 5! If all missed appointments were cancelled in advance, there would be far more appointments avaliable - please cancel your appointment if you no longer need it. If you need to speak to doctor, but do not need a consultation you can arrange for a doctor to phone you. Our Doctors are highly egarded by their peers and consequently are often involved in making national and regional decisions within the NHS. This sometimes takes them away from the surgery but means they can ensure the greater needs of their patients are not overlooked or forgotten at policy level. The surgery is currently undergoing refurbishments and there is now a wider selection of seating styles in the waiting room to suit patient needs. The new treatment room means more minor procedures are able to be performed at the surgery. Improving privacy at the reception desk is being investigated. Parish Council Report

t has again been a busy year and in addition to the general business of the Council we have been involved in a wide range of projects and initiatives, from supporting the Fox’s Christmas Tree & biscuit event, to selecting a design for the new footbridge that will be replaced later this year by CCC. Unfortunately we have recently lost Gill Thomas from the Council, we thank her for her work and time as a councillor. In her place we have coopted Richard Emmitt and welcome his involvement.

‘Ritings from the Rectory
B
ishop Stephen Conway has been the Bishop of Ely for almost a year and is encouraging churches across the diocese to have a conversation together which he is calling ‘Imagining the future’. It is something that the church is not very good at thinking about. A vision of a future that is different represents change and many of us find that living in such a fast paced rapidly changing world is quite unsettling. Many look to the church as a kind of oasis of stability where some former and more unchanging reality still prevails. When Jesus died on Good Friday his band of enthusiastic followers were shattered all their hopes and dreams seemed to have imploded. Their teacher was gone; his amazing enterprise of peace and love, of new starts for all who wanted his message of fullness of life here and into eternity seemed like just a dream that had come to a shuddering halt. They were demoralised and depressed, that is until Jesus began appearing to them again very much alive, but it took time for them to readjust their mind set. 22
On the first Easter Day two of Jesus followers were walking from Jerusalem to their home seven miles away in Emmaus they were downcast and emotionally drained. Jesus came and walked along with them but they didn’t recognise him. He engaged them in conversation asked what they were talking about. They poured out about their master and all that happened and they said ‘and we had hoped’ that he was the one to set Israel free. Jesus we are told opened up their minds to understand all that was written about him in the word of God, that the Saviour must suffer and die for the sins of the world and three days later rise to life again. When they got to their house Jesus broke some bread at table and they knew it was him, they knew all would be well and they rushed off to tell their friends. The Bishop says it is a bit like that for the Church of England today, we had hoped we could keep things the same, we had hoped the church would continue in its current shape, but he says this cannot be. Many churches are now being grouped together and we are beginning to learn to function in new and different ways. So as churches we will be seeking God

to find his plans and purposes for us as we journey with him into a future that is unknown to us but not to him. We shall be seeking to rekindle hopes and dreams to sustain us along the way. We shall learn to be Pilgrims once again who launch off on a journey that leads to something that really is worth having the hopes and dreams of the Kingdom of God.

t the March meeting the club had a speaker and demonstration from Oakhouse Foods who are based in St. Ives and deliver meals, some grocery items and home wares direct to your door. Members were given catalogues to see what is available and enjoyed tasting many of the meals.
June 7th is Our Party to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee which will be in the newly refurbished Village Hall. The entertainment is by Tom Kennedy and the competition any Royal Item.
