hristmas is just around the corner (well, nearly) and so I first want to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Christmas, and thank everyone who has supported the Bugle since I took it over. There are plenty of updates inside, Tony Richardson of the Parish Council has us updated with all the latest goings on. Janet Fountain of the ForgetMe-Nots tells us what they have been up to, and we are introduced to the new Rector at Doddington Kevin Fitzgibbon. There is also news on the Queens Jubilee next year, and the Benwick Dickensian Market in November.

he Village Sports Committee would like to invite you all to our inaugural Race Nite on November 12th, to be held at the School from 7.30pm. Come and have a flutter on the Geegees and potentially go home with more money than you came with! We are in the process of contacting local businesses to sponsor each race – so if you like the idea of the “(Insert your business name here) Steeple chase or the “Smith Family Handicap” then you can be famous for the night for £20!
Individuals or families may also like to be owners or jockeys (for £10 and £5). The winners of each race will take 50% of the takings in each class. fter four years of being on the FOBS committee, Teresa and Neil Goulding stood down after deciding it was time for some fresh faces and new ideas around the table. We have had a great time helping to give the children something extra and wanted to thank everyone in the village for your help and generosity over the years in helping us in the good work. It is very rewarding to see those no longer directly involved with the school still willing to play a part by attending the various events or taking part in the monthly draw.

Thu Nov 3rd – Second Hand Clothes Collection FOBS will be staging another second hand clothes collection on Thursday November 3rd. Please could you bring along any unwanted second hand clothes, shoes and household linen, in half-filled dustbin bags (shoes in separate bags please), from 9am to the side room of the village hall. All funds raised will be used directly for the benefit of the Benwick Primary schoolchildren.

012 sees the Queen’s 60th year on the throne and it is now time to decide how the village should celebrate. The Parish Council has already been awarded £1000 from Fenland DC to help support an event, and a few ideas have been put forward. They would like to hear from everyone so that we can have the best event possible for the day. Their suggestions (and a couple of my own) are below. The Parish Council The last few months have been a busy time for your Councillors, not just with our continuing support for local village issues and needs, but also as we address the challenges with the impending ‘Localism Bill’ and as FDC consult on their new ‘20 year Communities Development plan for the district’. Let’s look at some of the things the Council have been up to. Queen’s Diamond Jubilee 2012 We will be receiving a grant of £1,000 to help the village celebrate the Jubilee next year. To this end, we have already been in discussion with several other groups within the Village, to gather ideas as to how we should celebrate and to ask them if they want to get involved. For more on this see page 13.

Following on from this, we now have proposals from FDC/CCC to deliver an every other week youth club (either in the Village hall or in a specially prepared bus), starting in late October, for the next year. Cremation Area I appreciate this subject can be upsetting, but our existing cremation area was in danger of becoming full and we decided it also needed a revamp. To this end we have purchased new slabs, edging and shingle to extend the area and improve its appearance. The work has now been completed, thanks to the voluntary labour of your Cllrs, Reg Few and Kevin Sutton together with former Cllr Howard Langford and myself. We hope you like the new look?

Public Open Space Having recognised we have deficiency in Public Open Space and in line with the Parish Plan, we have enlisted the support of Steve Barclay and have been talking to members of BAFC to see if we can secure an area that can be used for community use. This is a long term project, but I recently attended a funding, day with organisations such as, The Big Lottery fund, Sport for England, WREN etc. and the feedback was positive. Verge Cutting I appreciate that some of you may have concerns over the standard of verge cutting around the village, but we have had to engage new contractors as our grants for such have been cut by 25% this year. y the time you read this we will probably have experienced the first frosts of the coming winter. After the extremely harsh winter of 2010-11, during which many people lost much prized and long established plants, I thought it would be appropriate to look at the ways in which you can prepare your garden for the winter ahead. During the last twenty five years that I have been gardening we had not had a really tough winter until the last one So plants that my parents always considered tender, such as Hebe, Cabbage Palms and Pampas shave been left to fend for themselves, unprotected, and with disastrous results. Here are some pointers on how you can protect your plants from the worst this year: - Plants that are trained against walls or tender plants growing in the open ground can be protected with simple, fleece-covered frames. Tender bulbs, corms and tender, herbaceous plants should be covered with a thick mulch of manure, straw or old leaves to prevent the soil from freezing. In the spring, new shoots can be protected with a loose layer of straw or a bellcloche.
during periods of cold weather and stop them from becoming dehydrated. - If you have a greenhouse then tender plants that are in pots can be moved inside to keep the frost off. - Protect the crowns of tree ferns and insulate their trunks by wrapping them in layers of fleece or hessian stuffed with straw. Cordylines and palms should be treated similarly, by tying their leaves into bunches, to protect their crowns. - Protect low-growing plants from wet weather by covering them with a sheet of glass or a cloche and surrounding them with a layer of gravel or grit, to ensure swift drainage. - For pots that are too heavy to move and for those of you that have nowhere to put them, wrap the pots in bubble wrap or old carpet to protect the roots from freezing and protect the upper plant as detailed above. Benwick Forget-me-Nots
O
n September 1st we held our Harvest Festival. The service was taken by members of Peterborough Salvation Army who also led the singing of hymns. Besides our own members we had visitors from Coates and Christchurch clubs and everyone enjoyed light refreshments. Mr. Dennis Clarke was the auctioneer who sold the produce to raise funds for the club. For our meeting on 6th October members enjoyed a demonstration of Christmas flower arrangements by Ann Purt of Wisbech. Some were made of fresh flowers and foliage and others with artificial material but they were all splendid and afterwards Mrs. Purt donated them for raffle prizes
On the third of Novemeber we have our Bingo - which is open to all. Eyes down at 7:15 in the Village Hall. Some good prizes to be won. On 1st December it’s our Christmas Party, members please remember the 6pm start. We do not meet in January, so the first meeting of 2012 is Thursday February 2nd.

Up the Pub
A
number of events are happening over the Christmas Period, and a special Christmas Menu is running from December 1st to 23rd. You can see the menu on page 27. At the Dickensian Market on November 19th there will be a small beer festival, with 6 guest beers plus the three on the pumps. From November 1st squares will be on sale for the christmas draw, it will
be drawn on Sunday 18th December there will be also be a meat raffle that day. On Christmas Eve there will be a Dicsco night and on New Years Eve there will be another Disco with a small buffet. The Pub is also looking for pool players for the new season if anyone is interested.

Benwick Scout Group News The Group got off to a good start in September with new recruits in both Beavers and Cubs. The Beavers enjoyed a camp fire with hot dogs, marshmallows and songs this month, along with over fifty other Beavers at the District Autumn camp fire. They had a great time despite getting slightly damp thanks to the weather. The Scouts had a truly flying start when they went parascending at the beginning of October. This was courtesy of Sky Lincs, at MOD Luffenham near Rutland Water. It was a beautiful, sunny and breezy day. The lighter Scouts were lucky to fly tandem with an experienced pilot, and the heavier people flew solo towed behind a Land Rover. One individual was “lucky” enough to have his last flight last over 10 minutes; as the wind had picked up so much that when the Land Rover stopped he didn’t come down and just hung there like a kite! The Cubs have been learning first aid this term, perhaps a good idea as they have also been working towards their DIY badge! Halloween came early to the village hall for Beavers, Cubs & Scouts in the last week of the school term. There was pumpkin carving, apple bobbing, fancy dress and much more. The Cubs and the Scouts will again be collecting in the village on behalf of the Poppy Appeal of the British Legion in the first week of November. The Remembrance Service will take place in the village hall in the morning of 13th November, followed by the laying of the wreaths at the war memorial. Finally, we have two vacancies on the commitee, see more on page 32.

‘Ritings from the Rectory
M
y name is Kevin Fitzgibbon and I was licensed as Priest in Charge of Doddington with Benwick and Wimblington on 6th October. I have been in ordained ministry for 30 years serving in a variety of situations both towns and villages. I am already responsible for Christchurch, Manea and Welney so I now oversee the Church of England ministry in the six communities. I live in the Rectory in Manea. I am married and have grown up children and young grandchildren. Do say hello if you see me around trying to keep up with a whippet. I look forward to getting to know these village communities, local families and individuals as we share together in significant life events and regular worship services. The pattern of the Church of England ministry is changing and most churches are now or soon will be part of larger groups.
We already have and will be developing a team of people ordained and lay who will fulfil different aspects of the churches’ ministry. That said we are hoping to be able to appoint another part time priest to be based in Doddington. We also benefit from the ministry of a Retired Priest, a Licensed Lay Minister and two Authorised Lay Ministers. I am pleased to be your new Parish Priest. he Group has two vacancies for volunteers on the management committee. Firstly, we need a Treasurer to look after the finances. The ideal person would have some experience of book-keeping or accountancy. Secondly, we are seeking someone to be Quartermaster, who would manage the equipment held – keeping an asset register and managing the booking out and return of the equipment. A number of people are members of the group which sees daily postings of new items for sale. Just a quick browse now and there is 3 Wii Games for £20, a Play Station 1 with four games for £20, an assortment of babies clothes, earings, playstation 2 games, DVDs and the like. There are also CD towers, electric guitars and TV’s.
