In early 2011 I took on the running of the Benwick Bugle from Jane Levicki, the Bugle’s founder. It was a project I was (and still am) incredibly pleased to be able to deliver and I hope that it provides a good service to the village.

mail@benwickbugle.co.uk Some may know that I no longer 07584 057 228 live in the village, having stayed in Manchester when I finished by Human Biology degree and last year buying my first house in the beautiful town of Knutsford in North Cheshire; where I work for the Town Council as Town Clerk. I have over the past couple of years taken on so much more that I do not have enough time to give to the Bugle and my missing the deadline to promote the Dickensian Market was a clear sign that the Bugle needs someone with more time to dedicate to Benwick. The Bugle takes about 15 hours every two months to compile and generates a small profit as reward. I will provide a handover to the new editor including contacts and some advice on how to keep it going. I will complete the January/February edition, with a view that the new editor takes it on for the March/April edition. I can assure you that it is a rewarding job to do and a great way to give something back to the village. It would suit someone with some IT skills, and could be completed on Microsoft Publisher. BENWICK LADIES CLUB by Brenda Richards On October 19th our speaker was a guide dog puppy walker with her dog Minnie. She gave us an incite into all that goes into the training of each dog. It was also lovely to welcome a new visitor to the group. We are coming to the end of 2015 and only have two meetings left. The speaker for November 16th is Cliff Carson an Environmental Officer from Middle Level Commissioners. The subject will be that although the drainage of the fens is their prime aim they also take into account that the fauna needs to be looked after, for example voles, otters and kingfishers. Our last meeting is on December 14th (change of date because previous one was too near to Christmas) We will be ending our year with the annual Christmas party. The programme for 2016 is coming together but the major information is that we will now be meeting on the 3rd Thursday of the month. 4

FORGET-ME-NOTS by Janet Fountain The Harvest Festival on 3rd September was well supported. Mike Jones, a former Benwick resident conducted the service and Dennis Clarke was the auctioneer selling the donated produce to raise funds for the club. Unfortunately David Palmer was unable to come for our October meeting but David Townsend who owns the auction house at Beeston, Norfolk came in his place. We had a really good evening taking our own items for valuation and David brought 10 items of his own for our valuation. This was very interesting as some we thought valuable were fakes and vice versa. Some of our members attended the Age UK meeting at Cine World, Huntingdon on 14th October where they spent an enjoyable day. The theme was based on the second world war and we listened to an evacuee, a historian and Age UK who have published a book from Cambridgeshire residents. A packed lunch of that era was provided for everyone and afterwards 6
we watched a full length film “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and a bag of popcorn was given to all. Our annual bingo is on Thursday, 5th November – doors open 6.30 and eyes down at 7.00pm. Good prizes all donated by members. Two outings are planned for November. An afternoon show at The Brook, Soham on 13th November which includes Dana – the Irish singing star. The second is a day trip to Norwich on 25th November with an optional visit to the Van Dal shoe factory. The Christmas dinner is on Thursday, 3rd December starting at 6pm. We have a four course meal planned with excellent entertainment by Mike Gee who is a singer and comedian. There is no meeting in January so the first meeting in the New Year will be on Thursday 4th February. New members and visitors always welcome. •

LETTER TO THE EDITOR I visited Benwick on Sunday for a fishing match, making the journey from Bedfordshire. I have visited many times and always park near the cemetery by the river. During the match three young boys did their best to cause a nuisance across the river but eventually left. Crossing the footbridge afterwards the kids and an older girl were waiting to see my reaction to what they’d done to my new car. It was covered in mud and leaves, a tyre let done. Spit ran down the windows and the drivers door had scratches from a kick. The boys legged it but the girl stayed until I called the police. When she too ran and called to the boys to run home. I will never be able to visit Benwick again and the damage will cost me £250. It makes me very sad that these kids are running wild and have no respect for other people or their property. I could have been visiting a grave for all they knew. •

BENWICK IN BLOOM by Jill Hindle Benwick in Bloom have been busy tidying the village and planting tubs and boxes with winter pansies. Special thanks to Delfland for their support. The St.Marys Churchyard project well underway with the help of community payback planting over 5,000 daffodil bulbs around the perimeter of the footprint. A Copper Beech tree has also been planted where once the Altar stood within the footprint to commemorate Benwick’s participation in both world wars and seeded with wild flowers. A big thank you to Mega Plants for their support and advice.. Forthcoming fund raising events in November will be our table top Xmas sale at Askham House on the 28th and our Xmas raffle which will be drawn on the 19 th December.
BENWICK SCHOOL by Jackie North On Monday 26th September Class 1 enjoyed a ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’ in the afternoon. Grandparents were invited to join in the fun and games. We all brought in our teddies from home and shared stories about them with the class. The children spent the morning making jam sandwiches and biscuits. We started off the afternoon with a whole class game of hide and seek, which the children loved. Then we enjoyed our picnic in the sunshine, where it was lovely to see the children sharing out the food and fetching drinks for the grandparents. They were great hosts! We also had a few games of ‘duck duck goose’ and had a teddy bear sweetie hunt. Thank you to all of the grandparents that came; it was lovely to see so many of you there. •

VILLAGE HALL by Pat Tickner For those of you that have been in the hall lately you will have noticed the new paint work that makes the hall look so much better and we are trying to keep it that way so asking hirers not to stick notices on the walls with sellotape or blutack. The village hall trustees are trying several ideas to get bodies into the hall in an effort to raise funds to keep the hall up to date. The latest being the Murder Mystery on Saturday 17th October which although poorly supported was acclaimed a winner by all who attended. The bar was particularly popular at the club prices we were charging. It is hoped that we can include a bar on most event evenings also. The next main event is the Psychic night on Friday 27th November where there will be one psychic to a table of 6. That psychic will give each person a reading for 10 mins privately while all the others tuck into fish and chips or meal to your choice if you don’t eat fish and the bar will be open all evening.
I do hope to hear from you soon if you want tickets as we are limited to 60 places which go quite rapidly. Tickets can be purchased now from me or booked with me to pay for on the night, I just need the numbers to inform the chip shop how many to do. We are trying to arrange an event each month so December 5th is a Family disco at £5 a family from 7pm and also on 12th December there will be a Christmas Tombola at 7.30 pm in the hall. Keep your eyes open for the details of these or contact any of the trustees who will help you with information. SCOUT GROUP NEWS by Rod Glen This year’s Remembrance service was held on Sunday 8th November at ten o’clock at the Village Hall and was followed by the wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial. As last year, one of our young leaders (Richard Pembery) played the Last Post leading into the 2 minute silence.I am happy to say that our new Beavers were happy to be there too. A Million Hands is a long term community project organised by the Scout Association that aims to get 500,000 members involve in some form of action on particular issues. Our experience is that young people are not naïve. They can see that things aren’t always right in the world and want to be respected for their role in removing social barriers, connecting communities and improving lives.

community. We will be working with the mental health charity MIND local branch. With assistance from the county Scout Association we have restarted the Beaver colony. They on Wednesday evenings between 5:30 and 6:30. The new members are having a really great time. Why not ask them if you need convincing? We still have capacity to take more, and would appreciate some more adult helpers.
We have welcomed Katie Hiskey as a new Assistant Cub Leader. Between them, Akela (Emma Hiskey) and Katie have put together a varied programme. So far the Cubs have had a visit to Tesco in March as part of their Farm To Fork scheme, pumpkin carving with (very sharp) knives, helping with the Poppy Appeal collection and emergency first aid. I challenged them to put me in the recovery position. Most of them didn’t think they could and were quite excited that they found they could move a large adult so easily. •
