* term time only

BENWICK SCHOOL by Jackie North This half term has been really busy. We have welcomed 18 children into our reception class and on Friday 17th October 2014 we had 100 on roll! Our first big event of the school year was a Dahlicious dress-up day at the end of September. The children and staff all dressed up to celebrate the books of Roald Dahl and we had some amazing costumes. On the 9th September class 4 (our oldest children) visited March Police Station to complement their topic on Crime and Punishment. The children had a fantastic morning trying on a police officers’ uniform, having finger prints taken and even trying out the cell block! We raised £81 on 10th October for the Soldier’s Charity by dressing up in red, white and blue. Mrs Sue Robinson returned to the school to talk to each class about her grandfather, who fought in World War 1.

also brought in artefacts from the local museum which the children could handle. Everyone loved the event and learnt how hard it was for the men who fought in the trenches. And finally our annual Harvest Festival took place on 16th October. The children brought in a wonderful display of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as tinned and packet goods. Each class performed a short piece to the delight of the parents. Well done to everyone, but especially to the reception children who faced an audience for the first time! We now look forward to next term and of course … Christmas!•

The children were fascinated by the medals and the story. Mrs Robinson www.benwickbugle.co.uk

and Skylark garden centre. As a group we have decided to hold a competition each month when we will bring along an item beginning with a certain letter.

Another year is coming to the end and Benwick Ladies Club continues to enjoy a variety of outings and speakers.

Each member will vote for 3 of the items and points will be awarded for a prize to be given at the Christmas party.

Over the last ten months we have welcomed a number of new visitors and are always glad to see new faces at our meetings.

Our system for voting is by placing a coin of any denomination by our 3 choices. The money collected over the year will then be given to a charity of the clubs choice.

BENWICK LADIES CLUB

We meet in the church room at the village hall on the 3rd Monday of the month from 7pm to 9pm. Costs for visitors are £3.00 for most meetings, but £3.50 for catered events.

Our 2015 will be ready for the Jan/ Feb Bugle and there will be a copy on the Village Hall noticeboard. •

There are two more meetings before the end of the year. On Nov 17th our speaker is from John Lewis and then on Dec 15th we are holding our Christmas party. We will all be providing something for the buffet and a gift (cost approx £3) for the Secret Santa. Our programme for 2015 is nearly complete. We have planned outings to March museum and an apple orchard in Wisbech. The speakers include a master ocksmith, guide dogs for the blind, www.benwickbugle.co.uk

DURING THE WAR We continue our look back at life in Benwick during world war one through the memoirs of Florence Sismey. After I had received a reply from most of them we arranged a meeting in the Chapel and read out extracts from them so that parents and friends who came along heard about them. The chapel was packed and the congregation so pleased to hear the boys’ names rad out that someone stood up and insisted on having a collection to start off the next lot of parcels. By this time there had been quite a few casualties among the Benwick men. One man had been killed, leaving a wife and five children; two others had left three children each, and several badly wounded, so there was a lot of trouble in the village. The farm work had to go on, with the usual crops to be planted. Then came an order from the ‘War Ag’ that 10 or 12 acres of onions had to 10

be grown on the farm. That was a problem as no-one in this area had grown them before and the weeding would be very laborious and there just wasn’t enough labour to do the job – however help was applied for and came in the shape of a party of Land Army Girls. With the Zeppelins blocking imports, bread started to suffer as our wheat was not as good as the Canadian grain and now had to be mixed with whatever the bakers could get. The result was a heavy sour-tasting loaf, very different to the crusty ones we had been used to. There was much grumbling in the fields at dockey time. I remember my mother and others complaining about the flour after Chapel one Sunday, saying the Yorkshire puddings wouldn’t rise no matter how many eggs were put

www.benwickbugle.co.uk

in. And, of course, there was not enough sugar to make cakes. We used to boil potatoes, mash them with some flour and make scones which were delicious when eaten hot, with margarine and salt. One little luxury we got sometimes was called ‘Honey Sugar’. It came in blocks wrapped in paper and in cardboard cartons from Australia. It looked like solidified brown sugar and could be cut into slices to make sandwiches or to put on fruit or plain puddings. It didn’t come out way often, but the grocers shared it out amongst their regulars, to the great enjoyment of us all. I have never seen or heard of it since, except when two or three old folk get talking about those times. The war dragged on and more of the village lads were called up for training, and more were killed or badly wounded – it was heartbreaking to have so many memorial services at our little Church and Chapel, but that seemed the right way to honour those who fought for us.

able to write a letter and they were anxious for news of home, so most evenings found me writing a letter to someone, and especially to one curly-haired boy in the Navy. He was training at Plymouth but they went to sea and were caught in a blizzard off Land’s End. He got pneumonia and was sent to hospital in Devenport but died in a day or two. I seem to see his twinkling eyes every time I see his name on the memorial in Chapel or hear it read out at the Remembrance Services. •

BENWICK IN BLOOM

by Jill Hindle

The BIB team has been busy replanting tubs with winter flowers, tidying border areas and weeding, although still some areas to be completed. We have planted 1000 bluebells and irises in St Mary’s Cemetery and hope the spring and summer will give a good show. The pay back team has weeded and tidied the shrubbery and also planted out numerous wall flowers. We recently held a coffee and cake morning at The Five Alls for all our helpers and supporters, the event was very well attended with a very large number of villagers enjoying a well earned thank you from us. Special thanks to Lofty for all his help on the occasion. Without the tireless help of the villages who grew plants for us from seeds, helped water and care for some of our tubs we would not have achieved our Silver award.

you to see plus some delightful Christmas decorations made by Tracy and Valerie plus other goodies you may like to see, hope to see you there it really is a lovely afternoon out to get you in the spirit for Christmas. The prize draw for the winner of the Hamper will be held at The Five Alls on Saturday 20th December at noon. Once again many thanks to all the villagers who helped in whatever capacity to take us to a successful year and Silver Award also a huge thank you to Sainsbury March for the large number of flower plants and vegetable plants they gave to us the vegetable and tomato plants going to Benwick Primary School. Angela Wood was delighted to tell us of the very successful yield, in particular over 20lbs of tomatoes. A donation of £70 from Benwick Parish Council was also gratefully received and bought a large number of plants for the village tubs. •

We are raffling a Christmas Hamper in aid of our funds for next year and if you would like some tickets please ring Pat on 677048, or come along to Askham House Christmas Bazaar on Saturday 29th November from 2pm where we will have the hamper for 14

SCOUT GROUP NEWS by Rod Glen King’s Lynn Astronomical Society will be visiting us on 18th November. If there is no cloud, the Scouts and Cubs will be looking through several high power telescopes at galaxies, nebulae and planets. Scout Leader Edward Pembery has recently been on a training course learning about bushcraft and survival skills. He has come back with lots of ideas for activities for the Scouts to do. The Cubs have been working toward their scientist badge, and have had a visit from a herpetologist who brought in several snakes for them to see and touch. They will be working to earning the Chef’s badge before Christmas. The Beavers have been busy earning their photographer badge and communicator badge. They will be learning about disability awareness and how to make peppermint creams for Christmas. Unfortunately our Beaver Leader, Liz, has to give up her role to concentrate 18

on her work. I am asking for someone to volunteer to take her place. If no replacement can found, I am sorry to report that the Beaver colony will have to close after Christmas. So please, please will someone step up and allow the village 6-8 year olds to continue with their activities? At last there is provision for the 1418 year old youth in the area. A new Explorer Scout unit has been set up. This provides a programme based on adventurous and outdoor activities, and links in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. It is based in Chatteris, but does spend a lot of evenings going outdoors for its meetings. The leaders are Duane Hasnip and Paul Gibson. Duane used to be in the army and will be teaching the young people survival skills, including shelter building and cooking over open fires, in the near future. We have agreed that there should be joint meetings between the Scouts and Explorers so that our Scouts can experience some of the more adventurous things the Explorers do•

BUS SERVICE SURVEY Cambs County Council has prepared a short survey to help them understand how communities use the subsidised bus services. The Council has less funding available to subsidise buses, therefore this is an important process in deciding what your local transport looks like in the future. CCC currently subsidises the 56 March to Benwick/Manea service by £37k (2012/13 figures) with nearly

23,000 passenger journeys being made per year. You can complete the survey online at www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/ CambsFT3 or via the paper forms delivered in October. If you haven’t had one, you can also get a paper copy of the form by contacting the Parish Clerk, Jacquie Richardson, or by collecting a copy from the village hall. The deadline for responses is Sunday 23rd November. Changes to services could take up to 9 months to be implemented.•

NEWS FROM OUR MP by Steven Barclay One of the biggest issues concerning me at the moment are possible plans to cut bus services to villages like Benwick. Cambridgeshire County Council is currently reviewing three services run by Norfolk Green. These include the number 56, which runs three times a day from Benwick and is a life-line for residents who don’t have access to a car.

Residents have from Monday October 13 to November 23 to have their say as part of a community survey, which aims to show how people use the buses. Further information about this can be found on the county council’s website: www.cambridgeshire.gov. uk/cft. Our area is already under-provided for when it comes to public transport, particularly bus services and so it is vital that people speak up and have their say to ensure the county council understands just how important these bus services are to the local community.

I am urging users across the Fens to have their say on this review, which is being carried out as part of the Cambridgeshire Future Transport programme.

But I am also concerned that the county council is making decisions about services using out of date data and that there is no clarity on the exiting use and what the costs are for relevant alternatives.

The county council is reviewing all affected services as part of the programme and the services in this area under scrutiny also include the numbers 46 and 50.

Isolation and loneliness are real issues in rural communities and bus services provide people with vital links to help get them out and about, which can help with these problems.

The 46 links March to Wisbech and King’s Lynn, the number 50 links Wisbech to Sutton and the number 56 links Wisbech to March, Benwick and Manea. 22

Using taxis can be very expensive and realistically they are not a suitable alternative for people on a low income such as those on state pensions. www.benwickbugle.co.uk

Dial-a-ride services such as FACT are an alternative for people who do not have to be somewhere at a specific time, but because they tend not to have a fixed timetable they can be unsuitable for those needing to attend appointments. I hope the county council is not making judgements based simply on cost, but are looking at other social factors and the impact the loss of these bus services will have on the community, especially the elderly and young people who cannot drive. •

SWEETPEAS AND ME by Emily Shepperson A new section for the Bugle follows the life of Emily Shepperson and her two ‘sweetpeas’ Alyssa and Harvey, avoiding the washing up. The day started out badly when I woke up and immediately my back began to ache. My bed is usually so comfy that I could sleep for a million years in it. I eventually found out the cause for

this problem though. Harvey had obviously put the bike bell in my bed as a reminder that I had promised I would fit it to his bike at the weekend. The afternoon was spent at a soft play centre so that was lots of fun if a little chaotic at times. On the way there we saw an old Ford Escort and all I could hear was this conversation coming from the back of the car. Alyssa: “Wow, look at that. I want one of those! When Gordon dies, let’s buy one.” Harvey: “Gordon will never die. Gordon eats money but he won’t give up.” Gordon is our Golf (the car!) • Read more at www.avoidingthewashingup.co.uk

PCSO REPORT

by Sally Mitchell

Residents of Benwick were invited to influence what the local Safer Neighbourhood Team and Fenland District Council were to adopt as their community key concern. Members of the public were invited to complete a short questionnaire, the results of which have been used to identify the community concerns and influence the multi-agency response. 93 survey questionnaires were completed in total covering all parishes and the majority of the community that replied to the survey questionnaire felt the level of crime and antisocial behaviour was low. In Benwick 22 surveys were completed; out of these 14 identified issues of concern and 8 raised no issues. 20 perceived the crime rate as low, 1 medium and 1 high. The main issues identified were speeding and dog fouling. The main speeding issues were on Lilyholt Road during early evenings and school times with the suggestion that the road is being used as a cut 28

through. Further issues were raised on Doddington Road all the time and Ramsey Road/ High Street during school times and rush hour. Dog Fouling was highlighted in numerous areas of the village and it seems to be happening either early hours or late at night and the suggestion is that owners are allowing their dogs to foul when walking them at these times comfortable in the knowledge that they are not going to be seen. As a result the key concerns the police will be focusing on is speeding. Fenland District Council will be the lead on dog fouling. There were a few crimes reported during September; criminal damage on Whittlesey Road where the security locks on gates and an outbuilding were cut. Vehicle tyres were stolen on Cricketers Way from someone entering onto the property during daylight hours. Straw bales were set alight on Ramsey Road on farmland which started to spread to the barn on site. Special Constabulary officers carried out Speed enforcement and 2 drivers were reported for exceeding the speed limit. •
