“On the Way To Play…Kids Take Cues From Parents”

By John O’Sullivan, founder of Changing the Game Project and author of “Changing the Game: The Parents Guide to Raising Happy, High Performing Athletes, and Giving Youth Sports Rack to Our Kids.” Many a big game has been lost, and many a performance has been ruined before a single player even steps on the field. It's called the car ride to the game! As a coach I waged many a battle against the "statistics dad." He was the guy who told the vanload of kids on the way to the game how their upcoming opponent scored 62 goals and only gave up three, had not lost in two years, and how their smallest player was bigger than him and had already committed to Stanford at age 12. Stars Dad soon realized that the kids in the van were no longer smiling but scared to death, so he closed with "Oh, but you guys will be fine: you can win.” And then he handed them off to me with a quick "Go get 'em, coach, these girls are ready!" Ready to what, puke? Your kids take cues from you, plain and simple, and when you make it clear that this moment is so huge, so important, and so impossible a task, how do you think a 12-year-old is going to react? Do you work well if you are told that if you mess up you are fired? Could you complete a task at work if you knew that your coworkers and boss were going to yell at you constantly and micromanage your work? If you have to talk before or during the game, then fill kids' tanks with belief, with confidence, and talk them through ways they can be

successful. Better yet, just leave them alone and let them figure it out. They might just surprise you. Your kids hear what you say, but they are more likely to believe what they see. While being a fan and being a coach are quite different in many regards, one aspect where they are the same is in how players perceive your reactions to certain events during competition. Next time you are at a youth sporting event, take a look at what players do after a big mistake, a strikeout, or a missed scoring opportunity. They often put their head down, then look at their coach, and then look for their parents. They are looking to see how mom and dad reacted to their error. If mom and dad are sitting there, holding their heads in shame, faces buried in their hands, they are visually telling their child that what he has done is not good. They are reinforcing all the negative thoughts that are going through his own head in that moment. They are telling him that it is OK to dwell on his mistake because that is exactly what they are doing. Ultimately, and most damaging, they are telling him that his value is tied to athletic perforCommentary continued on page 4

mance. It is sad to hear many young athletes talk about "that look on my mom's face when I didn't do well." What if your daughter turned to you during the game and saw you clapping and mouthing "great effort" to her as she jogged by. What if she saw you smile, or wink, or give a thumbs-up, telling her it's OK, to get on with it, to play the next play and forget about the last one. What if she saw you laughing and giggling before the big game instead of looking like you were shipping her off to war? This simple little switch in your actions and reactions can play a huge role in your child's love of the game and an even bigger role in her ability to perform in competition. Coaches know there is no way to know if a player can make the game-winning shot, or perform in the close game, unless they give her that chance. As a parent, I am often amazed at what my kids can accomplish if I just give them the opportunity to figure it out. It is crucially important that we convey this to our kids through our actions and reactions.

Anna Beffer of Union High School Named Gatorade State Girls Soccer Player of the Year Anna Beffer of Union High School has been named Gatorade state girls soccer player of the year, it was announced Tuesday. The 5-foot-4 senior midfielder had nine goals and seven assists this season, leading the Redskins (15-1) to the Class 6A semifinals. Beffer is a three-time allconference and all-district selection and was voted MVP of the Heart of America Classic. She has signed to play soccer at Oklahoma State University. Beffer’s playmaking ability impressed rival coach David Cosby of Broken Arrow. “I think what makes her so dangerous is her ability to read the game and her vision to find the player who needs the ball,” he said.

“She commands the middle and distributes the ball extremely well.” The award recognizes not only athletic ability but also high standards of academic

achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Beffer maintains a 3.95 grade-point average. She is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has volunteered on behalf of her church youth group and with children’s soccer programs. She is the first Union athlete chosen for the Gatorade award in girls soccer. Mauro Cichero Norman North High School Standout Gatorade Oklahoma Boys Soccer Player Of The Year In its 29th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, today announced Mauro Cichero of Norman North High School as its 2013-14 Gatorade Oklahoma Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Cichero is the fourth Gatorade Oklahoma Boys Soccer Player of the Year to be chosen from Norman North High School. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Cichero as Oklahoma’s best high school boys soccer player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year award to be announced in May, Cichero joins an elite alumni association of past state award-winners in 12 sports, including Abby Wambach (1997-98, Our Lady of Mercy, N.Y.), Derek Jeter (1991-92, Kalamazoo HS, Mich.), Candace Parker (2001-02, Naperville Central HS, Ill.), Alexi Lalas (198788, Cranbrook HS, Mich.), Heather O’Reilly (2001-02, East Brunswick HS, N.J.) and Mark Sanchez (200405, Mission Viejo HS, Calif.). The 6-foot-3, 165-pound senior midfielder has led the Timberwolves to a 15-0 record and a berth in the Class 6A semifinals against Broken

Arrow, scheduled for May 13. The state’s returning Gatorade Boys Soccer Player of the Year, Cichero scored 16 goals and passed for 10 assists through 15 games. The Oklahoman Player of the Year as a junior, he is a three-time All-Conference and three-time AllDistrict selection. Cichero has maintained a 3.26 GPA in the classroom. A mentor for students learning English as a second language, he has volunteered on behalf of Students Performing Unselfish Deeds, which sponsors underprivileged local families. “Cichero possesses vision and an ability to read the game that makes him stand out from other players his age,” said Gordon Drummond, head coach at rival Norman High. “He’s a complete soccer player.”

Cichero has signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer on scholarship at Southern Methodist University this fall. The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade high school sports leadership team in partnership with USA TODAY High School Sports, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport. Cichero joins Gatorade Oklahoma Boys Soccer Players of the Year: Cristian Mata (2011-12, Union High School), Will Smith (2010 – 11, Norman North High School), Omar Mata (2009-10, Union), Jack Coleman (2008–09 Norman North High School), Thomas Shannon (2007-08, Broken Arrow Senior), and Jonathan Gann (2006-2007, Union) among the state’s list of former award winners.

Governor’s and President’s Cup Tournaments Completed

With the completion of the finals on May 10 at Broken Arrow’s complex, the recreational state championships and President’s Cup championships have been determined. The Kohl’s American Cup and Governor’s Cup drew larger numbers of teams for 2014 than in previous years due primarily to adding two locations for the event. Lawton and Tulsa United Soccer Club hosted the two venues. The Governor’s Cup semi-finals were held April 5-6 and the finals were held at Broken Arrow on May 10. Below are the finals for the Governor’s Cup. To view photos from the Governor’s Cup venues at Tulsa United and Lawton, use the following link: Governor’s Cup photos

ODP Camps Offer Summer Training While most of the Training Center Sessions for the year are completed, the summer camps are just getting underway for Olympic Development Program participants. Attendees to the camps will have been invited from the Training Center Sessions and will participate in one of the sub-regional camps offered in Oklahoma or Arkansas. For the girls invited from the Training Centers born in 2001 or 2002, their sub-regional camp will be on the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman from June 11-15. During the week they will have field training and classroom sessions during the day and play matches each evening with an All-Star match played at the end of the camp. The

game will be played at the OU soccer stadium. The top 2001 team will be invited to the Region III ODP camp in Montevallo, Alabama June 28-July 2. For the boys invited from their Training Centers born in 2002, their sub-regional camp will be at Clarksville, Arkansas. Dates of that camp: June 22-25. The boys will also have field and classroom sessions as well as evening matches during the camp. North Texas will host a sub-regional event for the 1999 through 1997 birth year players June 7-8. The camp is a small event but a good way to allow the ODP staff to make additions to the Region III camp squad as well as allow the boys to

play as a team before the camp. Region III ODP Trials will be in Tuscaloosa, Alabama for the boys teams of 1998 to 2000 birth years. They will meet July 10-14 with holdovers who make the Region III player pool continuing through to July 16. For boys born 1997 to 2001, July 15-19 will be their Region III ODP Trials at Tuscaloosa. There will be no holdovers from this group. Girls born in 2001 will have their Region III ODP Trials in Montevallo Alabama from June 28-July 2. Those girls born between 1997 to 2000 will meet July 5-9. Girls born between 1998 and 1999 will meet July 11-15.

Watts’ What By Dale Watts, Editor

Words have such power. I’ve learned that is especially true with young ones such as my grandchildren. Just recently they confronted their mother with a four letter word describing a bodily function that rhymes with quit. They had become aware of it through an online game and thought it was hilarious. As with many youngsters, they had an idea of the effect of throwing out such a word on the parental units but argued as to why it was not acceptable. As my daughter related the story I was thinking of all the times she and her siblings would do something similar. I also told her I hoped she was better at keeping a straight face when she informed her two offspring that such words can’t be used in public. My experience with such a situation often led me to ask my questioner for a short break and I would dash to the bathroom and get my laughter under control before returning with my game face on and

a stern look indicating that such behavior would not be tolerated. Words at soccer games seem to be thrown out for someone’s benefit (perhaps the referee or the players or even an opponent), but I’m not sure the effect is accomplished. Instead, the words get mixed in with all the other words coming from players on the field, nearby matches being played, and parent conversations near the touchline. I really wish I had a dime for every time I hear the word “handball” at a soccer match. It has become truly amusing to me to see how many times I hear the word while I pause to take a photo of a match. And it’s not limited to youth matches, either. Adult players seem to be able to determine a “handball” from forty yards away and then voice that word with great gusto to provide the referee with the information. For the young players, I enjoy how they interpret their coach’s words to them during the match. While viewing the player through my camera, I can often catch an expression of the player as his/her coach throws out a string of words that cause puzzlement on the player’s face and sometimes outright eye rolls. Eye rolls by a young one

carry huge implications. The literal interpretation of words can be really amusing when the young ones are around age 6 or so. Years ago a referee in Tulsa told his young opponents who were standing in front of him at the coin toss, to shake hands. He then nearly lost it when all four boys began literally shaking their hands beside their bodies and looking at him with those wonderful eye rolls. At my grandson’s T-ball game a few weeks ago, a coach learned how literal young ones take your words. He stood in front of the 5 year old as she faced the baseball on the stand. Coach leaned toward her and said, “Choke up on the bat, Sally.” To which she promptly ducked her head and attempted to cough up something from her mouth onto the bat. Coach, to his benefit, managed to keep a straight face and rephrased his instruction. As we finish this spring’s tournaments and season, perhaps we could all make better word choices around our young ones and each other. And, yes, that includes me. I recall many time in the past when my word choices affected people and as we all know, you can’t take them back.

BADGES For the 09, 08, and 07 referees, the badges for 2015 will be of the same color. NEW REFEREE CLASSES & RECERTIFICATION Every club should attempt to hold an entry level course for new

referees by communicating with your club’s coaches and parents to find candidates to attend. Once you have at least 6 willing to attend, use the OSA web site to complete a Course Contract with OSA. There is no charge to host the course, but a minimum of 6 is required to conduct the courses. Candidates register to attend the course online and no money is collected at the course. Recertification courses are requested in the same manner as a new course. The contract must be

completed with date and time and location. Again, no charge to host as the referees all pay online prior to attending. BACKGROUND CHECKS Every referee 18 and older must complete a background check before he/she can be registered. Clubs should remind any referee candidate of this prior to their attendance at a new clinic or recertification clinic.

Coaching Courses Continue Through Summer “Just because the spring season is over,” says Director of Player Development and Coaching Education Kurt Luitwieler, “doesn’t mean coaching courses have ended.” Beginning June 6 -8, Oklahoma Soccer and USSF will host a National D license in Oklahoma City. The June dates are for the instructional portion of the USSF National D and the performance weekend will be held August 8-10. Coaches must attend both weekends. This will be the ONLY dates for the USSF National D license in 2014. For upcoming USSF E courses and Youth Modules, coaches should be aware that Energy FC provides free coaching courses for clubs who wish to host Youth Modules and E courses at their club. A link for that application is available on the OSA website under COACHES and then to General Information. The appli-

cation is also available by clicking on this link: APPLICATION The USSF/US Youth National Youth License will be offered in Tulsa July 25-27 and completing on August 1-3 (the course runs two weekends). The cost is $495 and the application for that course is also on the Coaches page of the OSA website or you may use the following link: YOUTH Oklahoma is not hosting the USSF National C course this summer. We will host the course in the summer of 2015. For USSF C course dates and locations throughout the country, use the following link: USSF C: This is the highest level US Soccer/FIFA coaching license that is hosted at the state level. It is an 8 day course. The curriculum is focused on how to connect the lines within the team. It is assumed the

coach has been through the USSF E and D where the concepts of modern teaching and learning methods are explored. These will be expanded upon and put into the context of more complex scenarios and high expectations. **Coaches looking to coach in the Top Tier (when there are two tiers) of SoccerCity Oklahoma Premier League must have a USSF National C License for 2014-2015 season.** USSF/USYS NATIONAL YOUTH LICENSE -click here for information

Why can’t we all be like Grandma? ers?

What is it about Grandmoth-

They have the innate ability to see the best in their grandchildren and lavish all kinds of praise on them. Even when those children are not perfect. A lot of times, we, as parents, see it as "spoiling" them or not dealing in reality and then we have to then clean up the mess after Grandma leaves. Why is it that the kids always want to be around their grandmother? I mean, she can't really run around with them and play tag. She isn't able to throw the ball with him, or doesn't have the artistic ability to help her draw better or the training

to help the other one with her science project. Why do they respond so positively to her and seem to always be more confident and competent after being around her? Simple. The Grandmother Method of learning. Before you scoff, watch the video at this link: https://www.ted.com/talks/sugata_mitra_the_child_driven_education The video above is about 20 minutes and very good. Here is what we in the Youth Soccer World must take away from his research and subsequent findings: The Grandmother Method. He used volunteers (many

times actual grandmothers) to "work" with these children. He gave the groups of children a computer and a very difficult task that they were not trained ahead of time to do. The "Grandmother" was not trained on how to do the task either. They were just told to "admire them and get them to Show and Tell you and each other things they find interesting and cool." The findings were startling. One scientific reviewer of the work said, "it was too good to be true." In fact, it rocks the foundation of how we traditionally think children have to learn. We tend to put kids into Like Grandma on page 21

Like Grandma, continued from page 19 a "system", like a factory and churn them out in age group batches and in order for them to progress from one industrialized stage to the next there must be a professionally trained expert in the room to monitor and correct and instruct every step of the way. The kids, with no trained expert, learned much and could explain and teach others what they learned. They were in small groups and had a computer as a resource. But the kids were the drivers of the environment. The Grandmother Model is best suited for the u12 and under Grassroots or Recreational Model. What is it? Think about the typical grandmother. What I laid out in my intro about my kids and their grandmother is true in general and with this model. They are generally not experts in Pokemon or Soccer or Charcoal Art techniques, but kids love to work and play with and around Grandma. Why is this? The Grandmother Method: They are given one simple task. To grandmothers this is easy and natural. Admire them enthusiastically and genuinely. When my 7 year old son was sharing his Pokemon game with Grandma, she took some of her cues from him. She had no idea about the game, how it worked or what Pokemon were the best ones or the rules, etc. However, when he got excited about something, so did she. He would say, "Did you see that? That was awesome." She would respond, "It sure was. Which one was that? Oh, Dialga. OK. Why did you choose that move? It worked really well, that was pretty amazing." When my older daughter was sharing her art and working on new ones, she would say, "Your work is remarkable. I love the detail in the eyes. How did you do that shading?" So she would show

her. When the middle daughter would want to throw or kick the ball outside, she would have her do it against the wall or with a sibling. "That was a great kick. How did you get it in the air all the way there? Can you do it again?" So, the 10 year old girl would go and try it again and show her. (Incidentally, the 7 year old boy would try to then do what she did because he knew that would earn him similar praise.) In this way, she coaxed great attention and effort and enjoyment from these three extremely different children in different arenas of challenge. They all came away with a sense of confidence and pleasure. As volunteer coaches who perhaps have little to no experience with the game, we can accomplish the same outcomes with our 5-10 year olds. All we have to do is set up little games in our practices where they are playing. Not drills. Just little games. 1v1, 2v2, etc. Then watch. You don't need a ton of professional training. Grandma doesn't. Just watch. If they do something you think is amazing, praise it and ask them about it. Get them to show you again. Or tell you what they did and why. If THEY get excited about something, take their cues and celebrate it with them and get them

to try it again or tell you why that was so fabulous. Be curious. Be interested. Get them to talk about what they find interesting and fun about the game and each other. Then send them home to their parents after you've "spoiled" them for an hour. Just like Grandma. Then, just like my kids, they will want to go to Grandma's all the time. (Too bad they live in Florida...)
