Bentley University Women’s Basketball Finished Business! Bentley Takes Over Late to Complete Perfect Season ERIE, Pa. – Undefeated NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball National Champions! The Bentley University Falcons capped a perfect season by storming back in the final three minutes, closing with a press-fueled 19-5 run to overtake fifth-ranked West Texas A&M University, 73-65, Friday, Mar. 28 before 2,151 at the Erie Insurance Arena. The national championship is the first-ever for the 917-game winner Barbara Stevens and the Falcon women’s basketball program. “Am I dreaming? Is this real? I can’t tell you what a tremendous ride this has been for our coaching staff and our Bentley community with these young ladies,” said an exuberant Stevens. “Proud of them doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel. I get emotional when I think of them because we’ve gone through so much together. They are truly champions. They have been champions in our book from day one.” The seven Bentley seniors and grad students capped their final season 35-0 with three of the seven earning AllTournament honors. Senior power forward Jacqui Brugliera was chosen as the tournament’s MVP and she was joined on the All-Tournament team by All-Americas Lauren Battista and Courtney Finn. All three were on the court during the comeback along with classmates Caleigh Crowell and Christiana Bakolas. The amazing comeback actually began two-and-a-half minutes earlier with the Falcons facing a nine-point deficit, matching the team’s biggest of the year, with 5:37 to play. A drive to the basket by Brugliera launched the rally and another inside basket by the six-footer made it a 58-53 contest with 4:37 left in the season. Bakolas hit the first of two from the line but West Texas A&M forward Chontiquah White did her one better, sinking a pair for a 60-54 lead with 3:07 to play. Stevens put the press on and things changed rapidly with the Falcons exploding for six unanswered points in 13 seconds to draw even at 60 with 2:47 still to play. Finn made a layup, Bakolas stole the inbound pass and fed Battista for another layup, and then Bakolas did it again, this time getting

Brugliera took a charge at the other end, one of four for her in the game, and Finn sank two free throws for a six-point lead with 0:41 showing. fouled while taking the shot herself. She sank both free throws and all of a sudden, the two teams were dead even with 2:47 to play. The Falcons used the press despite having several in foul trouble. “We had no choice. They handled it. They handled it very well,” said Stevens. “W ith Lauren and Christiana up front, and Courtney sealing those traps off, and Christiana anticipating the reversal, thankfully Caleigh and Jacqui could stay behind and stay safe. The front line of our press was great.” Finn added “when our backs are against the wall, it doesn’t matter if you have four fouls or one foul. You have to be aggressive and not worry about that, like Jacqui stepping up and taking some big charges at the end of the game for us.” The Lady Buffs briefly regained the lead with a free throw, but 18 seconds later, after a Brugliera offensive board, Battista drilled a straight-away three-pointer to put Bentley in front for good, 63-61 with 2:11 remaining. Nine seconds later, the WBCA Player of the Year came up with a steal and took it in for a layup and a 65-60 lead. “The clock was ticking down. Under five (seconds). Under four. We’re down by a decent amount,” said Battista. “At that point with my career on the line, seven of us really with our careers on the line, the national championship at stake. We needed to make big plays.”

2013-14 NCAA Division II National Champions 27.1 seconds made it 71-63 and the national championship was essentially locked up. The night didn’t start out on a positive note as the Falcons scored only three points in the first seven-and-a-half minutes, falling behind by eight. However, the defense picked up after yielding 11 points in the first five minutes, limiting West Texas to just 13 the remainder of the opening stanza. The two went into the break even at 24 and it remained a one-possession game until a 12-4 Lady Buff run put the Texans up nine, 55-46, with seven minutes left. Finn led the Falcons with 21 points, including a perfect 12-for-12 at the foul stripe, and also provided four rebounds and four assists. Bentley University Women’s Basketball Semis: 77-62 Final Four Win over Cal Poly Pomona Puts Bentley One Win Away from Perfection ERIE, Pa. – The 34-0 and number one-ranked Bentley University women’s basketball team moved to within one victory of its first-ever national championship after registering a 77-62 Final Four win over 18th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona Wednesday, Mar. 26, in the NCAA Division II Championships at the Erie Insurance Center. The victory put Coach Barbara Stevens’ team into the title game Friday night against fifth-ranked West Texas A&M, which disposed of Nova Southeastern University by a similar margin, 80-66, in the first semifinal. “I find myself somewhat overwhelmed by the emotion that we feel, the pride we feel in our team right now,” said Stevens, the fifth winningest women’s basketball coach of all-time (916 wins). The senior frontcourt trio of three-time All-America Lauren Battista, All-Northeast-10 Jacqui Brugliera and six-footone Caleigh Crowell combined to outscore the entire Bronco team by one, finishing with 63 points and 27 rebounds while hitting 24 of 41 shots, including eight three-pointers. Battista, Bentley’s all-time leading scorer, showed why she was selected as the WBCA Division II Player of the Year honors as she recorded 25 points, ten rebounds and five assists. Crowell’s 21 points included 15 without missing a shot in the second half (6-6 overall with three triples), and Brugliera finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks, a steal and some stellar defense on CPP’s All-America post Jada Blackwell. Stevens said of the six-foot Brugliera, “I think she focused a lot of her attention last night on tying to guard Amber Dvorak. Tonight we told her we felt like she could be an offensive weapon. She didn’t have to worry about a 6-7 kid looming behind her when she got the ball in the post.” It wasn’t quite a wire-to-wire victory, but the Falcons never trailed after a Battista jumper 3:11 into the contest made it a 7-6 game, maintaining a single-digit margin for most of the way. That basket ignited a 14-4 Bentley spurt, creating a 1910 advantage after eight minutes. Following the Battista hoop, Brugliera got it done at both ends, taking a charge (the first of three for Bentley in the first half) and finishing a fast-break with a layup. The run also included Battista scoring after senior point guard Christiana Bakolas found her open inside, a Battista putback and three-pointers from opposite sides of the court from Crowell and Brugliera. After CPP bounced back with seven straight during a stretch in which the Falcons turned cold, Bentley closed out the opening half with a 10-3 run over the final eight minutes. Battista had seven of the ten, both Brugliera and Crowell drew offensive fouls and the Bentley defense limited the Broncos to one basket in 12 attempts. That sent the Falcons to the halftime locker room on the positive side of a 29-20 score following a 20-minute stretch in which they came up with four steals and a block, had a plus-nine rebounding margin and allowed only four offensive boards on 20 missed shots. Cal Poly Pomona started strong in the second half, a 103 burst over the first 2:01 drawing the Californians within two. Blackwell had half the points but also picked up her third after her team drew within a deuce at 32-30. A 10-0 Bentley explosion in a span of less than two minutes opened the game up, extending a three-point advantage to 54-41 with 8:22 to play. Bakolas hit an open Crowell underneath for two and fed Battista on a fast-break layup, freshman forward Jen Gemma hit a pair from the line, Brugliera added a second-chance basket and Crowell scored on a layup after coming up with a steal in the backcourt. The Broncos cut it to eight several times before Crowell’s fourth three-ball of the night made it a 64-53 game with 1:59 left. Senior All-America Courtney Finn, coming off a career-best 30 in Bentley’s quarterfinal win over Drury University, tallied her first points with a pair of free throws with 1:32 on the clock, making it a 13-point spread. A parade to the line followed with the Falcons making 10 of 14 free throws over the final 81 seconds to lock up its first trip to the national championship game in 24 years. Finn finished with six points, all at the line, and moved into tenth on Bentley’s all-time scoring list with 1,576 points.

Lauren Battista and her teammates: 1 win away! Bakolas delivered six assists and helped the Falcons win the rebounding game, 41-36, with five. Blackwell finished with 22 points and six rebounds before fouling out in the final minute, but was just four of nine inside the arc for the 26-7 Broncos. Bentley, which set a school record for wins in a season, shot 52 percent in the second half and finished at .446 overall with nine triples in 28 attempts. CPP was limited to only .349 and was only 15 of 45 on its two-point attempts. Battista, when asked about the upcoming title contest, said “Obviously, Friday is my last game in a Bentley uniform. When I step on the floor I just want to give everything I have. It’s the attitude I’ll take.” Crowell added “It’s hard to believe that we’re even here. At the beginning of the year that was our goal – the national championship. We took one game at a time and each game was a championship game to us.” Official Basketball Box Score -- Game Totals -- Final Statistics Bentley vs Cal Poly Pomona 03/26/14 8:30 pm at Erie, Pa. Bentley University Women’s Basketball East Regional Final: Wire-to-Wire Win Sends Bentley to Elite Eight for 3rd Time in 4 Years WALTHAM, Mass. – For the third time in four years, the Bentley University women’s basketball team is headed to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight! The Falcons punched their ticket Monday night, Mar. 17, with a wire-to-wire 83-62 victory over LIU Post in the East Regional championship game at the Dana Center, a victory that boosted coach Barbara Stevens’ team to 32-0, tying the school record for longest winning streak. “I expected nothing less from this group,” said Stevens following her 914th career victory. “From the second last year’s game ended (a 5351 loss to Dowling), this group of seniors was determined to get back here and further. I saw it every day, every practice, they brought their level of play up every game. I had the utmost confidence in them. These Regional champions for games make you nervous, but when I thought about this group of seniors, it calmed me down.” Powering the Falcons to the victory were three of those veterans, a trio who share more than 5,000 career points and 121 victories between them, each a member of the All-Tournament Team: Regional Most Outstanding Player Courtney Finn, two-time All-America forward Lauren Battista and four-time All-Conference forward Jacqui Brugliera. Brugliera turned in her premier effort of the season, finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Battista added 16 to her school record point total, which now stands at 2,053, and Finn finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists. They were three of the seven Falcons who were playing at home for the final time with that septet largely responsible for 70 homecourt wins over the last four years. After being denied in last year’s regional final, Bentley established control from the start, vaulting out to a 10-2 lead less than three minutes into the game. Brugliera opened the contest with a couple layups and Battista followed with a foul-line jumper. Following a Pioneer basket, both Battista and freshman forward Jen Gemma stretched the lead to eight. “We weren’t going to be caught by surprise,” said Battista, the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year for Division II. “We played with great aggressiveness from the start. We wanted to send a message early. We know teams are coming out for us, so we have to be ready early.” A few minutes later, Bentley ran off seven straight to make it a 24-10 game and force an LIU Post timeout at 12:04. Following that run, which included a drive to the basket by junior guard Kelsey Mattice and five straight by Battista, the Falcons were shooting 69 percent and the Pioneers were at 21, with five turnovers. The visitors battled back and by the time Post sophomore guard Jalyn Brown drained a three with 4:05, the Falcon advantage was down to five. Brugliera answered with a top-of-the-key three, igniting a 12-2 burst that sent Bentley into the half riding a 46-31 lead. That run also included a driving layup by Finn to beat the shot clock, a triple by Mattice, a layup from senior forward Tyler Parker Kimball and a drive from Gemma, who averaged 14 in the regional. It took a while for the Falcons to get untracked once play resumed (0-for-5, three turns) and the first six points went up on the Pioneer side of the scoreboard. The dry spell ended when grad student and guard Chrystal Guarin drove for a layup. That was followed by her taking a charge at the defensive end, and it grew into a 19-9 run that extended the lead to 19, 65-46 with 11 minutes to play. All six of Guarin’s points came during that span, and both Finn and Battista connected from three-point land during the run. The final 21-point differential matched Bentley’s biggest lead of the night, a margin first achieved when senior point Christiana Bakolas hit a jumper in the paint with 4:13 to play.

6

Brugliera achieved her 20 by making 7 of 12 overall, one threepointer and all five of her free throws. Five of her boards came at the offensive end. “I watched the You Tube video of last year ’s game last night for motivation,” said Brugliera. “We all had the mindset we weren’t going to lose. We were confident, played aggressive, as opposed to perhaps playing tentative last season.” Bentley ’s fourth doubledigit scorer was Gemma, with 14 points (5-7 shooting) and six rebounds off the bench. Bakolas survived foul trouble to provide eight points and four assists. Bentley shot 51 percent while limiting the Pioneers to 34 the 13th time! percent, and also won the rebounding battle for the 32nd straight game, finishing with a 41-35 advantage. Junior guard Chelsea Williams, who joined the Bentley three and teammate Alexis Peters on the All-Tournament team, led LIU Post with 23 points. The regional championship is Bentley’s 13th since 1989. “We know what to expect so we won’t feel the moment is too big,” said Battista, who helped the Falcons to the national quarterfinals as a freshman and the semis as a sophomore. “We need to go in with confidence knowing we are the team to beat. So that’s how we are going to play.” “We’re just so thrilled to represent Bentley and our region,” said Stevens. “Every step of the tourney it gets tougher and tougher.” Official Basketball Box Score -- Game Totals -- Final Statistics LIU Post vs Bentley 03/17/14 7:00 pm at Waltham, Mass. 2013-14 NCAA Division II National Champions East Regional: Bentley Opens NCAA Tourney with Wins over Bloomfield & Stonehill WALTHAM, Mass. – For the fourth straight year, and the 20th time in the last 27 years, the Bentley University women’s basketball team is back in the NCAA Division II East Regional championship game. The nation’s number-one ranked Division II team punched its ticket and kept its perfect record intact as the Falcons pulled away down the stretch for a 79-63 victory over Stonehill College in the semifinals Saturday night, Mar. 15 at the Dana Center. It was the 31st win this season for coach Barbara Stevens’ team, matching the best start in program history (1992). All-Region grad student Courtney Finn and freshman forward Jen Gemma each had 16 points to lead four double-digit scorers for the Falcons, and senior All-America Lauren Battista followed with 15, including a pair of killer threes during the final five minutes. The Falcons, who took the lead for good with a 16-2 firsthalf surge, used second-half spurts of 6-0, 7-0 and 8-0 to first hold off the Skyhawks and then put the game away. After Stonehill used a 13-6 run to get back within four at 54-50 midway through the second, the Falcons answered with seven unanswered. Bakolas sank one of two at the line, Gemma made a pair of driving layups, fifth-year senior forward Caleigh Crowell scored on an inbound pass from Bakolas and the differential was back to 11, 61-50 with just over seven to play. Any hopes the 19-10 Skyhawks had of a comeback were dashed with a run of eight unanswered, beginning with a drive to the basket by Gemma with 3:30 to play. Senior All-Conference forward Jacqui Brugliera followed with a three-point play and Battista delivered the dagger, hitting a top-of-the-three with 1:50 left to make it 76-59. “In the second half, we made some great plays,” praised Stevens after her 913th career victory. Bentley finished with a slight advantage in field goal percentage (47-45 percent) and rebounds (37-32) and committed two fewer turns, 15-17. As they were in Friday’s first-round win over Bloomfield, free throws were another story as the Falcons

made 20 of 24 at the stripe and the Skyhawks attempted only seven, making just three. A night earlier, Crowell had an outstanding all-around game, with her line including 4of-5 from three-point land, and Finn knocked down 14 of 16 free throws en route to a game-high 23 points as undefeated Bentley made it 30-0, 80-65 over eighthseeded Bloomfield College in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball East Regional. Bloomfield gave the Falcons all they could handle for most of the game and actually had a one-point lead, 58-57 after sophomore guard Ariel Wilson knocked down a three from the top-of-the-key with 10:38 left. Caleigh Crowell Bentley quickly regained the lead when Brugliera hit a pair of free throws 15 seconds later. That began an 8-0 burst that included two Brugliera layups, one of which just beat the shot clock, and a second-chance basket from Battista. Wilson netted the game’s next three points, bringing the Deacons (20-10) to within four with 5:50 left. The rest of the game belonged to the Falcons, who closed with a 15-4 spurt over the final 5:33, a stretch in which they held Bloomfield to one field goal in five attempts and forced three turnovers. Crowell couldn’t have shot much better as she made six of seven overall, including the four from outside the arc. She also contributed with five rebounds, three rejections and two steals. Finn, who surpassed 1500 career points, complemented her 23 points with six rebounds and three assists.

Bentley University Women’s Basketball Battista Surpasses 2,000 & Earns 4th MVP Award as Bentley Rolls to NE-10 Championship 4-Peat WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior All-America forward Lauren Battista tied her career-best with 29 points, eclipsing the 2,000-mark for her career in the process, and collected an unprecedented fourth consecutive Northeast-10 Conference Championship MVP award as Bentley University put on a sparkling offensive performance en route to its fourth straight NE-10 title, 99-76 over Adelphi University Sunday, Mar. 9 at the Dana Center. Bentley, the season-long number one in the USA TODAY Sports/WBCA Division II coaches’ poll, ran its record to 29-0 and clinched the automatic berth into next weekend’s NCAA Division II East Regional. It was the second time in conference history a team has won four straight conference championships, with this year’s group of Falcons duplicating their predecessors from 19982001. All-time, Bentley has 18 NE-10 titles to its credit, including 10 in the last 17 years. “I’m very proud of the way our team performed today,” said 14-time NE-10 Coach of the Year Barbara Stevens after her 911th career win. “I was happy to see us play a spirited game. In the first half, we had a lot of offensive weapons and were also doing a good job defensively.” Battista was nothing short of sensational in her school record 127th career start as she hit 11 of 17 shots overall, including three of five from downtown, and all four of her free throws. In addition, she provided six assists, four rebounds and one steal, and turned the ball over just once in 31 minutes of action. Bentley’s all-time leading scorer joined the 2,000-point club with an inside move at 6:19 of the first half, a basket that made it 50-23 at the time. She had 21 points by the break, helping the Falcons to 64 points (a school record for a half) and a 27-point lead, and finished the game with 2,011 for her career. “Lauren gave us a player of the year performance today and showed her tremendous versatility,” said Stevens. “She’s a distributor, a scorer and she was also asked to cover Sade Jackson. I’m so glad she’s on our side.” Not to be overshadowed was the performance of senior forward Caleigh Crowell, who drilled five three-pointers en route to a 22-point afternoon, 15 of which came before intermission. After the Panthers, the top seed out of the NE-10’s Southwest Division, jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead, Bentley embarked on a 28-5 blitzing of the visitors over a span of six-and-a-half minutes. That produced a 30-11 lead with more than 12 minutes still left on the first-half clock and Adelphi (22-7) never got closer than 17 again. “Our team was very ready to play, but I think their first three possessions got our attention,” said Stevens. That 28-5 run began with a dozen unanswered points, a run that featured eight points by Crowell. She got it going with a three from the right wing, and later added a layup and another trifecta during the spurt. By the time freshman forward Jen Gemma scored with 12:29 to make it a 30-11 game, Bentley was shooting a ridiculous 81 percent, having put 13 of 16 shots through the basket. Battista’s 2,000th came in the midst of an 18-6 run that made it a 59-27 game with 2:44 left until the break. The final points during that span came on a three-ball from grad student Courtney Finn, Bentley’s 23rd field goal in 31 attempts. It was more of the same throughout the first eight minutes of the second half. Adelphi netted the first basket when play resumed, but Bentley followed with a 21-6 explosion that made it a 40-point game, 85-45. Battista and Crowell were followed in the scoring column by Finn and Gemma, with 16 and 14, respectively. Finn added eight rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Gemma helped out with six boards. Bentley earned the right to play in its 25th championship game by beating Assumption College, 75-59, in the semis three days earlier and Le Moyne College, 77-51, the previous Sunday. Against Assumption, Battista made seven of 11 shots for game-high 21 points and Crowell followed with 14. While they gave up 59 points, it was an impressive defensive effort for the Falcons, who had 12 steals, five blocks and three drawn charges. About half of Assumption’s points came in the final minutes of each half after Bentley had established a significant lead. The Greyhounds scored 13 in the final 3:30 of the first half, matching their total in the first 16:30, to draw within seven at the break, 33-26. And the Hounds scored 18 in the last 5:40 of the game after the Falcon advantage peaked at 27, 68-41.

8

After Assumption netted the game’s first basket, Bentley responded with a 20-2 run. Crowell had six of the first 12, with a three from the right wing and a conventional three-point play. By the time Bentley senior forward Tyler Parker Kimball scored on an inside basket with 9:51 left in the opening half, the Falcons had limited the visitors to 2-for-11 shooting and forced eight turnovers. Battista, who moved to within 18 points from 2,000 for her sparkling career, hit a pair of jumpers during an 8-2 run later in the half that made it a 28-13 contest with 3:45 left until halftime. On top by seven at the half after a last second put-back by Assumption, Bentley came storming out of the gate when play resumed. Ten unanswered points to start the second made it 4326, and the run grew into a 19-5 burst, giving the Falcons a 21-point edge, 52-31, with nearly 12 minutes left to play. Brugliera had six of the 19, including two of Bentley’s first three second-half baskets, and Crowell added five with a three-pointer from the top of the key and a second-chance basket. In the quarterfinals, a 10-0 run to start the game and 27 consecutive points to open the second half was more than enough as Bentley rolled to the convincing win over Le Moyne. Battista again led the Falcons, filling the stat sheet with 13 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, two steals and a block. All five starters scored in the first 4:13 for Bentley, producing a quick 10-0 start for the home team. Included during that run were a three-pointer from the right corner by Battista and a put-back from Brugliera. After a pair of baskets got Le Moyne on the board, Battista and Finn each scored four as Bentley used eight unanswered to make it an 18-4 game after eight-and-half minutes. The first half differential peaked at 27-10 when Battista hit a jumper in the paint with 6:31 to play, but the Dolphins finished strong to get within 11 at the break, 32-21. The lead actually shrunk to eight before Gemma completed the first-half scoring with a top-of-the-key three with 54 seconds left. Before Le Moyne would score again, the Falcon advantage had ballooned to 38, 59-21, just before the midpoint of the second half. During that lengthy dry spell, the Dolphins missed 12 straight from the field, misfired on four free throws and turned it over four times.
